How exactly do you install a new rom, such as this one, NFX-Shift STOCK 1.17.651.1 PNG optimized/zipaligned deodexed? I followed the steps to set-up recovery and created a nandroid back-up, but how can I check to see if it worked. Just still a bit nervous about crashing or ruining my shift.
Boot into recovery by turning your phone off, then powering back on while holding the vol down button.
When you see the bootloader select Recovery.
Choose factory reset/data wipe.
When it finishes select install zip from SD and navigate to the ROM you wish to install (DO NOT select install update.zip)
When it finishes doing its thing choose Reboot to system.
If there are any problems boot back to recovery and restore your backup.
this is how to install a new rom correct? Thanks
yep, have fun

when i enter the recovery mode
i got into Android system recovery (2e)
then i choose apply sdcard:update.zip
then it forward me to ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5..
then i choose apply sdcard:update.zip again..
then it rebooted and back to system recovery (2e) again
what should i do to fix this ? i want to update my ROM
If your custom ROM can be flashed via cwm, go save it in your internal sd then use the install zip in sd card option in cwm.
I suggest you do a full nandroid back-up first just to be on the safe side...
thanks for reply..
i think i can't use cwm anymore to flash.. since it keeps looping between this two recovery mode.. i just flash it using odin, now i'm runnning original firmware 2.1
but i still see those two recovery mode.. how to remove one of them ?
When you get into Clockwork, don't press the "apply update.zip".
Select "install zip from sdcard" and locate your roms .zip and install it.
Read the instructions again and again until you understand it. It's obvious that you have no idea what you are doing.

If I understand your post correctly, you are having trouble getting into CWM after installing it. I had the same thing on my phone.
When going into recovery, you hold down the power button, the home button and the volume up button and release the home button when the Samsung screen appears. I tried releasing the power button when the Samsung screen appears and it goes into CWM recovery.
Ian
Im already rooted+soff+eng hboot and having trouble understanding the whole process.
I need to backup my stock, wipe, then flash ROM.
How do i do a backup?
Whats is Nandroid, Clockwork, Recovery mode, ROM Manager and how to use then?
Wipe and flashing is done through recovery mode?
Is there specific recovery images for each ROM?
Thanks in advance.
------------------------------------------
If i understand correct, a recovery image need to be loaded so i can use the typical recovery options(flash, backup, wipe).
- first thing you'll need to do, is install clockworkmod rom manager from the market. it's free, but you should donate for the pro version if you like it.
- once you're in it, you'll need to press "flash recovery." it should flash the 2.5.1.2 recovery on your phone. do this twice as for some reason, doing it once doesn't get it done.
- after that you can then boot into recovery mode.
--you can either boot into recovery mode from within rom manager, or,
--you can boot into the bootloader (power off your device, and then hold the volume down button and hold the power button, and then let the power button go but keep the volume down button until the bootloader shows up) and then choose "recovery" from the menu
- once you're in recovery, you can do backups, restores, etc.
- a nandroid = full backup
- a full wipe/factory allows you to completely wipe your system so that it's ready for a new rom
- a wipe cache and a wipe dalvik (and possibly fix permissions) is what you'd usually do if you're just doing an incremental upgrade to an existing rom
- recovery 2.5.1.2 (installed from rom manager) will allow you do work with all roms except for cm7/gingerbread roms. those roms require recovery 3.x.x.x
feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, and hope that helps.
is it need to use z4root root the phone
i try to get into recovery through two method but only get phone icon and triangle icon
what step i done wrong or something i missing to do?
I have rooted my hero using androot, downloaded rom manager and let it flash clockwork recovery that worked, i turned my phone off then on again with the power and home buttons pressed, did a back up with no problems. This bit confused me, i did the power on with the home and power buttons pressed just to make sure it worked, and i got the phone with a red triangle again, what does this mean ?? :S

It means your clockworkmod recovery is gone, and you have no recovery image. Maybe it's because androot. It is not a complete root. To check your backup, just search in your sd card. There must be a nandroid folder.
To get back recovery, mayby you should use rom manager again or do a full root.

What you need to do is
1. Make sure you have a custom rom Zip on your SD card
2. Do Androot
3. Do Nand Backup
4. Full wipe
5. install your Custom rom
and you are done.. once you install the custom rom you can keep going to recovery as many times as you want

I am a total noob and am having trouble installing CyanogenMod onto my Nexus S 4G. I barely rooted the darn thing, and I am using a guide that involves ROM Manager. It says I have to mount the SD card using ROM Manager, but I can't figure out how to. If there is a better way to install CyanogenMod, please tell me, because all the guides I have been finding are way too technical for me to understand, and I have been trying. Any help is appreciated.
Can you tell us which guide you are using and which step you are on? I think you must mean ClockworkMod not ROM Manager.

If you already have clock work then all you have to do is drag and drop cyanogen into the root of your sd card. Then flash through clock work.
ht tp://ww w.redmondpie.com/install-cyanogenmod-7.1-gingerbread-rom-on-nexus-s-4g-how-to-tutorial/
That's the guide I was using, I got stuck on step 4.
Is the rom the .zip file I downloaded from the cyanogen site, or is it inside the folder?
The rom is the zip file. Boot into recovery and select choose zip from sd and navigate to it and install it.make sure to do a back up and wipe cache, dalvic and do a factory rest before flashing the rom

Can you explain this part more? Is this the part of the guide that says "make a nandroid backup"?
1. Mount USB and drag and drop cm7 zip & Google apps into root of SD card.
2. Turn off nexus.
3. Boot into fastboot by holding volume up and then power button.
4. In fastboot go to recovery (power button is used as enter button, volume buttons represent up and down)
5. In recovery go to backup and restore and back up your current rom.
6. Go back and then wipe data factory reset and also wipe cache.
7. Go to advanced -> Wipe delvik cache.
8. Go back and then go to install zip from SD, find cm7 flash it, then flash Google apps. You can flash kernel right now if you want.
Hope this clears anything up

I got to your step 5, but when I choose Recovery, after showing the Google logo it briefly shows a box and an arrow coming out of the box and an Android logo, then the box changes to a triangle with an exclamation mark. It stayed like that so I just rebooted the phone.

That means you don't have Clockwork recovery installed. You need to download the latest Clockwork recovery image and place it in the tools folder of your Android SDK Folder(wherever you placed it). Then press shift and right click on the tools folder and select "open command prompt here". Then boot your phone into bootloader by pressing volume up and power button at the same time. Connect your phone to your computer via usb cable and in the command prompt you opened type: fastboot flash recovery name of recovery image here.img and press enter and you will see in the command prompt window it will say sending image. When it is done scroll down to recovery on your phone using the volume buttons and press power to enter. Your phone will reboot into Clockwork recovery and from there you can continue on the previous posts steps. Hope this helps. You can download the latest Clockwork by going to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078213 and clicking on the brown "CWM Recovery" under 'How to: Root the Nexus S 4G'.
well I'm pretty sure I do have clockwork because there's a folder on my phone that is called clockworkmod, and I did root the phone successfully at the very least, but I'll try putting a new one there.

Alright here is a little run down on whats going on with your ns4g, you probably already flash clockworkmod on your nexus, but what samsung did was that it will try to revert back to the stock recovery. So what you have to do is flash Clockworkmod again to make it stick. Honestly it is good that it doesn't stick because then it would be easier to unroot the phone.
So now you have 2 different options on how to flash clockworkmod. 1) you can do it through fastboot but you have to have adb set up. I'm not sure what method you used to root your phone so i am just assuming.
2) you can download rom manager and flash clockwork through there. (Honestly i haven't done it through this method so i cant tell you of the pros or cons that are attributed with this).
NOTE: If you dont have super user yet it would be a prime time to flash it once you got CWM going.
For me, I only needed to flash clock work twice through fastboot in order to make it stick.
Good luck.
The guide I originally was using for this had me using rom manager, but it kept telling me I had to mount the SD card even though it was shown up in my computer.
If I were to flash clockwork again with adb setup, how would I do that? Sorry to be so asky, I just want this process to end correctly.
You have to set up adb if you don't have it already, go to ns4g development and go to vandam's thread that has all the list of rom's and rooting guides. Check out wolverines rooting guide, he goes indepth on how to set up adb. It make take awhile to set up but learning how to work in fastboot is essential in rooting the nexus.
Good luck

Well it was confusing and I almost asked for help again, but I finally got it flashed again and now cyanogen is working. I really appreciate the help and for pointing neon the right direction. As a final note, is there anything else I should know, like updating or something, just general knowledge (basically, "now what?")?

Did you get all the Google Apps installed too? That's the only "unusual" aspect of CyanogenMod.
Yep I got the Google apps.
Congrats dude its good you got it all working, BTW when ever you switch roms like from CM7 to miui you always have to wipe data, cache, and delvik cache. Delvik cache is in the advanced tab of CWM. If your just up updating from different versions of the same rom, you just need to wipe cache and delvik cache. That's about it, the hard part is done, enjoy flashing.

Actually if you are updating from different versions of the same rom, you don't need to wipe anything, you just flash it.
I've seen instructions for installing custom ROM's where you bring up the ROM file inside Odin (PDA area),
then you place the cell in Download mode, then you hit the [Start] button.
Instead of doing this, why can't you place the ROM files onto the SD card, then use Recovery mode to install them from there?
Thanks!

I only used Odin to root my device. After setting up a custom recovery, I've downloaded all my ROMs to the SD card and flashed them from there. Since you're (hopefully making and) putting your nandroid backup on the SD card, it makes it very easy to recover from an accident.
The method I used was from a Youtube video where the guy used Odin to root, and then GooManager to install TWRP. I've got a custom ROM on my phone and haven't looked back.
Good luck and have fun,
-Jeff
you need a custom recovery, I prefer TWRP, as stated above you can get it through goomanager which is available from the play store. after installing the recovery you can download any rom you want to your pc, transfer it to your phone (either phone storage or external SD) after that go into recovery mode on the phone (hold volume UP home button and power button down at the same time, when you see the Samsung logo, let off all buttons) at this point you can find the rom you transferred, and flash, before flashing anything you will want to do a nandroid backup, then do a full wipe before flashing the rom. after the rom is installed you can go into recovery through the power menu. good luck!

So a couple of questions then:
1: You cannot install a ROM using stock recovery?
2: What's included in an nandroid backup?
I'm assuming it includes the modem/radio files, yes?

You use Odin to flash .tar files, which reverts your phone back to stock, unrooted factory condition.
Once you've rooted the phone, you use a custom recovery to install unsigned .zip files, which will generally be custom roms and/or mods.
Stock recovery will only install .zip files that are signed by the manufacturer, such as OTA updates and....not much else. If your phone is rooted, you have absolutely no use for stock recovery.
A Nandroid backup will usually include the boot image, system files, and user apps & data. I use TWRP, which also gives you the option to back up your recovery and EFS partition (telephony data). In most cases, you only need to make a backup of boot, system, and data.
Hope this helps.
