Dont forget Meego and Ubuntu =D (even though Meego has yet to be officially released)
No way!! I'm so jealous right now!!!
Sent from my Galaxy Tab using XDA App
and i feel ashamed since ours called tab and honeycomb supposed to be for tab but we didnt get any
hiks
Are the chances slim on future android updates being ported to the tab? I honestly dont give a hoot about the honeycomb UI or anything.
Just would like some of the neat features that come out in the new updates. Like native SIP support, etc.
I really wish we would stop getting these threads!
The fact that A.N.Other device has a half-baked Honeycomb port that mostly doesn't work isn't really of any interest bar intellectual curiosity. Unless a device ships that has Honeycomb, and very similar hardware to the Tab, there is little point attempting to port a ROM to the Tab because it simply won't work well enough to be a daily driver.
We won't see proper working Honeycomb ROMs for non-Honeycomb devices until the source code for Honeycomb drops into AOSP. I would imagine we'd see a concerted development effort on the Tab at that point.

Dave

I'm a Palm Pre user and in love with WebOS, but as we all know Palm is dying and probably won't last through the year. I'm awaiting the EVO but I'm curious to know if it'll be possible to put WebOS on it. I'm not looking to start a WebOS/Android flame-war, I've just gotten used to WebOS in the past year. What do you guys think, is it do-able/worth the time?
Regardless, I'll probably upgrade to the EVO if the price is right
Thanks!
Is it possible? Probably.. Will it happen? Probably not.
There's already a discussion/wish list for WinMo 6.5 to be ported to the Evo, and even that may be a longshot.
But I'd say that has a much better chance of happening than WebOS... But then, anything is possible!
I was thinking that might happen. In that case, if not a complete port of WebOS is it possible to simulate/emulate the "card" system on Android? That's really my favorite part of the OS and what sets it apart from Android. Honestly, If someone could combine both OS's we'd have one hell of a phone.
Thanks!
TaskOS is about as good as you're going to get at the moment, no previews, just icons for running processes, not as flashy as webOS, but the basic functionality is technically there.
still waiting on the announcement of google buying palm for the acquisition of patents to multi-touch that palm owns the rights to.
Along with that would be webOS... give it some time, their stocks are tanking, another quarter of record losses will put them on the table to be bought up.

Well instead of waiting for someone else to do it, what would I need to do to try to port the OS? Are there any tutorials or instructions available for this sort of thing? Is it standard or does the process vary by phone? I'd love to try it, even try to intergrate some Android functionality -- I think if WebOS and Android were combined it would make the perfect phone OS.
At the very least, would it be possibe to drop the Sense UI from the EVO and just run 2.1?

webOS isn't open source so you will not be able to compile it.
The open souce part of webOS would be usefull in porting android to a palm phone but not the other way around sadly.

the 2.1 that the nexus one runs is AOSP http://source.android.com/ and a custom built launcher for the nexus (launcher2.apk) which is popular here on xda and is easily obtainable.
These will all come in good time after it's released and rooted and custom roms start popping up. One thing you can hope for as I wish the phone to be successful and bring much attention to wimax in general is that AOSP and cyanogen mods http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ gets ported to the EVO. It's the cleanest version of android without all the crapware that generally comes with feature phones and flagship phones.
Cyanogen mods is where's it's at in the android hacking community. Suggestion if you really get into hacking android, start with AOSP and cyanogen port to the EVO. It will teach you alot about the android OS without all the added htc jazz.
Hope for a quick release of the EVO kernel's source though... once you have that then you can get to work. Without that don't expect much success.
Thanks for the advice! I'll start looking into them as EVO day gets closer. Are there any good tutorials for getting into Android modding/writing apps? Good ones though, not just any result from a google search.

like writing apps for anroid? or porting andorid OS? I'm not a programmer, don't know nothing about writing apps, so someone else will have to chime in there.
As far as porting, I do not know of any point and click guides for porting, this is the documented process for the Odroid, it should be relevant to your endeavor. They wrote a step by step for compiling android on Odroid, they do however use Uboot I'm not 100% certian what HTC devices use for their bootstrap.

Hopefully that helps some. Good luck.
EDIT: found this for building for the G1

I was just browsing the dutch tweakers.net site and saw the article below.
Its telling about a CWM 3 ROM Honeycomb for the Desire HD phone.
For now they still have some hardware problems due to the lack of good drivers.
Now the HD2 community have way better devs with much more knownledge. So I was wondering if someone was already aware of or already busy with this. I and I think so much others would love to see HoneyComby running on our HD2.

Would be nice, really, why not.. but did you see how f***ed up the screen layout looks?
Ya we need that!!!!
we have to wait...
We do have much better devs and even a build with honeycomb themes and skins, but I still want one build that I don't have any complaints about. There's always one thing, ya know?
MAy I ask a simple question...why? Honeycomb is going to be tablet based. Watching the video, he even says practically nothing works. The touchscreen is barely functional, the buttons don't work...honeycomb is going to be pointless for a phone..
We have WP7 and Ubuntu, so why it is pointless and why they shouldn't be able to do it HD2 is always good for another OS
I would love Honeycomb on my HD2!
Android 2.4
I heard rumors about new smartphones (like the Xperia Arc) will have Android 2.4 which is based on Honeycomb for tablets.

Honey Monster
What is Honeycomb, I've heard (read) a few posts refering to this, but the only Literature I can find refers to Android 3.0 which is supposedly Tablet only. Can someone show me the way to enlightenment so I too may share the dream. I would love to add more OS to the seemingly endless capabilities of my HD2.
It is meant for tablet only. However some have modified the roms to run on Phones.
However, apparently the current phone Honeycomb ROMS are flakey to say the least.
I am so used to a stable working gingerbread I'd be hesitant to jump ship until its been through a few iterations on the HD2

Well my interest would simply be for trying it out for fun and curiosity more then as a daily OS.
Its primerily for tablets but would be nice to try on our HD2 screens, bit like the ubuntu UI.
So, any plans to bring WebOS to the HD2, now that it's opensource?
webOS is a good OS, but i hope devs will continue on meego first
What has WebOS got to do with Ubuntu?
What has WebOS got to do with Android or WM?)
WebOS isn't yet open-sourced, HP just said it will do that. No sources are available as of now, and it's silly to ask when it'll be ported to HD2 if we even don't know when sources will be available. But, it might me easier to port than meego, as meego's most interesting version (from nokia n9) is closed-source, and opensource meego is, according to devs, not much usable.

This one looks like kernel (and possibly some other GPL-ed components) sources. And it is there probably since a long time. So no, WebOS isn't open source yet.
Sorry for posting the question here. I thought , as nobody really looks at the meego board anymore, I should ask it here as the guys'n'gals that are into porting Ubuntu to the HD2 are a little more hardcore and thus apt to give an honest perspective on whether or not this could happen. I read on the Verge that someone had it running on the Evo 3D so maybe it isn't that far fetched.
As I have understood some of the UI/UX stuff is not open source yet.
We shall come back to this discussion when it's time for that.
WebOS? I'm still waitng for further development of Ubuntu! Sound? Calls? Magldr?
Bumping for interest and the sake of prosperity for our mighty HD2...
Face it Meego is going nowhere slow, if anywhere at all... With the announcements of nokia going to wp. Ubuntu is making very small but slow baby steps...
So why not stir up a craze that'd baffle the internet media once again with the viral power of what the HD2 can do?
It's been ported to many other HTC devices so why not our HD2? We can't just let it die with millions of android and wp builds and lack of interest in other projects such as linux and meego, so I only see one other hurdle to jump that being WebOS.
Well, we'd have to find someone, who could port it... If I wasn't a total failure when it comes to programming and stuff, maybe I could do it :x
The difference between Android and other OSes is Android is popular and it's rather easy to cook a ROM... But here, we'd have to work from scratch. And nobody wants that. Shame on you, community, shame!
The only thing I see possibly coming next for the HD2 is WP8 (Maybe, if it's possible or at WP7.8) I rather hate WP and still love my huge variety of apps and customability with WM... I'm doing Win95 on it, Boxmax SD XDAndroid Sense and Ubuntu...
I don't see why or how it'd be so hard if so many other HTC's have it running already, get the closest build with matching spec's between the HTC HD2 and whatever HTC is remotely similar to our in hardware, edit it for Android maybe and change the drivers of the HTC (In question) to the HTC HD2 in code by similarity of Android builds for HD2. On a side note, I read that the HTC Evo 4G is the same phone as the HD2 on XDA, so if we could find a WebOS Build for that we'd be off to a good start. Then onto the debugging and next step is glory.
If I knew anything about coding and cooking I'd give it a whack, but I don't know much about it.
+1 on WebOS on the HD2...
I have it on the Touchpad and I love it!

Windows 8 is Windows 7 and we did that already, we'd just be spinning our wheels or going backwards then instead of moving forward with bootable os'es.
If you want Windows 8 so bad on your HD2 hunt around for a 7.8 rom, closest you'll prolly get. Anyways you could get in a whole lot more trouble cooking an OS/Rom onto an unsupported phone that hasn't even been released yet to normal consumer users yet.
WebOS would be great those who aren't ready for Android or don't want it and those who don't like WP, but desire something other than WinMo 6.5.
WebOS is dead...
Still would love to see a new OS once in a while. +1 for WebOS, +1 for MeeGo, +1 for Firefox OS (or whatsisname)
Ahoy mateys. I've been a longtime Android user (October 2009) and have never been much for running the stock OS on my devices.
Currently I've been running CM7 and loving it on the KF. Been keeping tabs on the ICS port over, just waiting for the sound issues to be hammered out as I use the device mostly for watching videos via RockPlayer.
Lately I've been thinking about trying to port over Honeycomb to the KF, as it might be simpler given that it's been around longer. I know that it's somewhat futile given the state of the 3.0 kernel being needed for HW acceleration. But it seems like it could be worthwhile just to test it and see what might happen. Give it more tablety goodness if anything!
I'm a programmer by trade and am majoring in CS. Not much dev experience on Android aside from writing games. But I've built Gentoo for my machines, so I've got some kernel knowledge. What do you guys think?

Personally, I think it's a good idea, and that you should do it. You'll probably get a lot of people saying there's no point cause ICS is what honeycomb should've been. I've never used honeycomb before, so I don't know how different it is from ICS but I'm sure there are some.
I think you should do it to give this device and its users another ROM choice, with a different android version. Or even just for the fact that you might want to use it, do it for yourself and post it here just to see if people want it. I'd try it out, even if ICS is out and stable haha

Huh?
Why would you encourage someone to work on something when you yourself don't know what the differences are between them??
ICS is Honeycomb just taking to what was its planned completion. With many Honeycomb devices moving to ICS I don't see the point.
That would be doing a lot of work, just to end up with an in between OS with all the new support going to ICS which is what everyone that can get it wants.
Also, for someone with no Android programming experience, you most likely would be a lot better of working with apps before tackling a whole OS.

I'd like to check it out. It's not like I'm telling him that he needs to do this, he asked what people thought of the idea because he was interested in doing it, and I voiced my opinion.
Though I do agree that it might be easier to work with apps and then maybe work on a ROM, but hey, if he's willing to attempt it and learn how everything works, why stop him? The more devs, the merrier lol

Yea, that is, AFAIK, why there was never a CM8. I don't think it would be worth OP's time to try to reverse-engineer a Honeycomb tablet and shoehorning it into the KF.
However, the OP might want to donate some of their time to the ICS port

Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
Hit up this Google announcement, they did indeed release the source.
This release includes the full history of the Android source code
tree, which naturally includes all the source code for the Honeycomb
releases. However, since Honeycomb was a little incomplete, we want
everyone to focus on Ice Cream Sandwich. So, we haven't created any
tags that correspond to the Honeycomb releases (even though the
changes are present in the history.)

The only thing that I really want to know is if there is a significant driver difference between ICS and Honeycomb. If there is, then there is a reason to try to port 3.0 over because it would have more driver support. There are 3.0 devices out in the wild. If there isn't a driver difference between 3.0 and 4.0, then it's futile and all efforts should be spent on 4.0.

Indeed.
And when they released the source for ICS, they elaborated on why they included Honeycomb in the Source tree: To essentially display the hacks they were forced to use to push Honeycomb to market. Honeycomb was never AOSP'd because it wasn't reliable for wider use.
Based upon the fact that Google was basically too ashamed to release Honeycomb to AOSP, I don't think it would make much sense to target a broken platform (Honeycomb).
IMO, if you're going to spend time trying to work on getting a more tablet-oriented version of Android running, it's probably going to be *easier* to work with ICS than Honeycomb. Moreover your contributions could assist the greater KF community in getting a stable base of ICS for all.
