What is the simplest and cheapest way to tether (via USB) undetected with the Atrix?
I’m strongly considering getting the Atrix as my first Android phone and don’t want to root at this point (as I’m new to this). I currently have a WM 6 device which I use to tether undetected on occasion while traveling. I prefer a free option since I don't tether very often. I would simply like to ensure that I can still tether undetected with the Atrix before I buy. Is this possible?

When you plug in the phone and it brings up the list, with share internet at the bottom. Is there any way to make that option free, or replace it within the menu with something that is free?
Yes, but it needs to be written into a custom ROM.
ya, I know that lots of custom roms have that option, but why not just use wireless tether? If you're still on stock rom, just go into the market and download it. It's free and works great.
Why not just use the once sprint bundles with the phone? The sprint mobile hotspot one.
Is there some disadvantage to that?
the mobile hotspot is unavailable in the same way usb tether is unavailabe. Sprint does not want you to use your phone for tethering without paying them an extra $30 a month.
Can't you use EasyTether from the market? Doesn't require root. Try the free version and if you like it you could buy the $10 version that allows https access. I have never used it but the description states it can do this without root probably because it is using USB so cannot work as a hotspot for multiple PCs at one time and you did state you cared about the USB tethering vs wireless.
I believe barnecle ? I think is the name, also allows usb.
Barnacle is for root as are all wireless tether apps..

Why USB tether?
I would like USB tether because most of the time when I don't have internet, I also don't have power. Why would I plug my phone into my computer, only to turn on the computer's wifi and turn on the phones wifi to make the connection?
If I can only have the 3g/4g radio going, and no wifi on either device, I get better battery life all around.
Here is what I use for USB tethering. It requires a little bit of setup (and adb), but does not require root, and is completely free. In my opinion it works much better than EasyTether or PDA Net

I use Ubuntu, so I can help with setup if anyone needs it. For OSX and Windows, you are on your own.
I have a G2 with Tmobile and use a lot of data on it. A tab would be much better and I'd like to pick up the wifi version of the Xoom. Now seeing as Verizon has tiered pricing for their mobile broadband/tablet data plans I'd be much better off tethering my G2 to the Xoom, but which methods would work? I tried using Barnacle as an experiment but with a bit of reading found out that devices that aren't ad-hoc wouldn't connect (my PSP and CR-48 notebook wouldn't work, and reading the wiki the PS3 doesn't either) which leaves USB tethering. I know you have to install additional software with PDAnet tethering, so would USB tethering be possible android to android?
The Wireless Tether app works fine between my rooted Droid X and my CR-48, so I imagine it would work with a Xoom as well.
It should work with Wireless Tether. I'm hoping for that, if not, bluetooth tethering should work. And if that doesn't work, I'll have to use Connectify on my laptop to create a wifi hotspot of my tethered data connection from my little Eris! Hopefully, that won't be the case though, it'd be burden when not at home.
Yea.. simply just download the Wifi-Tether app. It works with everything, if you're rooted of course.
Or just use 2.2's built in tethering ability. Works just as good ~.~
Thanks, for some reason I forgot about the built in tether/hotspot, I think because when I bought my G2 the rep tried to sell me tethering for $15 a month or something. The wifi tether and barnacle tether apps don't work but the built in one does.
Is it possible to get a phone (samsung galaxy ace) and the transformer properly paired and connected via BT without rooting either of them?
Because I do not want to have to root as I dont think I know enough about Android to be able to do this confidently and not brick either device.
Thank you for any help.
I did search for this but hope I havent overlooked a possible answer.
you should have no problem pairing the two of them for simple things such as transferring files. Unless you have the option for tethering on your phone available, I doubt you will be able to tether via bluetooth and use the internet without being rooted.
PDANet
Allows you to tether via blutooth, just be carefull with your permissions when disconecting.
Just use the hotspot app
Good morning,
I have been following this forum quite a bit, and even before getting myself a Transformer, I was quite annoyed by this tethering thing. Of course, when I got mine, this was the first thing that I've tried, even before upgrading to Honeycomb 3.1. So, the Wi-Fi hotspot on my HTC Desire combined with TF works flawlessly. I do not understand why you guys are having problems with.
I did root my Desire to get some applications which need root (Titanium backup), but nothing else to enable the Hotspot.
Everything which I'm using is stock Android and everything works without problems.
And a side-note, the TF simply works as expected and as advertised, no problems whatsoever
HTC Desire on Froyo
Asus TF on Honeycomb 3.1
Orange mobile in Luxembourg
Have iPhone and can Bluetooth tether with it.

A fantastic tablet like this all needs the internet connect on go. But, I could not find any trace or help on how to connect my Relliance/Tata USB data card to start browsing on this Tablet. Wifi is a not an option to connect on go. In India 3G/4G is still a long way to come and I believe none of the manufactures still do not ignore such an environment. In India currently the main media to connect the network is USB data card.
Surprisingly, I could see some threads which suggest simple steps to solve this issue by rooting my tablet. But, no one would like to lose the warranty, just by rooting it.
Any suggestions/Help in this regard will be of great useful.
I find it very unlikely to do anything that it's not supposed to be available out of the box without rooting the tablet.
I think the no 3g support is all about laws and restrictions. And of course to get you to buy a more expensive device and pay for overpriced data services.if you have android phone look on market for tether apps. There are solutions for rooted and unrooted phones.I use wireless tether.requires root I think.pda-net does not but not sure how it will work.
Good luck.
Oops. You will have to the ad-hoc hack for wifi tether.not sure about PDA.look for infrastructure network support tether app.sorry for my mistake

Is there a way to plug our phones into tablets and use the 3g service from our phones to our tablets.... Sorta like a modem for on the go.. Instead of using wifi tethering? Not sure if it's been done or not thought it would be a good idea tho
Do a quick search, it has been discussed extensively in other threads. You can use PdaNet Tablet if your phone support bluetooh.
No. Simple answer.
The 500 does not have this capability, Because it doesn;t have the radio to accommodate it.
Physical limitation
so my best bet for Internet on the go is tethering from my phone?
If you want to connect your tablet to a phone you will need to root your tablet.
The tablet doesn't support Ad-hoc connectivity out of the box. Many wi-fi hotspot features on phones use Ad-hoc to connect.
I also remember a while back I was trying to see if I could connect my stock Tablet to the personal hotspot of somebody's iPhone 3gs (connects via bluetooth) but it didn't work. I remember rooting the tablet and installing Thor's ROM and found out that now I could connect to the personal hotspot. Not sure what was in Thor's ROM to make this work though.
And as another poster said, you can try pdanet if you have an android phone. I tried it before I had an Android phone and it wouldn't work (even though the phone still had pdanet on it), and have not tried it since because my phone has wifi-hotspot.

Depends on your phone really. Android is easy enough rooted + wifi tether for root. Non-smartphone takes a little work, but isn't that bad. Check tut on getting usb to 'dumbphone' modem working. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452800
