Wifi+Bluetooth+4G+GPS=disaster or improvement? - Epic 4G General

Hi Folks. If anyone's interested I'm going to try a maybe dumb experiment which might help me and maybe even others.
tl;dr version: with barely any root and all 4 radios on for a change I wanna see if the Epic is actually a better phone more of the time.
Let me profile myself by saying I'm living in an area with poor Sprint coverage inside structures only within about 1.5 miles in any direction. The strange thing is that outside my house I can even just get the edge of a 4G signal, and driving about 1-2 miles in any direction improves things greatly for both voice and data. I'm just in a bad coverage area for Sprint CDMA, and actually Verizon users don't fare much better.
So I've basically reverted to RoamControl and WiFi to make my Epic tolerable inside. But now I'm going to experiment and see what happens when I ask my still-Eclair DI-18 Epic, on PRL 60676 rooted, to manage its own roaming and data. Will the phone frustrate the hell out of me for having "all systems go," or will it actually improve somehow? I never cared to find out before, but my experiment will at least help me keep track of the phone's limits and whether they get noticeably better when I finally load a new Android on here.

It'll frustrate you by running out of battery very quickly. And you can't have 4G and WiFi on at the same time - it won't allow you to.

Um.. wut?

I realized that, although so far battery performance doesn't seem any worse (that may change). I can say about the weak Sprint signal that it's shocking again just how reluctant the Epic is to giving it up and going to roam. Also surprising is how I could place calls with barely any signal, although I'd have my doubts about receiving them.
I wondered again about whether 4G will have to be manually enabled when I'm out of WF range. Also, do any of the custom ROMs allow you to have both on, or is that a hardware limitation?

What do you mean by "better phone" in your original post?
I don't think I understand what you're wanting to accomplish by having your phone constantly checking for a 4G signal when there isn't one.

Hahaha...time without signal, 91%. And yet battery like I said seems no worse than before. This is with 0-2 bars and only switching to roam with the deepest areas of the house.
I'm just doing this to get a better sense of how the phone performs in "default" both before and after any more changes. I figured keeping records of it here was just something to try.

Of course, Sprint doesn't like roaming (nor does any carrier) because it costs them a ton more for your call. So they have the threshold for switchover set well below where the service is actually functional for actual call.
Thank God for Roam Control. Now, if Greg would just make it controllable from Tasker...

Anyone care to explain this? XD
Just happened a little while ago while using an app which may or may not have asked for my location. I did mention I'm on rooted stock 2.1, yeah. (chuckle)

well well, aint that a surprise, tmobile do act fast, my internet was cut of, so im stranged to use tethering,
Well, how much data have you consumed?
presumably 5 gb?
That's bs if you pay for unlimited. In any case I think they can do a service reset it doesn't effect anything accept your connectivity and maybe I'm not sure but possibly your data speeds its not a factory reset sorry if you dont find this helpful our if you already knew about it
Anonymous
Well quite a lot, I been hugging it for some days now, I might have consumed minimum 5gigs, win7 home, music and software updates to windows. So it might be more. Also they toggle your connections after 10G of data, it may say unlimited but its on their own terms

I am sure you could call t-mobile && get that slow down lifted.. After all, they do like to kiss our.. well you know
Thats pretty crappy.they haven't done that to me though and im on my phone all day download and uploading?i wonder why
Anonymous
Willnews I went overboard haha since my computer crashed I had to install everything, after that I downloadtef a crapful of music, haha I dont want to call tmobile I have no valid legal reason to tell them lol good thing in a week the "cycle" will start again

It it's unlimited, the msg only said they will reduce the speed. They never said unlimited at full data speed. Still better than att. They no longer have unlimited.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Try to change network mode to GSM only. They throttle WCDMA (3G) data speed to 50kbps or 60kbps around like. But they don't throttle GSM/EDGE connection. It's depends on signal strength but usually you can expect 100kbps to 120kbps on EDGE network. It's not excellent, but still better
Also next month tmo will start charging fir tethering.
Over half of att smaetphone users still have unlimited data.

Why is my data speed so slow?

Im usually on wifi at home so I didnt notice how slow my speeds were. I did a test today while I was running errands and every time got a REALLY slow speed. I have the latest radio and am running cm7 nightlies. Can anyone help me figure out why things are so slow?

Did you try one of the other three?
just because your on the "highest number" one doesn't mean it's going to work the best. i'd try out the other two. The other thing to consider is if you've gone over your 5Gb data limit they will throttle you.

I will give the other two a try right now.
I am connected to wifi most the time so I HIGHLY doubt I went over my usage, I have once a few months ago when I didnt have home internet and it was WAY slower than the posted speeds. They throttle you down to like 3-4kbps. I did notice my phone was set to only operate on 2g networks but I disabled that and its still getting the same speeds.
Since it was set to 2g networks only why am I still able to see a H icon?
EDIT: Just tried all of the radios and they all give roughly the same speeds.
ANOTHER EDIT: Im now on stock radio with Royal Ginger 2.1. Speeds are: Ping:66ms Down:57kbps Up:170kbps
Your data speeds have so many variables. The biggest one I can think of would be your location. If you are in a basement, you can't expect to get good speeds on your data. I've noticed that my data speeds are fairly slow after an immediate flash. Could just be coincidence, but I'd recommend looking into all the variables.
At my house, I live in the basement. I get 1.3 megs tops down there for download speed. Out where I attend school, I get 2.7, and at times, I've gotten 4mbs. It's not so much a "flash, test for 5 minutes, flash different radio" process. Definitely requires patience.
i have this same problem! please help!

Air-rave

Just got an air-rave! Frigging sweet! My signal has sucked at my home. Hopefully this will help. Anyone else have this? If so how does it work? Really happy with how well sprints service helped us. Whatcha think?

I got one a few weeks ago. Still don't know how it's suppose to work. I followed the instructions but still get no signal. I'm gonna have to mess with it one weekend.
I have been using one for about two years. It's great. I went from no 3g and no service to very decent 3g speeds and no dropped calls.

Airave connects to your highspeed internet through router so basically your phone connects to the Sprint network and data through the internet.
I am glad that someone posted this topic because I want to ask a question. I just added my wife's best friend to my account (yes I realize that sounds bad or good depending on your point of view - ha ha), but she lives out in the boondocks and doesn't get the greatest of service (though better than she had with t-mobile). I had previously read that some people called an complained about bad service and got an air rave. I was wondering how that works out and if anyone here thinks that I will catch flak since she lives at an address which is not the one on my account?
Ouch! That's a tough one. I'm not sure how that would work. I guess call n ask. Mine works great! Set it up today n got full bars and 3g throughout the house....

supposedly the router is supposed to be plugged into the airrave.. but it limits your router speeds (if you are wireless that is, dont know about wired router).. it took my wireless speeds really low, i have heard that you can plug it into the router but i havent tried.. i actually am not using mine right now, because sprint is having some major network issues where i am, and this actually just magnified them in my house.. and everytime i would leave my house it would drop my call, or lock my phone.. which was a major pain, once they get the towers here fixed i am going to try it again, hooked from my wireless router..

Don't feel bad. Mine isn't always much better. I am normally on wifi when I need to do web surfing or anything major. I see you are in Dallas which I guess I could understand the speeds because of major usage. I live in a small city and still get somewhat pathetic times, usually just a little bit faster than dialup.

Ouch. I have WiFi too, but it's also an unreliable POS because it drops out every ten minutes. I'm thinking of switching, but the only other carrier that has a decent signal is Verizon, but 5GBs of data is a killer. I often pass 6GBs on my EVO.

Is the wifi a hotspot problem or a phone problem? If it is a hotspot problem then I would flash an updated firmware for it. I had a linksys with that problem and the firmware fixed it. You could also try changing the wireless channel in the routers configuration.
It's a Sprint problem.

High MS/Ping

I can get 20MBPS down and 15 MBPS uploads on this phone, but my MS is around 110.
Does anyone know of any tweaks or changes I can make to improve the MS/ping?
Can't different radio/modem drivers change things? What about tweaks? For example, on Windows running Leatrix Latency Fix lowers latency a TON! Is there anything like this for a android phone? (Galaxy S3 - Verizon)
I have Verizon's LTE 4G service.
So shouldn't I be able to get around 20-50MS?
Any ideas?
Thanks!
unless you are using the phone for tethering for gaming, just curious, why would a difference in ping of 50ms matter?? especially when your getting download speeds like that. again, just curious.

I use it for the occasional gaming sessions.
I get around 110 MS, but my speeds are incredible.
I am hoping to find a way to lower the MS since gaming doesn't use that much bandwidth anyways.
I would assume for most Cellular based networks that 100ms ping will be typical. I don't think I've ever seen much better than that in general, however, that being said. If there is a proxy built into your network configuration (like Sprint has) this could easily be impacting your ping/latency.

right, ping times have a huge impact on online gaming.
but as stated 100ms ping times on mobile networks are kinda typical. even though LTE is supposed to bring lower ping times
So is there anything that can be done at all? Changing the radio?
my ping is a little bit lower than yours also on verizon maybe your father from the tower than I am

ping just like all other speed ratings are influenced by many diff things. Signal speed, amount of traffic, the list goes on.
also keep in mind that when you look up specs for a specific type of technology, whether it be 3g, LTE, Wimax, whatever it may be, that the listed speeds are THEORETICAL.
I wonder if updating the attenna/modem firmware would help?
