At&ts acquisition of T mobile might be very good for Sprint

At&t's acquisition of Tmobile may very well be one of the best things that ever hapened to sprint, leaving only one low priced nation wide carrier in the country. I predict that millions of former tmobile customers will have no where else to go but Sprint. Anyone disagree / agree with my prerediction? (excuae poor writing skills)

What should Sprint do with Clearwire?

I dont havea clue. As I understand it, Sprint has plans of using its 800mhz spectrum for future 4g service. I don't know what they could possibly do with Clear's 2.5 GHZ spectrum.

Sprint is worth about $267.64, T-Mobile is more than they can afford pal.

If this merger goes anything like the AT&T/Cingular merger the combined new company is bound to lose a ton of subscribers. That merger was a clusterfudge and a half and is the reason I'm a Sprint customer now.

If I had a good chunck of money lying around I'd invest in Sprint as they have big plans for the future. Restating what someone above already said, AT&T aquiring T-Mobile is just going ot increase Sprint's number of subscribers, paired with their rumored and "unofficial confirmed?" lol if that makes sense - decision to move to LTE and finally topped with next weeks CTIA event where some REAL nice phones / tablets are expected to drop - Sprint is in for a subscriber boost. I'm on Sprint right now with my Epic 4G and had plans to possibly switch to t-mobile or At&t but now that At&t is buying Tmobile and will probably eliminate all Unlimited plans and sprint will get some actually nice phones that don't have a keyboard - I am definitely going to be sticking around! Oh and besides all that I just moved to West hills and now I have beautiful 4G coverage ALL through my house with 5 -7 Mbps down and 1 - 2 Mbps up So I'm one happy camper and its all about to get better when I upgrade the day Sprint releases their new phones to the public! Man waiting really pays off!
Any more opinions anyone?

Wow, you're quite lucky - or maybe I just wasn't so lucky. They screwed me around quite badly. I'm not going to turn this into a flame AT&T thread, but generally speaking I was with AT&T since the analog days and they made it impossible for me to continue to use them as a direct result of that merger. Took my 3 lines to Sprint and never looked back. Best wishes to any happy T-mobile users out there who are going to be converted if the feds approve this.

Sorry, I have to rant here for a minute...
1st, I had just bought a new phone on the AT&T blue side. When they wanted to migrate me to the "orange" billing system because I wanted to up my minutes they told me I'd have to buy another new phone and I wasn't eligible for an upgrade. I wound up unlocking my phone myself and using the orange sim in it anyway.
Also, at the time I had 3 phone lines in 2 different area codes. They told me the new billing system wouldn't let me do that and I had to change a phone number that I had with them for several years. I ended up having to split the one line off onto its own account which cost quite a bit more per month but had no choice at the time and was generally happy with my coverage and equipment otherwise.
I also regularly dialed international long distance @ 85 cents/minute which equated to several hundred dollars a month (over $700 one month) which I always paid on time and with a smile. Shortly after they migrated my account I had an emergency while traveling and desperately needed to dial international which I was no longer able to do. I called AT&T post haste and they told me "We're sorry, since you've been a customer less than 90 days we cannot permit you to dial internationally". I explained the situation that since migrating to the new billing system I had a new account number and provided my old account number for them to verify. They claimed there was nothing they could do and I could appeal to a manager which would take 7-10 business days. I wound up talking to a complete stranger about my situation who let me use his landline. We had no idea what it would cost him to dial international from his line, so I gave him $50 which he refused but I insisted he take it. I moved carriers within days of that ordeal.
Thats just no way to treat an 8 year loyal, multi-line, international dialing customer dealing with a life and death situation. Money was never the issue, terrible customer relations was. Thats why I want to wish all those poor TMO users good luck - I hope they don't have the same experience.

great 4 sprint but this is BAD 4 us, y. cause there would be NOTHING to stop sprint from RAISING their rates or eliminating the unlimited plan. at&t would be the only GSM cell company in the US. in a way it would be a MONOPOLY! out of the 4 top carriers, sprint was the cheapest followed by t-mobile. FCC NEEDS 2 SQUASH THIS DEAL! unless metro pcs gets more towers, mark my words WE WILL SUFFER!

According to a very well known site to me www.tmonews.com, the site states that At&t and T-Mobile agreed to join forces and will soon be working together. So what does this mean for us streak users? Feel free to post your thoughts and opinions in this thread.

I can somewhat relate. I was with tmo for the past 7 years and I made the switch to at&t only a month ago because I wanted the streak. I agree that tmo had amazing customer support and their plans were pretty good as well, and to see both company's joining forces is not a bad thing in my eyes. I only hope that at&t will take in some of t-mobiles plans and offer it to us. To have the ability of 5GB data cap wouldn't be that bad and to not have to pay $10 bucks for an extra gig would be even better.

This is bad. It will allow carriers to do horrible things to their customers like no unlimited data. BAD BAD BAD.

I personally have been trying to convince the wife to change to AT&T or Verizon so welcome this change.

It's good IMO. T-Mobile wanted to be bought, it was going to happen eventually. Instead of being purchased by Sprint and having to be converted to CDMA, they'll be purchased by ATT and will insist in increasing network density for 3G and LTE.
It does leave a possible void in the discount arena, but Sprint and MetroPCS can fill that. T-Mobile lost 400K subscribers last quarter, something had to happen.
I wouldn't mind seeing Sprint gobble up Metro (like techs in cdma) and giving us 3 solid choices. Having spotty service carriers like T-Mobile helps no one.
I did read that in the short term ATT and TMobile towers would go dual mode so each group of customers would get better service. So, right from the start that's a positive.
I'm going to be mad if ATT treats this as anything more then a means to resolve there density issues.

Do not like. I am on att because its way cheaper to pay my parents to be on their plan than to have my own. I figured once I start making more money I would switch to tmobile because they have good phones and impose less carrier restrictions. Now they are joining att who (would like) to rule their plans like tyrants. Now I dont know what I'm going to do.

It's funny, we (USA) spent a lot of money in an anti-trust case in the early 80's
to break up "ma-bell", because they were a monopoly, and some 30 years later, they have just about put themselves back together again.

I am a TMo user and been there with them since the day i came to US(Almost 8+ years).
Even though I can only use Streak with EDGE speed with TMo, I am okay with it.
But once the network merge is complete, would that mean that with TMo simcard in Streak, I now will have 3G speed?

this is actually a good thing. att said this pushes their network 5 years in development, and they will have 60mbit 4g lte coverage to 95% of americans. users on both networks will have access to all 3g gsm bands. and with the new capacity load capabilities, att can lower their prices to compete more with verizon. i actually do see verizon buying sprint too.
i was thinking of was actually thinking of selling my streak and buying a samsung infuse 4g. its a faster phone with an almost as large but higher quality screen and better cameras and is a "4g" phone but its hspa+ not lte and with this announcement, im going to wait till later this year when the lte phones come out.

For me it's a GOOD THING!
I'm 99% about THE PHONES. If this merger opens up the TMOus 3G/4G bands to ATT users, then the more progressive/higher end TMO european phones would become available here sooner. That's a great thing imo.

i think people need to look at this from a business point of view . If At&T does end up buying Tmobile this will be bad for the customer, because that is one less company At&T has to fight a price war with and being that att and Tmobile are the only GSM networks out there that makes them the only player in the GSM arena .
everyone needs to remember the more options out there the better that will keep each company in check and fight for every customer out there with better prices and plans .
some will say will it will make my signal better and make the network faster and make things happen alot faster as far as 4g becoming the stranded thing . i for one dont care about speed if i am going to end up paying like crazy for KB's of data att is starting to nickel and dime the customer and this is coming from an att customer

AT&T has several call centers around the bay area so I doubt they will go over seas. It would be unfortunate for the Springfield employees to lose their jobs so hopefully AT&T will just bring them on board. There is no way they could handle that many additional accounts without adding employees.
That said, being a call center person myself job stability is never guaranteed when dealing with tech products. It comes with the territory.

Moving out of April, May should see its share of Android, as well. May 5th is given as the day we can expect the the 4G LTE LG Revolution , and the Motorola DROID BIONIC is loosely listed with a May release, as well. Also without certain dates but listed as launching in May (or later) are the Motorola Droid X 2 and, get this, the Samsung Galaxy S II. I don’t think we expected the US launch of the Galaxy S followup to come so soon, but Verizon is suggesting it might be so (unless they are simply suggesting the launch will come after May).

The international version will work with AT&T but keep in mind AT&T does not offer unlimited data or free tethering.

I am on a iphone unlimited plan with them right now. I just can't justify to drop that amount of money for a phone when the plans will cost me the same as getting a subsidized one from them.
Verizon is good in my area, but ATT is better, and the 3G is almost 3 times as fast as Verizon. I also hate the voice quality of Verizon, my area is too saturated with Verizon customers.

Of course if you are already grandfathered into AT&T's unlimited plan then you're fine. I would still be weary of tethering though because there have been recent news of AT&T cracking down on unauthorized tethering for those who don't pay for it.

It says "Samsung Charge" 4/7/2011 right in the pic.

Hopefully this means that T-Mobile will see the SGS2 by late April. That would be the case since T-Mobile is GSM right?

This won't launch in May. Doesn't make sense. Why would they release this less than a month after the Charge? Plus, each carrier will make their alterations, just like they did with the original GS line, and that will push a release well into the summer/fall

This is correct T-Mobile does use GSM bands.

The Charge is not planning to be released as a flagship device so it is not competing with it. Also since they already have a roadmap out, that means they already have at least several samples for the network and are working on bugs and extra support to meet a deadline.

That roadmap is highly suspect... Many are skeptical of it's authenticity. And the Charge isn't a flagship device for Samsung, but it does have the Droid branding for Verizon, so it doesn't make sense that VZW would launch a superior device a month later. Just my .02

While I agree the authenticity is skeptical it is the only thing we have to go on thus far and we have no received word from Verizon or anyone else proving this false. Also my point was that it was not a flagship device for Verizon either.

Because FCC compliance isn't needed yet. They have no intention of selling it right now. Go look at how far out the Xoom was sent to the FCC. 2 weeks before release. Same thing with iPhones... Manufacturers hold FCC checks until the last possible moment to keep their devices as close to secret as possible. I expect FCC submission to happen about 2 weeks before release.
As for the LTE, the VZW rep was the one that said it had LTE, but I could not confirm it on the actual device as there was no data connection enabled in the software at all. Perhaps that's even more of a confirmation as we have all seen the ATT devices with functioning data connections.
So maybe they haven't gotten the LTE drivers ready for the LTE chipset in the phone??? Or maybe she just had a GSM device and turned off the data so when she went into VZW they wouldn't see "AT&T" on the screen??
Don't know, but I couldn't verify the rep's claims when I looked at the phone. I do know what was both said to me on 3/19 and now what was leaked to phandroid...and they both jive.

So if Verizon grabs our lovely S2 and refits it with a CDMA radio are we looking at the same BS Verizon produced with the Droid 2 Global where it's a """Global Phone""" but it won't work on any other network because Verzion is a criminal organization? Will Sprint/AT&T have the buying power to keep GSM based S2s in circulation? Living here in Canada it's frustrating to be technologically backwards, it's even more frustrating when a greedy corporation like Verizon locks the phone down in the US, eliminating it's availabilty in Canada and making it virtually impossible to get one down there unlocked for up here.....

I suppose I could always order a phone from the international market but with it's market pull (considering it's the only phone that doesn't seem to have any compromise except for the 3 button versus 4 button push) it'll take forever to get one :/

No amount of money can protect you from problems.

Sprints 4G has not gone down and we have five times the amount of users. 3G works fine in most areas except his borough on NY.

You know I could explain what went wrong here, but I'm slightly enjoying the I told you so feeling. Also, I'd rather wait to see it reach 2 million LTE subscribers before I mention my reasoning. Having said that, Verizon's LTE strategy is fantastic for the consumers, and their 3G/4G offering is currently better than Sprint's. To say your carrier's 3G works fine everywhere but NYC is laughable and silly. Steps were made to make both 3G/4G more enjoyable for the customers, and your patience will be rewarded.

Sprints network works fine except areas being upgraded where towers are being removed and integrated into one, we know this already, so yes it works fine in most areas believe me. The only reason I mentioned NY is because that's his area.

Sprint's network works great, except where it doesn't. Their 4G has never gone down, especially where it hasn't gone up yet.

Well, apparently I don't live in "most areas". Speeds here in Reno, Nevada range from barely tolerable to pathetic. At my house I average about 200 kbs down with a low of 87 kbs to just over 500 kbs. At work, in the middle of town, it averages a little better, around 800 kbs, but is much more erratic with lows around 100 kbs, and very rare highs of around 1600 kbs. Bottom line though, virtually all other carriers are faster than Sprint is here, by a pretty good margin. And it has been that way for about six months now. And then their is the 4g that was promised by the end of the year when I got my phone last June, lets just say I am not holding my breath. I think it would be a pretty good bet that all the other carriers will have 4g here before Sprint does.
That said, I am not necessarily a disgruntled customer. With the exception of Verizon, Sprint has the best coverage here, But Verizon's 4g probably won't get here any sooner than Sprints. ATT's phone call quality sucks, even though their 3g data speeds are at least 2-3 times faster than Sprint on Sprints best day. And Tmobile has the best speed of all, but their coverage totally sucks. So they all have their pros and cons. I'll stick it out for another year, until my current contract runs out. If Sprint doesn't get their act together by then though, I will definitely consider moving on.

I've been with Sprint since 1999 and I'm not going anywhere; I'm a stick it through with them until their network gets better. However, I doubt that Sprint has been integrating the new system into the old one for over half a year in my area. In that amount of time, you would assume that at least one tower would be upgraded by now. My 3G service has 1x speeds everywhere I go in Miami.
Maybe it's one of those things where they can't flip the switch until EVERYTHING is upgraded......I don't know. However, anytime my girl sends me a short video of my kid doing something cute, it's a 20+ minute wait to download 5 MBs if I don't have 4G coverage or WiFi. I used to brag about how fast my phone was and now I try to sneak out of any conversation that has to do with data speeds. lol

DirtyShroom is thirsty to make his employer look good. Networks go down, and you act as if any of Sprint's network has never gone down before. Guess what, it has, and it probably will again.
BTW - I have absolutely no affiliation with Verizon. Don't even have an account with them (EVO/Sprint + ATT/iPhone). What I have said in the past is that:
A) Sprint's EVDO network in NYC is pathetic right now, and most signs point to overcapacity.
B) Verizon's LTE is both faster and more usable because of it's frequency.
So it seems as if Verizon's LTE network is currently down, doesn't effect me, and by the end of the day, it probably won't effect anybody.

So now you lie? You clearly stated you moved one of your two lines to Verizon. I'm just showing you that even Verizon has issues. This is clearly affecting all 500k users.

At the top of the tower in the same radio they'll have 1.9 LTE, 1.9 CDMA, 800 CDMA and in the future 800 LTE. With LightSquared they'll have 1600 LTE. Sprint plans to have 120 LTE markets by the end of 2012, with LTE capable devices starting to appear the middle of next year. WiMAX devices will continue to be sold through 2012.

that it will, and unfortunately with this new upgrade program Sprint is implementing, we're going to probably all be waiting till late 2012 or early 2013 to actually use that upgrade for any of the LTE capable devices.

Im sure Philly will be 1 of those first markets to get it so that good for me......
but how will this affect the Evo? Or will I have to upgrade to a LTE phone?

The Evo wont work with LTE, so if you want to use lte you would need to buy an lte phone.
As far as your evo, it seems like Wimax will still be supported for at least a few years, just no new expansion.

They still plan on using WiMAX along with LTE through 2012, so the EVO should be fine. After 2012 though, its not looking good for WiMAX. I would like to see Sprint's theoretical speed tests of this new network before I upgrade, though I'm certain they'll be much higher than WiMAX considering Verizon's speed tests.

Exactly...my mom still has the 1 yr upgrade come november, so I still may get the galaxy s II, but then we'll still have to upgrade come that time, once the LTE comes out and some actual LTE phone come out, but then by that point, the second wave of LTE phones will be out, so should have a decent selection.

Wasn't a huge fan of WiMAX. Hopefully with LTE Sprint will continue building out their network for better coverage. My upgrade is in June 2012 so it should be interesting to see what's out on the market.

Eh, WiMax sucks anyways. I get significantly faster HSPA+ speeds then WiMax, without all the coverage holes, building penetration issues, and battery drain. Good riddance.

So I guess I can stop checking the Clear coverage map for Wimax in my area.

well I should still have an upgrade come next june, so hopefully i'll be able to grab a LTE device.

If you knew anything you'd know that it has NOTHING to do with WiMax itself and that WiMax is actually a better standard with proper implementation/spectrum.

Beginning to think its all an illusion..yep..heard the same about 4G when the EVO came out and after...still no 4G here. Won't believe it until I see it then it will be time to buy another phone on some promised hype that never shows.
If Sprint ever does away with unlimited data or raises rates I will be gone or maybe that is just an illusion too.

I wanted to upgrade to iPhone but now I'm holding it untill Sprint lte comes out with new lte phones.

Why not just buy it and then sell it when you want to upgrade?
It's not like much of the value is going to be lost over the next 6 months.
There's not gonna be another iPhone for a year or whatever.

Exactly !! Wimax is way better than LTE and so is its design and network sprint and clearwire don't have the money to make such a huge change and upgrade to WiMAX Rev.2
