[Q] OTA updates with a rooted Desire Z - G2 and Desire Z General

Hi,
I've previously rooted my Desire Z using the guides shown here and here
I've read that the latest HTC firmware 1.72 ROM doesn't work with this root method. I'm not sure what my current HTC firmware version is, though system settings shows that the software number is 1.34.707.5.
I've just received notification of an OTA update with the following update:
Update: Improve system performance and Camera feature enhancements 43.46 MB
I'm not running any custom ROM, still using HTC Sense, just rooted it.
If I want to apply the OTA update, I assume I need to unroot and return my phone to its original state? How do I do that?
Also, a few other questions:
Will the apps that require root access cease to work once I unroot my phone?
Will I need to uninstall these apps or will they just not work?
Is there a new method of rooting the new HTC ROM?
Thanks!

you are on 1.34 (software number is 1.34.707.5) and once you are rooted and S-OFF you can re-root after moving to 1.72
That update sounds like 1.82 however, and I am not sure if that works. I am running 1.82 rooted but I flashed the whole update from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960149 (without wiping so I didn't lose any data).
Probably would recommend you do the same!

Oh, missed some questions:
You don't need to remove root to flash an update, but the update will remove your root
and if you lose root your apps that require it just won't work. Don't have to uninstall but since they don't work, well????

Thanks! I'm a ROM noob...how do I flash that update on my rooted 1.34 ROM Desire Z?

If I were you, i'd look into getting ClockworkMod installed and flash a custom ROM that has 1.8x already prerooted for you. That way, if you ever wanted to go back to your factory rom, you have the NANDroid backup from CWM!
Have fun!

OK, I have ClockworkMod installed. Do I just download the custom ROM into my sdcard and use CWM to flash it? How do I create a NANDroid backup?

flash desire z

Does anyone know if its possible to flash the desire z without rooting the phone. If possible how
What are you trying to flash? If you're trying to flash a custom ROM, the ROMs themselves are rooted. So even if it were somehow possible to flash without prior root, you would still be rooted afterwards.
I am trying to flash a stock rom that was rooted but i accedently went in to recovery and it cant be rooted anymore by using visionary(+), x4root or the rage method. So i need to flash back to stock or need a way to flash a custom rom. If you have any ideas im willing to try anything
I believe flashing the stock ROM does not require root.
Also, are you S-Off? If so, you apparently don't need to be rooted to flash a custom ROM, if you are still S-off.

unfortunatly my phone is not s-off so i need to find another way to flash or root the device. I checkecd the thread link, But i have tryed this method.
I was wondering would the OTA update to 2.3 gingerbread be enough to reset the device to standard. So i can root the device and flash custom roms?
Thanks
I got this issue solved.
I used an original HTC ruu to flash back to stock.
This worked, And i was able to root the device and i have now been able to clock the device also

Evo 4.22 Stock Recovery

Could someone please point me in the direction of where I can get the Evo 4G 4.22 stock recovery image?
Stock recovery is no recovery, what exactly are you looking for?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I am rooted and have CWM installed. I am looking to put back the stock 4.22 recovery so I may install the the 4.24 OTA update.
I like to keep my Rom stock and prefer to install updates via OTA.
If you take the 4.24 OTA you will no longer be "rooted" Look for one of the rooted ROMs and flash it
Yeah,what he said
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I am using the Unrevoked root method and no update (3.70,4.22) to date has unrooted my phone.
I have simply been restoring the current version of the stock recovery, which I have previously found on the internets, and then running the OTA update as normal. Once done I install CWM and the latest SU updates. Works great.
I would like to perfrom this method once agian to install the 4.24 update and all I need is the 4.22 stock recovery.
If you don't want to be rooted anymore, then just accept the OTA - it'll override your current recovery with the stock recovery, which is actually a lack of recovery.
But as others have said, you won't be able to root again unless you've ran unrevoked or unrevoked forever and remain s-off. In that case, you'll have to flash a recovery and then flash the rooted version. So if you want to stay rooted, you might as well go ahead and do that. You should be able to just wipe cache and dalvik and install, so the end result will be the same but you'll be rooted.
I hope that made sense...

You probably want this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133379
This is the actual update, but rooted, so you can keep your CWM recovery, get the latest update that was made OTA, but remain rooted. You don't want to just accept the OTA if prompted, your root will go away.
Once you've downloaded it (and the radio update as well), follow the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14933526&postcount=31
Thats the problem. I cannot install the OTA 4.24 update with CWM installed, nor can I install the update manually, via renaming and then update method, as it will error out during install.
OTA updates will only install if the proper stock verion of recovery in installed, hence I really need the 4.22 recovery.
Installing OTA updates when using Unrevoked does not change S-OFF, it only overwrites SU which can be easily reinstalled. I know as I rooted my evo way back when it was version 3.26 using unrevoked 3 and have installed every OTA update since using this method and still have S-OFF
Thanks, but I do not need to go that route. My method will update as normal and I wont have to wipe my phone.

And you won't be rooted anymore. There are only about 3 thousand posts telling people this, and most AFTER they found out the hard way. There are stock Rooted ROMS based on the recovery, as in STOCK! but still rooted, and up to date.
BTW, there are also a lot of posts detailing how the OTA made their phones worse, but if you want to be a hard head, go ahead and bury yourself, but don't come back crying when you figure out.
how come every other incompetent noob can manage to get their phone back to stock and permanently locked/unrooted, yet I cannot manage this feat intentionally?
if I intentionally flash the 4.22 zip from shipped-roms will this eliminate my root and recovery?
well install the 4.22 update from recovery didn't work... it aborted with some error.
ARGHHH!!! SOMEONE HELP ME LOCK MY PHONE PLEASE!!!
I appreciate the heads up, but if done correctly, it does work and has worked great for me the past few OTA updates.
I am aware of all the potential problems and am not the only one successfully installing OTA updates on a rooted evo and staying rooted.

Bottom line is if you change back to S-ON, and apply the OTA you lose root forever (or until Unrevoked finds a new backdoor). If you leave S-OFF then you can downgrade, and reload a recovery. The stock ROM's you'll find here (ex. Sprint Lover's) are stock, and rooted. They pretty much the same thing you get over the air. Don't be a lid..
I downloaded a from shipped roms the last rom for my evo and downloaded the s-on tool. Ran the tool then connected my phone to the computer and ran the RUU i donloaded. Fully stock unrooted locked phone
I am a noob
First learn the correct terminology for what you are tying to achieve. There is no 4.22 recovery that you can just flash, there is a 4.22 ROM and a 4.22 RUU.
Then check out the WIKI and FAQs these both contain the info you are looking for .
Not trying to be mean. Just do some research before you mess up your phone and come here asking for stuff that doesn't exist.
4.22 ROM = just the ROM
4.22 RUU = .exe that runs on your PC to FLASH your PHONE with new radio, recovery, hboot, rom, etc

This is what you want to do to get to the latest OTA STOCK no root

What sort of backing up do I need to do before upgrading to 2.3.4?

Still kind of a newbie here so would be great if someone could help me out or point me to a FAQ perhaps? What is recommended to be done before upgrading the OS? I currently have rooted and S-OFF stock 2.2, want to do the upgrade to 2.3.4, preferably at the store. What will be lost in the process of updating? Will I need to reinstall all my apps? Would it be best to use TitaniumBackup before doing the upgrade?
Thanks for any info!
You will loose your root, S-ON, apps and data.

If you want to keep your root, someone has made a pre-rooted ROM of the update to flash in ClockworkMod. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211143
Always use Titanium Backup to back up your apps and then use ROM Manager/Clockwork Recovery to take a backup of your current ROM incase something goes wrong. I'd suggest you not take it to T-Mobile if you want to keep your phone rooted. As the previous post said, there is a rooted copy of the Android version T-Mobile will install available.

If you want to keep your root, just head to the dev section and download a stock rooted 2.3.4 OTA release. If you have the G2 (assuming you do) the ROM can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211143 . I've successfully installed this one. Its perfectly stock, but with root.
You should follow standard procedure for moving to a new ROM, as the poster above stated.
1) backup all apps (not system data) with an app like Titanium Backup.
2) do a nandroid (ROM manager) backup of your current ROM
3) enter recovery, wipe cache/dalvik/factory data reset
4) Flash 2.3.4 pre-rooted ROM.zip
5) enter your new ROM and restore your apps.
Should be noted that this ROM does NOT include a radio or anything, its just the ROM in a .zip format. So you may want to get the appropriate radio. Although your current radio may work just fine. Radios: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809

Safe to take the update?

I never got the original ICS update OTA, after trying every troubleshooting suggestion ASUS had to offer I finally just said screw it and rooted my TF101 and installed the ROM manually from here. Now, strangely enough, I am getting the latest one OTA with the option to postpone only 3 times, I'm not concerned with losing root or anything, I just don't want to brick my tablet. Is it safe to take the update?
Do you have CWM installed?
It generally is a bad idea to install official OTA's on a rooted device. If you're running a normal Asus Rom modified to keep root you might want to just flash ARHD while you're at it
Thats what I thought, thanks for confirming that for me. What exactly is ARHD? I do have CWM installed.

Anyone have any issues trying to update with the stock ROM and recovery (not rooted either)? My wife's will download the update and reboot where it shows the android guy and the progress bar that gets to about 1/3 the way across, then get the Android guy with the Exclamation point in the triangle. Tried it twice.
Anyone else getting this?
Just so I have it straight ...
I have the same issue. I have an updated to ICS and rooted the device (no custom ROM) TF101. I have CWM installed.
I have the option to update the firmware ....
1) should I unroot and install the OTA update? Then re-root?
2) Go ahead and install regardless
3) Then I can install the ARWD?
4) some other option ????
I have looked and I haven't found a clear answer.

This is what I did with mine. It updates everything but your recovery since you have a custom one on yours. This was the easiest thing with CWM installed with the stock ICS ROM
Thanks folks! I have my answer.

T-Mobile FOG->FOJ Root

Hey guys,
I just rooted yesterday (G900T..FOG) using the TrapKernel method and everything is working just fine. Today I got a prompt for a new security update (FOJ). I haven't installed it yet and was curious -- if I do, will that remove my root? I'm assuming yes. Say I do install it -- is there anything I can do to get back my root aside from downgrading and re-applying TrapKernel?
Secondly, would I be able to flash a rooted FOJ ROM over the top of my FOG and still keep my root or will the update from J to G ? What steps would I need to do to accomplish this other than find the ROM and flash & wipe cache/davlik. Would I be able to dirty flash this or would a full wipe be required?
Last question (for now), if I choose to flash a CM ROM like Fusion would that keep my root as well? Again, I'm pretty sure the answer is yes I just don't want to make bad things happen that could be avoided.
1. if you take the OTA, root will be lost. You will have to downgrade, root, then upgrade using a prerooted rom to get it back.
2. Prerooted stock ROMs are the way to go. Just download Muniz_ri's prerooted stock OJ4 rom and flash it, you'll update to OJ4 and keep root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/development/how-to-update-to-g900tof6-5-1-1-pc-t3141404
Straight from that page:
- No need to wipe, the ROM will perform a factory data reset during the flash. Backup your User Data prior to flashing.
Click to collapse
The ROM will wipe itself, you'll need to back up your stuff before the update.
3. The vast majority of custom ROMs are prerooted. Cyanogen based ones require you to enable root in the developer settings, FYI
