[Q] A little help needed - Nexus S General

you'll have to forgive if this is posted elsewhere but i haven't found it if it is, I'm new to this scene as i used to be used to the old apple stuff where i was quite happy jailbreaking etc. but now i have a nexus s and i'm quite happy with it and i've updated it to 2.3.3 no problems,
but now i'm a little confused/unsure. I am happy with the stock firmware but i'd like diffrent themes having looked around i see that to install them i need to install the CM7 rom but I've seen various roms some that need rooting and some that seem not to.
I've also seen a 2.3.3 rom thats a stock deodexed rom and a deodexed-voodoo-root rom. But whats the diffrence and which do i need etc.
sorry to sound like a complete idiot but this is all new to me and i'm trying to learn and get the best out of my phone, all advice is welcome

First off, all 3rd party ROMs will require root to "flash" (the android term for installing). You'll find a lot of information about all the ROMs, themes and kernels currently available for the NS here but the short answer to your question is that a deodexed rom is one which can be themed. If it has Voodoo, Netarchy, Trinity, or Honity listed what is being referred to is a custom kernel.
I'm also assuming you're not currently rooted and on that previous link you'll find a list of almost all of the rooting methods currently available (save for SuperBoot...I think I omitted that one by accident). Basically, all of the info you need is on that thread and if you have other questions I'm happy to help you but for now I think I've answered most everything.

Hello Mate,
For improved battery life, fast and stable ROM, I recommend you use Doc's Rom, you will get all of this, and no messing with your phone.
You can get Doc's ROM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
Note that you will find a Slim version and "normal" version, slim has been trimmed every app that is not absolutely indispensable, since you are new to custom ROMs, it is best to get the normal version.
And here you can find a nice tutorial on how to make a clean installation, I suggest you follow this guide when flashing any custom ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9728021&postcount=14527
This guide shows you how to instal Doc's Rom v4 based on JPU, the most recent version so far is v6.2 based on JPY, the installation process for both is the same anyways, you only need to follow the complete guide the first time you get a custom ROM, after this it is much easier to change ROMS
Good Luck!
Please ask any questions if you have doubts, we all here will be pleased to help you out.
There is no best ROM, it is up to you to find the ROM that you want.
You can use the latest stock ROMs or Custom Roms which are really just repackaged/optimized/improved/faster stock ROMs (Doc is most popular for these reasons).
These discussions are not beneficial to anyone at XDA. If you are too lazy to flash and find what you like, then you don't belong at XDA.
I'm afraid that "which ROM is best?" threads always end in disaster here at XDA, and there's no answers to be found here that can't be had by taking some time and doing some personal research on all the options that exist...the benefits and faults of each are already well-documented.

welcome to the NIGHTMARE
you should look at S. U. R. F. A. C. E Rom thread. the Rom is very nice and he has very good tutorials for beginners!

Well, first of all, the latest roms are not always the best ones. Since gingerbread 2.3.4, we've had in sequence: JVQ, JVR, JVS, JVT and now JVX, JVW and JVZ.
However, many still consider JVR to be smoother and more stable than the newer ones. Then, there is also the wifi problem on JVS and above.
Similarly, there is the infamous phone.apk force close problem on all these roms, which was not present on gingerbread 2.3.3.
But gingerbread 2.3.3 had serious battery drain issues, which weren't present on Froyo roms.
So, here's what you need to know as a beginner:
-The latest roms and custom roms give you the advantage of theming, modding and tweaking, all of which are very fun and exciting. Seriously. I used to flash my galaxy s multiple times a day.
-But the smoothest, lag free roms are the Froyo 2.2.1 roms. Stick with those if you want stability and speed. After all, gingerbread doesn't have any important extra functionalities. But, froyo roms lack support for latest tweaks and themes.
So, if you're happy with your current rom, there is no actual need to change it.
But, if you are really keen on trying other roms before settling down, you need to be able to flash roms. To do that, you'll need to:
1) Install Samsung Kies to get the samsung usb drivers
2) Download odin 1.3 or above
3) Download the rom of your choice and follow their flashing instructions
4) To be safe, download a froyo stock rom and a gingerbread stock rom with bootloaders just in case you need to revert to stock
5) To be even safer, perform the unbrickable mod on your phone first, though the SGS is pretty hard to hard brick anyway.
thanxxxxxx

[Q] Yet Another LPY Thread

Guys, I've got a question.
I live in Germany and I've just installed the official ICS version over the air (4.0.3, LPY kernel). I have always been on stock roms before and have zero experiences in flashing custom roms whatsoever, but I have never been really content with some things about TouchWiz, so I decided to change to custom roms if Samsung's ICS does not suit my taste as well, which is the case.
Because of that and because of the issues with LPY, I decided I want to go back to gingerbread and go to Cyanogenmod9 or something else (do not really now anything about those, will just have to try them all out).
Since my English is not too great, and since I felt noone straight out answered this question, I want to make sure that I got this right.
First, wiping is not safe on LPY. Recovery mode is not either. Also, this so-called 'CWM' is dangerous as well.
1) From how I understood things, for flashing to other, custom roms, one uses either CWM or Odin. Is this correct?
2) CWM should not be used with LPY, while Odin seems to have no issues with LPY (at least none we know of), is this true?
3) Therefore, I could use Odin without issues, right? I know that noone can guarantee that nothing will happen, but I want to take the safest option.
4) It seems there are two versions of Odion, one for your device and one for your computer. Which one should I use?
5) How exactly do I flash roms with Odin anyway? I find it a bit hard to cope with the xda-forums, every thread name seems so bloated to me, making it really hard for me to find what I am looking for, so I could not really find a guide for that up until now.
Thanks in advance.
Hey mate, welcome to this board!
Since you´ve said that english isn´t your strength, my advice would be to check android-hilfe.de or pocket-pc.ch, where all theses topics have been discussed and explained in german as well! And as gorgeous as XDA is: the mentioned boards are very kind and very helpful as well!
Don't worry. I have problems expressing myself, but I have no problems understanding English text. I feel like there are more people here who can help me out. They are barely talking about the kernel issue on the German forums.

[Q] ROM Help

Hi guys, I have been looking in the Android development part of the forum for a week now and I need help in finding the ROM suitable for me. I have flashed about eight roms in the past week and i can't find the 'one'
I need your help
I'm looking for a ROM that looks like a nexus device (UI), I have tried the Google Edition but it was too laggy, but I want to be able to customise the device fully with pre-built settings like CyanogenMod or ProBAM. For example, I don't like the stock messaging app on the Google Edition ROMS, I actually prefer the TW layout, and so it would be nice to customise that. I also want a ROM that doesn't take up too much storage, so I am future proofed, and finally I want a ROM that has good battery life.
I like the look of CyanogenMod but there aren't any stable releases and there are only nighty builds, which I'm apprehensive about, because my phone is my daily driver. I'm also confused about people saying get CyanogenMod 10.2 instead of 10.1, but when I go to the Wiki page, there is no mention of 10.1 or 10.2...?
it would be great if someone could help me

[Q] L7 - Stock Jelly Bean Root / Stable Rom Recommendations

EDIT: Used Framaroot (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276) and it seems to have worked fine. Think I am also happy with this stock rom. Sorry for making this post without taking enough time first.
Hi,
Just got an L7 (P700) today and been looking around at Roms but nothing really grabbed me. Installed CWM but then decided to just update to JB using the LG Support Tool.
Firstly I can't seem to find any details on rooting the JB update. Is it just the same "What you desire!" tool or can I not find it for a reason?
Secondly, I can't really find any decent recommendations for roms because the people asking are normally incomprehensible. I would like a rom that is going to be stable with everything working and will not need updating. Ideally it would be CM but any JB rom that is stable I would be interested in. Most of them seem to be in quite heavy development with frequent updates and I would feel I was missing out by not getting them.
Sorry for wasting peoples time with these simple questions and thanks for any responses.
