Why Galaxy Tab over Another Brand?

With the approaching release of the 10.1 and seemingly the 8.9 Galaxy Tabs, there are alot of choices going to be available on the market for Android Tablets. Many other big names are joining the fray...so many of you may be wondering...why Samsung vs the other makers?
Having owned nearly every brand of tablet as they've come along (except Xoom) (yes, I'm a gadget whore...I can't help it!) my preference is with a Samsung Device...here's why:
1) For most of the other vendors it's a first attempt at a Tablet device. Kinks will have to be worked out, and it usually ends up being a 3-6 month adventure of updates to get things smooth. Essentially making the device dated and obsolete at that time. (August 2011..Tegra4 anyone?) Mind you, Samsung had to learn some of these same things with a device that's been on the market for months now...so they've got a head start. Aside from the bugs with a new OS (Honeycomb), they should be releasing a damn solid piece of equipment.
2) Entertainment...so far, none of the other brands have services that at least strive to be similar to iTunes. Samsung Media Hub and it's music service have a way to go yet, but they give me options for entertainment right out of the box. I've rented a few movies through it...and quality & convenience is perfect for what I was looking for.
3) Hardware development...Samsung makes damn good hardware, and I wouldn't be surprised to see those Dual Core cpu's (Exynos...or sumthin?) they've been readying in future Tabs instead of Tegra chips. Aside from that, build quality has never been an issue IMO.
4) Brand Device cooperation...like Apple, Samsung has a whole slew of other devices that I'm sure will play nice with our Tabs. There are a few apps in the market that already point to this direction in the future.
5) Popularity - Samsung has an edge here...and for External Development sake, that's good for the end-user, us. Yes HTC has a huge following in the phone forums, and that will automatically spill over into their Tablets...but like I said, it will be their first venture into that category. The Vibrant forums are continually active and exciting, tho the current Tab forum seems overrun with crickets for the most part. There's still a few devoted devs cranking out Galaxy Tab Rom Goodness!
Don't get me wrong, there ARE some negatives...at the forefront of those is an outdated file system and bloated UI, both of which lag the Samsung devices. I'm hoping Honeycomb will eliminate at least the UI issues, as none of us wants to see Touch-Wiz overlaid on top of the hot 3.0 screenage. We can only keep our fingers crossed at Sammys use of RFS filesystems.
In closing...HTC / Asus / and the others are gonna have to be extremely aggressive out of the gates with their first Tablets to give Samsung a run for our money. Hope my opinions have helped you gain some excitement for March 22nd, and Sammy's announcements! I'd love to see other input that adds onto, or against this train of thought.

22nd of March is when Samsung are having an event in Florida. It is widely thought that they will announce the 8.9" Tablet.
It is not known when either tablet will be released. Should be soon though.

Ok thanks. Basically I'm UK based and am desperate to get a tablet. For me its down to the xoom or the Samsung 10.1. I am already able to pre order the xoom for £500 but I am unsure on what to purchase. If the Samsung is much more it may come down to price, but at the moment they are pretty much neck and neck. The only thing I see putting the xoom in front is the SD card slot that should come into use in a near future update.

There is another advantage not mentioned that is huge for me personnally....
The 10.1 is so much lighter and slimmer than any other available or coming honeycomb tablet.
It's 130g lighter than the Xoom. It has had to sacrifice extra ports to do it, but weight for a portable device is an essential selling point.
I am sure though that connectivity issues will come via an additional port such as HDMI connectivity which is fine for many who actually rarely use Hdmi.

the only minus i can see in the product it the lack of microsd slot, det hdmi and usb part i dont care about, this is 2011 and in 2011 i normally use dlna og manage everything over Wifi and 3g, so what do i need to hdmi for? damn i can't wait to this tablet comes out!

Agreed...I could care less about HDMI port. USB connectivity irks me a little, and seeming lack of SD card slot as well. However, 16gb should be just fine as I'll continue to use my phone as my music player as it's more portable. Video storage might be a concern though.
HMDI output for me is not important, as I have an HTPC setup in my living room. Haven't had cable tv in a few years, using various streaming services for entertainment.

The only reason I wouldn't get the Samsung tablets is because of the cheap plastic Samsung is obsessed with using on all of their devices. Hands-on with the 10.1 have already belittled the device to a "cheap plastic toy tablet". No other well-known major Android manufacturer has taken this approach with any of the announced Honeycomb tablets.
Even the presumed aluminum rim around the GTab 10.1 is said to be plastic. The only reason I will consider their tablets is because of the specs. More specifically the screen.

Couple things to consider here...weight for one. Cost would also factor in. If they release the 10.1 around Xoom pricing, that'd be a mistake. Although, have you held the Xoom? It feels almost identical to the Viewsonic GTab, perhaps slightly more solid because of the aluminum....all the tablets I've gone through have had similar builds, except the iPad. I loved the iPad's durability...just not the closed OS & aspect ratio / build format. I prefer the widescreen build.
The plastic is durable however, without a doubt. In all the posts here on XDA, I've rarely seen a comment regarding the body of a device breaking. Most have shattered a screen. I've dropped my devices extremely rarely...maybe two times over the course of a year, and that was my Vibrant phone. Not even a scratch.Am I overly cautious? Not that I've noticed...I just don't take the tablets when I'm hiking / biking / wrestling / playing football. Plus, I like to sell them when I get bored, so I like them to be mint. Not to mention I NEVER use a device without a case, personal preference.

I don't mind with plastic from Samsung as I own Nexus S. The Nexus S uses this kind of plastic compare to better material from HTC (I own HTC Desire as well). It is still good and durable.
For table features, after I saw and read almost read everything about Xoom:
- SD card slot is not that important for me as long as there is 64GB model. This came from Nexus S that has no SD card either. I can live with no SD card slot. The only thing SD card slot is needed if you really (REALLY) stuff everything to the tablets. That's why 64GB model is important.
- HDMI out is also not important for me as I have dedicated media player at home to stream from my 4TB NAS.
- USB port to connect and sync files with PC. This is required and handy for works. But, probably I can live with accessories if I have to Meaning, a proprietary connector via main connector?
- SCREEN, I really expect much better than Xoom washed out LCD. From 11 minutes video that I saw of GTab 10.1, this might be OK. The screen looks better than Xoom
- Lightness. The lighter, the better, period.
Well, all this Android Honeycomb tablets are just "first generation". There will be some lack of features, half baked features, annoyances and issues. But that's fine for first generation. So, my purchase will be based on that mind set. I will NOT expect much
Most probably I will just simply buy another upcoming hardware in 2012! Which I expect, the Android Honeycomb will be mature enough. And give this 2011 tablet to my wife or as "a toy" for my little daughter

One thing to note is that even though the Samsung's products are made of plastic, my Vibrant couldn't be more durable. I like having a metal body which HTC usually has but, even if the Vibrant feels cheap and plasticky, I have used it without a case or screen protector for the entire time I've had it. Dropped it a few times and it hasn't suffered a scratch. Other than that I believe the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be a solid device and Samsung uses good hardware so no worries there. Only problems I see are the ports on this device and also how updates are going to go. If it's like any of the Galaxy S phones then there might be a few problems. But this is looking to be a top of the line device.

There were 86 new Android tablet models on display at CES

Go for the Eeepad or wait for the Galaxy Tab 10.1?

Im conidering a tablet but torn between the ASUS eeePad Transformer and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Without doubt the Samsung has the wow factor, but they're making such a hash of releasing it by all accounts. Hardware specs don't appear to be fully finalised, it appears the thing version won't have a memory card slot, the camera only 3MP and it's still not released and there's no release date for the UK.
The ASUS meanwhile according to the videos I've seen have excellent sound which should be good for media playback.
Im worried about the lack of 3G but remember I could use my Galaxy S as a WiFi hotspot for those times I need to use this on the go.
The ASUS is released, has 3.1, some decent features and a great price.
Is there any reason I should wait for the Samsung and not get the ASUS? Is there any other tablet that comes close for the price? I was looking at the Xoom, and the Flywer and everything in between, but they all seemed to be much more expensive.
What do you guys think?
Does the Eeepad also support DivX playback?

For divx it's ok but for HD videos all the tegra 2 tablets can't handle them very well.
Just want to be sure you won't expect much about it. That said, the transformer has a nice ips screen but with some bleeds (related to ips technology) and a microsd slot. The galaxy tab have no microsd slot.
The sound on the asus is not very good, I can't speak about the galaxy tab on this front.
Performance wise all tegra 2 tablets are more or less the same what you should look at are expansion ports, form factor and screen. So ask yourself what you want.

bottom line is if you want android but with an ipad formfactor in the sense of no built in expandibility but thin and light then go samsung.
If oyu want something that is less expensive, had HDMi and microsd built in, is cheaper, and has optional keyboard dock turning it into a longer battery life android netbook with usb ports and full sd card slot, then Go Asus. Asus however will be a bit heavier and thicker and from my experience the build quality will suffer a bit compared to the samsung.

I just read the Anandtech Review on the Galaxy Tab 10.1.The 10.1 wins with its thin form factor, weight and IPAD like contours, while the TF beats out the 10.1 on all benchmarks and battery life and the convenience of the dock.

I'm in the same situation as the OP with regards to the Samsung and the Asus (I've recently returned a TF), I'm now waiting for Samsung to release definitive specs and price here in the UK. I've just returned from my local PC World, they've no news on the GT 10.1 at all. Whilst I was there I had a look at the range of tablets on display and I have to say the Transformer looked better than I remember.

Yep, form factor definatley goes to Samsung, along with build quality.
As for Asus, its still a great looking tablet, and comfortable to hold in my opinion. Has the HDMI, memory card slot, ability to be docked, and is $100 less. Its sort of a no brainer for me, but depends what you want to do with it.

For some of the reasons mentioned by aibo I would wait for a tegra-3 tablet. This is especially true if you are interested in any type of HD media. The more I play with my TF the more I realize the tegra-2 is just underpowered trying to play any kind of HD content with HD sound. Don't get me wrong I love my TF and knowing what I know now if I really wanted to wait I would also wait for a tegra-3 Asus.
See the should I wait for the tegra-3 thread fo even more reasons to wait.

All the more reason to get the Asus. Get base model which is 399. Then next year give it to family or sell it for 200 and get a kalel tegra 3
This way you get to enjoy a tablet for a year and the 100 you save plus selling your used Asus will get you most of the way to the latest and greatest.

How can the GT have a WOW factor? it's just the same as the Xoom, the Acer Iconia, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc unless of course you mean WOW in Greek: Wimadia, Objectori, Wimbararia (The same as all the rest)

And +$100 more. Is it really worth it? The TF101 is pretty light as it is already.
With +$100 more you can get yourself a TF101 32GB AND A MicroSD slot whereas $499.99 Galaxy Tab 10.1 you'll get 16GB without a MicroSD.

Also, according to Anandtech, 10.1 doesn't have as much glare on the screen as the Transformer. I won't go into color saturation as that's preference of the user.
Too much speculating and assumptions in these threads. I doubt many here have actually had both in hand.

I meant more along in this specific thread. Perhaps OP should also post this in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 forums as well as there are some users that have jumped ship from the Transformer to the 10.1 to get others opinions instead of Transformer users that haven't tried the 10.1 yet.

I've owned both and trust me...the weight difference is a major advantage for the Tab...MAJOR!

Not entirely true. It's just not built in. Sure you'll have to buy the adapter for it, but it is indeed expandable.

no hdmi is a deal breaker also.

I am considering to go for transformer.

price was the big thing for me. $100 is a good chunk of money for something of similar specs.

I've been comparing the SGT 10.1 with the Transformer for awhile now, and I'm not exactly sure which one to get :\ The Transformer has quite a few problems, whereas I haven't heard of some for the Tab. I just want to know which TABLET is better, no keyboards attached.
Obviously since I am posting on a SGT 10.1 thread, many will say Samsung. I have also posted on the Transformer to get better details.

For longevity and superior hardware, stick with SGT. Also the speakers and display on SGT is better than any current tablet in the market. Rest is up to you to decide which one you want to keep.

Ive owned both and the transformer was a piece of junk in my opinion. Terrible build quality issues that went unaddressed (returned three times and still didn't have one that worked properly). The build quality is loads better on the galaxy tab, well worth the difference in price in my opinion.

I went through 5 Transformers because of light bleeding before giving up and purchasing a Galaxy Tab ($50 off...thanks Staples).
I still don't hate the Transformer. I think it would be a fantastic device if there weren't build quality issues.
I can say (as unbiased as I can) that the GT is better than the Transformer. The screen is noticeably better and the speakers are MUCH louder on my GT than any of the Transformers I had. The quality of the GT is much better and my GT has no light bleed whatsoever.
While it still annoys me that Samsung didn't put a microSD card slot on it, I think the other areas more than make up for this.
By the way, whoever at Samsung made the decision not to put a microSD slot on the GT should be fired. Such a small addition would have put the GT way out in front for best tablets IMHO. With no microSD card, its like they gave up just a few inches from the finish line.

Light or heavy. That'a the question.

I owned the TF (well, 3 problematic ones) and currently own the GT (haven't looked back). Basically, if you're willing to put up with build quality issues (trust me, your TF WILL have something wrong with it), then you can even start comparing the two.
Bottom line is, if you already own a laptop/netbook, get the GT. The TF shines when docked, and even then, it falls short of the entry-level netbook (software issues).

I've had 2 TFs, one with power button sticking issues and other with microSD card reader issues.
Both returned and waiting for my tab to come soon.
TF was pretty dispointment as in quality control. What are the odds of getting bad ones back to back? (and the troubles I went through returning and getting new ones) I would think very hard before buying any ASUS products now and on.
I couldn't say much about the tab yet since I'm still waiting for it.

I have a transformer with no build issues. The asus is a little wider, a little thicker, and a little heavier than my SGT. But it runs the same apps just as well, and was $100 less than the SGT. Kind of like the iPad 1 to the SGT being an iPad2 in dimensions, yet the Asus has a better rear camera, microSD, and that great keyboard dock as an accessories.

I have both tablets and the only thing I like better about the transformer is the sd card. I got one of the better built transformers, with my only complaint being a small amount of light bleed in one corner, but I still do not trust the build quality of it in the long run. I returned a xoom (staples didn't have any galaxy tabs in stock at the time) to get the tab and plan to sell the transformer and rebuy another xoom before the staples $100 off deal ends. The xoom feels like it is a much higher quality piece of hardware, and I am willing to deal with the extra weight and slightly less vibrant screen for what I feel is a better built device.

So which one do you like better? Xoom or the SGT? Assuming the TF is out of the picture.

Yeah same question. My brother is considering the xoom since i already have the SGT. SHould he?

I chose the GT after 3 exchanges on the Asus. The GT screen is just so much better than the xoom and I like that its thin and light Asus and xoom are pretty heavy.

I can't comment on ASUS vs SGT, but as for the Xoom vs SGT you really have to decide what you're going to be using the tablet for.
Xoom is going to give you 2x flash space for the same money, plus the device is expandable with an SD card, HDMI, and USB host plugs. And as others have mentioned, the Xoom is built like a tank compared to other tablets.
That being said, the screen on the SGT is amazing. Go to staples and compare, you'll see. The Xoom will look washed out, whereas the SGT will be bright and vibrant. The SGT is also super thin and light. If you plan on holding your tablet a lot, this is important.
I went with the SGT because I don't need the HDMI and USB ports. I also don't put much media on it because I stream everything, so the flash space and SD card are all but useless to me. And lastly, I've very careful with my devices. My phones have always gone naked and have never had a screen scratch, thus I choose light weight and thinness over stronger materials. The only selling point of the Xoom that was appealing to me over the SGT is the fact that it is the Nexus of the tablets and will see Android updates years before we do.
Bottom line? Xoom or SGT, you'll be happy either way

I have the sgt and my broter has the xoom. I personaly like the sgt better because it is ligter, the speekers are better and the screen looks less washed out. Although with the xom you get much more space to put movies and music on.

I was considering both but after the stories I've heard about the Asus I was swayed with the SGT. The build quality issues on the Asus deterred me from getting that one wasn't going to risk having to go through 1+ devices to find the perfect one, saying that the SGT could prove to be the same, here's hoping there is nothing wrong with it when it arrives.

GTab 32GB $529.99 on eBay right now. Brand new! Just saw it under my daily deals. LOL You guys are lucky.

Quad core asus tablet announced , would you upgrade

A the title says Asus announced a quad core Nvidia tegra 3 tablet ,

like you I'm very tempted esp after seeing the pics of the new Transformer Prime. If I don't do an impulsive purchase, I'll wait to see if Samsung is going to release a Quadcore GTab.

If it's thinner, lighter and price-wise = or cheaper than the GT then hell yeah!

Maybe in a year or two, but I don't feel the need to update just because there's a newer faster Tablet on the horizon. I bought my Tab for what it's capable of doing right now.

On the emulator they found the tablet interface so ICS IS DESIGNED FOR TABLETS ALSO see the vudeo on engadget

Who wouldn't like a faster processor? They're just planning to launch a 3G version of the Transformer I this month and it'll only have a HSPA 14.4 modem. I (finally) got my new 3G Tab from the UK yesterday. It's got a different display, pulls 8GB down on AT&T, and the KH3 ROM vastly improves screen responsiveness and transitions. Hardware's just one part of the equation. Samsung's audio and video codec support is second to none. If I abandon ship, it'll be to a quad-core Samsung Tab.

I'm still setting up the new Tab. Once I'm done I'll post the differences between it and the U.S. Wi-Fi version I've been using. The display's definately different. Maybe they updated it because of the Newton rings. When you look at it from the side, you can see a very subtle texture under the glass. Also, the color temperature is cooler and colors aren't as exagerated. It's a definite improvement (to me). The back has also been changed. It's now solid black with a soft-touch coating vs. the metal-esque grey plastic of the Wi-Fi version. The UK 3G Tabs were received by resellers last week and have an October build date.

If the build quality on the quad core is the same as the reg TF, then NO. The TF is a crappy product. The Tab is much more refined.
Putting a Turbo charged engine in a lawnmower doesn't make it a porsche.

The build quality on my TF is perfectly fine - it is in no way a crappy product.
In my opinion, the TF is a different class of product to the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is a definitely a "purer" tablet experience, and in general I do prefer my GT10.1 over my TF.
However, when I go on vacation next week, I will probably leave my GT10.1 at home, and take the Asus TF with dock instead because of the advantages the dock brings.
If the new TF can bring the tablet experience of the GT10.1, with the flexibility of the TF dock, I'm sold.

I have got the uk 3g here in Egypt from Vodafone official store and I liked the black back allot more valuable than both metallic and write backs, thanks for your reply and wating for your comparison between the two versions

I wouldn't call it "crappy" but I'd say it's pretty average. I looked at all the tablets before buying the G-Tab and none of them were as refined h/w wise. The Transformer's I played with all creaked and the display wan't as good as the G-Tab. Friends have Transformer's and some have had to either exchange them or send them in for service for various h/w issues. (And I know, the G-Tab has Newton rings but it hasn't effected my two or those owned by friends.)

is it not scaring any of you that quad cores are coming so fast.. it means google and the manifacturers did not even give their tablets a year to sit on their thrones (not even a half year for many ones).. it gives me the fear of being outdated "abnormally fast" (please mind that statement=abnormally fast) no matter what i buy... and now there is the risk for our tegra 2 tablets not to get ICS.. it also scares me to be outdated easily again.. i mean, if the biggest rival apple is still caring about their iphone 3gs even after 2 more new models, what manifacturers are doing sounds so nokia-ish (like giving birth to many children but not caring about their growing).. is it not?

No plans on switching. Waiting for ICS update and I will be happy.
Regarding TF201 I don't really fancy the "rings" used on on the back and the bezel that is big. But it got better battery with the dock (hence the big bezel).
Love my Galaxy Tab and wouldn't trade it for a Transformer.

The tab I want next is based on these factors:
- form: how thin and portable is it
- display: must be vivid and sharp, no les than samsung quality
- expansion: absolute must. itis the single place the STab failed on for me
- price: has to be market price or better, no first adopter prices please
- processor: the more powerful a processor you get, the less likley you will need to upgarde for a longer term
I will hold no loyalty to a brand, but some brands do things better insome areas than others. For now, the Asus pad, at least visually, looks pretty sweet.

If the quad/tegra3 can play my 1080p mkv content off my portable hard drive while connected to a HDTV with the HDMI cable plugged in then I'm sold.
As of right now when I bring movies home to my parents for my dad to watch I still have to use my bulky laptop. I got the tab in hopes I could decrease my travel weight. Alas I've only added as now I bring my tab AND my laptop.
So sad.

Taking Back And Waiting A Month.

Since they just announced the pre-order and release date for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 I decided to take my regular 10.1 back, since i'm still within my 30 day return period.
Really excited for the new one with all the upgrades. Having a SD card slot, 2 speakers on the front of the Tab and adding IR so I can control my home theater components, and getting official ICS on it. I can't wait.
Pre-order May 7th, release date on the 22nd.

It's actually a downgrade, not an upgrade. It's thicker and heavier which means that either the components were changed or the design has been changed to make it cheaper to build. There's no flash on the camera either. It's got an OMAP chip vs. Teg2 so it's pretty much a lateral move but I'm sure the OMAP will be better at local video playback (anything would). The SD card's a benefit but ICS is a wash since the orignal G-Tab will get it (eventually) too. The 8GB is supposed to be $399 while the 16GB will be $449 so it's still no bargain.

That's what I'm waiting for. I love my 3G Tab and the only thing that (for me) needs improvement is a more powerful processor. For taking notes and such at work the S-Pen's also a cool and practical feature. It's been delayed until June so Samsung can put a new quad-core Exynos SoC in and I'm hoping they bump up the display resolution while they're at it.

I'm in a similar predicament. I want to get the Galaxy tab but now with Tab 2 launching i'm not sure if it's a wise decision. I feel like I will have buyers remorse if I buy the Galaxy tab 2 just because it has older components and a step backwards. Galaxy Note 10.1 won't arrive till June if its not pushed back (high possibility of delays). The Transformer Prime was another Tablet I was looking at but with the wifi and gps issues not too sure about Asus. So now sadly, I may look at the new iPad. Anyone else have any other suggestions?

You can pre-order both the Acer A510 and new non-Prime Transformer (TF300) that has a plastic back cover and shouldn't have wireless issues. They're $449 and $399 respectively with the Acer being the more upscale of the two. Asus' build quality and QC have been sketchy and I haven't really followed Acer to offer any opinion. Costco's got some good deals on the G-Tab 1 and a ninety day return policy which should fall in to the launch timeframe for the Note.

Yeah in a lot of ways, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is a DOWNGRADE over the original GT 10.1. The SD card slot is nice, but when you think about it, you can just get a 32 GB Tab 10.1 and be fine. I like the new placement of the speakers, but that's about it. Front facing camera is only VGA. No flash for the rear camera. Thicker and cheaper build quality. Same PLS screen, same res, same processor speed. The original 10.1 with the Tegra 2 would be better for gaming, while the OMAP should be better for HD vid watching. Although I have to say, if you encode a 720p file properly, it looks great on the Tab and plays really well. You don't need to play 1080p on these things.
If I didn't have a tablet right now and was looking to invest 400 dollars for a high-end one, I would honestly wait a few months. I'd wait either for the upgraded Transformer Prime with the higher res. screen and no GPS/WiFI issues, the Acer, the Galaxy Note 10.1, or even whatever quadcore Exynos Tab Samsung is working on at the moment.
Besides all of that, cheaper 7 inch Tegra 3 tablets are coming soon. Now is not a good time to be tablet shopping.

When I looked at the size and weight, and it was almost the same. From what I've read it's the same height and width, only 3 or 4 more ounces. Not a dramatic difference in weight. Hopefully, they kept the same shape and dimensions
so it will fit in my Galaxy Tab Book Cover Case.
I know there was no real upgrade in terms of specs, but, the additions they did make was huge to me. Adding ICS, something the previous Tab will probably not get, and if it does, it will be several months away. I had a ICS rom on mine and it was nice, but, lacking in some areas of true ICS. I like the speakers on the front at the top and bottom better than on the sides. It should make a huge difference when watching movies or listening to music. You can thank the German courts for this and Apple. Throw in the fact they added a space for SD card storage to expand, IR capabilities, will be great controlling my Home Theater components and it's a winner to me at the $399 price tag.
If it was higher than that, I would say no, but, at this price point, it's nice.

Sadly, I think you are right. I will have to be patient and wait and see what happens next. I guess with Google IO coming up soon the emphasis will be completely on JellyBean and ICS will be obsolete already by the time summer comes around.

The original Tab 10.1 is getting ICS. Samsung have confirmed it at several different points in time. WHEN will we get it, that's another story, but it's coming. It's being worked on. They even said that it was number 2 on the their priority list, right behind the GS II which has already started it's ICS rollout globally. It can't be that far away
So if you factor out ICS as an advantage (which you should), the only two things the Tab 2 has over the Tab 1 are the modified speaker positions and debatably the microSD storage (I say that because the storage sizes are halved on the Tab 2). Everything else that's different on the Tab 2 is a disadvantage.
Sorry to say, but it's the truth. And that 399 price point doesn't make it any easier to swallow, especially when you consider that if you can be patient for another couple of months, you'll have a huge selection of Tegra 3 tablets at all different sizes, all different price points, made by different companies.
Believe me, I'm not hating here. I got my Tab 10.1 last July and I absolutely love it. But right now, if 300 or 400 is my sweet spot for a tablet, I'm holding off for a couple of months. The Tab 2 isn't worth that.

screw this..selling it and getting the asus prime

I would also hold off for the note 10.1... Better hardware AND the s-pen will give it functionality that no other tab has. I have tried the regular note (5.3) and the pen works very well, very cool to jot down stuff quickly or to add comments/notes to documents.

Now they are saying they halted production of the Tab 2 for some upgrades. One of them being a quad core processor with their latest chip.

I read that also... it definitely has me wondering if this will delay us OG Tab owners from getting the ICS update in May. I have no doubt that the appeal of ICS is a selling point for Samsung and potential Tab-2 customers might settle for the original tab if it gets ICS prior to the release of the Tab-2.
