I know this is not about the Nexus S, but there's no denying that anything dual-core related is inexorably related to the Nexus S and its lack of one. So:
LG announces dual-core phone for early 2011: http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/15/lg-optimus-2x-first-dual-core-smartphone-launches-with-android/
No coincidence that it's being announced right before Nexus S officially launches.
Anyone going to change their minds?
I've known the LG Star/Optimus 2X was coming soon since AndroidCentral first mentioned it awhile back. I plan to get my Nexus S anyway.
still getting the Nexus S
still getting a nexus but any word on the carrier?
No, it's not related to the Nexus S in any way. Why? Because it's not backed up by Google. Plain and simple.
It's going to Korea and then the rest of Asia and Europe after. No mention of any other releases. Sticking with the Nexus S.
The phone is also quite ugly.
Nexus S. I'll probably have it for a year, at the least.
Why would I hold off on the NS in hopes of the Star being compatible w/ Tmobile 4G?

I misread, Android supports dual core, but the application has to be re-written to take advantage of it.
Have Android 2.3 dual core support?
no support
Hi Guys
As per my understanding, android 2.3 does not support dual core CPU, so why would LG release a dual core CPU hardware on android !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
According to AndroidEncyclopedia.com:
This new series of multi core processors destined for the smartphone market will be sampling in the first quarter of 2011 and will enter mass production sometime in the second half of the same year. This comes really as a bit of a disappointment really as the Tegra 2 processor is already out and is kind of setting new standards on every test which has the ability to optimally use the multi-core technology. The biggest inconvenience the processors really faces is the lack of proper Android support when it comes to recognizing the multi-core architecture and thus using it to its full potential.

I heard that about Honeycomb, not Gingerbread.
I love tech (especially the rapid growing mobile space) but i'd rather not have the very first dual core phone on the market. i'd rather wait and see how the OS (honeycomb and up), app devs, etc utilize it AND i'd wait to hear back about battery life.
LG and Android may really become a big player in 2011: http://phandroid.com/2010/12/16/exclusive-lg-b-android-phone-super-slim-super-bright/
Nexus L 2011, anyone?
Wow that phone looks insane. Having said that, it would be better if it was an official Google device. If it isn't I'll be sticking to the Nexus S for the foreseeable future until the next one releases.
Dual cores sound nice and all but single cores are beginning to be perfected and can really run android without any hitches, upgrading to a dual core just to have one wouldn't really give us a huge boost in performance yet.
Finally I can play Crysis on my Phone with Ultra settings. Really? Its cool and all but how fast do they want your apps to open up and your angrybirds to load up on a freaking phone, In my opinion its over kill never the less cool I guest.
Based on the last CES Archos launched their Archos 101 Home tablet. Archos Home tablet edition has a much lower specs compared to Archos Internet tablet edition but in the video provided at Archosfans.com it says that it has support to Gingerbread and Future Version of android.
Does this mean that the Current Archos 101IT edition can still be upgrade to those version of android?
Any thoughts in thi matter???

Of course it can be upgraded to the newer OS version. The big question is will Archos actually do it. I'm really hoping they will but won't be surprised if they don't.
if archos won't upgrade our A101IT maybe others can make custom roms? have any of you seen or heard if one is under development?

No one has mentioned making a Gingerbread ROM.
i stumbled upon a video on youtube. the video is captured at last weeks CES.
in the video they ask the guy if honeycomb will be on the tablet. he says "uh yah"
he also mentions how full flash capability will be available by end of month.
check out the video

lol. Not much of a commitment. Plus, this is the same crew that tried to say that the 7 Home Tablet is a Gen8 tablet. So, I think I will not be holding my breath on this one.
What do you think about 256 RAM issue? I suppose that 2.3 (even 3.0) could be run on 101IT, however, it may work very slow!

Won't know until we try. They said the same thing about Froyo until it was running on devices that had 256MB.

Exactly. We get into a Windows and Mac mindset but Android is different from those systems in that each progressive version gets a little better at using system resources, not worse so you don't always have to upgrade the hardware to run the new software. My original MyTouch phone with a 600 ghz processor and 128 mb of memory runs much smoother on froyo than it ever did on donut or eclair.
That said, there are diminishing returns and Honeycomb is really a major step up in terms of functionality so I am not holding my breath that Archos will take the time to upgrade considering they will be probably be putting out new devices by then. I love my A70 but I sort of look at it like an early adopter type device to see how useful the form factor for me (it is...I have an hour to 90 minute commute and it is perfect).
I plan to upgrade and maybe even get a contract (yikes!) for a honeycomb tablet later this year. I would never consider $275 chump change but if I can use it for 8 months to a year and then sell it for $100-150 to put toward an upgrade, I would be happy.
I considered the Galaxy Tab but a 2 year contract on this generation of devices is a bad move in my opinion.

600 ghz? Wouldn't your phone explode?
no - but the battery does not last very l
i hope they do make an upgrade, but they might wait until honeycomb cause its supposed to be for tablets or something
i thought better be hoping to the developers to made the gingerbread rom than hoping the archos team made it

Just wondrering if the Archos 101it will get a Gingerbread update soon as I have seen this for a Arnova 10.1

Nobody knows. Nobody at Motorola has really said anything about it. I believe there was a rumor of possibly late summer or sometime in the fall... but who really knows.
And... i don't know if i'd say "will bring support for" in regards to dual-core phones. "will bring better support for", maybe. Supposedly the version of Froyo currently used on the Atrix has been modified to support dual core.
I am guessing we will sooner get it by bypassing the bootloader than motorola and at&t pushing updates on a phone they have wrong holed since the beginning.

wait so i spent money on dual core that is not even supported?
It is supported, but Gingerbread is better for multi core.
Motorola as recompiled the kernel with SMP enabled, so we are using the dual core in froyo for all the apps that we install that supports dual core.
This is all sort of misleading. Yes, we have an SMP, preemptible kernel so AFAIK system tasks and others will run while our system is going, things should be generally smoother. Most apps will execute on one core, as I think the Dalvik VM is not multi-core aware.. although single-threaded apps will not get an automatic performance boost from 2.3/2.4, when a multi-core aware Dalvik comes to us. However, the garbage collector thread will run on the other core, and apps which are programmed to take advantage of multiple cores will certainly run faster. So, even if we had a multi-core capable Dalvik today, it wouldn't be a huge performance boost until the rest of the ecosystem catches up. But yes, hopefully Motorola is getting us there soon! The MT870, a cousin of our MB860, is shipping in China with Gingerbread on it.
i spoke with some guys from motorola, they will release the 2.3 in the half year, because a lot of moto phones just got froyo now, so they are giving some time before lauch ginger, but it has been confirmed from moto workers, WE WILL HAVE GINGERBREAD !^^
We'll have to wait and see I guess...
I am not too hopeful about it tho.

Can we flash gingerbread on tab 10.1?
Not yet, we need root and recovery. After that, likely so.
Honeycomb a bit too bleeding-edge right now?
I don't think you need to flash a Rom to get gingerbread.

why would you want to flash gingerbread?
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs Honeycomb (Android 3.x). The retail version comes with 3.1
Gingerbread is Android 2.3.x and it's designed for phones, not tablets. The link that basskid provides shows how Honeycomb has some phone layout support... kind of pointless to enable on a tablet. It was a bigger deal when rumors were flying about on whether or not Honeycomb was going to be released for phones (which we now know it won't be).

Well, I guess there is that, but you still need root to change the LCD Density.
Still, it depends on why the OP wants Gingerbread. If it's because Honeycomb is too laggy for him, just enabling the phone interface might not fix that; and if it's only because of lag I'd just wait for better Honeycomb ROMs to come out.
No need to ask why he wants to do this. Hell, if a how-to was posted, I'd do it just to do it.
Kind of like Angry Birds on the new nook. Why not?
Yes honeycomb is slow as compare to my gingebread on my galaxy tab 7. Even though gt 7 has SINGLE CORE processor its very fast. Plus typing on the honeycomb is too slow i hit letter and it appears late. I think this is a honeycomb issue. I am wondering if gt 7 with slower processor and less ram than gt 10.1 is so fast with gingerbread how fast would gingerbread works on tegra 2 plus 1gb ram. I hope we can switch firmware just like we do on PC sometimes windows 7 and sometimes Windows XP on same PC.
Hi All,
I'm eyeing the Nexus S as a potential purchase in the coming days and simply wish to know if it is at all known at this time if the device will be receiving future Android Operating System updates post 2.3.4, e.g (next mobile major Android release). Will Google continue to support the device?
That is the entire point of owning a nexus device... so yes. The N1 is STILL receiving updates so you can expect the S to be receiving them for a few more years
If there's any new firmware that google will release, the Nexus S is for sure to receive it first.
Anyone have an idea when we might see another update?
I've done my fair share of googling but seem to get mixed messages so what do you guys think?
It'll get ice cream sandwich for sure

That's like saying Quad core CPUs came out. Let's discontinue support for Dual Cores! No. ICS will be backwards compatible. Dual Core (or quad cores at that point) will be able to take full advantage of the OS.

guys, calm down. I did say from a rather unreliable source. I dont buy it either.
ICS might habe limitations to small screen size devices due to it's hw/sw-buttonless nature, but I don't think it'll be excluding those 800mhz+ phones released within the last 6 months. If it's exclusively for dual core, how many ICS capable devices we'd have right now, 2?
I mean "forcing" ppl to replace their not even 1y old phones for the biggest Android update ever would be a bad idea. I can only talk for myself but this might be drawing me away from Android OS (Bad comparison inc, even the iphone 3g is rumored to get iOS 5). Hope the smartphone OS market will be picking up speed again, Google seems to be slacking to me.

Wth are you talking about? all ice cream sandwich does/is going to do is close the gap between gingerbread and honeycomb and maybe add software only buttons.
The Nexus S WILL GET IT and for that matter...so may the N1....
I'm pretty positive N1 will get ICS, and even most of the future updates unless it comes to hardware limitation.
@OP nexus phones are the most future proof when it comes to software updating, even with a nexus one you can't go wrong. Don't hesitate to get the nexus S btw, one hellava phone.
They better not make us wait 3+ months to get the update like they did for N1 users and GB. For me, ICS better be a pretty significant upgrade, otherwise I'll be going away from the Android platform. Really not a fan of the design and presentation.
if doesn't, i swear, i will buy a Nokia 1660.
it will be incredibly pointless if the android is supposed to "end with the fragmentation" doesn't come to previous nexus devices.
