I thought that one of the benefits of Froyo was that we'd have Wifi tethering, but it doesn't seem to be an option.
My question is; How do I enable Wifi tethering? Do I need to root and install Barnacle, or is there another non-rooting way?
If I need to root, is there a new one click root that I should use?

One click root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
Then download from here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I downloaded the wireless_tether_2_0_7-pre1.apk version.
Tested it last night and it works.
One click took a few tries but now I have it installed
After a few tries I was finally able to root.
I installed the Wireless Tether, but I can't see my phone after starting tethering.
Is there a special way to set it up? Shouldn't it just show up in available networks?

I didn't do anything special. Mine just popped up in the available networks..
Take a look at the log and see if there were any errors.
After rooting, the wireless tethering app in the market worked great for me. I wish there was a way to do wired tether without having to use pdanet or easy tether, but oh well.

You do realize this is a service you have to pay for, right? The functionality was there from jump...you just had to pay to enable it. Nowhere was it said you'd be getting this for free....
But as others have directed...rooting your device then installing Wireless Tether is your way around this.

Why wouldn't it work with the tablet? Is it because it's in ad-hoc mode?
Is there another way to accomplish tethering with the galaxy tab?

I think the guy thought you were trying to produce the WiFi signal from your tab, not have your phone produce the signal and have your tab receive it.
I suspect it's because the tether app you have only works in adhoc mode, and not infrastructure mode. There's a thread in the Themes and Apps forum where someone got infrastructure mode working, install that version.

I suspect the tab doesn't support adhoc wifi. Go to the android tether sight
and download the latest 3.0-pre version. As of right now its up to pre10. The 3.0 versions support infrastructure mode. And so far it works well on my epic with EB13.

Issue was ad-hoc. The latest (experimental) version has infrastructure mode (I think it turned on Sprint's Hotspot - hopefully I won't get charged).

Try PDAnet (in the market)? I know it allows free tether but you cannot get to HTTPS sites...so you wouldn't be able to check your banking or e-mail...but it may give you a limited solution.
Why not just root though and get this without the hassle?
Yeah I'd just root and get wireless tether app. No harm in rooting and it's simple. Never tried what he suggested above but no harm in trying right? good luck
3G Mobile Hotspot - the app that comes with 2.2 build by default, seems to work fine and free. Tested it successfully. I should mention that I'm rooted, but it never asked for superuser, so should work un-rooted as well.

Yep, that's my understanding. I'm not sure if it was the same app on 2.1, but it would ask me to subscribe to Verizon paid service when I'd try launching it before. So I just deleted it.
This version works just fine right out of the box, I don't pay for their tethering service.
I think I'd be more positive about this once you get your bill.

The 3G Mobile Hotspot isnt free, when you connect, and load a page it ask you to call customer service for the service...
Weird, sorry for misinformation then. I didn't get any prompts at all. It just started working. I'll have to check my bill then.
I just tried it another day again out of curiosity and thought I'd clarify after my previous confusion. It might help someone...
What happened was that I connected just fine using Verizon default app (hence my previous comments), but when I tried going online in the browser, it brought up a webpage offering to sign up for their tethering service.

It's best to learn yourself, because that way you know what happens to your phone.
I no longer root other people's phone or mod it in any way. There is always that .00001% chance the phone would brick. I would feel horrible if I broke somebody's phone.
Not to be mean either but people come back to me for "Tech support" Blaming me that there phone isn't working properly because I "Rooted it" for them.
Also.. it's really easy to do. I mean all you have to do is:
-Get samsung drivers
-Put phone in USB Diagnostic Mode
-Run the Noobnl one click root.
Your done.
Like Pjames said.. Believe in yourself and have confidence.
Bomix is right. And its SUPER easy. If you have windows 7 you might have a smig harder time. I had to run the program 7 times to get it to finally connect and do it. But that just required double clicking it to try again. Also restaring the phone and then running the program when you see the sprint logo worked for me. But anyways, you really can't get easier than this, when I had to root my nexus one it took me forever with all the software, and dos cmd commands.

Yes, but a much, much better solution is here. Infrastructure mode, and nicely integrated into the Wireless & Networks section of the Settings app. I've installed and tested it on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a champ.

So once rooted, you don't need a special setting/program to tether, you can just use tethering programs and assume it is free?
In WM there's always the settings/program that I was paranoid about having wrong.
No... you don't use the Sprint hotspot app. This mod integrates a wireless Access Point feature/capability directly into the phone.
After installation, a new item appears in menu->settings->Wireless & networks -- "Mobile AP".
Select it, and turn it on with the checkbox. Wait while it configures everything in about a minute, then look for it with any wireless device and connect same as any AP. The device will now have internet access via your Epic.
This solution beats any other simply on account of the Infrastruture Mode implementation; however, the tight integration directly into the Android system beats the app approach too, for my tastes.
The SSID, DHCP server address range, and other wifi router/AP parameters are configurable.

just keep in mind this mod only works on stock/odexed ROMs, which if all you are doing is rooting, you have. if that is too much then you can get wifi tether but i think the market version still doesnt work on the Epic (correct me if thats changed).
the working version is here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but you have to go to settings > applications > check unknown sources to install a file downloaded from non-market source.

As others have stated, you really should do it yourself and learn. Unless of course you dont ever plan on getting another phone that you plan to root. Most of the guides on XDA offer wasy instructions and have (some) members that will be patient and offer you assistance if you need it.
It really isnt that difficult with the guides and instructions some have posted. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067. My 12 year old nephew followed that post, and with minimal questions rooted his phone on his own without any issues.

MobileAP is notorious for having issues unless it is perfectly integrated into the ROM. Try using Wireless Tether, it is available for free just do a search for it on here. IMO it works much better than Sprint Hotspot, and there is no need to pay for it. If you still have problems (I can never get neither MobileAP nor Wireless Tether working properly on my phone), try using a wired tether app such as PdaNet or Wired Tether. These require the usb cable to be plugged in, but there are far fewer compatiblity issues. Hope this helps!

Nope, it is a free solution to tether your existing 3G or 4G data connection wirelessly. You just need to have it baked into whichever ROM you are using, as it is not a standalone .apk.

I'm not sure about speed, wired tether would surely be the fastest as there is no loss of speed from wireless data transfer. PdaNet is very slow IMO, I don't use it anymore due to this. MobileAP shouldn't be too much faster than WifiTether, as they are both using essentially the same protocol to do the same thing, just different ways of going about it. Keep following the ViperROM thread, I'm sure BT will get a fully functional MobileAP mod working shortly
yeah the sprint hotspot is a sprint app (obviously, lol) that you will have to pay for to use. the MobileAP in the vipeROM is in Settings > Wireless > Mobile AP. Its not going to be any faster than wireless tether, the benefit is that the above are both infrastructure mode while wireless tether is ad hoc. some devices cannot connect to ad hoc connections.
i tested the vipeROM mobile AP and my lappy could connect successfully and cant connect to ad hoc. it looks like he swiped it from the captivate since there was att related text in it, lol. but it works, data worked, i jsut got messages every few seconds about not being able to register me or something like that, but it continued to work, lol. hope this helps

Is you Charge rooted? My guess is probably, but Android does not support ad-hoc networks, so you have to change the wpa_supplicant file to have it be able to work becuase wireless tether broadcasts ad-hoc.

Running Win7. Was finally able to connect after flashing a fresh CM7 nightly and using built in tethering. Though it took a few minutes to actually get internet access. I would prefer to use wifi tether, but just can't connect to it in infrastructure, only ad-hoc, even after I snagged an AP module from EVO system dump. It seems infrastructure mode on DInc is really hit or miss.
