Here's a link to the AT&T Inspire forum with the APN settings that allows the Inspire to tether using a basic data plan.

I don't know about changing the apn but you can flash CM6 or CM7, those have wifi tethering built into them. It works fantastic and I use it multiple times a week. There are apps on the android market that will do it, but the built in apps with CM6/7 are the best.

The OP has installed the AT&T Froyo update and therefore he is stuck and cannot root his Aria, thus the reason for his post and question.

being that 2.2 is unrootable, is that a permanent issue or is that something that someone is working to break thorugh?

This is a issue with several of the HTC devices, not just the Aria, so there are groups that are looking for a break through.

Thanks to the developer Harald.Mue for his hard work - donate if you like
You do need root for this to work

looks like only changes are multilingual support and desire compatibility enhancements
still best app there is
yeah small updates, i think i'll keep my current version since its not broken.
Hopefully they make a version to support Froyo. I know it's kinda redundent but I like the interface of wireless tether, and the fact that I can use internet on the phone while i'm tethered, on froyo it locks the phone out of using internet when wifi tether is on.
i still can't get the old wifi tether app to work with my evo. maybe i can get this new version to work
Im with u on this..

I am using this new wifi tether and surfing the net on the phone at the same time, dont seem to be having any problem with it. I am running Decks FROYO rom FROM ppcGEEKS.COM.
anyway to make this work if u dont have root? topic creator stated it wasnt necessary however when i installed and ran the program, it said i didnt have the required kernels and that i didnt have root.
oops nevermind.. i read the "do" as "dont" slow morning and havent had my coffee yet

Free wifi without root

Hey guys is this possible without having your droid x rooted?
I am running 2.2 now and I am not rooted.
What are the options? Thanks
What do you mean "free wifi"? You mean wireless tether?

Try PDAnet (in the market)? I know it allows free tether but you cannot get to HTTPS sites...so you wouldn't be able to check your banking or e-mail...but it may give you a limited solution.
Why not just root though and get this without the hassle?
Yeah I'd just root and get wireless tether app. No harm in rooting and it's simple. Never tried what he suggested above but no harm in trying right? good luck
3G Mobile Hotspot - the app that comes with 2.2 build by default, seems to work fine and free. Tested it successfully. I should mention that I'm rooted, but it never asked for superuser, so should work un-rooted as well.

You're quite welcome. But im not sure about 2.2 root. I haven't really tried froyo yet or kept up with the thread. Last i heard they were working on a root

Yep, that's my understanding. I'm not sure if it was the same app on 2.1, but it would ask me to subscribe to Verizon paid service when I'd try launching it before. So I just deleted it.
This version works just fine right out of the box, I don't pay for their tethering service.
I think I'd be more positive about this once you get your bill.

The 3G Mobile Hotspot isnt free, when you connect, and load a page it ask you to call customer service for the service...
Weird, sorry for misinformation then. I didn't get any prompts at all. It just started working. I'll have to check my bill then.
I just tried it another day again out of curiosity and thought I'd clarify after my previous confusion. It might help someone...
What happened was that I connected just fine using Verizon default app (hence my previous comments), but when I tried going online in the browser, it brought up a webpage offering to sign up for their tethering service.

This was done on the incredible. What you have to do is chance the dun within the programming settings of the phone.
Haven't figured how to access these settings on the droid x though.

[Q] Wifi Tethering in EB13 Froyo

I thought that one of the benefits of Froyo was that we'd have Wifi tethering, but it doesn't seem to be an option.
My question is; How do I enable Wifi tethering? Do I need to root and install Barnacle, or is there another non-rooting way?
If I need to root, is there a new one click root that I should use?

One click root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
Then download from here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I downloaded the wireless_tether_2_0_7-pre1.apk version.
Tested it last night and it works.
One click took a few tries but now I have it installed
After a few tries I was finally able to root.
I installed the Wireless Tether, but I can't see my phone after starting tethering.
Is there a special way to set it up? Shouldn't it just show up in available networks?

I didn't do anything special. Mine just popped up in the available networks..
Take a look at the log and see if there were any errors.
After rooting, the wireless tethering app in the market worked great for me. I wish there was a way to do wired tether without having to use pdanet or easy tether, but oh well.

You do realize this is a service you have to pay for, right? The functionality was there from jump...you just had to pay to enable it. Nowhere was it said you'd be getting this for free....
But as others have directed...rooting your device then installing Wireless Tether is your way around this.

Why wouldn't it work with the tablet? Is it because it's in ad-hoc mode?
Is there another way to accomplish tethering with the galaxy tab?

I think the guy thought you were trying to produce the WiFi signal from your tab, not have your phone produce the signal and have your tab receive it.
I suspect it's because the tether app you have only works in adhoc mode, and not infrastructure mode. There's a thread in the Themes and Apps forum where someone got infrastructure mode working, install that version.

I suspect the tab doesn't support adhoc wifi. Go to the android tether sight
and download the latest 3.0-pre version. As of right now its up to pre10. The 3.0 versions support infrastructure mode. And so far it works well on my epic with EB13.

That could be.
Issue was ad-hoc. The latest (experimental) version has infrastructure mode (I think it turned on Sprint's Hotspot - hopefully I won't get charged).

There's always the option of running a rom that has it preinstalled, such as CommunityRom, which has a hacked default hotspot, or CM7/MIUI, which have their own.
What OS are you on for your PC?

+1 on the WIFI Tether for Root Users as it supports infastructure mode instead of just adhoc.

Running Win7. Was finally able to connect after flashing a fresh CM7 nightly and using built in tethering. Though it took a few minutes to actually get internet access. I would prefer to use wifi tether, but just can't connect to it in infrastructure, only ad-hoc, even after I snagged an AP module from EVO system dump. It seems infrastructure mode on DInc is really hit or miss.

Have you tried PdaNET. That is what I use. It works great for me. I just used it on my trip I just took.

help with wifes epic!

What I am looking for is stock rooted gigerbread rom that has working wifi tethering. my wife's phone hasn't been updated because I rooted her phone and she uses barnacle for free tethering. i read that barnacle doesn't work on gingerbread. also Would be sweet if I could odin it. Have tried in the past to put custom roms on wifes epic and have had varied degrees of success. I have an evo running synergy so i am familiar with rooting and changing roms there but seems to be easier with odin on epic. Thanks for all of your help.
CleanGB BML or Legendary would work great for you. They both can be found in Development subforum. Read through the threads for each to see which one you like better.

I've tried a bunch of different ones out and am in the same situation as you... it was rooted for the sole purpose of free tethering (and to remove the samsung bloatware).
The new cleanGB rom is the best i've used, not the fastest but everything works and has been perfectly stable. for tethering i use open garden wifi - this is no longer listed on my market but if you do a google search for it, you can install it directly from their website for free. that's the best/easiest/most stable tether program i've used.

Cleangb has wifi hotspot built in, and I thought it does usb tethering as well. No 3rd party app needed. Anytime an app is pulled from the market, you really have to wonder why, and be cautious DLing directly from their website.

wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions going to try clean gb.
+1 on the CLeanGB BML. I've had an issue or too fiddling with undervolting but other than that, it just works and looks nearly stock. I'm not a big tetherer but I seem to recall doing a USB tether a while back and Wireless Hotspot hack is built-in. It also included a few other "nice" hacks that I like. Alternatively, as was mentioned, the android wi-fi tether app worked well when I did use it.

The wireless hack works great, its been built into my roms for some time now. But occasionally I still have to use alternate tether apps, as things like my TouchPad can't see Sprint Hotspot for some dumb reason.
