Yesterday I asked official Polish support about dual touch (not multitouch!) on X8.
Original Polish version (Just in case. I've seen many Poles on xda):
"Witam. Zauważyłem, iż telefon Xperia X10 wspiera dual touch od czasu ostatniej aktualizacji. Moje pytanie jest następujące: czy Xperia X8 w przyszłości będzie także obsługiwała dual-touch na Androidzie 2.1?
Pytam o Androida 2.1, gdyż wiem, z oficjalnych źródeł o braku planów odnośnie aktualizacji do wersji 2.2."
Z poważaniem
Roman xxx
And got this answer today (in Polish again):
Szanowny Panie,
W odpowiedzi na Pańskie zapytanie pragniemy Pana poinformować, iż dual touch będzie działał na platformie 2.1.
Zgodnie z poprzednio udzieloną informacją Sony Ericsson obecnie nie planuje aktualizacji do wyższych wersji.
Z poważaniem,

Once again, "There will be official dualtouch update for X8", but when? People (including me) are impatient Geohot will be faster to crack bootloader than SEMC to make official dualtouch for our phones...

SE isn't going to upgrade X8 and even X10 series to 2.2. They want to develope other Xperia series - Arc, Pro, Play for example cause these phone's are going to have Android 2.3 as stock.
2.2 not for X8 and X10 - it makes me angry cause even the much weaker phone - Samsung Galaxy 3 (i5800) got its 2.2 today (for now it's only in Italy) but X8 is much more powerful phone than this sh*t so...

I hope he will do this soon! Can't wait for DT (even for games - Pew Pew is sooooooo beautiful but it's impossible to play it without DT...)
I hope it!
You know, I'm going to contact SE again. Last time, they told me that 2.2 is a possibility. At least, that if I call back in the middle of the year in regards to Froyo, they'll update me. So, it's a doozey right now.
That was a fake... there won't be multitouch ypdate -.-

there's always so much misinformation when it comes to contact SE about phone upgrades, i wonder, if it's caused by incompetent support guys, or the HQ changing its mind all the time.
anyway, thanks for sharing it, romciu
Maybe it will be like this - someone will finally crack the bootloader and SE will think "sh*t, so many things we wouldn't like to share with... let's give them 2.2/2.3 to lock it again...". I think x10 users got their 2.3 after SE noticed that Zdzihu cracked their bootloader and put his own kernel (still 2.6.29 but with Zdzihu's adnotation).
We'll see

Yeah, you might want to give these phones a miss. Sony will just constantly disappoint you. They should of stayed well away from Android. Android is meant to be an open platform, but they are doing all the wrong things with it.
I can understand if they say that x8 will not receive Gingerbread update due to hardware limitations. But for Froyo, x8's hardward can support it! I hope SE will change their mind.. :/
I can imagine that is based on costs. Since the majority of people that buy new phones today, as they have done with computers for decades, is that they never update their software. Since, for Sony Ericsson there is nothing to gain to update to a newer version of Android.
On the other, they could however remove the encryption on the boot loader, so people like us can deploy whichever version we want of Android.
that's true I emailed the support for se and they replied that there will be no froyo update for the x10, x8 and x10 mini, the only update they will be doing is multitouch in the 1st quarter of 2011. so i guess we're stuck with the 2.1 software and rooting will be the least possible solution we can do
Shame for lazy Sony Ericsson developer guy, Samsung Galaxy Europe I5500 which has same CPU like X8 gets Froyo update, what reason for X8 can't get Froyo?

For XperiaTM X10 mini, mini pro and X8 there are as communicated earlier no plans to update beyond the current Éclair version. There are two mains reasons for this: The XperiaTM X10 mini, X10 mini pro and X8 all have less RAM memory than XperiaTM X10. By this we can’t guarantee a good user experience by upgrading beyond Android 2.1. The upgrade of XperiaTM X10 also was made possible due to that we had a code base that mostly could be reused. For the mini’s, who have a different user interface, this possibility did not exist.

Hey guys,
I just checked my girlfriend's X8 has this latest software update available (start of July 2011). I think it's now the 3rd update or so, the first being Android 2.1, the second something with Nike-Chip and the ability to cut videos and an office suite.
But somehow I can't find details on what this current 3rd update does (though it's a pretty popular phone?)
Has anybody checked it out already? SE's Backup-And-Restore-App always screws up the contacts and calendar entries, so I would like to know if it's worth the pain.
Edit: Oh and it's a branding-and-simlock-free X8 from Amazon ;-)
SE is full of bull****! They won't update our devices to Android 2.2 because they don't want! I'm using the Froyobread rom and i have 94MB of ram free. If they don't know how to work on their own phones, simply deliver the development to jerpelea, racht, doixanh or anyone able enough!

I guess SE will give us some little software updates with bugfixes and maybe new features.
I doubt they'll be bringing it to the X10... It brings a lot of new features. Every time they update the X10 the owners have one less reason to upgrade their phone. I think it's really nice they brought 2.3.3 to the X10, but I don't expect them to give it much updates aside bugfixes...

Easy?! It's hard if you don't know how, and if you want to make it run fast without lags it is even harder to do... And because the Arc has a newer processor it doesn't mean that something is easy to port.

I hope it can become a reality in our x10 ... Our devs have done a great job. By Sony Ericsson we can't expect anything because they said they will not upgrade beyond 2.3, remember that they said the same thing with the upgrade to 2.1 and now we have our phones with 2.3
I'm fine with SE not releasing 4.0 for the X10. It's an old phone and I don't expect SE to bankrupt themselves just to do so. Gingerbread is pretty robust and there's a huge number of apps that work with it, it's not going anywhere for a while. I think the only other phone from that Android era that will get 4.0 is maybe the Nexus One.
However, since the '11 Xperia range *is* getting ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich), they are probably going to use the same kernel (2.3.32 - based on their prior history). With that said; Their's absolutely no reason why the devs won't be able to port ICS to the X10 (unless if Google does a 180 and doesn't release the source code - like they had with Honeycomb). As far as an official 4.0 for the X10, I doubt it and there's no reason to get anyone's hopes up or else we're going to have another full on XDA SE X10 revolt like before, haha.
It can change but I think ICS will see the X10 only through the devs.

The x10 now has a unlocked bootloader.

Guys look at this!
Recently Android 2.4 firmware, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich got a release date of October-November, 2011. Later Sony Ericsson’s spokesperson has confirmed that all their Xperia Android phones will be getting the free upgrade when ICS becomes available. Phones that will be getting the Android ICS upgrades are Xperia X10, Xperia X8, Xperia Play and all other recently released Xperia phones.
We will update this post once more information about Android 2.4 for Xperia phones becomes available.

X8 will have ICS but probably made by dx or other Xda dev's.Because it will be an open source in conclusion :
[email protected] official SE.
oh damn! well we dont have to worry we have a lot of developers here that are dedicated to giving us and themselves what our phones deserve! Im sure we will get ICS on our beloved X8s!
Ofcourse this is a lie... ICS will be 4.0 ... how can Honeycomb downgrade from 3.x to 2.4 ..lol
ICS will be both for phone and tablets and we will probobly get this update via xda's custom roms not sony!
That is true. As it has been said earlier SE will upgrade only 2011 Xperias, plague for them.

the update od se will be in 4-5month of 2012

the article your read was unfortunatly wrong, x8 will not get ics update, as it is only 2011 devices that will recive it. the x8 is 2010 device and as people are calling it, obsolete now. i still have 12 months till my phone contract finishes so i wont be getting a new one till late 2012 maybe even 2013,( but by then new android will be released )
ICS means 25/175 MB Free RAM on X8. And with this free ram what can we do? nothing..
It means our "multitasking android" will become a simple "NOKIA S40" phone that mean for opening an application we have to close another one due to less free memory for running another app.
Even Android 2.2 on X8 has much better multitasking than Android 2.3.
I think Developers should first fix Android 2.2 and 2.3 because everyone here except some members want the real smartphone of daily life NOT A SHOWPIECE

No man there are bugs still in 2.2 like
1. A/V sync.
2. Auto brightness (like stock ROM)
3.DSP manager.
and many other ignorable bugs but you can not ignore above three bugs.
I have tried GB roms for 3 months I found no problem like these but problem is of more multitasking. So i switched back to FROYO roms. And MODED them according to my needs. But dsp still in bug and most of us want this.
You know why SE refused to give further updates for X8 because they prefer multitasking.
As Eclair Rom on X8 has 110/175 MB free RAM
and Froyo Rom has 80-90 MB free RAM
Gingerbread has 40-65 MB free ram
And finally your ICS has 20-30 MB free ram which is in initial stage.

So... you should have to make a new shouting thread and tell us how you got this much free memory on such roms .
We will surely follow you.
Post all methods and also how many applications you have installed and which rom you have and also which launcher with how many widgets.
If you will make a thread we will be highly thankful to you.

Ok, did everyone noticed that sony ericsson will be no longer sony ericsson? The SE will become SONY as well in the 2012.
Why SE refused to give x8 update? It maybe from ERICSSON side refuse to cooperation With SONY, then SONY throw ERICSSON name from the SONY ERICSSON. And maybe SONY will change his mind, to give update on X8.
You Know, ericsson was bought by SONY, and now SONY throw ERICSSON away.
