Hello all, I couldn't find a thread explaining this so I figured I'd ask.
Mainly at home, I keep getting a G icon, not 3G. I notice my download speeds when not on wifi are 20-40kb, same with upload. When I'm at work I usually get the G icon or H+ icon, again, the max download I can get on cellular data is 40kb.
My Focus is getting around 2mb down. My iphone 4 that I got rid of to get this was getting around 2-3 mb in most places. I've seen people saying that they getting slow speeds, but not as slow as I'm getting. Any ideas on what I should do?
That probably stands for GPRS which with those data speeds sounds about right
GPRS--->EDGE--->3G--->UMTS--->HSPA
I figured as much, thanks for clarifying.
What would cause me not to get 3g when every other device works fine?

Ok so I have been searching the forums for a few days now and have yet to find the answer to my question. So please don't bash me for not using the search function cuz I did. There is a good chance that my question has already been answered and if it has please direct me to the proper thread. Otherwise my issue is that my epic is rooted as of a few days ago cuz I moved into an apartment and I don't have any Internet yet. Not for a few weeks, but I am using the android wifi tether app. That's working good for me except I am not getting any 4g speed through it. If I'm lucky i will get maybe 1 to 1.5 Mbps but most of the time less than 1 mbps. Does anyone know if the wifi App supports wimax speeds or not. Yes I have 4g coverage in my area. Where I am sitting right now on my phone speed test results are above 3.5 to 4 mbps. But while using my iPad (which I am using to write this) via wifi tether app speed tests are dreadfully low. Same with all other devices I have tried connecting like my xbox or laptop. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Is that the results withe 4g on? 3-4mbs? I get that with 3g untethered 4g untethered is around 8mbs. Have you tried testing it in another area? You might just be in a 4g deadspot. With wifi tether I get 3-4mbs on 4g. I can't really tell you where to go for info but those numbers sound more like 3g to me.

Yes that is with 4g on. Where my phone is this very second. I have 2 bars of 4g signal. And it's working fine for me. Sitting side by side with 4g activated and wifi tethering on. My phone will get 4mbps and iPad will get 1.5mbps. From the same server on speediest.net. And I run the tests at separate times so they don't conflict for bandwidth.
Update: just ran test again.
iPad - 350ms ping 1.63mbps download .86mbps upload
Phone - 122ms ping 3.96mbps download 1.2mbps upload
This is a known issue..it happens in android-wifi-tether and mobile-ap as well..its definitely using the 4g connection and wifi should be capable of transmitting more..I mean even the lowest is capable of 11mbps..but N should be a lot higher.
As far as I know there is no solution yet...the EVO had the same issue at one point but it was fixed I hear..
Maybe it has something to do with the settings on your phone. I noticed with mine that my speed would just climb and climb then suddenly just drop at around 8. It wouldn't be a slow climb either it's like it's actually being throttled somehow. Try clearing the cache or something, but for some reason those number just don't sound right to me.

Any idea how or what fixed it?
Just factory reset my phone last night.. And as for the numbers.. I know right.. Something isn't working here..

In their case it had to do with a routing table..but that routing table was for HTC devices so its not related to ours...
Both Mobile-AP and Android-Wifi-Tether experience the same issue as well :/..I do not think its wifi related either..it must be something in between the software and the sending to wifi.
Reason I say this is if you try the device with 4g on 1 bar, then 4g on 2 bars, then 4g on 3 bars on both the device and on phone you will see the speeds vary..example:
1 bar
phone: 4mbps/1mbps
laptop: 0.5mbps/0.03mbs
2bars
phone: 7mpbs/1mbps
laptop: 2mbps/1mbps
If it was the wifi speed, then the speed would not have dropped so much.. something in between is effecting it
Oh.. That makes sense. It's just too bad though. Thanks for helping me understand.
Probably the way the wifi and 4g radios are set up and how they interact with each other, maybe 4g has more priority than wifi. I'm just guessing though. I don't know much

Just FYI I too was getting slow speeds but with Sprints hotspot that I was paying $30 a month for. Needless to say I cancel the feature and will seek rooting my phone and add the free tethering, casue at those speeds it isnt worth it.
Sounds like the problem you are having might be caused by something that is the result of 4G and Wifi frequencies being the similar. If you are using both frequencies in a close proximity such as a room or house the frequencies have a high likeliness of causing interferences by reflecting off each other. A way to test this would be to compare wirless tethered speeds to wired ones on the same device.... Hope this helps.

Thing is its getting full speed on the device...at the time its using wimax..so wimax is not having the issue..not to mention..there is a relation to the wimax bars and the wimax speed which is strange...
The manual says that in addition to the H and E icons that appear above the up/down data arrows, there's a 3G icon. Has anyone seen the 3G appear? I'm either on H or E, but have not seen 3G on this phone. I'm thinking H will appear for both 3G and 4g/hsdpa+. Is there any way to tell which you're really on?
I have yet to see it. I'm always either on E or H.

i have never seen it. i only have 3g in my area not 4g and its always says h all the time
I have seen a G show up for a split second once....i thought it was just me seeing things. I didn't read the manual but when I saw this post I figured I'd respond.

I also caught a quick glimpse of a G today right after I woke the phone up, but it quickly went to E. I guess the H is for both 3G and 4G/HSDPA+...kind of sucks that there's no easy way to differentiate between those two imo. I'm guessing they did that on purpose, so that people wouldn't realize how much of the time they are really only getting 3G speeds on this '4G' phone.
On that note, I've been running speedtest and generally only getting around .5-.6 mbps d/l around the house. While driving to a few places around the city (Kansas City) today, I did get up to a max of 4 mbps, but mostly more like 2-3 mbps. Are these reasonable real-world speeds?
i was gonna say yes until i realized you had a . in front of your 5/6... idk but too me thats really low, my nexus one which wasnt 4g used to get 5-6mbs here in LA

I get 10.9 Mbps d/l and 4.49 u/l
6 down .8 up... hsdpa, not plus...
Seems like I only have hsdpa, not hsupa

I live out in the boonies and work in the city. At my house I get e and at work I get h. But when im halfway to work it will fluctuate from H to G to E then back to H
Hey everyone, Im having this weird issue with my data speeds. When i had my TP2 i would always get speeds of about 700Kb/s dl/ul with pings of around 150ms
BUT on my MT4G my speeds are a little screwy 1st off is sometimes my pings are 650+ other times normal, Also my download speeds are getting 250-600Kb/s which is obviously slower than my TP2.
The weird thing is (besides slower with random ping times) my upload speeds. For a VERY quick second i will see a speed of 3+Mb/s then it will drop down to either around 700 or stay at exactly 1Mb/s...odd
i was thinking maybe the towers dont have the backhaul in place yet, but with a burst of 3+Mb im thinking there is something wrong because if it WASNT there i wouldnt even get that burst, or even get to 1Mb because before the 4g max i could get is 800Kb/s up and down.
I called tmobile and they want to do a master reset....psh please! to much hassle
What do you think could be the problem? i got a new sim card with the new phone so i couldnt be that.
Try having ur GPS on when running Speedtest. Also, make sure that you are connected to the closest server. I am getting 6Mbps in Miami.

Hi everyone, if like me you have noticed that the SGS2 doesnt like getting data while on 3G but fine using H or H+ then maybe you could try reading through the link below.
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1714413&p=2&#r21
All credit to them for the info.
Seems as though the SGS2 doesnt like switching between 3G to H then back to 3G?
Im on O2 UK and have tried various roms and modems but the problem still persists.
As far as i can tell the process is safe and doesnt void your warrenty but the usual dont blame me if you do something wrong comes in to play here.
Im going to try this as i can only get 3G at work and is such a pain having to wave the phone about or stand in a specific corner just to get a H signal so i can get an urgent email.
Hopefully Samsung will sort this out soon in a new modem upgrade.
Cheers Woggle

Just a quick update: have done the class 5 trick and getting constant data on 3g and doesnt try to connect to H at all. Speedtest shows 2.5mb download which is fine for me.
Hope this helps others out aswell.

Thanks for sharing this tip. Like yourself, I am getting frustrated with the data band switching and bad connections I get from my service provider. i have locked the phone on 3g for now. Hope to see improvement in batt life too
.....
Thanks again!!

Which means you are actually still on H, not 3G.
I switched from Sprint to a Tmobile monthly 4G plan ($30 unlimited web) when I got my Nexus 4. I've noticed a few things, and wondered if anyone else has noticed the same (whether you are on the prepaid monthly 4g plan or tmobile contract).
In the status bar, it flips between 3G and H (I never see H+, al
though I'm not sure it even shows that).
Using the speedtest.net app, I've not gotten over 14000kbps download 1700kbps upload
Occasionally my phone will say "emergency calls only (exactly what it showed before I put the sim card in)", although it fixes itself shortly after. I believe this is because I get crappy coverage in my apartment
Are other people seeing this type of thing? Is this normal, or is something wrong with my phone and/or sim
Pretty normal from my experience.

Same here except I have yet to see the 3g icon ever. Just H and E (when I was traveling to the mountains I had lots of E zones). Edge is terrible.
At work I get around 18-20000kbps and 2000 upload.
Why am I not seeing the 3g ever?
Never had that issue with the sim card not being recognized, maybe try a new sim? I get average speeds of 15Mbps download and 1.5Mbps upload. I see the 3G and H symbols often, rarely ever do I see the E.

I only ever see H and E, I've never seen 3G. Edge speeds are between horrendous and non-existant. On H I'm seeing between 3K and 15K down, 1-2K up.

You will never see the +, it will only display H. 3G is kind of like a battery saver mode(at least to me anyways). It seems to be there when the phone is idling. 14's not bad. Highest I get in my house is 6, lol. Outside in better areas I have seen 18.
Good to know that I won't see an H+, so at least that is normal. I should probably also have mentioned that I live in an HSPA+42 area, so I was hoping I'd see something in the 30+ range. I've tested this at different times (and different areas) each day over the past 10 days.
:EDIT:
Also just noticed this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016783 which showed me where to look to see some more information as to what I'm connected to (3G, HSPA catagory) under "Mobile network type" (in "About Phone") . Looks like I need to see HSPA:24 which means I'm connected to the HSPA+42. Currently only seeing HSPA:15, so I'll keep an eye on this when doing speed tests in the future. I wish the speedtest app would list this info when doing the test.
