For those folks who wish to unlock their phone but do not wish to pay for the code, you can call AT&T and receive the code for it after August 22nd of this year.
Unfortunately due to contractual obligations on AT&T's part to motorola, they are not allowed to do it prior to that. Normally they will give me the unlock code for any of my phones at any time with exception to this one due to their exclusive contract for the Atrix.
If you can wait and are not in a huge rush for the code, wait until August 22nd.
Just figured I would share this.

Will allow you to use your phone on networks other then AT&T.
My question is why would Motorola care? This is AT&T placing this restriction on Motorola, when it's actually thiers.
if you cant wait, its $7.50 at cellunlock.net with the code "android50"

it doesn't work with the 15$/7.50$ anymore you have to choose the 40$/20$ option
Unless you are heading out of the country or want to use tmobile in the us, it might be better to wait until august

Free but it's not always the easiest thing to get. Sometime you just have to bite your teeth and go to ebay and get a code. THere is a couple posts on here with credible places to get unlock codes if T-Mobile wont give it up. Also make sure to mention you are going out of country and need the unlock code to use other cell phone companies in said country. Also I believe it's the law that they have to give it to you so also try to mention that.

Yes, T-mobile will do it for free if you call them and ask them that you need your phone unlocked.
Call T-mo, tell them "I am going to Japan (or whatever) next week and I need my phone unlocked so i can insert a foreign sim for two weeks."
Psychoace was correct.
They might try to tell you they have an international plan but be firm and they will email you an unlock code within 48 hours. I've done this on my wing and then my g1 in previous years. no hassles.
No you no need Generate the own Unlock code,You can unlock it simply using the unlock code purchase from this online site Mobile-unlocker.com/samsung-vibrant/rs2wp9/ and Unlock Samsung Vibrant.
Cool good to know.

If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.

Ya, the android world ain't looking too bright.
No sideloading
No tethering (for free)
No emulating
No rooting
No updating
So far the Atrix is GSM only so I'm not sure how much fervor there's going to be against VZW in this particular forum.
I'm more concerned about the messages ATT has been sending out to iphone users telling them to cease tethering or be automatically switched to a tethering plan.

This is actually a rather interesting situation. The DMCA and subsequent Apple lawsuit has established both the legislation and court precedent that you can unlock and jailbreak/root your mobile phone if you so wish (mobile phones only so far, tablets do not qualify under the DMCA exemption).
I believe any language in a VZW contract contradicting these consumer rights you're afforded under the law would be considered null and void. VZW limiting or terminating the data service you've paid for and signed a contract to receive just because you've rooted your phone should be considered a breach of contract by VZW and allow you to leave without ETF...
Maybe VZW's on to something! Buy phone, sign contract, root phone, get data suspended, terminate contract for breach of terms...Profit?

Why would they have to release any form of tracking software or update, they can already see what software you have loaded on your device. Any device running a program requiring root, automatically defines you as having rooted your device

Yea I actually just unlocked an Atrix today. Called ATT customer support line and hit 0 a lot, got a guy on the phone and said I bought this phone, not in contract, out of exclusivity period and dont have an ATT account, can I get the code to unlock it so that I can use it where I want to...he took about 5 minutes and got me the code.
Phone is on a Tmobile network in my friend's hands right now.
I wouldn't pay some site online and give them your IMEI number. Just seems sketchy to me.
Yeah as people said just call AT&T why pay when they will do it for free, when my friend sent me my Atrix i had to call them from the UK To get it unlocked and it was pretty simple and painless
I did, i called at&t but he said he cant give the code and that i must let the person who bought the mobile ask the for the code..i bought this mobile from someone in Lebanon ..any hacking way to unlock it? I tried the unlocking sites they sent me code but none of them worked..can any call at&t for me plz and try to get me the code? I will be verry thankfull..thank u
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
You got lucky that AT&T gave you the code without you being their customer.
I tried it in the past with Verizon and they basically told me to bug off.
The general rule is that they give out unlock codes only to their customers after a couple of months since phone release date.
No contract phones at full price already come unlocked, so that excuse rarely works.
Anyway, some people still get lucky and get the code, but the majority isn't. It all depends on generosity of the customer rep.
I unlocked all my phones through online services, and there is nothing shady in your imei being requested, since the unlock codes get generated based on imei. AT&T will ask for you're imei as well in order to get the phone unlocked.

Agreed.
As to the OP's question of "is there a hack?", I assume that there is not. Those providing codes are likely paying insiders for some private key.
To the OP, why did the person you buy the phone from not get it unlocked? If he was an ATT customer who was in Lebanon it would have been a no-brainer to do such. And it would be free. I have had no issue at all unlocking my last 3 ATT phones (via ATT) so that I could travel internationally.
Think perhaps he might not be the rightfull owner?
I really do not like the entire "locked phone" concept, but given that it exists one should know how to avoid pitfalls. Do not buy locked phones from 3rd parties unless you know what you are doing.
Yea its th first time that i buy a locked fone..i loved the atrix thats why i bought it..neway thank i guyss..

I was at AT&T. We looked up the information while in the store. If you sign the 2 year contract they will give you the unlock code after 3 months. If you pay full price and go prepaid service you have to wait 6 months before they will give you the code. I read it right from the AT&T's sales reps. tablet.

I work for AT&T, and we usually don't unlock new phones for the first 6 months a phone is out. Especially with a flagship phone.
Your best bet is to go through a 3rd party and just suck it up and pay for the unlock.
AT&T is under no obligation to give you an unlock code. They do it strictly as a courtesy.
I dont know if this helps, but when i bought my note 2 last november after it came out... i did so off contract and i ran into the same issue. AT&T reps typically seem like they get the codes 30-90 days after a product comes out and then theyll happily unlock it for you.. it seems like they aren't going to or arent able to unlock a brand new phone that just released.
Search is your friend. There are several unlock methods ive seen posted on xda.

Ran into this today, CS rep flat out told me that it was impossible to unlock the AT&T version of the Galaxy S IV.
I was giving serious thought to returning my ATT S4 and buying a TMOBILE S4 (which doesn't have a locked boot loader) and then using it on ATT. TMOBILE Is heavily promoting that they don't lock you into contracts and will unlock your phone if you leave. When I contacted TMOBILE and asked if I could buy an S4 outright and then get it unlocked so I could use it on ATT they said they could do it - but that I had to wait 60 days after buying the phone to get it unlocked. Seemed kind of heavy handed to me - if I paid full price for the phone why would they make me wait 60 days?

My question is this and as you say you work for AT&T so you might be able to give me a straight answer... If I DON'T get the phone at a contract price and pay the $639.99 why should AT&T care what I do with the phone then? I can understand them not wanting to share codes for a subsidized phone but full retail? What do they loose by not sharing the code? With the prevalence of services like cellunlocker.net they don't have the ability to keep the device on lock down.
I just don't get the big deal assuming one opts to pay full non-contract price.
