Hi all, I'll make this quick:
I want to use the Atrix on Rogers in Canada. Amazon.com sells the phone (without service) for $599. Assuming I have an unlock code can I just buy the phone via Amazon.com and pop my Rogers SIM card in it?
http://wireless.amazon.com/dp/B004KZP4BQ (Select "Phone Only, No Service")
I've heard that Amazon.com will still require you to have an AT&T account to do this?
Edit: After some experimentation, it looks like I can't use a Canadian address as a billing address, effectively blocking me from purchasing the phone...
Thanks!

I bought unlocked att atrix on ebay and had it sent to US address. Picked it up on a trip and put my rogers sim in and it works great. I can even tether. Just need to figure out how to turn it into a hotspot .

i wanted to buy the dell streak today nline. I am from chile and wanted to order it from dell.com. it ask for a USA shipping address which i don´t have, i entered my mothers address from tennessee and tried paying with paypal and again i couldn´t because the paypal account is from chile. How can i Buyt the phone?!
I am no looking at dell streaks in ebay but i´m not sure if they will be ok.
What should i do?
I was in the same predicament. I live in Canada and didn't have a credit card with an american address, so I went the Ebay route. I was trying to avoid it at all costs but it worked out in the end, and I'm enjoying my Streak.
good to hear that, i just ordered one from ebay also, it said its unopened, sealed box. Although it´s not unlocked, i´ll try to get the unlock code from at&t and if that doesn´t work i´ll get a rebel sim
was gunna say i bet you could pay somebody else to order it for you and ship it to Tennessee but i see youve already ordered one...
I'm about to order one online too, I'm in the US so dell.com is ok, especially since they have a "Get a $100 gift card with the purchase of a Streak" (you can't use it right away though so it's not very convenient for the car/home dock)...
What I don't like is the "For use on AT&T network only" - makes no sense they should sell a locked version with no plan for $549.99! Has anyone bought one like that and they got an unlock code from AT&T ?
the one i got from ebay was locked to at&t aslo, as soon as i got it i called at&t and told them i had a dell dtreak and needed the unlock code, the rep asked for my imei and 30 seconds laer gave my unlock code. the whole call didn´t last more than 5 minutes.
That's nice, are you an AT&T customer? Someone said you had to have an account with them "in good standing".
If anyone knows about the restocking fees from Dell on a Streak I'd be interested, in case I order it and don't like it ;-)
no, im not an AT6T customer. I live in Chile and told them that also when i called.
Just checked out the GT in a local store. Cute hardware. But they wouldn't sell it to me without passport and social security number. So much for picking up a U.S. tab while on holidays...
Were you trying to buy it at the off contract price? Were you paying cash?
I definitely wanted the "off-contract" GT. I would have been happy to pay cash, but we didn't get that far...
PS: On the t-mobile web page you need to pick an "even more" or "even more plus" plan to order.
Are you visiting friends in the States? If so, have them buy it for you. Or try a different T-mobile corporate store.
They can sell it to you without any credit check just like any item in the store if you are paying up front. Maybe they were just trying to make more money and/or save it for somebody who was going to sign up for service. Sad but it happens.
I just brought mine
I just brought one from tmobile store (no contract), and didn't ask for any credit check
I called up the other stores in town and they do require you to get at least one month of service with it. Which then entails a credit check, even if its only month-to-month. I guess ahbvrh was just lucky and ran into a CSR who wasn't aware of these rules. Yay!
you can simply buy a prepaid data plan (10$) and that will save you the credit check.
Im still loooking for the tmobile sim unlock code so I can use my existing corporate sim card which is AT&T

I am a current T-mobile prepaid user. I tried buying the tab with and without telling them my t-mobile number, but no luck...

Are you saying that the 599.- "off-contract" GT is sim-locked to t-mobile US?? That would be insane...
That's no policy of Tmobile but maybe something they are doing in that region or those particular stores. There is no policy that says you have to buy a month of service for any device on tmobile now that they have the prepaid webconnect plans too. Even before that though you never needed to sign up for service to just buy a device its just expensive.
Yes,it locked for tmobile, but im sure it is possible to find unlock code somewhete
If you pay full invoice price its still sim locked but you are allowed to request the sim unlock code from tmobile. Just one catch you gotta have an account with tmobile to process that request.
That good to know,I just faxed them my recipt ,I will see if they will send me the unlock .....
Good luck! The t-mo web page say: http://support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm51885.xml
For customers with a T-Mobile Postpaid Plan, T-Mobile will provide the SIM Unlock Code upon request to eligible customers, provided the requesting customer has a minimum of 40 days of active service with T-Mobile.
To me, that sounds like you have to wait >1 month... Yay!
it seem this is only for postpaid users....,I just bought prepaid data plan....
I'm sure there is a way to unlock using root or something

Oh yeah good point, you are the lucky one that got one on prepaid. Though in that case its even worse, and the same page says:
For customers with a T-Mobile Prepaid Plan, T-Mobile will provide the SIM Unlock Code upon request to eligible customers, provided the requesting customer has a minimum of 60 days of active service with T-Mobile and either a Prepaid Plan account balance of at least $10.00 or a prior refill within the last 30 days.
However, a quick google search brings up various pages that send you an unlock code for $$$...
I dont mind paying few extra bucks for gettong the unlock code.
googling it up show only one site that promise unlock code for the galaxy tab,but it is for the sprint vetsion, and I'm not sure it will work on the tmobile one...
Confused! I thought CDMA devices were never locked and if you wanted to change carrier (eg Sprint to Verizon) you just needed to get the new carrier to register the devices ESN on their network (which is often easier said than done!).

Dave
Tmobile is GSM

I know. I was referring to the previous poster who mentioned unlock codes for sprint, which CDMA.

Well I went at a best buy to see a demo model but they didn't have one so I asked questions and asked if there was a difference and the person said no.If you buy with a contract, they give you an unlocked one for $200 but without one they will sell it for $529.. This worries me as if they have an imei code or whatever you won't be able to use the 5.99 or $10 internet plan where tmobile will block it.. Is this true and do you think tmobile will block the cheaper "dumb phone" data plan? Thanks!!

There is no difference in phones they are the same SKU but there are numerous threads about the T-zones plan, some say it works still some say it doesnt
do a quick search or check a couple pages back
I belive they're the same device. They're all unlocked. I don't remember which one, but Samsung, T-Mo or Google tweeted that the other day.
When I bought mine, without contract, it came out of the same stack of phones as the one the guy next to me who was on contract got his from.

The locked and unlocked phones are exactly the same. There is absolutely no difference between them. Dont listen to anyone who works for best buy.
If T-Mobile chooses to block Nexus S IMEIs from the t-zones or web2go data plans they will. Your contract would not prevent that.
The word is subsidized by the way.
In my case I bought an unlocked one in Bestbuy for $529.00 without a Plan. I have sim card from another carrier. When I installed it works for making calls but not Internet Data acces is available. I configure the APN and still doesn't work.
I did a test with a Rebelsimcard and then it works but just for a while and then it stops, it gets unregistered from the network. I removed the Rebelsimcard and it register but only for making calls. then if I wait a few minutes and then put again the rebelsimcard it start to works perfectly for while but it happens again.
Any ideas on what the problem it could be? How can I fix this permanetly?
Hi,
I was thinking of having my uncle buy me an unlocked Samsung Focus in USA and bringing it to me in Norway.
I've noticed many people having problems getting the Focus without a contract, but it looks to me that you can buy one from AmazonWireless without one if you click "Phone only (no service)"? Or am I wrong?
Any other things that I should be aware of before buying the phone?

well, i bought mine there, but your billing address must be on US (i just put the shipping address on the billing address, the only legit data was my CC and expiration date)
it worked, but i shipped it to an US address. i dont have confirmation from my friend yet, but i got charged and the package tracking says its delivered.
i hope it helps
Great, thanks for the answer.
My uncle lives in Seattle, so I can probably just use his adress.
My plan was to get the phone shipped to him so I would bypass all the stupid taxes and fees you need to pay to import stuff to norway
So basicly, I just need my uncle's adress, and I'm good to go?
Anything else I should worry about?
The contract-free phone is locked to AT&T so you still need to get it unlocked.

Alright. Is this a simple process?
I've ordered an unlocked one from eBay instead. Was about 100USD more expensive, but that only brings it to around 150USD LESS than what I'd have to expect to pay for a similar phone in Norway
ill buy the unlock on ebay, but i need my phone imei first.
Bought mine online from amazon. Shipped it someone in US who was on holiday their at their relative's house. They brought it over to NZ when they finished their holiday in US.
Gave the IMEI no of the locked focus to nckzone on ebay and he gave me an unlock code. Working fine.
btw used a visa debit card on amazon which does not cares about the billing address crap.
Hey...have mine shipping Friday.
I intend on doing what I did with my SGS2 on ATT and that is get it set up on prepaid $50mo unlimited. They sent me my sim card without getting my imei# last time.
Not so now ....they've become adamant about this now.
I'm going to use my imei from the Note...but just tell them its an old unlocked Raze or something .Since its GSM....they can't tell I think.
Does anyone know if there's anything/code in these #'s that indicates whether or not its a smartphone or not. (Smartphones not allowed on these plans).
Thanks
As you are aware ATT doesn't sell international galaxy Note's so when they see the Notes IMEI register on their network OLAM will not know what device it is when it cross references its device list.
This is why you can have the $10 medianet unlimited plan when you use an unlocked, unbranded phone that AT&T doesn't offer. It will work exactly the same way as unbranded Nokias and the gt-19000.
but where do you get the sim card from? they send it to you?
Buy the cheapest phone they offer. When they ship the phone to you simply use that SIM card in your unlocked unbranded device.

Also other idea:I buy two SGSII for 200.00US and sell on ebay for 450.00 for downpayment for the Note
Good stuff guys!!
I am on T-Mobile right now and I am thinking of
1. Removing my unlimited data plan from TMo
2. Go to their lowest monthly plan just for the calls ( i wud not want to totally get rid of TMo for now)
3. Get a new AT&T plans, with a descent phone
4. Sell the phone eBay/Craigslist
5. Fwd calls from my Tmo # to AT&T
6. Use Note with AT&T
Just waiting for Note to launch in more European countries which MIGHT bring down a price little more (I hope)
Thank you.

You already owe me 150 $.

So i can just get one of those Gophones for like $20 and simply switch over the sim card to the Note?? It's as simple as that and i don't need to do anything else? Also if i do this, will i be able to port my existing verizon number over to at&t?
If I'm already on AT&T using a Nexus One, can I shift my existing number to prepaid if I get some crap phone?
