Take this for what its worth, but the same got that gave me all the other info before the xoom was released, told me Costco will have wifi only version on March 24. He is saying a price of $639. If anyone followed before he was right on with the date and item numbers but a little off on price for the 3g xoom.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I can't see Costco selling it for almost $100 more than Sam's club. Either way if that date holds up I'll be returning my 3g Xoom for a wifi only one. Absolutely no need for 3g/4g antenna's with a rooted phone and free tethering, especially once I get my tbolt.
I hope he's wrong on the price, especially after hearing the Sam's Club price. I have a membershipt at Costco but it would literally be a better deal to buy a $40 year long membership at Sam's Club just to buy the Xoom at $100 less. Plus I've heard Sam's Club is giving a free gel case with every Xoom...

That was a fake price at a model store where they setup fake product displays.
This date of March 24 makes a lot of sense. Its easily feasible that Verizon dictated to Motorola that they need to have an exclusivity on the 3G version with no WiFi version out for the first month (dirty I know, but I wouldn't put it past them). Then the WiFi comes out exactly 1 month after launch.
Regardless of what Sam's Club's fake pricing at a display store was, I really hope the $639 pricing is incorrect just from the standpoint of getting their sales and market share up. I think its really important for Motorola to at least hit the $599 price point to be in parity with the 32gb iPad, regardless of what you think the advantages/disadvantages of each device is. $599 is the competitive price, and I'd expect Costco to obviously be a few $$ under that, much like they were with the 3G version at $789. There's no way that they would really sell for over $100 more than another store (or even $50 more than another store). We're going to see pretty much perfect price parity across retailers, just like any other device launch.
I'm also intrigued to see what the pricing for the 3G version looks like when the WiFi version comes out as well.
It better be a lot lower than that with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 coming out and Samsung saying they had to re-evaluate some things after the iPad2 launch. Also, the iPad2 will be out at a $500 price point, and the original iPad is selling for $350. Gonna be a hard sell on the Xoom at $650 when there is only one wifi SKU and other options are selling for less.
Personally I think they missed the boat by not offering a 16gb wifi only version right off the bat. They could have easily priced that at $500 and be competitive. $600 isn't an unfair price imo since the wifi 32gb iPad is the same, but even $20 cheaper would have made them look good.
Wifi version will be coming home with me on launch day as long as it's not more than $600.
If they sold a 16gb one, nobody would buy the 32gb one since you can increase the space with SDcard. Apple got the advantage since their Storage is pretty much locked. We have to thank old Stevie jobs for the pricing dilemma since all these other new android tabs won't be price too high.
I am very excited about the Xoom. I am really wanting one.

Me too… although I must said that my interest lays more on the GMS version of the Xoom, if or when they release that model is coming home with me; I happen to travel a lot, therefore in my case having the antenna is almost a must and the cdma thing just does not do it for me in Europe.
I'm pretty sure Moto already said the wifi-only 32GB version will be $599, so the $539 price at Sam's Club makes perfect sense (that's about their typical discount for electronics like this). I'd be surprised to see it at $639 anywhere, including Costco.
I checked out the Xoom at Costco in Mountain View today. Not very impressed because of the weight, the performance of the unit and the price. It's heavier than the iPad 1, and the iPad 1 is already too heavy for me. Touch screen has some lag, screen rotation is definitely not fast and not as pleasant as Apple engineers can do on the iPad. When you rotate the screen, it takes few second for the screen to rotate, but it does not zoom to fit the new screen format and rotate smoothly. It first flash the same display to the new screen format, so if you rotate from portrait to landscape, the right hand side of the screen show a black stripe, because the screen is now wider. Then a little time later, it reformats the display to fill the screen. Same behavior happens when you rotate from landscape to portrait with the missing part below.
The best part is that the sales guy who attended the Costco Mountain View wireless booth tried to teach me a lesson about using the device and how to hold it steady at the angle he specified, like a robot and wait. He said that I don't know how to use the device. Just like Steve Jobs told people how to hold the iPhone4 LOL. Of course, the customer is always wrong.... I walked away and said "No. Thank you anyway!"
Apple succeeds, because it makes the most stupid customers feel empowered. Here you have one of the most advanced device, the Xoom, and the customers feel stupid. Maybe that is the problem of the sales guy at Costco Mountain View this Sunday afternoon, but I felt it's a waste of my time to look at the device. I will certainly not buy the iPad 2, and I will wait for the next Android tablet that really impresses me and not make me feel stupid. Maybe another sales person would do it with the same device

Wow you are really neurotic about screen rotation. It's a consensus around here that the screen rotation is a built in delay, to prevent accidental rotations (that happen all the time on the iPad). I barely notice the delay anymore, and if you're that crazy about what the animation looks like, you should stick with apple I think...
I have had zero trouble getting the device to rotate, it rotates just fine every single time. You just have to be patient and not expect it to flip around like crazy every time you flick it in one direction.
Also, it's almost exactly the same weight as the iPad 1

You may be right. Apple does a great job are marketing to the masses. However that being said, a large screen full of icons is a little antiquated when it comes to the technology race. The only thing apple has over Android is the eco system they have built. Even then it is only a matter of time before Android is somewhat comparable.
In the end I think people want choice. Don't write off the Xoom because of a lame sales Rep. My wife is not technologically savy and she loves her Xoom as do I.

It is so easy to Google for information. It's heavier than the iPad2, but your limp wrist is wrong about it being heavier than the original. You said that even equal to the iPad is too heavy, so I'm not faulting your thought process, just the facts.
I'm glad your entire basis of performance was on the intentional delay built into switching screen orientations. Damn, now I am faulting your thought process.
You don't have to buy it or like it. But if you're going to share the experience with us, please be rational about the conclusions you come to.

Note that I mentioned that the screen rotation is not smooth at all as what you can see on the iPad. The iPad rotates AND zooms at the same time. The Xoom splits the screen rotation in two separate processes and does not do that smoothly. If flashes the original size of the display with black stripe, then delays, then reformats it to fit the screen. That is what I mentioned. The delay in the rotation is understandable and the same delay is in any iPhone and Android phone that I use. It's not the problem that I wanted to point out. I wanted to point out the smoothness of the UI. Anyway, I don't understand why other manufacturers want to compete against Apple and overlook small things (big things for users) that give Apple the success that it achieved. Technically that small problem should not be hard to solve, if competing manufactures pay attention to these small (big) details. It's like you drive a lot of sport cars and when you want to buy the Maserati car and the stick shift hangs between the gear shift and the sales guy say you don't know how to drive a stick shift sport car. Anyway, I am not fanatic with UI, since I stepped up from the Windows Mobile Phone to Android. I have endured a lot of UI design stupidity and I know that I do not want to buy just the UI (otherwise, it's really an easy decision and I would go straight to the Apple store).
Sorry to be off topic Xoom at Costco.

Hi All,
I know this is a HD2 forum, but I was just looking for some opinions on the new Dell Streak now on o2.
I am pleased with o2's phone releases since losing exclusivity on the iphone, and this recent release is quite impressive (and huge!).
Anyway, thoughts please...comparisons etc.
Thanks.
i was looking at that today..
i was considering getting rid of my hd2 for it..but then again..my pockets arent big enough for that phone lol..
so i decided to jsut stick with the hd2 untill they can port android on it or tmobile gets another android device with a 1ghz processor
too big , low quality plastic easily scratches, lower ram ,only landscape
Dell are calling this a tablet to be in the same class as the iPad. So considering the streaks screen is only .7 inches bigger than a hd2's what does that class our device as? A mobile phone, a PDA or a tablet? By Dells reconing it would be a tablet but the streak is really nothing more than a PDA with a phone module. If you look at it this way i'd rather keep my HD2.
I would like to have a play with one to see what its like, but according to the specs, its is huuuge! Would dwarf my HD2.
My feelings are I have had my HD2 for about 8 months now and it is still top end smartphone on the market. Not many other phones I have owned I can say that about. Roll on the next 8 months!
Thanks for the comments so far. I do not think that the Streak's screen size is big enough to warrant calling it a tablet, also, the casing around the device just makes it bigger than it needs to be IMO.
IMHO, I feel that the HD2 is still the best device on the market simply because no two look alike once XDA possesses your soul, and I am still interested in it 8 months on.
Come on competitors, what else can you throw at us? Try harder!
This is exactly the sort of device that I'd replace my HD2 with IMO. Rather than trade down for something with a smaller screen, because lets face it, I don't think any HD2 owners would ever consider doing this after experiencing such ease and clarity with a bigger screen, so the only option is to upgrade in size, and this device certainly ticks the boxes for me.
I love my HD2 and everything that I've been able to do with it since reading & putting into practice all the tweaks that I've learnt of this site, but I'm now feeling like enough is enough as miss the android feeling as it's more 'with the times' than WM. Android itself is growing at an alarming rate and will no doubt be the number 1 mobile OS in a very short time, and the dell streak is the perfect device to complement it.
On a slightly lesser note, it's a shame the device didn't ship with 2.1 or 2.2 but I guess at the time of production, 1.6 was version on offer. I also think the price is good, so selling the HD2 and putting a few quid in seems well worth it.
Too big.
The step from HD2 with 4.3" and thin frame to 5" and thick border is the one that kills convenience and portability for not much. The HD2 is very comfortable yet just fits well in the pocket, but nothing bigger would, and on the other hand 0.7" don't change much in usability.
Android might be the (only?) interesting point.
Just played with 1 in store today for about 10'
It's really huge, not fit in pocket absolutely.
But the screen and colors somehow amazing. With TFT screen, the screen is like a bigger one of HD2.
At 1st, I like the way Dell skin the homescreen, smooth and fast. We can choose how many homescreen, and manage the background apps (somehow).
No double tap, just pinch to zoom when browsing, got flash too.
5mp camera seem not so good.
Looks good apart from it being landscape only. I prefer to hold devices in portrait unless viewing photos/movies, so this alone rules it out for me
Just done some more research and it appears that the Dell does have an accelerometer so should work in both landscape and portrait, can anyone confirm this? Can you type etc in portrait?
didnt know it was landscape only, I am sure this will change with an update though. I have to say I was tempted but I think android has a way to go yet, it hasnt even got a decent video player yet - coreplayer may change that soon though... (dont hold your breath though)
I want one. Hoped I could purchase one from the UK but I would have to move there to do so. Got to wait a month. I hate waiting for anything.
Diane
I'm really tempted by the Streak now. I love huge screen and rarely make phone calls, but I love Winmo too. It's hard to say goodbye with my HD2
I like big screens but the dell has a little too much unused extra dimension for me. I'll wait for the Sony Ericsson 5.5 inch android phone
Actually probably not, HTC will probably have a 5.5 inch out first with minimal bezel like the hd2, and I'd want to get that one.
I have been trying to replace my iphone for about one year. I haven't found anything where the plastic is as nice and I like the way everything looks on the the iphone screen. Tried a few WinMo phones, but everything always looked so TEENY on the screen. A few weeks ago I bought the Nexus One. For a day or two I considered selling it and moving on to the next device, but little by little I am liking it. [I wish the screen was bigger.] I was considering the Dell. I like the Android o/s - **LOVE** Swype. I am getting very good at it now. I had a tough time typing on the Nexus, but with Swype my 'Swypos' are minimal !!
I have Tmobile. Not sure what other phones I could use. Want to stick with Android though.
The only thing that impresses me about the Dell streak is the Gorilla Glass

And to think that I was thinking of getting a screen protector for this bad boy.
I took my friend to go get one yesterday, well what a joke, the guys in O2 aren't allowed to sell it sim free (in my town anyway), they didn't have one on show and we wanted to see it and have a play we both had to put our HD2's behind the counter so they would let us play with it for 5 whole mins (WOW).
So car-phone whorehouse we went 6 of the guys in their didn't even no what it was, even though there was a big poster on the wall, the one guy in there that could help, said yes we sell it sim free £429 i thought thats not bad considering, so he go's in the back to get one, comes out all red faced I'm so sorry guys we haven't even got it in stock yet, were not getting it till next week when the Dell rep comes, (What a joke surely you should no if you have that brand new device in the store yet), so as we walked out laughing we though Phones4U, hahahahaha never had such fun in my life spoke to a girl in there she just look puzzled, then the manager came over, he asked what we wanted explained what it was showed him the leaflet and he said were not getting that phone mate tbh were a sh%t store and just laughed. So he didn't get one went home and ordered one on-line, morale of the story don't go shopping in a poxy town like mine.
After playing with the device got to say it is fun, but
Too Big to use as a phone
landscape only sucks edit(turns out Paul confirmed its not)
you're gonna have to use a headset of some form to take calls
screen is tuff as boots.
I'll stick to the HD2 thanks
The HD 2 was and IS the best Smartphone on the market TODAY, until the HD3 comes
HTC has the most experience in building WM-devices and Android ones and - except obviously raped and misprogrammed Network-Provider-ROMS such as O2, Vodafone, T-mobile - has the most stable performance. I bought mine with HTC-stock-rom, and since ROM 1.48 (and the great mods from the geniouses here at XDA) no freeze occured ever. It is serving me without any flaw all over the world, and this is exactly the same experience that I always had with my Touch HD.
@hoss_n2
You know what you really do post a lot of rubbish on this forum and seem to be seriously misinformed to so I'll answer you points.
too big,
Maybe for you it is but that's just your personal opinion after all for many others it's a great or even perfect size.
low quality plastic easily scratches
Really and you know this how? I played with one today and it's a great quality plastic and feels really good and it's to early to say if it scratches easily or not as no one has owned one long enough. If you mean the screen as well that's also wrong as that's made of Gorilla Glass and their was a video of someone attacking it with a ball point pen and no damage was done check YouTube or Engadget to see it.
Oh and that's not just MO either but that of others that have already got their Streak which includes Paul from MoDoCo. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive.
lower ram
Really as Paul has just been running some tests on it seeing as he has already Rooted it yup in under 1 day it's Rooted and it's showing 408mb of free Ram so where do you get this low Ram idea from then.
only landscape
LMAO just wrong nothing more needs to said here it works in landscape and Portrait modes don't believe me read this post by Paul on MoDoCo where he confirms for some one that the seesmic app goes full screen both in portrait and landscape ?
In fact read the whole thread for his first thoughts on the Streak.
http://android.modaco.com/content/d...-streak-thoughts-dump-got-questions-ask-here/
Having now seen one hands on as opposed to just pictures or videos it is not as big as i thought it was going to be, now if it's to big for you only you can decide but it has to be bigger then an HD2 to fit in a 5" screen.
Marc
I was reading that "review" of the tablet on engadget and they say that the 16gb is gonna be $499 and the 32gb $599.
Is this accurate?

I concur, those are the prices Samsung announced at CTIA for the wifi only version.
The GT 8.9 (early summer release) is priced $30 less the the GT 10.1.
However, Samsung may come out with a lower price to compete with the Transformer.
Some samsung exec was quoted saying 399$ at google io.... Oh how I hope thats the case.

I think the $400 price was a misunderstanding or a fabrication. Can't imagine they'll have any need to price it below $500.

In all reality, to get people like me's sale... I know its a nicer case / form factor / build quality than the transformer, but if the price is 100$ more... i'm going to have a hard time justifying that.
Not to mention they could take the ipad2 by storm by coming in 100$ less.
Either way I guess i'm going to wait until they actually hit the release date and not just preorder before I decide to go with this or the transformer...

I disagree. Tablets in general are WAY overpriced right now. If you compare what you're getting compared to a similarly priced laptop.... smaller screen, slower CPU, no keyboard, less memory, fewer ports, less upgradability, less expensive software, the only thing you get in a tablet that you DON'T get in a typical laptop is a touchscreen. A tablet is going to cost much less to produce than a similarly priced laptop. The only reason they sell them for what they do is because they can, due to the current state of the tablet market. In another year or two, we will all be embarrassed for what we paid for these.
But if you look at the market, probably the biggest competition for the Samsung is the Transformer. It's $400, has a microSD slot, HDMI port, and an optional keyboard that turns it into a netbook with extended battery life and additional ports. The only significant advantage the Samsung has is the form factor: it's about 3/16 of an inch thinner. Whether or not the slimmer sexier design is worth the trade-off in the extra features the Transformer offers is going to be up to the needs of the individual. But losing those features AND paying 25% more, just to get something a little slimmer? That's pushing it. The Transformer is a much better comparison than the Ipad2, because there's no logic in what people will pay for an Apple product. The Gtab is not an Apple.
The only reason I'm still following the Gtab is because of the $400 rumor. If it ends up sticking to the $500 price previously announced, I'll stick with my current Transformer pre-order. In another year or so, they will probably all be at least as svelt as the Gtab, they'll be twice as fast, they'll be running Ice Cream Sandwich, maybe have better screens, more ports, etc, and probably be cheaper. That $100 savings makes it much easier to justify upgrading when this market truly gets competitive.
I disagree, I don't think we can compare toe to toe with laptop like that.
x86 tech vs ARM tech is completely different.
1GB RAM for x86 vs 1GB RAM for ARM should not be the same.
And the touch screen itself can be the deciding factor on the price!
Also the screen technology, IPS display, PLS display, TFT, SLCD ... Gorilla Glass, King Kong glass, etc.
You should know that high end screen tech like IPS and PLS are expensive!
Try to make a laptop with that spec

This is the premium we've always paid for miniaturization. Some people will give the same argument about laptops over desktops. There is always the price to pay to make things smaller, lighter, and more portable.
Also while the hardware specs are lower, the software requirements are also lower.

The Transformer is a cool tablet. I did enjoy it. But in my eyes it has a lot of small flaws and quality issues. But probably worst is I didn't care for it's form factor and overall design. Too wide, ugly bezel, crap speakers in poor position. The microSD, mini HDMI, and keyboard dock together just doesn't quite make up for all the other problems I had with the Transformer.
Form factor is huge. I have to hold this thing in my hands and may do it for two or three hours at a time. It's got to be something I want to hold. The Transformer was certainly lighter than the Xoom. But it still wasn't something I was all that crazy about holding.

I agree. x86 is going to be more expensive, especially once you consider they typically come with a heatsink/fan, and often require a separate video processor.

RAM is RAM. But it's more expensive in a laptop because they typically have more, and they are typically in a slot with an access panel, etc., rather than directly soldered on the main board.
And the touch screen itself can be the deciding factor on the price!

You think a capacitive touchscreen costs significantly more to produce than a mechanical keyboard + touchpad?
Also the screen technology, IPS display, PLS display, TFT, SLCD ... Gorilla Glass, King Kong glass, etc. You should know that high end screen tech like IPS and PLS are expensive!
Try to make a laptop with that spec
There are laptops with IPS screens already. Even on the ones that don't, a typical laptop is going to have around 50% more screen area, or more. That's likely going to more than offset any product cost difference in screen technologies. And glass?!? Do you really think a small sheet of gorrilla glass is expensive, when buying 100k of them? These things you list are fairly trivial when you compare the cost to manufacture something that is mechanically much more complex, with removable hard drives, upgradable memory, removable batteries, active cooling systems, etc.
But we'll see where the prices of tablets go over the next couple of years, vs. laptops. ;-)

I agree with this to an extent, but in the case of a tablet, it is a fairly monolithic device. It can cost more to make something mechanically complex smaller, but a tablet can be produced cheaper than a laptop, because it's just a sandwich of mostly immobile components. They will retain a premium until competition ramps up, and the price starts to be dictated by how cheap they can produce them while still making a profit, rather than what they can sell them for just because there's suddenly a huge demand for them.
Also while the hardware specs are lower, the software requirements are also lower.

Understood. But that doesn't change the fact that a much more complex CPU costs more to produce than a simple one. And Honeycomb costs lest than Windows 7. ;-)
The Transformer is a cool tablet. I did enjoy it. But in my eyes it has a lot of small flaws and quality issues.

Yes, I don't discount that. But some have claimed great build quality with their transformers. So it seems more of an issue of quality control, rather than inherent component quality. That could simply be an issue of Asus trying to push these out as fast as they can right now. They KNOW the clock is ticking. Competition is right on their heels. They're trying to sell as many as they can while they have a relatively captive audience. Right now, they are going for MSRP, or more. I don't know about you, but I rarely pay MSRP on consumer electronic devices. If it's not at least 25% below MSRP, I don't feel like I'm getting a good deal. And you can bet these will quickly get to 25% below, and even lower, as competition ramps up. Everyone is trying to sell these as fast as they can while they can still enjoy that premium. We can't yet say Samsung won't also have some issues in the beginning.
But probably worst is I didn't care for it's form factor and overall design. Too wide... Form factor is huge

Yes, I understand, which is exactly why I was waiting to see where the Samsung price fell. I too would like something slimmer, I just don't think it's prudent for me to pay $100 more for it at this stage in the market. Tegra3 is supposed to come out this fall, Samsung has already shown prototypes of 2560x1600 superbright 10.1" displays.... this market is in the infant stage, and will likely mature a lot over the next couple of years. It seems more wise for ME to be frugal at this point, because I'll likely want to upgrade in a year or so.
The Transformer was certainly lighter than the Xoom. But it still wasn't something I was all that crazy about holding.

And look at the size of the Viewsonic before that. These things have evolved very quickly over the past 6 months. Samsung's tablet got downsized before it even got released!

Yep. There's still a chance it'll come down by the time it gets released, but I agree that it's not looking good. But no problem, I'll make due with the Transformer and be $100 ahead when I start looking at the G2 devices.

Laptops don't have Gorilla Glass because they don't need it, though some do have IPS screens. You can also find some with touchscreens, but if you read the reviews, you find that many don't consider it much of an advantage, because it's awkward switching from keyboard input to touchscreen. Reviews of the Transformer have touched on this, saying they're glad it has a touchpad, because that makes more sense when using a keyboard. These items just aren't as important on a laptop.

And that's been my whole point. Tablets cost what they cost because of supply/demand, not because they are expensive to make. If I were smart, I wouldn't buy ANY tablet until the market has had a chance to stablize. It's brand new right now, and is going through higher than normal evolution. But if I'm not going to be smart, and instead pay the supply/demand premium for something I'll likely want to replace in a year or so, it's at least a little less dumb to get the more valuable choice, as opposed to the sexier but more expensive choice.

Early adopters are always going to pay a premiumn price if they want to use leading edge products. I do not belive it is a supply and demand related. It is simply a new product and companies are trying to recoup their R&D costs.
Same thing happened several years ago with HDTV's were launched. Yes, LCD rear projection HDTV's were the leading edge ($4,500). Today some five - six years later an LED HDTV ($1600).
We all know whatever electronics we buy today it will be faster and cheaper the following year. So, one can always sit on the fence and wait until the next best thing comes along. ;-) or take the plunge when you are comfortable with the price.
I cant agree with the whole new technology thing. what doesn't make sense Is that smartphones have been around for a long time now yet my captivate no contract cost 599 its not new technology just better

Understood. Though the current flux of the tablet market is much greater than is typical for other technologies. The HDTV market you compared to has been evolving over the past decade. The Viewsonic G tablet just came out about six months ago, and cost $400 up until just a few months ago. Now it's $275. The original question was whether or not the Samsung should be priced less than $500. $500 puts it on par with the Ipad 2, and $100 higher than the (more comparable, IMO) Transformer, which while not as svelte, adds SD and HDMI. And the Samsung is still at least three weeks from becoming available. Tegra 3 is supposed to be ready by fall, with "5x" the performance. Given the timing, the fast pace that this market is moving, and the competition, $500 just doesn't seem very competitive to me.

Mine does not feel cheap. Feels well put together. Some people think it feels cheap because it has a plastic back. That to me doesn't mean it is cheap. I don't need metal to feel something is quality.
If you had problems with it creaking and seems like you had problems with the screen, I assure you that is not how it is supposed to be. RMA.

Tired of these threads. If u don't like, just go away. It's a $399 tablet and build quality is excellent for a $399 tablet. Maybe some company will release a tablet for twice the price one day made out of carbon fiber, but who the hell cares if it does the exact same thing as a $399 tablet. Lets get over this once and for all. Next, everyone will be saying that its not good enough because it doesn't have tegra 3 chipset or it doesn't run Windows 8 or it doesn't make pancakes. The TF is a great tablet that many of us love and anyone who doesn't probably should just get an iPad 2 or wait for the iPad 3 or just avoid tablets altogether...

Don't be tired of these threads, everyone has the right to say what he thinks.
I had the Transformer for a day and had to send it back.
The quality of my Transformer was disappointing. The Upper rigth corner of the touch screen was not in line with the other corners, it was lower by 3 mm that the metal frame. The back was 3mm above the metal frame.
Not to speak that i could see through the hole between the touch screen and the metal frame.
So i think that those who got a good Transformer should be happy. But not all of them are great, in fact i think that the quality control was nonexistent.
NOT EVERYONE GOT A PERFECT TRANSFORMER!!!!!
If you did get o good one it does not mean the problems you hear about and you are tired off are not there.
I sent mine back and now i am waiting to get a replacement.
i have slight creaking only in the very edge of the top right an bottom left corner but its only a little other wise the build is good not cheap

By the way, if the OP wants good build quality you should pick up an iPad 2, they are half metal and feel sturdy. Just don't sell one of your kidneys like that kid.
yeah agree...why need to create another new thread ?? just find a related thread and post in it. next time another thread like this appear, can consider it as spam/troll
Oddly the demo units at staples feel like they were built like a tank. No creak or flex. Very solid despite plastic back.
I am on my fourth and waiting for my 5th TF.
EACH has suffered light bleed with the most recent one being the best so far.
However while it was solid on day one it now is creaking along the top left and right corners and a bit on the right side. If unit number five is no better they all go back and I get a Samsung. The dock for me is not so important as a laptop owner that I will accept such poor build quality.
my ipad 1 bought a year ago has no bleed no creaks after a year of use. The demo units in 3 stores of the transformer were all solid so I know Asus can build them well but likely make different units better made to be used as demos.
I suspect this as o e staples store who had just got product in and had not had their demo put out yet would not let me buy their demo unit.

My gf's Galaxy Tab is solid as any tab I've ever handled, so therefore I think all Galaxy Tabs are perfect and you have the only bad one.
Sarcasm (not directed at you personally), hopefully it was duly noted The TF has some bad batches, I think that's obvious. You can say, "Oh it's just a small number on XDA!" but you can probably use this small sample and apply it to the entire user base and come up with an idea of the amount of defective units. Sounds like the early batches were rushed out the door to meet a deadline and demand.
Mine is pretty solid. Creaky, one spot of light bleed, but tolerable for the cheapest HC tablet, and I love it like I'd love my first born, if I had a first born. Still the best deal out there.

Yeah, Galaxy Tab 10.1 is supposed to be really thin but I still don't want it.
Compared to the Transformer it's more expensive, no expandable memory, no IPS display, and build is plastic just like our Eee Pads.
Honestly the Transformer has a few bugs, Honeycomb too... but overall you cannot beat this thing, no contest when you consider cost.

I was pretty happy with the overall design of the tablet but their quality control does leave a bit to be desired. I've had 2 tablets and both have a defect. One was light bleed and the most recent one came with a broken power button.
I'm not sure if I should keep trying replacements or call it quits on Asus.

I thought there was a lot of people with the screen bleeding issue? The way you guys make it sound that the screen be perfect. Unfortunately I noticed I got some serious bleeding myself. I just cant figure out if it's worth RMA and all that. It might take forever for KMART to get anymore back in stock.
I thought I read a lot of people had the issue also. It doesnt bother me at all really, but one of these posts made me feel that I should exchange it ASAP
As the title says:
I was so utterly disappointed with the 10.1
The first one I got Friday Morning had dead pixels on the black status bar at the bottom of the screen. I returned it a couple hours later to Best Buy.
The second one has dust under the middle of the screen. You could see black spots while surfing the web.
Finally, the third one had 8 pieces of dust under the right side of the screen.
I decided to return it and wait for a rumored Nexus Tab or Ice Cream.
Don't get me wrong I LOVE Android. I have the Nexus S 4g, and I have always had android phones. I had the Xoom, but it was too heavy and large. I really had high hopes for the Galaxy Tab. Yet, its sad that the build quality is lacking..
And... lets be honest, Honeycomb needs a LOT of polishing. Its laggy, and has none of the media consumption apps people crave(i.e. netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, etc.)
If you like the Tab do yourself a favor and try not to look at the screen too close.. I fear that there are imperfections on most of them... which is inexcusable
Sounds like you may have had a string of bad luck with the devices. Remember stuff like that gets shipped in bulk so it may have been just an issue with the one shipment to that Best Buy.
I haven't had any issues with build quality on mine. Was worried about the plastic backing but it doesn't dent in like the aluminum on my iPad so it's actually a plus (and it makes the thing lighter). I won't disagree with the Honeycomb needing polish however. For the most part it works fine but there is a significant lack of tablet optimized apps out there and the input lag in the stock browser is annoying at best.

I just got frustrated man. when you are dropping that much cash on a tab it should be flawless. ya know
Flawless is debatable... there is no such thing.. my $80k car (AMG C63 if anyone cares) is far from flawless, my house.. far from flawless. I have purchased $100+ software/hardware packages (Arcsight.. ridiculously expensive), far from flawless....
If you had asked me 10 or 20 years ago, then I would have agreed, but these days, everything is released with flaws and bugs, it is just how it is these days, and you will have to accept it, or you will never buy anything again..
Yeah man, I understand. I'd be pretty pissed to if I had to return my brand new shiny three times. But it's what all early adopters have to put up with; higher prices, untested technology, new waters and the like. It's what makes it fun,
This would be more shoddy QA than shoddy build quality wouldn't it? I actually quite like the build quality on the thing but could see getting pissed off if I had dust under the screen.
My experience that some people who are hyper-sensitive to "flaws" in devices are those that were truly unsure about their purchase in the first place. When they experience buyer's remorse, they suddenly find "flaws" in the device rather than admit that they made a poor purchasing decision. This bad behavior is unfortunately reinforced by the return policies of the retailers that charge restocking fees except in case of defects.
I'm not saying this is the case with OP. Just an observation.

The 2011 C63 AMG starts at < $60k in the US (though realistically, $70k is the cheapest you'll find it). I'm not sure what the differences are vs the euro models.

They are definitely cheaper in the US then in most other places (even DE.. which is odd since they are made there...)
Base model runs around 60k, once you start adding options.. it goes up fast, I have everything but the Performance Package, and the number I through out is the avg for a model configured as mine, I did not pay that much (who ever pays MSRP anyways), as I picked mine up used (Certified Pre Owned model from MB).
You want horrible.. check out the C63 in Australia.. they run almost $200k AU. Half of that is I believe a luxury tax penalty....

Yeah.. and it rattles alot.. drives me nuts.. granted that may have something to do with the monster V8 they shoehorned into the little C class.. but still, at the price point, they should have used better materials. At least in EU, and most of the rest of the world, you can get the option of leather dash/console/etc which replaces much of the plastic.. but that is not available on the C class for US AMG models, it is on the E and up classes though.

The rattles are caused by a combination of low-profile tires, punishing suspension, and clips that hold dashboard components in place instead of screws. Also, the torsional rigidity of the C isn't as stiff as the E so when you go up driveways and the chassis flexes, that eventually takes its toll on tight tolerance components. Sometimes covering them with leather helps; sometimes not.
The greater concern to me is why MB didn't include an LSD with that car as standard equipment. It's part of the P30 package or a $2,000 standalone option, which to me makes next to no sense. All that power needs a way to get it reliably to the pavement!

Sounds like you had really bad luck. Did you exchange them from the same place? It might be the batch the store received was the problem, either tampered in production or in transportation. Overall, people seem to be happy with the build, including myself, so it seems you're case was exceptional, and you may give it another try at a different store or vendor.
Nexus Tab/Ice Cream are at best Q4, which can be 4-6 months away, and I wouldn't be surprised if they only came out next year. Honeycomb will definately improve before then, especially in a few weeks we should have custom ROMs too.
Dead pixels AND dust under the screen! I agree 100% with the OP. If you really got three in a row with screen defects that is not acceptable. You can ignore virtually any nick, ding or scratch on the body of a tablet, but it's really hard to ignore screen defects. Especially central ones. In many respects a tablet IS the screen. It's what you interact with all day long.
I'm not that surprised. Samsung sometimes has quality control issues. I ended up returning three Samsung projection TV's in a row once. One of them actually had a picture that was physically tilted so that one side was higher than the other - can't quite understand how that got past quality control. And then there is the recent GPS disaster with the Galaxy S phones - I had one of those and finally ended up getting rid of it because It was impossible to navigate with it.
Samsung is a strange company. They produce cutting edge products that have lots of rough edges. But when you finally get one of Samsung's devices that works correctly, they are sometimes really good. When I finally got a working TV from Samsung, after my fourth try, it lasted forever - superb picture and no problems. Love my Tab 7. And even the Galaxy S was a great phone, as long as you didn't have to get anywhere on time.
I'm surprised that Best Buy didn't give you a hard time with the dead pixels. Every once in a while you get a smart-assed salesman who likes to quote a dead pixel rule: "we can only exchange it if there are 5 or more dead pixels. Just because there's a big black one dead center in the middle of your screen isn't sufficient cause for an exchange!") Had circuit city try this with me on an LCD TV. Course stuff like that is probably the reason they went bankrupt.
This is one reason I prefer buying from brick and mortar stores with items like this. If Best Buy gave you no trouble with 3 returns, thats really commendable on their part. They would get my repeat business just for that.

??? You have got to be kidding, right ? You may have low expectation and willing to take flaws, but not me, not now, not ever. Doing so just tells the manufactur we will accept the flaws and be done with it. Goodness, accept it ? No way

Did you clean your glasses before you inspected the tablet?
(J/k I returned one due to back light bleeding)
OP, if you got all of those from the same place, I suggest giving it one more shot and buying it somewhere else.
This is my 5th Android tablet. The first Transformer had gone directly back to Best Buy due to terrible light bleed. Transformer Prime sold in a month. It had its obvious problems plus a screen problem: when you press a little harder on the right side of the screen it would flicker into white. Probably a faulty one. This is my 3d transformer and it is not that impressive. Surprisingly there is no light bleed at all, but the Prime was much better in every way. I sense and hear a squeaky sound when I press the right side of the back camera just under the power button as though it was not fitted well. I pressed all the sides and corners of the tablet, only this spot gives that sound. There is an emptiness there. It really is annoying. I still think I will keep it but wait for the new Samsung. MY GTAB 7 and 10.1 were also made with plastic but they were sturdier and far better in build quality. Asus keeps disappointing me.
Cool story bro.
Perhaps your expectations doesn't match the design specs and price tag of this machine? To me it seems they opted for better guts then exterior and screen.
Thats very true. ASUS wanted to give a nice device to those who couldn't meet the price tag. Everything comes at a cost, this tablet is plastic :T

Firstly, I am not quite sure why anyone would want to press the back right side of the tablet next to the back camera? If it squeaks, don't press it, no function on this tablet requires that part pressed, nor is it near anywhere near where one would hold it.
This is my 3rd tablet as well.
First, I had a Prime. I disagree the Prime was better in every way. No GPS, poor wifi signal, micro sd card slot poorly placed so the card kept popping out, micro hdmi port was loose - cable kept coming unplugged. Is the prime sexier, sure, but the aforementioned problems made it quite non-functional.
Second I had an Acer A510. Great tablet, just a bit bulky and had a terrible heat problem where the back of the tablet would reach over 100 degrees when 3D gaming...could not hold it anymore it was so hot. Also, due to low sales volumes, the tablet does not have much developer support, still don't have their own forum with similar launch date to this tablet.
I have had none of these problems on my TF300, it works amazingly well. I actually don't mind the plastic, it is comfortable to hold, and looks much better than I thought it would. The sound is great for a tablet, I had the a510 and believe this is comparable, even without the speaker separation. Is this tablet perfect, no: Battery life could be better and they could have used Gorilla glass, but those are minor nuisances compared to what I have dealt with on my other 2 two tablets and I don't think any tablet is perfect. I am not a budget buyer and purchased this tablet originally to check it out, but it is so good compared to anything else I have used, I plan to keep it and enjoy it.
I did press to get it out from its keyboard dock. Thats how I realized it was not fitted well. Do we really have to accept something with its flaws because it is cheaper? ASUS is a brand name I respect. I had more than 6 laptops, netbooks and now an ultrabook which I LOVE!!!! But we have to accept that Asus is less attentive when it comes to Android. We will see how they will try hard this fall or next year with their Windows 8 tablets and stuff.
I honestly think the build quality is great with the 399 price tag. I have no issues with light bleeding, creaking or loose parts. So far my experience is great and have no complaints.
Love my tab after unlocking and installing cm9. How much more could you ask for with a guad core processor and 399.99 price tag for a 32 gb! all the tablets I see are dual core for 399.99 for 16gb.
Asus, in my opinion gave us a budget tablet and then some. The realm of this tablet was to cut cost so everyone could afford Tegra 3 without buying a 700$ unit. I love my tablet

Great, cheap, tablet.
Always fun to see how people can differ.
Some like the building quality and others think everything is cr*p. I think this is purely what you expect of it and what you want to spend. If you buy an IPad it is not comparable to a Asus because as the manufacturer is different the buildingprocess is different.
I think you (the topicstarter) just want to get a almost undestructible tablet. But tablets are just fragile and if you have a technical problem with one you just bring it back to the shop because you have warrenty.
At this point in time there is no better tablet to buy, yes i had the cash to get a prime, but i need good wifi coverage, which the prime has not, so i bought this one. I don't want older technology , and surely not at the same price (all other tabs are dual core at maximum)
I just didnt feel the thrill I felt when I held my Samsung 10.1 for the first time or even the TR Prime. TR Prime just for a couple of days.... But I agree with most views here. It is a very good tablet for its price. I like the battery usage. I havent charged it for more than 2 days now. Unnoticeable light bleed, etc... Just that squeaky sound
BTW. No Riptide onboard was a bum!
I think mine is fine, besides some uncomfortable cracking I tend to hear with the keyboard dock. Then again, I was not very impressed by my Asus laptop in terms of build quality either. I feel weird buying another Asus product after that laptop but there is nothing else that compares as far as I am concerned when it comes to tablets. I deal with it.
Well I was greeted with a busted pixel upon opening package still gave a try then started to have small bleed then by third week serious bleed, then when I hold on certain spots in landscape and portrait at different angles I get this blur like bleed as if im pressing to hard felt like if I held any looser I would drop it, also can barely see in the sun light other than that it works like heaven which really bugs me because I want it but dont believe it will last so im sending back and waiting for the reviews for the 700 when it releases after atleast a month has passed till then I will be pad less...........

I have none of those problems. You must have a defective unit, try exchanging for another one before final judgment.

I honestly love this pad but I see im not the only one experiencing this only bought this because the wifi issue with prime if the 700 solves this without a dongle with a better and brighter screen then I will get that one instead. I have a good relationship with amazon hate returning things multiple times I dont want to take another risk but you guys got a great pad for the price that is if you got a good one. Im gonna miss this pad but im hoping the 700 is worth the wait?????

You nailed it! The only other tablets to compare to this one is the prime (poor GPS and wifi at $500) and the Acer a510 (no keyboard dock, overheat issues stalled sales at $450) and the Toshiba excite( screen issues, OS issues for I think $500- $550).
NO BRAINER to me.
Even if I dont thing 400 is cheap, it is a very good Pad. I dont have any dead pixels and not one other Problem. Wifi is is even better than my last tablet (Hannspad ). Would recommend it at any time.
The 300 is pretty much built the same way as the 101 plastic back..
