I'm a Palm Pre user and in love with WebOS, but as we all know Palm is dying and probably won't last through the year. I'm awaiting the EVO but I'm curious to know if it'll be possible to put WebOS on it. I'm not looking to start a WebOS/Android flame-war, I've just gotten used to WebOS in the past year. What do you guys think, is it do-able/worth the time?
Regardless, I'll probably upgrade to the EVO if the price is right
Thanks!
Is it possible? Probably.. Will it happen? Probably not.
There's already a discussion/wish list for WinMo 6.5 to be ported to the Evo, and even that may be a longshot.
But I'd say that has a much better chance of happening than WebOS... But then, anything is possible!
I was thinking that might happen. In that case, if not a complete port of WebOS is it possible to simulate/emulate the "card" system on Android? That's really my favorite part of the OS and what sets it apart from Android. Honestly, If someone could combine both OS's we'd have one hell of a phone.
Thanks!
TaskOS is about as good as you're going to get at the moment, no previews, just icons for running processes, not as flashy as webOS, but the basic functionality is technically there.
still waiting on the announcement of google buying palm for the acquisition of patents to multi-touch that palm owns the rights to.
Along with that would be webOS... give it some time, their stocks are tanking, another quarter of record losses will put them on the table to be bought up.
http://www.google.com/finance?chdnp...5&chls=IntervalBasedLine&q=NASDAQ:PALM&ntsp=0
Well instead of waiting for someone else to do it, what would I need to do to try to port the OS? Are there any tutorials or instructions available for this sort of thing? Is it standard or does the process vary by phone? I'd love to try it, even try to intergrate some Android functionality -- I think if WebOS and Android were combined it would make the perfect phone OS.
At the very least, would it be possibe to drop the Sense UI from the EVO and just run 2.1?

webOS isn't open source so you will not be able to compile it.
The open souce part of webOS would be usefull in porting android to a palm phone but not the other way around sadly.

the 2.1 that the nexus one runs is AOSP http://source.android.com/ and a custom built launcher for the nexus (launcher2.apk) which is popular here on xda and is easily obtainable.
These will all come in good time after it's released and rooted and custom roms start popping up. One thing you can hope for as I wish the phone to be successful and bring much attention to wimax in general is that AOSP and cyanogen mods http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ gets ported to the EVO. It's the cleanest version of android without all the crapware that generally comes with feature phones and flagship phones.
Cyanogen mods is where's it's at in the android hacking community. Suggestion if you really get into hacking android, start with AOSP and cyanogen port to the EVO. It will teach you alot about the android OS without all the added htc jazz.
Hope for a quick release of the EVO kernel's source though... once you have that then you can get to work. Without that don't expect much success.
Thanks for the advice! I'll start looking into them as EVO day gets closer. Are there any good tutorials for getting into Android modding/writing apps? Good ones though, not just any result from a google search.

like writing apps for anroid? or porting andorid OS? I'm not a programmer, don't know nothing about writing apps, so someone else will have to chime in there.
As far as porting, I do not know of any point and click guides for porting, this is the documented process for the Odroid, it should be relevant to your endeavor. They wrote a step by step for compiling android on Odroid, they do however use Uboot I'm not 100% certian what HTC devices use for their bootstrap.

Hopefully that helps some. Good luck.

Hello, so after seeing the reviews and videos of the much anticipated "Nexus One" phone or should I say "BEAST" of a phone we as G1 or Dream users are left to wonder, What do Android and HTC have for us in the future do they think about us? It seems that with better and faster more agile processors being released to such phones like the Nexus, future ROMs or mods will be too much for our limited G1's. It used to be if you wanted to run customized Roms then only you decided wether "Hard Soft SPL" "partitioning or not partitioning" and etc, now it seem that will be the only way to run these sick out of this world roms in the coming days, in the future of Android. Android 2.1 makes me think of the possibilities of technology in our century but also of the budget of our pocket money between deciding necessity or commodity. I saw a developer asking for help or donations to help him get a phone for test. I for one woul love to be able to donate but as it is economy status is "Force Close" in Androids Terms. Please comment on this if you'd like, Just a thought.
Everyone running CM could probably donate $0.50 and it would be enough to get him a Nexus One.
The only thing that isn't future proof with the DREAM is the douchebags at HTC failing to provide required source or at LEAST give us new proprietary binaries for our hardware.
The device doesn't have to be super duper newest latest greatest thing to run a new set of software. Just because GN1 happens to have the equivalent of an AMD Radeon R600 GPU (yes, it is even an AMD GPU built on that same architecture) doesn't mean that what Dream has can't chug through the work! We *have* a 3D GPU to handle the required visual effects. Maybe not as smooth, but it WILL DO IT! Compiz runs at 1600x1200 great on a crappy Intel GPU, which is architecturally INFERIOR to the GPU in the GN1!!! And Compiz does the same kind of effects! But we only need to worry about 320x480.
Android has and does run on a retardedly out of date Palm Treo 650. Not so good, but just to note, the difference between a Treo 650 and an HTC Dream is MUCH MUCH greater than the difference between an HTC DREAM and a GN1!
IT CAN BE DONE.
It HAS been done.
But the problem is with HTC! They don't have the same kind of respect for open source as AMD has (providing all required programming documentation, and quite a bit of labor, for open source drivers for GPUs up to and including R800).
The solution:
We need to reverse engineer (parts of) the proprietary binaries! And starting with the parts needed for the CAMERA.
We could possibly make this part functional by writing something as simple as a wrapper library to adapt the OLD camera library to meet the requirements of the NEW AOSP.
The compromise:
Maybe not all of the advanced coolness will work out, but that is the great thing about source code... it may not be necessary! Some stuff can be dumbed down to work.

How's that going to help with DREAM?
.50 cents?
If everyone gave Steve a penny then he could buy 2 Nexus Ones and a new snowboard. Everyone that uses CM, parts of CM, Recovery Image??? That has got to be at this point the Majority of Dream\Magic users. I wish there was a way to count.
Donate to Steve if you use anything of his. He is a great help to the community.

Guess we make the future.
With the source for the basic android freely available, it's up to Dream / G1 users to write their own future after the first 2 years are up.
If you're not a developer, then maybe this would be worth learning to do.....if not for this phone, then for your next one.
I'm thinking that in the 21st century, the truly free person will be able to grow their own food, build their own house...and write their own software.
At this point, not being able to write software is beginning to feel like not being able to read and write. Always relying on someone else to do it for you....and having NO CLUE if you can't do it for yourself. I don't like that feeling. I've started learning how to program: C / C++ and Java. Don't want to be useless or dependent.

Hey all: what happens when you put the obsolete camera binary in a 2.0 image? Is it an unknown symbol error? If it is, then it might be easier to deal with than the general assumption!
Cyanogen already has the nexus one. he said hes not totally dropping support for g1/32B but I would expect the frequency of his updates will go down.
My one huge question in regards to the N1...
How is the battery?
Because the G1 is a wonderful phone... when you can use it.
Anyone have any idea how the N1's battery compares to G1 and iPhone?

Coming from the g1 to nexus one as far as battery life is concerned is like night and day imo. When i wiped my phone on g1 i reinstalled all my apps i use, 96 total in market and on sdcard and had less than 40% battery left. I did the same with the nexus one to test the battery and when i was done it was down to 87%

See what does it tell you about the importance of battery life... that I see the Nexus One with all its shiny-ness and I think I'd like one... but not until hearing this comparison do I feel like "OMG NEED ONE NOW GIMME GIMME GIMME!"?
Haha..... G1's battery was its major weakness. I'd love to have a very similar phone with a GOOD battery.
I saw someone say that Nexus one wasn't able to sync the Calendar. Is this true? It may have just been a misleading statement... and I'm hoping so because I can't imagine Google making a newer, better phone that can't do a simple thing like keep your Gcalendar like G1 can.
Can you get all the same apps on Nexus one since it's Android?

My N1 can sync with calendar no problems. Some apps you cannot use yet because they do not support the newer Android 2.1 OS. Most apps have no problem with it. Thsoe that dont work will no doubt be updated by the developers once the Android 2.1 SDK will be released.
Yeah... I'm gonna want one. I will not get one until May more than likely because my contract with Tmobile won't run out til then but... that'd be alright. It gives me time to save up for it.
I wonder if you can get the n1 for contract price with Tmobile if you just sign upf or their $40/month unlimited web service.
Anyone else heard of this: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google Mobile/thread?tid=7154dabda82d872e&hl=en ?
Sounds like win to me...
Does anyone no if the apps on the Nexus one save to sd now?
no they do not. Google has confirmed though that in a future update they will.
Hey all,
Im quite new and I was wondering if someone knows if there still is a progress of the android port to the HD2.
I've searched myselfs lots of times but I didnt find anything except in the [CLOSED] ANDROID/MAEMO/LINUX on HD2 [NO MORE ACTIVE!!] thread (CANT URL THIS IM NEW!!!)and its closed...
So my question was... Is there still a progress going on? and how far is the progress? Please reply.

They're still working on getting Linux on there and from there Android will go on. It's going to take a while (many months).

Yeah, there's no way to positively say how long it will be or even if it will ever be done.... right now they are stuck on some kernel issues that they have yet to figure out. They haven't made any more progress for a couple weeks, I think. But I'm remaining hopeful.... I think things will work out eventually. I'm in no rush for Android.

Am not expert when it comes to this but am guessing things might get a little better when the evo comes out as they have both got simmiler hard ware so they might be able to use the drivers etc.

The drivers aren't the main issues.... they already have a lot of the drivers. The main thing they were hoping to get from the evo is the touchscreen... but it uses a different touch sensor than the HD2, so probably no luck there. The evo might help a little, but probably not any more than the nexus one did. It's just gonna take time to work out the kernel issues.
With so many android phones coming out with specs similar or even better than the HD2, this is a futile attempt.

This is the worst kind of news... I mean, baby steps are fine, but no progress makes me worry.
... not wishing to bash the people who are working on this, just stating my worries here.
BTW, I'm sort of amazed that hardware manufacturers would rather side with software developers rather than the community. IE: Throw down the specifications and then porting one phone OS to another phone won't be such a problem, right? Instead, they keep the specs hidden and only one software company gets them (in this case MS). If software could be changed, it would force the developers to put some more effort into it.
Alternatively... are there any phones with Android and Snapdragon-like CPUs coming out sometimes soon? I bet that'd help.

Why is it a futile attempt? It was known from the start that there will be just as good or better android phones by the time it was finished. Thats how it was for all the android ports to WinMo devices in the past. I dont want to use android full time... anyone who does should have gotten an android device instead of a WinMo device. I want to use my WinMo most of the time, but have the ability to boot into android on the same phone and use that if I want to. Android or Linux ports were never being developed to completely replace WinMo... just get an android phone if you want that.

shoot, the only reason I want Android is for the apps. I could care less if the radio worked correctly. a phone is a phone. The apps and hardware is what makes it stand out and we got some bad ass hardware.
I know this may sound like a stupid question but since I saw this

and I've always liked the WebOS platform I thought that it must be possible considering the HD2's much superior specs 600mhz vs 1ghz, ect. The WebOS platform still has the best games of any other platform (apart from the iphone) and it would be great to be able to play them on some decent hardware. I know this might not be possible but if they put it on the incredible then it might?
Please give your thoughts, I'm still looking forward to the Android port aswell but from experience using android on my Diamond and on friend's Android phones games weren't very impressive and the pre's are!
If any developers can give their thoughts it would be much appreciated.
would be nice if we could run it but i doubt it will happen

yeah i could do with being a bit more patient, also thought I'd try and keep it floating. Although I'm not going to dogmatically keep it high. If only I had the time to learn and do it myself- I love what people do on here.
Does anyone here think it possible, or perhaps even worth developing a windows MOBILE 7 rom for the HD2? Perhaps based on windows embedded mobile? Even better, does anyone care?
After seeing the Android rom working for about 5 minutes I'm more excited for that than Win7.
I wouldn't doubt if there are people making a Win7 ROM for the HD2.
Am I the only one who thinks that Winmo 6.5 Energy + Modded manila > Android ? Energy Winmo just looks and feels better... Androis is overhyped, but I may need to play with it a bit more.

I was with Android from 1.0 to 1.5 to 1.6 to 2.1 on my g1 and having switched to WinMo I do not want to go back. I am not intetested in Android or Phone 7 for my Hd2.
I have to agree with freeincolorado and silencer, android just doesn't cut the mustard. I finally loaded it on my TP2 and have been playing with it all weekend, and while there's a few things about it that I wish winmo had, I was still very relieved when popped my sim back in my HD2 this afternoon.
As for the original topic of this post, I feel extrememly confident that someone will try to to get wp7 working on the HD2, if only for the accomplishment. Even if it's never tried with any other existing phone, the HD2's hardware should certainly be capable, if the drivers etc can be made to work with it.
I like both OS of android and win mo. Both are open source and highly customizable. I just preordered the T-Mobile Vibrant but will be keeping my HD2 for work and will end up flashing some cool new roms on it.
I've been sticking with android because unlike Win Mo 6.5x, it's not a dying platform. It's completely on the rise with the upcoming Froyo and Gingerbread updates. Google has also promised even more updates in the future. I see LOADS of potential. The Android market is constantly growing along with XDA development e.g., CyanogenMod, etc..
But don't get me wrong I love Win Mo. It's by far and truely open source vs. android. I was surprised that I can already do things on my stock HD2 that a stock and unrooted android device can't (saving apps to sd, overclock the cpu, playing Flash etc). But with these forthcoming android OS updates, these features will finally be included.

Well we got great devs here on our side so were gonna be just fine. I see a modified Win 6.75 coming out once WP7 is out. Taking key features and benefits from WP7 and merging them into Win6.5. Hell I'm running Kumars Classic rom and haven't had to reboot in like 10 days now. Then I see dual boot with an android port that works good but has a few bugs. Then I dream of possibly WINXP or a good UBUNTU running as a 3rd or dare it 4th os. With all the tablets coming out we may have many more OS options and choices floating around.
winmo 6.5 crushes android 1.6 imo...I Had a g1 running 1.6 and absolutely loved it, great device and great os..i use winmo 6.1 on a motorola mc55 for work so i thought i would hate the hd2 but compared to the motorola cliq which was my only android "upgrade" option from tmous at the time, the hd2 ran circles so I went with it and got the xt for the wife to compare...no contest hd2 ftw...she's still waiting for 2.1, moto delayed it again she's still at 1.5! haha . I do miss some android features but i just look at that huge screen and forget all about it...
i realize that many people want windows phone 7 for hd2, but this thread is really about windows mobile 7. I'm thinking photon. do you think thats possible?

First off - Windows Mobile is NOT open source.
As for WM7 - I'm sure it will be ported to the HD2. The real question is will the GPS, bluetooth, and camera work with it properly - which is my complaint about Android. If those 3 things don't also work along with everything else (I *suppose* I could live without the FM radio) - then it's pointless as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah i'm hoping he meant the platform is more open, not open source. Quite a difference there.
As far as platforms being open, Android and WinMo are probably on even playing fields. But WinMo probably has more seasoned developers/hackers that know a lot of the tricks with the OS
And actually WinMo may be more open as far as user rights, because google does have the ability to withdraw an app from their store and uninstall it from users handhelds remotely. I don't think MS has that ability from their app store, and they most certainly don't have that ability to uninstall apps loaded from downloaded cabs
Google has already done this once http://www.dailytech.com/Google+Use...+Removal+Tech+for+First+Time/article18843.htm Though it does seem legitimate to protect the users. whats to stop some app, say like DeCSS for decrypting DVDs being deemed illegal, and then google being forced to remove something due to a lawsuit, not because it is in any way is dangerous to a user.
It really rubs me the wrong way for a 3rd party to be able to uninstall and maybe even possibly remotely install code onto a piece of hardware that i OWN!

i remember reading that on engadget. google *seems* to be acting in good faith to protect themselves from liability from apps that would violate certain copyright infringements and the like. but i just hope they would use this feature to get rid of all the trashy porn searching programs on the market. steve jobs wasn't joking when he made a comment about that.

what right do you or big steve or the chocolate factory have to decide what someone else can or can't search for? who defines "trashy porn"?
first step towards a fascist totalitarian state is controlling the populace's reading/viewing material.
first they came for the pornographers, and no one spoke up, because we werent pornographers
then they came for the app devs they didn't like, still no one spoke, because we arent devs
next they took control of the adding/removing of apps on devices they didn't own, and still we were silent,
when they come for us, who is left to speak out?

practically every horror story in history can be seen as acting 'in good faith' when viewed from teh correct (incorrect?) stand point. Good faith is no measure of goodness.
[mod-break] The rest of this post removed, sorry but this has no place here.

its also my right to protect my kids who have droid phones from seeing those types of programs.google should at least have the devs place an "18 and up" disclaimer for these apps. i wasn't too happy to see my lil nephew dl and use one of these apps.
yea, but what does any of this have to do with windows mobile 7 (photon)?
:confused

Does anyone here think it possible, or perhaps even worth developing a windows MOBILE 7 rom for the HD2? Perhaps based on windows embedded mobile? Even better, does anyone care?

What do you think this would gain you vs. 6.5?
Perhaps more enjoyment of a longer lasting device?
....and FUN! But just imagine, working really hard to create something that no one gives a rats butt about. Thats why I posed the question, would it be interesting, would anyone even care?
It seems there's been little interest in previous mentions of WebOS on the HD2, and it's not gone anywhere. I saw that there is development of WebOS for the Hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822401
I wondered if it would be possible to use this development to port to the HD2 as we already have the android builds running well? Correct me if I'm wrong- i know nothing about developing, I just loved the Pre until I got close to the hardware!
Someone posted earlier today in IRC the root.img and the source code for that. I'm sure Mdeejay could do something with it.
ill eat my own **** if this phone can boot into winmo/wp7/android/ubuntu/ and webos lmaoo jk about the eating part haha

Most probably you will sir! You can have as many os as you want and it's possible!
I loved WebOS. Just always wished it was on bigger hardware like our HD2. I would give my left Nut to have a functioning WebOS ROM
Guys why is it soo good ?
What does it have over other OSes
WebOs is the best yet. Just need more hardware behind it..

I've got to admit I've not used it extensively, but I walked into O2 stores and tried the demo phones and it was the most fluid experience I've had. I'd love to try WP7, and of course I've loaded froyo ( and ubuntu) but I've found android frustrating as information just isn't accessible without jumping in and out of an app, and I'm worried WP7 will be similar. No multitasking is a big downer for me- I do loads of work and research on my phone. With CHT2 Sense seems great, if only it was abit more stable! I'm hopeful on that one though! but yeah, WebOS seems so smooth I forgot I was moving between applications.

Meego too- i nearly went an N900 over the HD2, now glad I didn't!

Go play with one for 10 minutes. You'll quickly see why webOS is a juggernaut among mobile operating systems.
Everything else just feels like **** (pretty much) once you use and have experienced webOS's fluidity and easy of use.

I agree. My nephew has a Palm Pixi and WebOS is truly sweet. Ever since he got his Pixi I have been yearning for WebOS on my HD2. If the Acer Liquid Stream launcher worked better, it would suffice me. But it has some bad issues.
Can we like start a poll for development of webOS on the HD2?
webOS (sorry Google, sorry Apple) is surely the best mobile OS out there. (I Know, I've had them all).
Well one plus side to it, is it supports homebrewing.
What does it take to code a port like that? A bunch of assembly language programming and hardware interfacing? Honestly I have wanted WebOS on any device for a long time. Since it's based on linux, shouldn't there be a way to somehow set it on top of an Ubuntu build/Android build?
And on top of that, wouldn't HP's legal team be raping anyone who even thought about attempting to port WebOS on anything?
http://www.webosroundup.com/2010/12/hacked-webos-appears-on-htc-hero/
According to this source, the entire development on the hero was a hoax. Can anyone confirm?
Any screenshots??
I would be surprised if HP made any attempts to stamp out a port of WebOS. HP has been supportive of the WebOS homebrew scene, and they need to increase their user base by any means necessary. Just like Microsoft with WP7 it's in their best interest to turn a blind eye to this sort of thing at least until their "ecosystem" has a better foothold.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can we have webOS on our HD2's
Its more powerful has a bigger screen and well its an HD2...
the Palms are way to small for such an amazing UI.
Where do I donate to help this along ??????
Forreal..i would also donate myself...
I would love to see webOS on our HD2's. Haven't had the opportunity to use it yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. Also heard it's very easy to port iPhone games to and it plays them just as good as the iphone... with HP behind it now, we'll probably be seeing lots of games and apps for that os.
