I was reading on the moto forums about access to a hidden menu to enable some options that moto has turned off...specifically the ability to force edge.
The moto forums filtered the info on how to access it...if it's against the rules to ask about it here too, then please diregard...if not and someone can share, it would be much appreciated.

Try this:
1) Go to dialer then type out *#*#4636#*#*
2) The "Testing" screen will appear. Select "Phone information"
3) Scroll to the bottom to where it reads "Set preferred network type".
4) Using the drop-down menu, change the selection from "GSM auto (PRL)" to "GSM only"
I'm not sure if the setting sticks after reboots so you may want to check that out as well.

does anyone know to get manual network selection to work properly? no matter what ROM i've used, it just doesn't work right. When set to manual, and a network is selected, it will still start roaming on to another provider when the signal gets too low.
So is there anyway to force it stay on whatever provider i choose?
Hi,
I have a German device so I do not know if I translate the descriptions in the menu of the Wizard in exactly the right way.
However, in the properties of the "phone" part there is a tab named "network" or "provider". There you can see which provider you are connected to right now. Below is the menu "Provider selection" or "network selection", where you can switch from "automatic" to "manual". Below this is a switch which will make the phone look for all available networks, and then show them to you with a checkbox in front of every entry.
If you uncheck all except the one you want to use and tap the OK button in the upper right corner, the phone needs a few moments to update configuration and than it it should work. As I said, this is how it works on the German device, but I assume it will be the same on any other.

Ahh, i see how its supposed to work. However i have a Cingular/ATT SIM card, and they lock certain abilities on the SIM, so it won't let me save any changes I make to that list, unfortunately. I guess i'm crap outta luck.
By using AnyCut, I found out a hidden setting in my G1.
I'm using Cyanogen's Android mod 3.6.8.1, but I assume the setting is also in the factory Android and others.
Press an empty area of Home Screen as if to add a shortcut, then select "Shortcuts" , select AnyCut, select Activity, then find the group of entries named "Settings". For me it was the second "Setting" selection from the top.
When I clicked this new "Settings" shortcut, a menu appeared:
Title: "Set GSM/UMTS band"
Entries: Automatic/EURO Band/USA Band/Japan Band/AUS Band/AUS2 Band/
I tried "Automatic" (seemed to make sense then), and my 3G and E (UMTS and EDGE) stopped working - I could not get my phone to connect to the mobile network! So I switched to EURO band, and Edge started working - but to get 3G working again, I had to enable it (3G), and then reopen the "Settings" menu and select "EURO band" again.
I have a data plan, and also use Wi-Fi at home.
But I just found out, all my messenger(Windows live) conversations are sent as Text message. Why???
I do not have text message plan, so it would cost me a lot...
Is there a setting to change this to use internet instead???(I thought it does, but obviously it does NOT!)
Thanks.
Try changing sms setting:
1. Run CommManager
2. Hit "Change phone settings" so you see "Phone settings" screen
3. Hit "Menu" button and choose "Advanced network"
4. Go to "SMS Service" tab
5. Choose "GPRS" in checkbox labelled "SMS over".
6. Viola!

Hi All,
I have made significant progress with my Aussy RAZR M (XT905). Onto it I have installed TWRP (v2.8.6.0) and [ROM][OFFICIAL][KitKat 4.4.4][moto_msm8960 & moto_msm8960_jbbl] PAC-man 4.4.4.RC-1.
Whilst it looks like the phone understands that a SIM card is installed I am unable to get a signal from my network provider (Telstra); further more I cannot see an option in settings to search for or manually choose a provider in order to connect.
Here is the information that I see on the 'About phone' screen -
Model Number: RAZR M
PAC Version: KK RC-3 dev
Android/Ver: 4.4.4
Baseband/Ver: SM_BP_101031.042.32.86P
Kernel/Ver: 3.4.104-g5d09cd0
I am wondering if I need a different baseband version, or to manually install a different radio file.
If anybody can offer any suggestions on how to get this going it will be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Davo

Do you have the "Mobile Networks" (after "Bluetooth" and before "more...") in your settings? Actually, on my other phone, the "Mobile Network" is under "more..." Have you tried using the search functionality within the settings app? try "Mobile Network"
Hi DiamondJohn,
Thanks for taking an interest in my post; and with the other posts that have lead to this one!
I have discovered how to tinker with the 'Mobile Network Settings'; instead of being available under the 'More' item it is simply a matter of clicking on the 'Mobile Networks' heading itself (something that I didn't think to do because this heading also has a toggle switch to the right).
At the bottom of the 'Mobile network settings' page there is a menu item called 'Network Operators', which when selected presents -
Search Networks > ERROR WHILE SEARCHING FOR NETWORKS
Choose automatically > YOUR SIM CARD DOESN'T ALLOW A CONNECTION TO THIS NETWORK
Above, after the arrow, I have written what is shown when I click on each of the respective options.
Any other ideas?
Thanks
Davo
I have performed further investigations and discovered the instructions, below, for looking closer at signal settings -
From phone dialler type *#*#4636#*#*
Select Phone Information
Then attempted to change the radio band, by selecting 'Select radio band' from the 'three dot' menu (at the top right).
Whilst there are multiple radio band settings presented (Automatic, JAPAN BAND, USA Band, Cellular and PCS) none of these can be chosen. If I attempt to choose any of the options I am presented with the message Set [...] Unsuccessful (where ... represents the band choice, e.g.: JAPAN BAND).
Furthermore when I look at the list of preferred network type (towards the bottom of the 'Phone info' page) I am unable to select a match which I believe suits the Telstra network!
On my working phone, HTC One M9 (from which I am using the SIM) I see the option 'GSM / WCDMA / LTE auto', but this is not available on the Motorola.
The more I investigate the more I think that I may need to use a different radio file...
With your KKBL ROM being such an unknown (eg is the radio really meant for Australia or is it an XT907 radio ) I really think you should downgrade back to JBBL using the telstra specific firmware.
