Why the need for different kernels per region? - Galaxy Tab General

Hi all,
Really a question for the guys building kernels, id like to know why to example I wouldn't be able to install a kernel for the euro tab on my Japanese tab? Are there hardware sensor differences or something? Can understand the radio hardware might differ but really just talking about the linux kernel here...
Thanks.

what is the differnece beteween a ROM & KERNAL?

What improvements does a kernal provide to any ROM that may already be installed on your dinc?
Noob question I know
thx
All ROMs have a kernel installed, but you can change it. Kind of like an interface layer with drivers. Different kernels can give you different battery life and performance, laggy or smooth.l, fast or slow connection, etc.
This is really slim down version. If you're really interested, read up on some Linux.

[Q] Why flash kernel?

Hey guys,
I'm running CM7 on my Wildfire.
I'm still experimenting with android and I would like to know more about kernels.
So why should you flash a kernel?
Greets
Alex
I don't know, which kernels are available for wildfire, but in general you can gain many things. For example new or other drivers, security fixes, and/or mods, such as overclocking.

Hi
I'm fairly new to this also, what I would say is it's probably easier/quicker to search the forums first before posting it is very unlikely that your question hasn't already been asked and answered before.
Anyway ... kernels ... I have read it put simply as "code that allows the software to communicate with the hardware of your handset" so I guess it controls the actions of things like the wifi adapter and light/motion sensors and more importantly the CPU. CM7 already has a kernel that allows overclocking. There were some ROMs that you had to flash sepetate kernels on to achieve this.
Flashing different kernels to CM7 generally breaks some other function so in my opinion it's best to stick with the one currently built in unless a kernel is released to specifically fix a major bug.
If you look at the stickies topics in the wildfire sub-forum you will find a list of Rome, kernel s and radios with brief descriptions. Most kernel titles tell you what there main function is.

I see "[2.6.32.39]" nFinity" in a lot of people's Sigs. I have tried googling and I can't find any info on this Kernel at all.
Any info/help?
Edit - Scratch that, I just looked at my "About phone" and I'm on 2.6.32.40-nFinity [email protected] #1

What do kernels do?

I've been flashing different roms but I don't flash kernels can you guys tell me what flashing one of them will do?

What most use them for is to (overclock) their tabs and other features. Make sure you get the one for the rom you have installed.
Kernels are the simple codes written to utilize the hardware. They make available all the functions of hardware with system calls. Some of the kernels are also called micro kernels as they use very little codes to use all the functions of hardware and are thus very small in size. But coding becomes a little bit typical. Well simply, when you are changing your rom most of the time your kernel also change as different dev's use different kernel for there rom. You need not to worry to change kernel if you dont know much about it. Kernel are also responsible for increasing the speed of your tab as they change the way hardware is implemented.
One very good outcome of changing kernel you must have noted is that of overclocking.
Try to use the kernel which is stable.

Kernels

Hi guys. I am wondering if kernels are more "universal" than roms? I ask because I would really like to be able to overclock this tab a little but need a compatible kernel and Im not aware of any more for this tab yet. So I wonder since kernels dont have to have drivers and all that if one from a different tab would work?

if your talking about the tab 4 t230/t230nu then the hardware is very specific to the devices and building kernels/recoveries is very difficult flashing kernels for any other device will almost certainly be bad news for your t230/t230nu.. and a beginner dev i would not advise it and just wait for us devs to come up with something..
Its the 530, but thanks. Am I missing anything anywhere? Is there currently a kernel I can overclock with?

currently i dont believe there is a specific kernel to overclock the 530 but i may be wrong unless there is a rom which comes with a clockable kernel... you may want to have a hunt around in the tab 4 dev sections..

Oh ive hunted lol, havnt seen any kernels for download. Hoping someone knows if one of the rom kernels has overclocking enabled.

Kernel VS Not. Difference?

Good day
Anyone can show the differences between a Kernel ROM and NOT?
I'm currently running on SuperStock-Rom V2.4 and planning to flash SuperStock-Kernel.
Want to know the Advantages and Disadvantages.
Thanks
One is a full ROM with different software and various interface differences, depending on the ROM you choose.
A kernel is the base operator for any OS. This tells your hardware how to work and potentially unlocks features the standard kernel does not allow.
Not sure if this explains them well in non technical terms.

That helps, thanks Man! But from your opinion. Which one is better? Kernel or Not?
Want to know more about difference between the two. Heheh. Much better from DEVs. Hehehe.
Thanks!
I think i had the wrong question here.
I was actually thinking the Kernel is a different ROM that comes with Kernel version.
So Kernel is a add-on to flash on top of a ROM. Right?

Yes. The two are totally separate things. You can be rooted on a stock ROM and use a custom kernel.
Likewise, you carbon be in a custom ROM with a stock kernel.
To ask which is best wouldn't make sense as they are two totally different parts of a phone\OS.

In my case, I'm currently in a custom ROM right now which is SuperStock-Rom V2.4, can I flash the SuperStock-Kernel V2.0.1?
Thanks
depends rom might conflict with kernel since kernel moght set flags the rom woukd freak on. A good kernel can make a stock rom fly. But a stock kernel cant help even the most optimised rom. Kernel is what gives it the horse power.
Just make sure you have a flashable backup of your current kernel so you can revert if you run in to any boot issues, then you should be good to go.
