Xperia Play vs HTC Desire S (my review)
Ok so my girlfriend got a HTC Desire S yesterday so I thought it would be good to fully compare it and test it head to head against my Xperia Play!
Build Quality:
There is no denying the HTC Desire S is built very good, it feels great in your hand and fits in your pocket perfectly, the Play on the other hand feels bulky and the build quality isn't quite as good (although still very good)
Winner: HTC Desire S
Screen:
The Xperia Play has a 4" LCD screen, the HTC Desire S has a 3.7" (LCD?) screen, I hate to say it but the HTC Desire S screen blows the Plays out of the water on a grand scale
The brightness is amazing, the colors are so vibrant, everything looks so bright and crisp, holding the Play next to it makes the Plays screen look REALLY washed out, the colors look very faded and the brightness isn't anywhere near the same scale (although hopefully this is just the auto brightness that can't be turned off on the Play, this doesn't explain the poor/faded color though)
Winner: HTC Desire S
CPU, GPU & Ram:
Both devices have a 1ghz Snagdragon Processor and the Adreno 205 GPU, the Play has 512mb Ram while the Desire S has 768mb Ram giving it 256mb more than the Play.
Winner: HTC Desire S
Internal & External Storage:
The HTC Desire S has 1.1gb of internal storage and comes with an 8gb sd card, the Play has a tiny 400mb of internal storage (why SE why!?) and comes with a 8gb or 16gb sd card (mine had the 16gb card with it)
The internal storage on the HTC Desire S is excellent, you shouldn't run into any issues too quickly with filling it up, the Play on the other hand is REALLY lacking here with such a small amount of storage, 400mb just won't cut it, I have already faced a lot of issues with filling this up on my Play, in the end I rooted and altered the settings so the apps always save to sd card now, even with that I still only have around 150mb free.
Winner: HTC Desire S
Performance:
Although the HTC Desire S has the extra 256mb of ram it just doesn't perform as well as the Xperia Play, general use, apps, games, multi tasking, everything runs smoother and faster on the Xperia Play, the desire has a habit of stuttering with very small freezes.
Not sure why the desire with the same specs but more ram isn't performing as well as the Play, maybe the Play uses a faster type of ram or maybe HTC sense is slowing the desire down?
Winner: Xperia Play
Gaming:
The same can be said with gaming, the Xperia Play runs games much better than the HTC Desire, Cordy (the stunning platformer) really shows off the performance on both devices, the Play runs the game in the "HD Graphic Setting" from the menu as default and runs at a constant 30FPS with no slow downs at all,
The HTC Desire S on the other hand shows a warning when you first play the game saying the game will run best on "Simple Graphic Option" and sets this as default, I switched it to the hd setting anyway and yup, major slowdowns and stuttering running at 18-27FPS with a lot of drops.
Other games give the same result, NFS Shift, Asphalt 5, 6, Fast 5 and Angry Birds Rio, all run better on the Play although the colors looks much better on the Desire S.
Add to this the Xperia Play has a gaming pad and it really does own in the gaming department.
Winner: Xperia Play
Camera:
Both devices feature a 5 mega pixel camera, the Play uses the stock camera app and is really at a disadvantage because of it.
The HTC Desire has many features that are absent from the Play such as zoom, touch to focus, face detection and 720P Video Recording to name a few!
Both Devices take superb quality pictures, hard to tell any difference, the Desire has a better video recorder and because it has 720P means it is better quality.
Winner: HTC Desire S
Battery:
The play features a 1500mah while the Desire S has a 1450mah battery, both devices drain the battery at a fast rate while playing games or running any highly demanding apps.
Winner: Tie
SE Home vs HTC Sense:
Let's get this out the way right now, HTC Sense walks all over the buggy mess they call SE Home.
HTC Sense is full to the brim with features and customization, it runs fast and smooth, has loads of widgets, skins and even sound sets, SE Home on the other hand is horrible and has a lot of bugs, it can't even get the order of the apps right after a reboot, it refuses to acknowledge apps on the sd card for no reason but then works fine again until it decides to play up again.
SE Home lets the Play down big time, you do need to use another launcher on the Play to get the best from it.
Winner: HTC Desire S (HTC Sense)
OS & Software:
The Xperia Play runs on Android 2.3.2 while the HTC Desire S runs on Android 2.3.3, both run very well and have near on the same stock features.
The Xperia Play has a lot more content in regards to games, 7 free games, the Playstation app, the Xperia Play launcher, lots of links to more games etc, the HTC desire on the other hand has no games installed as standard and has one link which takes you to the Gameloft store to buy games.
The HTC does have a few cool little extras though, the HTC Hub, Pocket mirror and most of the standard apps (calender, alarm etc) have had a Sense makeover so look a lot better than stock.
The Play is aimed at gamers, the Desire is aimed at general everyday use, totally depends on what you want from your device!
Winner: Tie
Winner:
I hate to say it but the HTC Desire S is the better device out of the two, HTC certainly know how to make the software side of their devices shine and this is where the Xperia Play is suffering, the Play could be so much better if SE updated it with more features and if they fixed the bugs.
On the gaming side of things the Play is easily the winner outperforming the Desire on every level apart from the contrast/color, add to this the Plays gaming pad and you really do have a superb gaming device!
For me I am more than happy with my Xperia Play, I will be keeping it for now and will enjoy it for current and retro gaming, I just really hope SE improve it with some updates, the camera app needs urgent attention!
you made afew valid points there about the play
i agree the low brightness makes the screen look dull
and the stock launcher well.... thats was the 1st thing i changed when i got mine
there is a fix the the brightness now on xda
and as soon as custom roms come out that when things will really get cooking
overclocking/custom launchers maybe zoom and hd video recording
and i think that the play has dual channel memory so maybe thats why its quicker?
I have a DHD, the desire s's big brother, and there is no way the 8mp camera on the DHD is better than the 5mp camera on my play, so unless HTC has done some magic, i dont see how the desire s's 5mp camera can even compare.

All I did was take pictures of the same things in my garden in daylight using both cameras, auto and macro, I then copied to the PC and looked closely at both, the file size of the Plays images are almost half of that of the HTC's images, the quality of the both are pretty much the same though,
Maybe someone more into the camera department will be able to tell the differences better but for me (and my girlfriend) there was no difference!
P.S, the Desire HD uses a different camera lens than that in the Desire S, just checked, this could explain it.
your reference to screen may be valid in a dark room or at night
But the Play is the best screen in direct sunlight, ive owned many many many smart phones and the play is at the top of the list for day light visibility.
I think the Play is terrible in direct sunlight. The colours & glare are awful.
My old Hero was better.

The screen on the hero was awsome, and the resolution looked great for only being HVGA

The only thing I would want to compare is the gaming as thats the main reason I own a play (apart from also being a phone lol). And as you said the gaming kicks ass on the play. I dont really care about the camera I own a digi camera for that lol.
The only things I dont like about the play are the internal storage and build quality which I do find a bit poor and for that reason I now have insurance for the first time. But as its a kind of first generation in this type of dedicated gaming phone I think its a quality attempt by SE.
Overall its the best phone ever imo, the first phone I truly prefer to an iphone in tems of entertainment value and its got me really excited about future SE play phones
Just wanted to add my 2 pennies

I agree, the Play is near on impossible to see in direct sunlight, outdoors on a normal day it is JUST about readable to me, about the same as my old iphone 4 outdoors.
After testing the Desire S I was VERY tempted to send the Play back and get a Desire S as its a great little phone, but the reason I got the play was mainly for gaming and because of the gamepad.
I just wish the screen wasn't so faded and colors so poor compared to most other android phones out there.
lol that wasn't biased at all ha
i'm not sure the desire s was the best device to review with it

The only other ones I could have compared was the galaxy s, iphone 4 or desire S
I still reckon the screen looks great outside in the sun and is very visible vs most the phones out there...
this review agrees with me

The screen is really really good, in direct sunlight it’s as readable you wouldn’t believe. I can read a text message on the phone in direct sunlight while wearing sunglasses. Thats a first for me, I didn’t even get that sort of usability out of the Galaxy S with Super AMOLED

It seems that SE has started to advertise the new Arc.
It made its way into the new music video of Patricia Kazadi (she's not so popular even here in Poland, but who cares). Always nice to see SE instead of all those iPhones.
Hahaha! Yeah nice product placement.
She actually started to work hard on her celeb status in Poland
I've seen it in another video too...
here's ARC (not ARC S) featuring in David Guetta's music video "Little Bad Girl"

I think that its worth it. My friend wants to trade his Xperia play for my X10, mostly because the X10 has a better camera.
Could someone please give me some useful links to things like rooting an xperia play and how to put custom roms on it?
Search on these forums rooting xperia play and bootloader unlocking
Good deal btw your friend is a sucker
The play takes great pics
The Play's video camera isn't the best one out there, but for still photos it's great.
You're getting the better end of the deal.
I went from an 1.3ghz OCed Atrix to the XP. Huge drop in specs but I really can't tell much of a difference because the XP is so much more optimized.....and the game pad freaking rocks

Xperia play's camera is useless in the dark but imo its a decent camera with good lighting levels.

Need to respectfully disagree with you there. As a test I took a photo in an absolutely pitch-black room with no lighting whatsoever. The photo turned out reasonably well. The flash is actually quite bright on the XPlay.
The xperia play's camera takes better quality pictures than the X10 IMO, and with the 2.3.4 update it will get 720p recording.
I've got the Xperia Play now
The screen is quite scratched but when you play games you can't recognise it.
You do know that the Xperia play comes with a pre-applied screen protector?
If your screen is scratched just remove the old screen protector and stick a new one, or keep the glass screen protector free.
I upgraded from an X10. i have to say that the camera on the play is actually better, taking clearer photos. The flash on the play is way better than the one on the X10 which is useless. Camera is nowhere as good as the Arc or other phones but is good enough
The stock screen protector on the Play is the same kind that is fitted stock on the X10.
here is the link of all the features of xperia z3

If its possible then its a request from all developers please port Video Pause and resume ability from Z3 to Z2 also
this feature is in Xperia Z3 Camera, when we recording videos from its camera app its can pause and resume them.
@lagalaga. @Riyal. @olokos. @xperiaz2. @Rizal Lovins
This is probably the one thing I want from the Z3. I've wanted video pause-ability since forever.

yes i am asking for this feature also from Sony from almost one year.
I dont see why features such as this and low light ISO 12800 recording cannot be added to the Z2 line. Reverse engineered apk? if it were only that easy..

The worst thing? We had pause back on Sony Ericsson's like the w810i, at least I think that's what it was it was a long time ago haha

that would be useful video pausing. I want that for my Z2
I come from a note 3 to the z2, very disapointing the lack of some features like this, in the note y can do that why the z2 can't

I came from the Note 2 to the Z2, and I can't say the same. I hardly miss the SPen. But Sony's UI is more polished and way less cartoony. It feels and looks premium. The UI is also way more fluid than my Note 2, but I'll have to wait and see future updates to be able to same about the Z2. But my Note 2 was unusable after the latest update. Very VERY laggy. So, I decided to jump to another device and I can't say I miss anything from the Note 2 but maybe MAYBE the extra screen real estate.
wtf? Z2 doesn't has pause?!
i'm new to sony (planning to buy one)
eww i'm surprised..

only Xperia Z3 have video pause option
may be some good developers were able to port this feature for Z2 also
For 2 minutes, forget about everything and just imagine an Alien comes to Earth and asks "Hi! I want THE Smartphone with the best specs... Which one should I get?"... A Simple answer is "Xperia XZ Premium". It has the best screen, 4K HDR, Stereo Dual Speakers supporting High Def Audio, can shoot 960 fps at 720p, can shoot 4K HDR at 30 fps, IP68 water resistance, etc... Technically, it's by far the phone with the best specs.
....
And yet, the only thing that we can hear about is Samsung's Note 8 and Apple iPhone 8. And that's because of Sony's bad marketing and absent marketing strategies.
What I will try to explain below is how Sony fails miserably at marketing it's product and even in supporting them.
Btw, my previous phone was the Note 7, and i had to give it back for obvious reasons. Before that I had the xperia mini pro, and before that the xperia mini, and before that a samsung phone. So if one thing is clear, it's that I really can't care less about both companies. It's just a frustration on Sony's weak approach of marketing.
First of all, let see how Samsung handles its marketing.
------------- Samsung:
- The Note 7 exploded because they couldn't fit a Battery into the phone properly. And yet, they didn't even bother Re-branding. They just recalled, apologized and moved on. They even re-released the same phone as Note FE. And the Note 8 is the most expected phone right now. They faced a Tsunami, they didn't even flinch, they just surfed on it.
- Samsung is advertising its S8, S8 plus and Note 8 Infinity Display like they invented some kind of teleportation device. They even came up with the slogan "Unbox Your phone!" cause their latest phones have no bezels, even though they totally have bezels on the top and bottom and very little on the sides. But hey! Who cares! They somehow managed to make everyone jump on the bandwagon and love that useless overly extended display which has no use for media whatsoever.
- Next, Samsung brings a new Resolution! QHD+ Resolution which is 2960 x 1440. Yes. QHD+. And yet... THERE IS NOT EVEN ANY MEDIA FILE AT THAT RESOLUTION!!!! Not one video, not one wallpaper, nothing. There's no media for that Resolution. Even QHD is not a widely adopted resolution. 4K is by far more popular. But Samsung doesn't care. The S8 and S8 Plus show digital bezels to play any media with usual resolutions. You could fit the media to the screen but then you will lose some top and bottom pixels on your image or video. But does Samsung care? Does anyone care? Of course not. It's Marketing. "Hey! We brought more Pixels! It's QHD+". That's exactly like Apple's "Retina Display". Just name a Resolution and make it sound like you invented something new, although it's completely useless.
- Samsung bought Harman. You know the company that excels in Audio. So you'd expect that the Note 8 will come with excellent Dual Speakers for better audio experience right? Well, of course not. The Note 8 will come with the same useless speaker they use on any of their device since Samsung was founded. But instead, what they will do is make you pay more for the Note 8 cause they added earbuds. Harman earbuds. The Note 8 new feature: Harman earbuds we put next to it. It could have been worse though. They could have put the earbuds IN the Note 8 itself. Oh! They already did something like that with a Stylus.
- The S-Pen. If you like the Note, it's because of the S-Pen right? You'd think "yeah the S-Pen is awesome. Very productive tool, you can draw, etc...". Well, did you know that ALL the features of the S-Pen (like the 4096 pressures sensitivity) actually belong to the S-Pen itself? And that the Note, neither its display, has nothing to do with it? Think of it like Samsung is selling you a Stylus, but makes the Note look like a whole unit with the S-Pen just because they opened a hole inside to put the pen in it. And guess what you have less of, because of that pen? Less battery. Ask yourself this. Imagine you have a smartphone like the note, and they tell you, "hey, buy this stylus. It's useful. But we will open your phone, take some features out and put the pen inside cause we dont want you to carry it in your pocket". What would you say? But if a marketing manager elaborates the principle and put it differently, you'd say "YEAH!". (Even I did. I bought the Note 7 cause of that Pen).
And that's Samsung for you. Marketing. They are no different than Apple. They sell you yesterday's technology, and tell you that it's the new hot thing and you should buy it. If you're not a Tech enthusiast, you will fall for it easy. (Ok. They're not as bad as Apple. But still, every year they get closer and closer to Apple's marketing strategy).
Now it's time to see how Sony handle things...
----------------- Sony:
(where to start...)
- 4K HDR Display. Everywhere on the internet you will read "4K useless on a phone, you can't see the difference between a 4k and a HD display". You will read "LCD is not good for VR because of this and that". Both of these statements are false.
First let start with the 4K perceivable or not: Once you watched a 4K video on the XZ premium, you know you saw the difference. You know. Anyone that watched a video on the XZP knows. But does any other person on the planet know? Of course not. Why? Cause Sony didn't bother telling them. I mean, look at Samsung's new slogan for the Note 8: "Do bigger things". "Unbox Your Phone". So where's Sony's Slogan for the 4K Display? Where is the marketing strategy pushing the idea that 4K on a phone is not only perceivable, but it's now essential and if your phone doesn't have it, it's garbage cause you will miss all the media of the world. Even Youtube is 4K now! Well, Sony didn't bother. They just don't care. So no Slogan. Nothing. The only thing they could come up with is "4K HDR looks nice, please buy our phone".
Second, let see how the XZP does in VR and what is the fuss about LCD and VR. Samsung is pushing VR like a pregnant woman giving birth to twins. And yet, their QHD+ resolution is still weak for a VR headset. But the Xperia XZ Premium has a 4K Display. And once you try 4K VR, you understand that 4K is THE Resolution VR needs. And that rumor which says "LCD Display is no good for VR" is completely false. You understand it when you try and see it. But let say you couldn't try it to see it for yourself. Then here's a piece of information that will help you know. Pimax (which is a VR company that designs VR headsets for PC, competing with Occulus and HTC) is now releasing a VR headset with 8K resolution. The Display they use is an LCD display.
So, all these said. What has Sony have to say about that? You'd expect a Sony VR Headset and a lot of noise on that awesome 4K VR. I am sure you all tried 4K VR with a 3rd party headset right? You'd think Sony would push the XZP VR capabilities even further. Well they don't. Sony just doesn't like doing things. It's boring for them.
Maybe you may think "Yeah but Samsung has Occulus behind them". True. But I wonder what Sony has in their own ecosystem... Hmmmm... What was that thing called again? PLAYSTATION? and even Playstation VR with many VR titles???? But no. Sony wouldn't do that. It would be wrong to advertise the most capable Smartphone in the market and support it with its own ecosystem. Let 3rd party software and headsets worry about VR and all. Sony doesn't even need compliance with Google Daydream. They're fine. Leave Sony alone.
- Stereo Dual Speakers supporting High Definition Audio. Of course Sony puts only the best in its phone. As a hardware. But what about the software? I mean, if there was a volume problem with these speakers, Sony would immediately remedy that right? Right? RIGHT? Cause they support their product and care right? Naaaah. Just go to the google playstore and find some 3rd party app to increase that volume you are so fond of. Don't bother Sony!
- Sony has the best camera sensors. Even Samsung buys Sony camera sensors. And in the XZP they put an excellent Camera that can shoot 960fps at 720p. And 4k HDR at 30 fps. But what if somehow, their awesome, (no sarcasm), wide lens had such a distortion, (which is completely normal btw), that some may see it as an issue? Cause you know that a wide angle camera that tries to get anything will obviously distort the image and this must be fixed with a software right? RIGHT? I mean Sony would have thought to code a proper software for that... Right? Of course not. Forget about that, they don't even advertise there slow motion camera properly. Why would they care about that? Instead, enjoy a nice paragraph where Sony explains that this distortion is normal and acceptable in the current market. Of course writing 1 paragraph is way easier than writing codes and then updating the phone etc... Stop annoying Sony with your useless demands.
- Sony has the best possible ecosystem any phone manufacturer would dream of. Samsung's Occulus? Laught at that. Sony has PLAYSTATION! Yes. I don't know if you heard of it, but Playstation belongs to Sony. I specifically write it down, because if you know Sony only from the Xperia phones, than you may not have heard about that. You see, Samsung automatically starts the Occulus app when you put it in the GearVR which is a Samsung Headset made in collaboration with Occulus. They do it so you feel like their VR experience belongs to an ecosystem. Does Sony's Playstation, which belongs to "Sony", (no really, it does), collaborated with the Xperia department, (which also belongs to Sony), to push VR headsets on Xperia devices and completely destroy any competition because they have like all the titles they need? No. Sony doesn't care about that. They don't like to do... things. They have enough money. Stop annoying them with your nonsense childish requests.
- Forget about VR. Sony has an excellent service called Playstation Now, which streams PS3 games onto your PC. They could easily make it available on any Xperia device. How I know that? Cause a company called Liquidsky is now doing it with PC Games. Yes you can play streamed PC games on your android. And no, there's no latency. I played and finished a PS3 Sony exclusive title called "Beyond two souls" on my windows 10 laptop. Yes I streamed the game from a country that is not supported by the Playstation Now cause its too far, and played and finished the game with almost zero latency. So will Sony bring that to the XPZ or any other Xperia device? Of course not. Sony doesn't like to do... things. It's boring to them. They'd have to make an APP for that. Oh oh oh slow down. They already made an App for PC last year. It's not like they gonna make an app every year for a different device!
------------------------------------ Conclusion:
If Samsung had released a 4K Device with dual speakers, and had a department called Playstation I can't tell you what would happen to the world: Samsung would declare that they now possess the Korean government and would start to engulf neighboring countries. And no one would resist them cause everyone would be too busy playing 4K Playstation games in VR on their Note 13 devices.
Sony's marketing is so terrible and misses so many opportunities that even that Alien mentioned earlier would think that Samsung makes better phones and would opt for that S8 Plus cause it has a big display.
I am sure that there are many many so called "Logical" and "Rational" explanations why Sony fails so bad in marketing. But it doesn't matter, cause they are just failing and I don't think that Disney will come and fix their next Xperia phone for them.

I agree with this. In fact the last form of advertising that I remember seeing relating to an Xperia phone was at a Tmobile store and that was a dunk tank with a Z3 (I think). It's a shame too because Sony phones are consistently awesome.
The real problem now rearing it's ugly head is the lack of VoLTE calling and WIFI calling compatibility (US). This is a great reponse to your "Galaxy 8" statements. Why would average consumers choose a less compatible phone and what would motivate a sales associate to sell a less compatible phone.(US again) I honestly can't say that I would.
The fan fact is that Sony has the most pattents in VR technology but still haven't released any VR Headset for the XZ Premium. This is very sad because this was the very purpose of this device.
Regardless how they handle marketing I will continue to buy Sony products because there's simply no other phone that can beat Sony.
You know I find your post very special AND interesting! And I need to say that I'm a huge Xperia fan (since the Z) but I mostly agree with what you write. There are indeed some mysteries in their way of handling what they do. I feel like they have the expertise and skill -maybe the best of the world!- to manufacture top-end components and devices but once this is done they have no idea how to manage all of this. Somehow like an "autistic savant" (not sure how to make it sound like in french ) but they obviously need to hire competent poeple for after the production. I find it crazy that many people around me even don't know what Sony exactly does, let alone smartphone.. and yet for me too, they just do the best! But with something like this, the odds are good that it will be rather low succesful (I wouldn't too buy a flagship from a brand I almost only know they build cameras and TV..)
You still didn't mention some other things like dual SIM, stereo recording, camera button, quick capture (with lockscreen bypass!), noise cancelation, LDAC, DSEE HX, S-Force, PS4 remote, side fingerprint sensor, etc.. (even mirror:victory when you put the S8 vs the XZP. Then you said something pretty interesting with the VR (I actually opened the "Daydream" thread here) and I wish to know more about this, really.

lol, I completely forgot about half the features you mentioned and didn't know about the other half! That's Sony for you!
About the Daydream VR, i went to your original thread to answer you!
I've always wondered why Sony don't do any marketing for their new phones - I saw ads for the S8 and iPhone whatever everywhere but nothing for the Sony phones (at least here in Australia anyways)
Sony Mobile should takes some marketing courses at Playstation division.
@nomailx You are in here all the time complaining about Sony and misunderstanding features that this phone has. Look at all this tl;dr... why you rant to us? Go rant this to Sony in an email or something.
