[TUTORIAL][EURO][GSM] How To Install Overcome v1.2.1 - Galaxy Tab General

For this guide you need a 4 Gb or larger external SD Card inserted into the Tab. Make sure its formated fat32 (often default from factory). This is a n00bz guide for people like me new to the Tab. You do it at your own risk as usual.
Step 1:
First make sure your Galaxy Tab has a none locked bootloader and is rooted.
http://leemn.wordpress.com/2011/01/28/galaxy-tab-bootloader-unlocked-by-chainfire/
http://www.dkszone.net/unlock-samsung-galaxy-tab-bootloader
If you have installed Rotohammers ROM or any other custom ROM then it is unlocked already.
2.
Download 'Euro Tab Bootstrapper' off Market. (or the one that fits your tab version)
3.
Copy the Overcome_v1.2.1_Full.zip to the external sd-card.
Get it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932082
4.
Fire up the 'Euro Tab Bootstrapper' application and choose 'Bootstrap Recovery' and then 'Reboot Recovery'. Your Tab will now reboot and go into Recovery mode where it will convert your system to ext4. When it's done reboot your device and hold in the power button and volume up button at the same time so you enter recovery mode. From here you choose install zip from sdcard and install Overcome_v1.2.1_Full.zip. Navigate with volume buttons and select with power button.
5. Enjoy a very nice ROM You might also want to you into recovery mode again buy holding in the volume up button and power botton to wipe the cache partition.

Is it possible to update from 1.2.0 without wiping data? Obviously I'll be backing up first but being able to update without the data wipe would be great.

I used Titanium Backup from Market to bakup my Apps before I upgraded. Then I restored them with Ti Backup again Went very smooth.
This guide can be used for Verizon, ATT and all the other Tabs also that ROM Manager supports or if there are external programs like the Euro Boot Strapper to
support your device.

I'm on modaco rom and kernal now, how do i go over to this rom and kernal? Do i have to do a wipe?

I didn't wipe. Don't think u need it either.

Will this package replace the kernal too?

[Q] new rom

How exactly do you install a new rom, such as this one, NFX-Shift STOCK 1.17.651.1 PNG optimized/zipaligned deodexed? I followed the steps to set-up recovery and created a nandroid back-up, but how can I check to see if it worked. Just still a bit nervous about crashing or ruining my shift.
Boot into recovery by turning your phone off, then powering back on while holding the vol down button.
When you see the bootloader select Recovery.
Choose factory reset/data wipe.
When it finishes select install zip from SD and navigate to the ROM you wish to install (DO NOT select install update.zip)
When it finishes doing its thing choose Reboot to system.
If there are any problems boot back to recovery and restore your backup.
this is how to install a new rom correct? Thanks
yep, have fun
You need to read more and gain more confidence in what your doing

Not able to upgrade to froyo

My objective is to upgrade to froyo.
I have stock samsung vibrant eclair. Device is rooted, has recovery manager installed, is not hardware locked. I have already installed clockwise recovery using rom manager.
I have bionix rom downloaded to my internal sd card's root folder. I select "install from folder" in rom manager. It reboots but I do not find any option to install from sd card. I do reinstall software, out just installs update.zip and reboots to 2.1 over and again.
In short, I can not figure out how to get into clockwise recovery. It just shows 4 options _ reboot, reinstall, wipe user data and write cache. No option to install from sd card. I have wiping data and cache but that does not help.
Incidentally, I had successfully flashed bionix but can not do it again.

*clockwork recovery
Look on your internal SD card, do you see an Update.zip file?
Tried 3 button recovery procedure, reinstall packages, reboots into cwm, then install from zip?
Had issue with 3e recovery where it would do start you describe, but not from stock.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Try it more than once if you have rooted it already with update folder or superoneclick. It can take 2 or 3 tries to recognize. IT you get stuck Odin back to stock, then root and go from there. good luck
Locate the update file and delete it. In clockworkmod recovery app you need to choose flash clockworkmod recovery... its the top section in the app. Then choose vibrant. It will download and then flash it. Then choose boot into recovery. Then when in recovery choose reinstall packages. Then reinstall packages again. You should get clockworkmod recovery. Then choose your zip and locate on sd card and install.

Odd...maybe try flashing one of supercurio's voodoo kernels, they have cwm built in.

Ok i had the same issues i couldn't reboot into cwm recovery always to default 2e. I found workaround
1. Download cwm recovery for your phone
2. Rename that folder to update.zip
3. Put update.zip to internal SD card
4. Turn off phone
5. Hold volume up and down and power button
6. When you go to recovery go to install packages it will install cwm and it will go to cwm automatically
7.Now go to install zip from SD card find your ROM
8. Enjoy
I am 2e recovery. Tried to reflash it from cwm.
Is there a link to download cwm as a file so I can flash it using reinstall option.

Here you go http://www.2shared.com/file/rpqd2-ET/recovery-clockwork-2512-galaxy.html
Link gives me error - invalid link. Could it be because I am downloading it on the phone directly?

In the meanwhile I did this ...
Deleted update.zip from rot folder.
In rom manager, choose option to flash clock wise recovery.
In the file manager, I could see that update.zip file was now there .. 577kb.
In rom manager, I chose to reboot into recovery
Reinstall option in the recovery mode.
It gave me an error something like.
.. Inflation aborted ... ,(bad)
Seems like the file getting downloaded is bad.
Any ideas?

@raaaa86 I am struck at a place where I dont have internet on laptop which is one reason why I am trying to get to 2.2
I know one could tether in 2.1 but I have forgotten how to.. Any quick way to do that?

@jmcghee1973.. Tried to go through the posts in the dev section but could not figure out an odin flashable rom. Direct link would be great.

Try with phone from this link

**Solved**
Here is how...
I can not say for sure that this exactly solved the issue since I did quite a few other things before being able to boot into recovery mode. But this would be my best conclusion:
- Open Rom Manager
- Menu -> Clear cache
- Flash clockwise recovery again
I believe, somewhere I had a bad download that did not do proper flashing of the clockwise recovery. Here is the link that ticked me..
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/koush/47399-upgrade-rom-rom-manager-problem.html
In between my last post and now, I did the below other steps:
- Got hold of a place to hook up my laptop to a decent speed internet
- Used Mini kies to flash stock 2.2 rom from Samsung
- So, at this time, I was on 2.2 already
- Used SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse to root the phone
- Got error "Not enough space" during copying
- adb shell and remounted /system in rw mode
- cleaned up some bloatware in /system/app folder so that I had about 15 MB free in /system
- Used "3e_recovery_installer" to install modified recovery to address the signature issue with the stock samsung ROM
- Reboot
- Open ROM manager. Clear Cache as mentioned above
- Flash clockwise recovery, reboot, reinstall
- VOILLA! i am in the Clockwise recovery screen
- And there I flashed the bionix 1.2.1
THANKS TO ALL FOR THE QUICK RESPONSES, LINKS etc. Very much appreciated.

Really confused can anyone please help

I have rooted my hero using androot, downloaded rom manager and let it flash clockwork recovery that worked, i turned my phone off then on again with the power and home buttons pressed, did a back up with no problems. This bit confused me, i did the power on with the home and power buttons pressed just to make sure it worked, and i got the phone with a red triangle again, what does this mean ?? :S

It means your clockworkmod recovery is gone, and you have no recovery image. Maybe it's because androot. It is not a complete root. To check your backup, just search in your sd card. There must be a nandroid folder.
To get back recovery, mayby you should use rom manager again or do a full root.

What you need to do is
1. Make sure you have a custom rom Zip on your SD card
2. Do Androot
3. Do Nand Backup
4. Full wipe
5. install your Custom rom
and you are done.. once you install the custom rom you can keep going to recovery as many times as you want

Do you mean by CWM?
If you do then it is not stock anymore is it?

Do a nandroid backup. You don't need to have root for that.
| Mobile Message
CWM
Backup:
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Select "backup and restore"
3. Select "backup" or "backup to external sdcard" depending on where you want your backup saved (recommended to keep at least one backup, preferably stock, on the internal sdcard in case of external sdcard malfunction)
4. Select "Reboot now" to reboot the phone
*note: the backup can be found in the "clockworkmod" folder (either on internal sdcard or external depending on chosen save location) where you can rename the backup to something you will remember rather then a series of numbers. DO NOT INCLUDE SPACES WHEN RENAMING! including spaces in the backup name will cause you to get the MD5-mismatch error when trying to restore the backup at a later time*
TWRP
1. power phone off
2. boot into recovery by holding the home + volume up + power; when phone vibrates release the POWER button only and continue holding home and volume up till recovery screen loads
3. Select backup
4 select back to "external sd card" or "backup
5. enable compression and change name of your backup if you like (gives you smaller backup sizes)
6. swipe the arrow bar and let the backup process run

I know how to use cwm and twrp to create a nandroid backup, but i need to flash them first and so the rom is not stock anymore. Does a stock rom comes with cwm or twrp - No, so after i flash cwm or twrp it is not stock anymore.
I guess what you are saying is that tgere is no way of backing up a FULLY stock rom. Correct?
Thanks.

Hi ,
A nandroid does not take the recovery into consideration.
So, you will still get a "Stock " image when you make a nandroid.

Hi,
Yes.
+1 for wanting to know if there is a way to image a factory S4, as is, without rooting or installing a different recovery.

[Q] Installing custom ROM's

I've seen instructions for installing custom ROM's where you bring up the ROM file inside Odin (PDA area),
then you place the cell in Download mode, then you hit the [Start] button.
Instead of doing this, why can't you place the ROM files onto the SD card, then use Recovery mode to install them from there?
Thanks!

I only used Odin to root my device. After setting up a custom recovery, I've downloaded all my ROMs to the SD card and flashed them from there. Since you're (hopefully making and) putting your nandroid backup on the SD card, it makes it very easy to recover from an accident.
The method I used was from a Youtube video where the guy used Odin to root, and then GooManager to install TWRP. I've got a custom ROM on my phone and haven't looked back.
Good luck and have fun,
-Jeff
you need a custom recovery, I prefer TWRP, as stated above you can get it through goomanager which is available from the play store. after installing the recovery you can download any rom you want to your pc, transfer it to your phone (either phone storage or external SD) after that go into recovery mode on the phone (hold volume UP home button and power button down at the same time, when you see the Samsung logo, let off all buttons) at this point you can find the rom you transferred, and flash, before flashing anything you will want to do a nandroid backup, then do a full wipe before flashing the rom. after the rom is installed you can go into recovery through the power menu. good luck!

So a couple of questions then:
1: You cannot install a ROM using stock recovery?
2: What's included in an nandroid backup?
I'm assuming it includes the modem/radio files, yes?

1. no, you will need either TWRP ot CWM
2. backs up all your data, etc, so yes everything gets backed up

You use Odin to flash .tar files, which reverts your phone back to stock, unrooted factory condition.
Once you've rooted the phone, you use a custom recovery to install unsigned .zip files, which will generally be custom roms and/or mods.
Stock recovery will only install .zip files that are signed by the manufacturer, such as OTA updates and....not much else. If your phone is rooted, you have absolutely no use for stock recovery.
A Nandroid backup will usually include the boot image, system files, and user apps & data. I use TWRP, which also gives you the option to back up your recovery and EFS partition (telephony data). In most cases, you only need to make a backup of boot, system, and data.
Hope this helps.
