Thread for those who are actively looking at their data usage. - Xoom General

My billing/data cycle starts on the 3rd so as of today I am trying to keep track of what this thing does and when the data usage spikes.
On the 3rd according to Verizon I used ~20MB. They actually give you the option to download into a spreadsheet your data usage.
Side note: Here's an Excel formula I found handy for modifying their 0.XXXXXX GB cell into a useful numeric value cell that you can further manipulate.
You want to do =VALUE(LEFT(XX, LEN(XX)-3)) where XX is the cell value. If you're handy at all with an excel spreadsheet you will know what to do with this and how to copy it and maybe did it already yourself.
On the 4th my usage shot up to 86MB and it's interesting because usage is broken into bits. I'm pretty sure now that I was showing off a high definition youtube video while I was onsite with a customer and that alone was 40MB used up off my plan. I later went to pick up a fish tank and while I was there, showd another video for a few more megs used.
Saturday the 5th I have been pretty much around the house all day, but when I went out later that night a friend of mine watched a couple low res youtube videos. 31MB used in just a few minutes.
So far today... I have not been outside of a wifi hotspot except for midnight to 2am this morning when the device activated itself twice to presumably check mail or whatever... it used like 50 kilobytes.. negligable usage.
Please take a look at your data usage and if you don't mind keep track of what you are doing on your Xoom when you're out.
If you watch some youtube videos on your 3G... make a mental note of how many you watch and at what quality.
I think for some it will be very hard to realistically stay under 1GB a month of data usage unless they carefully plan out what content to watch or not watch. Upping this to 3GB is an option for some, but for others its a matter of convincing the budget keeper to spend more more more

There is an app for that. Vzw has an app in the market which monitors your data with widget and its for tablets

I understand that there is an app for it. What I am looking for is active discussion between a small handful of guys who are actually paying attention to it. Perhaps the title of my thread and subsequent wall of spam I posted wasn't enough indication of that.
There are 2 or 3 threads where people are like "holy crap, what is my Xoom doing" because their data usage seems to be excessive. I would like to believe that its useful to someone other than myself to read some personal experiences like "I was driving to XX place and when I watched YY videos my Xoom consumed ZZ amounts of data".
Through the course of discussing this I hope that some users might become more education on how to keep themselves out of a pinch because lets face it.. not every individual is dilligent enough to go download the app, look at the widget (which you have to do ON their 3G network by the way.. thereby consuming more data), set up usage alerts... etc. Honestly I didn't think to look for those widgets until I read forum postings.
You're more than welcome to toss up some usage stats

I used up 90% of my 5gb allocation in about 3 days. We used the wifi tether so we could use the Internet while Comcast was moving our service between houses (we moved on the 25th). This device has been a sweet dream.

Holy cow! Were you trying to be conservative at all during that time with your regular PC usage tethering through the Xoom's Wifi/3G ?

Orange TV

Hi,
Just letting you guys know that Orange TV is now available for the M5000.
Theres a link on the Orange WAP home page. Costs £10 per month and the data traffic usage doesnt come out of monthly data bundles.
Tried a couple of channels and must admit was pleased with the quality (It uses PV Player and can go full screen)....and theres loads of channels.
Only works when in 3g coverage though.
....sorry if this is old news but I only found it last week.
Matt
Just bear in mind that it's only 20 hours per month, so you can't even watch it for an hour a day!
Not that there's anything worth watching for an hour a day from the channels currently available to be honest.
Also, the 20 hours is a rough estimate based on 1gb of use, and above that 1gb it's charged at 50p per mb, so based on those figures, if you watched 21 hours, you would be billed an extra £25!
A bit pathetic to charge that much for some pretty crappy channels.
I subscribed yesterday and have had a bit of a play around with it...
TV is such a strong and incorrect word to use to describe it......
...I would be more inclined to describe it as.... very low res, jerky video that it is totally out of sync with the audio.... I wont even start about the audio quality either....
Why even put cnn as a channel if you cant even see the news tickers or text on the screen!
With all due respect its a great idea/service in theory but in practice the data transfer capabilities and/or stability of 3G isnt yet up to scratch to make this a useful/enjoyable service.
...and that is with full 3G reception in central London.
I will be unsubscribing as soon as I have an hour to waste waiting on the phone to Orange Customer support....
Its a shame that you must use 3g to access it... Surely it would have been great to allow wireless networking access to it.... Maybe then they could have had a higher res and quality version of the channels too...
Anyway... my 2 cents worth...
X.
I tried it on my Nokia N70 last year when it was launched, and I must say I was pretty impressed with the picture quality, but then the dot pitch and resolution was optimised for that, and not for a VGA display, which would probably make it so blocky it becomes unwatchable.
I think it should be free on all tariffs of £35 or more, and paid for on the lower tariffs. It would mean more people went for a higher tariff to get the value added services, rather than paying specifically for something that's crap.

HTC Evo - Two Weeks in Review

Hey Everyone,
I was asked today by a friend what my thoughts were on the Evo after two weeks of ownership, and was inspired to write up a first-hand review which I want to share with you.
What are your thoughts of the Evo after your first two weeks, what do you find to be it's strengths and weaknesses...and how would you compare it to other smart phones like the iPhone 4, Droid Incredible, and upcoming Droid X. Anyone with buyer's remorse?
Please try to keep fanboy/fangirl-ism to a minimum, if possible...as I'm really looking for unbiased feedback.
=======================
Friend's question: So how's that new phone treating you?
My thoughts:
Very good, but until it has "Froyo" 2.2 I have to bite my tongue on a final judgement.
On paper and in RL, the hardware specs are impressive.
Build quality is good (but not great) mostly due to issues I've read about with users experiencing a "glass separation" and grounding woes (resolved? as of the latest HTC firmware)... or maybe just plain separation anxiety from my G1 and a tactile keyboard...ok, bad joke. I haven't had any of the issues reported, but will say there is some minor light-leaking on the lower bezel of the phone, where the glass meets the plastic casing. Other than that, it'srock solid. No random crashes, no overheating, no dead pixels, no battery charging problems, no issues with mounting the phone to a PC or swapping the microSD card. Everything just works, as expected (which if you're shelling out 300 bucks for a phone, that's the minimum expectation). I also like the fact that there's a warranty option available for the purchase, unlike the iPhone.
The updated HTC Rosie/Sense UI is beautiful nearly flawless. Navigation is straight-forward, but I fear for a slightly older generation of users (e.g. anyone born before the 80s) it may seem too "busy" and overwhelming. HTC has done a lot to outperform Android's stock UI. Integrated multitouch (limited) for the home screen along with the Live Wallpapers integration (which are both fun and cheesy) is a pleasure to use. HTC's widgets are great (but not the best for application specific platforms like Twitter - use Seesmic instead, blows Twidroid out of the water). The HTC keyboard also blows the stock Android keyboard away.. I just wish the bloody thing integrated multi-touch interface (mostly for copy-pasting and capitalizing).
Sprint's network is impressive, but their 3G speeds seem a bit slower than my experience with T-Mobile. Until we have 4G here in FL, the jury's still out. In contrast, I also haven't had random network outages or call dropping as I was prone to with my G1 on T-Mobile. Over WiFi, YouTube and even embedded Flash videos (yes, I got the 2.1 flash pre-release) FLY like the wind and look stunning in HD. I'll also add....thanks to some savvy bargaining, my Sprint bill is 13% less than what I was paying T-Mobile. As a business, their customer service has been excellent, but it would help their sales if their sales associates had more tech knowledge. AT&T wins on that point, as their reps tend to know the iPhones inside-out, or at least talk the talk of "power users".
Camera takes great daytime photos and the recording in HD is impressive (albeit slight under-performance on frame rate capping, thanks to HTC...of course there's a hack to change that). Nighttime camera-work leaves some things to be desired (i.e. its grainy), but the built-in flash is decent and doubly effective for applications that use it as a LED flashlight.
Battery life, on the other hand, totally sucks. I'm a power user, so I frequently mass kill background apps to make phone resources available, but I still have to say there's no easy way to manage power for Android phones. I blame this on the Dalvik compiler, and I'm hoping 2.2 changes energy management....or at least gives app builders a better way to scale resource use for their applications (both background and foreground services).
Apps are still a major point of contention for me and Android...mostly because they're just not there (and are the ultimate deal breaker or maker for most Smartphone buyers). I initially blamed JAVA; but now I'm going to raise the bar and blame the often fragmented (and frustrating) Android framework and lack of developer marketing by Google AND the various carriers (which I think is just about all of 'em) selling Android-powered phones, save Verizon. You have to be a real cowboy to want to develop for Android mostly because it requires a cavalier attitude, since the code source requires a LOT of research. Apple has done a lot to enforce product standard for the iPhone apps out there, and I think it's time Google's marketplace stepped up to expect the same level of product quality. There's nothing more frustrating than downloading what one would expect to be a polished app (or even a clone for something iPhoney like Doodle jump) to find it bug ridden, unpolished or simply feel like a BETA release. This isn't to say that they all suck...but most unfortunately do. Again, hopefully the new VM will change this.
Oh, I forgot to mention Google Voice and integrated search/speech-to-text capabilities - they're amazing.
your review reads well. in the battery section, you should specify what you've tried to remedy the problem... there are tons of people, myself included, who make it through a day on heavy usage.
i have gmail push, always on data, calendar sync, and gps enabled. turned off gchat service, removed people widget, friend stream widget.
when my phone is idle i usually lost 1% every 90minute to 2 hours. and I can get 4-5 hours of heavy usage in before bar hits red.
Pardon me?!?!

Honestly muncheroo, I haven't done much by way of battery optimization but will start working out on it once I have a relative mental benchmark for battery life as of the latest update (which by the way has amped up my phone's lifespan quite a bit).

Sorry sablesurfer, no offense meant!! I actually used that anecdote after showing off my Evo to my mom and a few mature coworkers. I got the same response from everyone - "It's beautiful but has so much going on, how do you keep track of everything!?"
The irony I think, is most of the widgets are all about improving efficiency and multitasking capabilities. :]
Good write up..
I would really love to see what people define as heavy usage. I'm sorry but I'm not buying the full day on one battery with heavy usage crap.

My State of the Evo address

For starters i love this phones hardware. Almost all of the hardware specs of this phone are excellent. The 1ghz CPU by qualcom is a very good choice, but not quite a bleeding edge chip. Having a dedicated gpu would have been a better choice for the resolution and processing requirements of the other parts of the phone (gpu's can accelerate alot more than games).
512MB ram is a good choice and certainly enough for most needs. However ram is super duper cheap these days and i'd much rather have 1gb of good system ram than 1gb of extra storage space(which is what the evo gives us). the 4.3 inch screen is certainly sufficient, and in this space i dont think there really are much better panels resolution and aperture wise available.
I have certainly enjoyed playing with the 8MP camera in video and snapshot mode, but it also has its flaws. Being very sensitive to light the framerate (in video mode) can go from whats looks like(because i have no way of actually checking) lower 20's to less than 10 frames per second. Also while the 8MP sensor allows for nifty resolution it does not make for the cleanest image(in both video and snapshot mode). Due to lower quality optics being used and very little logic. I've found that flash also seems not to fire in correct sync with the (non mechanical IE FAKE)shutter of the camera sensor. Causing blurred images even with the flash on, I even attempted to circumvent this problem by manually setting the iso mode in the camera options to no avail. Also i really love the back facing camera and i would love it if i could actually use it for something.
I dont like fring its ugly and buggy, i dont like QIK. I dont know what it is, i just know i wont like it(J/K). It honestly never even occured to me that skype was not available for android yet (dont even mention that verizon peice of garbage). And it looks like we get it either until the end of the year. If even then (for video). I have had some opportunity to try out video on evo. And while some videos look good they are often not the right ratio and leave the screen largely empty. Some videos had obvious framerate & sound sync issues. Even on youtube. Let me go ahead and say i have not even played with HDMI, fm radio, or bluetooth. None of these do i really use, However i do like lots of extras and you cant go wrong with any of those. I tried only a few games out primarily raging thunder 2. I was not impressed by this games performance in the slightest. I would expect a 1ghz phone to be able to outperform atleast a Nintendo DS. I believe this part calls for a facepalm. I believe im supposed to thank HTC and their infinite wisdom for the 30FPS cap on the phone.
As for the 4G. I live in north dallas inbetween several major urban area in small residential housing area. Before signing up for my evo one quick trip to the sprint website and a little bit of address information would have me believe that im lit up like a christmas tree for miles all directions with 4G connectivity. Only after purchasing and bringing the phone home to realize i have no 4g connectivity at all do i back to the sprint website and go back to my coverage map. Yup see there i am all green, oh wait what is that? when i zoom in all the sudden the maps starts looking like swiss cheese. As i zoom all the way down my exact house do i see im not covered at all. Upon further testing i found that many areas that say they have 4G do not infact have 4G at all. After finding a 4G tower less than a mile away from my home. I drive to the tower to test my phones capability. Speedtest avarage download being 4300kbps or 430Kilobytes per second or about 4mbps. And upload averaging almost exactly 1000kbps or 100 Kilobytes per second or 1mbps. Well bellow the stated peak limit of 10mbps for downloads, and 1.8mbps peak of uploads. Mind you im sitting right beside this tower. I get much further from my home wifi. As i start driving, toward my house. I lose coverage in less than half a mile. Upon further consideration of this 4G technology i dont think its ever gonna work(right). I cant imagine them putting up enough towers to blanket a city yet alone suburbs or rural. There just is'nt enough real estate. I want to love this device, however this phone needs alot of love, and up against the onslaught on new phones just over the horizon, it needs it quick. Otherwise this could easily end up a dead end long before it ever reachs maturity. I have only owned my phone for 10 days. I will return it(if major upgrades dont happen soon) and go back to a peice of crap metroPCS phone for another six months while i wait for either this phone to get its act together or jump on one of the new LTE phones from the competition. Also i'd like to ask, what would you guys prefer a new single network connection combining all voice and data functions like the new LTE network verizon/metropcs is designing with possibly less bandwidth or a multiple network IE seperate voice and data connections with possibly more bandiwidth. Please consider all the known implications before replying. Lets keep this critiquing unbiased as possible please. If theres anything major please feel free to let me know.
And all i wanted was video conferencing.

I drove around till i got 4g signal Then meandered my way around following signal strength til i could see it. Never got full bars for 4g until i had line of sight. It was a big tower too. Still only covered about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile.

It's been mentioned by Sprint, Most Blog Sites, and Many other People. It has been shown on upload tests through SpeedTest, DSLReports, etc that its capped at 1MB or very close to it.
Please provide a screen shot of 1.7Mb/s upload as I have not seen that either and I have fast 4G where I live.

[Q] For those on the borderline, what do you want to know?

So i see alot of questions about this and that around so I think I would like help out with that. Some of us are getting the xoom at launch so those of you waiting to know something about it can post your questions here and we can answer them in this thread so you can decide if it worth it for you. So those of you those who are in between. What do you want to know about the xoom.
Im going to list them as I catch them here: * - not resolved **- resolved
*Battery life (name conditions of battery life ie: wifi/3g, brightness, background widgets/apps, etc.)
**Full HDMI out (yes)
**Visual quality of phone apps on xoom (good even if not developed honeycomb)
**SMS/Text functionality (most likely no)
**802.1x EAP support (yes)
*difficulty of battery removal (careful)
*Gallery - Quality and color banding (test gradient.zip on page 2)
*USB connectivity (access to storage and mounting)
*Web browsing (speed of browsing and ease of bookmarking)
*wifi (signal strength test around home)
*Video playback (720p and 1080p mkv)
*Wallpapers (can customize each screen or static one wallpaper)
*Charging (how fast it charges every half hour or so)
Battery life!

One of the motorola forum managers had 2 scenario tests with his xoom that could give you an idea of battery life heres his post from motorola forums
FWIW -- I don't have the final version of Xoom, but close -- I ran a little test.
I charged up the Xoom and ran "Hancock" with the volume up but using a wired headset (I'm working here). The movie is a little over 90 minutes, and at the end the battery was at 83% charge.
and
I unplugged my fully-charged Xoom at 10:30 last night, with screen off, of course. When I looked at it this morning at 7:40 the battery was at 98%, so there was very little drain. Xoom was on WiFi and I received maybe 50 email overnight.
I'd like to know the actual size battery in mAh.. iPad is 6600mAh.. I think the Galaxy Tab is 4000mAh or somewhere around that..
Battery life is a major importance.. and it's something Motorola's been very vague on.. a claim of 10 hours of nonstop video playback "sounds" good..
The Moto tech above reported 100% to 83% charge after a 95-100 minute movie.. that's a little over 1.5 hours. If the movie was almost 2 hours, their battery life claim is very accurate.. but we need more info, was Wifi/3g on? Blacklight brightness? How many apps in the background might be active at the time?

this thread is more regarding to features of the xoom, but to answer your question. the speculation is looking towards end of march or early april. theres a couple threads referencing this so im going off with has been said. it is in no way confirmed but release shouldnt be too far away since it went through the fcc a few weeks ago
This might be a dumb question, but I've been curious about full Google Navigation support. I've seen a lot about the new vector-based maps but nothing about navigation.

I want to know about the Gallery application, especially for viewing photos.
The current Gallery application on Android 2.x (up to 2.3.x) is not good when viewing image with smooth gradient color. In this case, the Gallery application will display terrible color banding.
Even though Google said the 2.3 will handle 32 bits image and such, in fact it does not.
I attached a wallpaper (test_this.png) that produce this color banding issue with my Nexus S.
UPDATED:
And also 4 more images with gradients (both 32 bits and 24 bits PNG).
Thanks
I also want to know about file access via USB connection to a laptop (or desktop computer).
I know that we cannot use the USB port to charge, but I think we can still use it to access the 32 GB internal memory.

I searched for a couple days finding the best spec versus cost for a backup phone until I save enough to get a Moto Z Play, and I think I found [possibly] the best deal available for a backup, kid's, gift, or flash/app test phone.
I know what the forum rules are on acting like a salesman so I didn't want to risk linking it, but I imagine if you're curious, you can see for yourself. It's on their website under phones.
So basically my inquiry here is as the title says. Can you find a better quality for $40, er under $50? I mean even when you tack on their smallest plan to qualify, you're basically getting an $80 [$120] phone with a free service plan.
I guess really I'm just seeing if I should actually feel as good as I do for finding it.
The price is pretty ridiculous, especially after rooting it and being able to store half of all apps externally and saving RAM with things like Greenify, I'm peaking at around 66% RAM usage and have only used 5% of an 8GB internal storage with FB, Netflix, and Kodi all installed. Plus, keeping Unified Remote's connection to my PC forced is working, both, near flawlessly and has made no noticeable is battery drainage.
Note* the donor version of greenify's experimental push override seems to have worked with FB.
