Currently, I have 2 iphones, and the 2 separate data plans that I have to get from AT&T for those. In addition, I also have a Verizon MIFI that I plug into my Cradlepoint router, to use as my home network for internet. Since I am capped at 5gb per month on my mifi, I really have to watch what I do each month on the internet (no streaming, etc).
I am seriously considering getting 2 EVOs instead, and ditching the iphones, and the mifi, but I would only do this, if I could truly use one of the EVOs as the main internet connection for my home. It makes sense to just have one of them with the $30 unlimited data plan, so I would only do the high volume of internet stuff when that phone was physically located in my house.
Is anyone using their EVO as their primary internet for their home?
i don't as i like my 12mpbs + comcast internet connection at home as the best i can get from my evo is 2-3mbps. you would not be in a good position if you have to rely on your evo to have internet connection. mainly, either phone has to be setup the same either either one of you leaves while the other needs internet access (and what would happen when you need leave and the other is using the internet?). secondly, what will you do for internet access while on the phone as sprint does not allow/voice & data at the same time. that is where you would benefit from the mifi as your internet is not dependent on your phone.
you would more than likely be saving money over the longterm by switching to sprint but you would not save money upfront. 2 x evo's @ $200 each = $400 + activation fee $36 = $436, cheapeast data and voice plan = $69 + $10 premium data usage = $79 + insurance/tax = $90 X 2 = $180/m for both phones
or family share plan
cheapest family plan $109 + (2x$10 premium data) = $129/m
you will save money overall in the end, but definately not upfront by switching to sprint. Does the $436 cost of paying for 2 evo's out weigh the cost of mifi for verizon? you could also look into getting a sprint mifi/hotspot instead....
Yes!!! I cancelled my stupid Comcast internet. I was paying $60 / month for a garbage connection that went down all the time. Sprint internet at least doesn't disconnect for periods of days at a time. Maybe it's not 6 mb/s YET but at least it's stable.
Basically it looks like this for me:
Before: Sprint SERO $30 + Comcast $60 = $90
Now: Sprint EPRP Family plan $45 + $30 Hotspot = $75
Cancelling Comcast: PRICELESS I despise this company so badly, that I think I would have paid more than double the price just so that I wouldn't be forced to use them. (My apt is covered by the Comcast monopoly unfortunately)
Seriously, try it out. Worst case you change your mind. I have nothing but good things to say, and I'm running only over 3G. I can't wait til 4G, it will be amazing. The only problem is, as you know, the phone must be there and not on a call. Also streaming netflix you get lower quality (not HD) video so that stinks but I am guessing on 4G it will be better.
This probably doesn't matter to you, but just so you know the pings are very decent for me at least: I range from as low as 70 ms to 150 ms if signal is bad. I've been playing games like Halo 3 and Warcraft 3 with no issues whatsoever ( and winning )
A disclaimer: I am single, living alone, so my flexibility is better. Still, if you are not in the best financial position, you have to ask yourself where the value lies in internet for $60 / month. Obviously a dedicated cable / dsl / T1 line is preferable, but is it really worth it?
Any questions feel free to ask.
After just my first post, i get 2 great contrasting posts, with useful information in both. That's awesome.
The biggest issue I see now, is the fact that you can't hotspot & send/rcv calls at the same time. That almost defeats the purpose, if I have to use my connection to work, and am either on the net, or on the cal
Is that true for tethering and the hotspot? Perhaps that is the same interface on the phone?
The cost savings would be about $50 per month, based on the config. Based on the months left in my contract, that would mean the sooner I want to switch, the better off I would be, from a monthly expense. The costs of early termination for both iphones, and my mifi, are not really that bad, and it actualloy appears that the sooner I do it, the better it gets.
Im surprised no1 has said this yet but are u aware that you can root ur phone and have free unlimited wifi tendering.
I use my evo as my main connection in my dorm. My college uses a wack internet connection in the dorms, that doesnt go above 1mb/s on wifi and 1.5 mb/s when using a landline. N on top of that they moniter ur connection, make sure u dont do illegal stuff.
So for me a evo is a gift from god
If you are not in a 4g area you could pick up an old sero plan for 30/mo and a cheapo winmo phone and tether exclusively from that, and use the evo for your main phone. When/if you get 4g, cancel or sell the sero line and use the 4g off the evo (4g is data and voice at the same time).
Was reading thru the threads and decided to try something out.Am running a rooted Evo with wireless tethering on 3g and just made a call to see if both will work at the same time and they doWe have Road Runner from Time Warner and it doesn't seem to run all that much quicker thru a wirless router than Sprint's 3g,If my wife and I tether both laptops to the Evo at the same time,it slows down a little but not too bad considering its free.
To the people talking about that Sprint does not allow Call and Data at the same time never considered 4G. You CAN do Call and 4G Data at the same time.
I ditched my Road Runner bill of about $40. Almost completed a month as my phone as my sole internet provider. I play on Xbox Live, stream from Netflix, and internet on my desktop and laptop. So far so good.. I live by my self so I don't need the internet at home all day. What I am running below:
Evo 4G (1.47.651.1 and 25% discount/month) + Root + Wireless Tether 2.0.2
I wanted to know if I can hard wire my phone to a router. One because my download speeds when I wire tether to my PC are about 1.5 to 2.0 mbs faster than when I wireless tether. And second I want to amplify my wireless signal.. make sense? lol

How is netflix over 4G? what quality do you get? HD? On 3g the picture is very standard def.
What if you try a kernel with wireless N? Not sure if it would be reflected in speeds, but in theory it should help.
having wifi N wont make anything faster except inter-network transfer, the bottleneck is the 4g, its slower than N, so anything between the phone and your laptop should be fast, but not to the outside world.

Netflix (wire tether) on PC looks the same, HD content does not look that great, maybe a hair better, but not by much. Netflix over Xbox Live is almost the same. HD content doesn't look like HD lol... but it is viewable
On a second note, trying Windows Internet Connect Sharing now. Not no expert in network by all means and first time I tried this..
But this is what I am trying to do. Wire tether to PC, ICS to Xbox 360 via eathernet cable.
Only reason I am looking for a wired solution is because it is faster. Wireless Tether 2.0.5-2 is slower than 2.0.2. On Xbox Live trying to play Modern Warfare 2 with Wireless Tether 2.0.5-2 is sloooooooow. Searching seems to take forever. Went to 2.0.2 and noticed connection speeds a lot faster. Can't play Red Dead Redemption multiplayer with any of the two. Hoping that wire tether + ICS will work.

You are correct but you need 2 things to make that work. First is 4g in your area and secondly a good/reliable 4g signal. I can't wait until sprint does evora so we dont have to have 4g
So im checking out the 2.2 on the evo i just updated at work and decided to turn on the hotspot. By some miracle it works!!! I just connected 2 blackberrys and a Ipad to the phone. I just actived the hotspot on my rooted 2.2 and it works as well. I know for a fact that niether phone has it on the plan
Try it with 4g and let us know if it works please.
I got the update last night and tried the 4G hotspot. It does not work on Stock now.
Gives the same PCS login error 3G did before 2.2.

Yea i was expecting the same thing when i turned it on. But it works. i thought it was because of my rom but then updated the stores phone and i got the same results
That's great. I may not need to root, then.
They're going to charge you for it secretly.
Figure out how you did it, or backup the data for Sprint's Hotspot app with Titanium and post it here.

Im on the phone with Sprints NSS to see if its to good to be true.
My regional said to enjoy it while you can
i recall an article or press release that said that Sprint would prorate this. I will see what i can dig up for you guys
Ok so I'm pretty sure hotspot over 3g is free, they are only charging for hotspot over 4g. All this has been said in a few threads I have read, Just checked mine and 3g works but 4g doesn't. One of the threads that mentions this was Ava's 2.2 thread, I'm guessin he is correct, but don't quote me!!! Maybe try it a little and see if they do charge you first.
That would be very odd. They haven't been charging for hotspot over 4G because they couldn't prevent it, until now.
With 2.2 they added the ability to verify if you are signed up for the service on 4G.
Before the update today I could not use 3G hotspot but I could use it on 4G.
Now I cannot use it on either network without receiving the same login error.
Wait, so far in this thread it sounds like:
3G wi-fi is free
4G is not, either you cannot log in or they will charge/prorate it for you.
Has anyone else been able to verify anything? If anyone talks to a Sprint rep (I'm at work, or else I'd be on the phone asking) post their name so we can say they are the ones who told us this was true... so hopefully they'll tell us the truth or else look like a ****.
"____, why did we get 42090589 calls saying YOU said mobile hotspot was free over 3G/4G???"
Well remember guys, the leaked documents did say they were enabling 4g mac id verification, which would prevent 4g hotspot use without the proper credentials (the $30 hotspot charge unlocks that).
Think about it; the big data hog is going to be through 4g, as the higher the bandwith, the more your probably going to download. On the other hand, 3g's data usage is probably far less than that of 4g because of it's download limits. Of course there's going to be even more usage when your tethered to another device, but it's not like it's going to be gigabytes of data per hour as you wouldn't even have the ability to do so on 3g as you would with 4g.
It would make sense for Sprint to charge those who use more data (alike tiers) and allow those that don't with the ability to at least share their connection with another device. It's a win-win situation; Sprint gets to make their customers happy by allowing 3g tethering while still being able to charge its most active users, and we the customers get 3g tethering (not really important to me since I've had tethering since I rooted ages ago lol).

Makes sense to me, I was thinking that more people would be interested in tethering to 4G because of the speed is comparable (if not better) than DSL connections and slow (more like cheap) cable connections.
If this is the case, that's awesome, because the only reason I'd tether is to see a website that my phone had a hard time rendering (which should be nothing now) and to download something for the computer. And my city doesn't have 4G. But if I was in a 4G market, I'd still be happy with free 3G tethering.
I don't think you'll find too many people complaining, except those with non-Android devices. But that's their fault for not moving over to Android!
2 reps weren't sure, neither was their supervisor, we need a confirmation from a higher up.

Lol, bet you wish you lived in centex... It's amazing how they have 4g there but not where I live in phoenix which is the 5th largest metropolitan area in the u.s lol.
Good thing about 3g is that at least for me, I get pretty respectable speeds; usually about 2mb/s down and .5 up. With that I can still stream videos and download things faster than a snails pace.

How about now? Mine dropped 5 fold since a hard reset.
Hey, y'know, I've got a PERFECT solution to guarantee you get it for free:
Shut up and flash CM6.
I'm running mikfroyo 4.5, and I'm stoked about this rumor of the xoom wifi hitting sams club next month for 540. I loved the demo unit at the best buy closest to me, but of course in that one spot I didnt get 3g and I didnt bother trying 4g (pretty scarce in CT). Can anyone confirm that the sprint mobile hotspot app can give wifi to the xoom? I was reading another thread where the wifi tether app didnt so im a tad nervous.
I know the evo works with the xoom, but I use the built in cm hotspot.

I am running the Sprint Lovers ROM on my EVO and have no issues giving WiFi to my Xoom. Cause there is no way I paying for the ridiculous data rates with Verizon, especially since I have unlimited 3G/4G through Sprint.

The issue using the Evo with the Xoom is the people using the Wireless Tether app, which in that case puts the Evo into 'Ad-Hoc' mode, whereas using built in tether on a AOSP ROM, for example, makes a normal 'Infrastructure' mode that the Xoom can connect to.
As I understand it, that is.
sorry someone answered this for me on the evo forum thanks..
I use fresh and setup wireless tether on 4g and the xoom flies with it.
Has anyone considered this?
I have AT&T and was wondering if it would be better to get a 2 year 4g hotspot from like Sprint (is it unlimited) and I could use it at home and take it with me to use on my xoom etc?
It's unlimited, but 4G on sprint doesn't do so hot indoors. Walls block 2.5ghz spectrum.
Also, it looks pretty likely that sprint will start to tier data levels soon.
I keep seeing the Mifi 4g hotspots available for like $300 with no contract. How does service work? Do you still need to activate it and pay the $50 a month with Verizon?
I guess it may be cheaper to pay the $$ and get a thunderbolt out of contract and use the 4G on that instead rather than the $300 for the mifi wifi hotspot huh
Why not wait till the Xoom has 4G and use it as a hotspot, unless you got the WIFI because you thought 4G would be useless!

I bought the 4g version and saved $200 by getting a $20 a month data plan (which I use about 750MB of). I will not have to upgrade my phone to 4g for tethering and spend another $200. I can also talk and surf the web/navigate at the same time, that statement sounds familiar!
It's about a wash depending on your needs.

It's all about speed not volume for me. I would not necessarily use more data because it's faster I would just get those tasks done quicker.
Now if I used as a hotspot I would needs a bigger plan.
As others have said, the Sprint 4G MiFi doesn't do well inside. The high mhz spectrum doesn't do well to penetrate walls. You very rarely get full bars inside in my experience.
It sounds good to try and use a 4G hotspot for your home internet, but once you start spreading out a single WiMax signal (less than 10mbps down, capped 1mbps up) to several people and/or devices, you're not going to be as comfortable as you would be with home cable internet.
Now, LTE might be another situation because the speeds are much higher than WiMax and it penetrates buildings better, but still you're relying on a wireless signal to come down and then be spread back out to the devices.
For people like me who play games, I don't see myself cutting the cable internet any time soon. Not to mention that I regularly use 75gb+ of internet every month. Don't think theres a single carrier (even Sprint) that would be okay with this.
Verizon is a big bag of irony when it comes to LTE and pricing.
They're promising fast speeds, which for most people means streaming video and audio, but their pricing is too expensive to do much media streaming.
If I had deep pockets, Verizon LTE as a mobile hotspot would be great. Sadly, I don't have deep pockets. I think Clear/Sprint are currently the best options at the moment.
I'm not sure if I'm even going to upgrade to LTE. 3G seems to do alright, and I'm worried that LTE will be a battery suck. Battery is more important to me than speed.

LTE (and other 4G tech) is very much so a battery hog. There's no way that you can have that big jump in bandwidth and connection without affecting battery life until they expand the technology more (remember, the move from 2G to 3G was met with the same concerns).
I think anyone using an Evo 4G or Thunderbolt will quickly tell you how much WiMax or LTE is killing their battery.
ive got the mifi 3g/4g gadget and 4G and 3G work wonderfully inside the house in my experience. also ive tried it inside the company building and 4G works well.. it does help im in a major 4G city.. but the 4G works quite well indoors. it has about a 28-32 foot range so you could sit it near an external wall facing 4g coverage and be set.
i have used the novatel with a laptop, xoom, first gen ipod touch. definitely a good option. there is also the overdrive pro which has 4G verizon and att have the same mifi box also..
the key here is to make sure your primary location has ample supply of 4G and your set for unlimited. again the spees ive seen are quite nice.

Specifically Sprints 4G WiMax doesn't do well indoors, because of the specific spectrum it uses. Verizon, ATT, and Tmo use different tech and spectrum that has better building penetration...haha...i said penetration. But if you got it to work, cool.
yes mr. carpenter i understand your post and i do understand the cons of wimax inside buildings, hence why i said it works for me as im in a dense 4G area, so the two main places i frequent has 4G abundantly. it surely does fall off rather quickly inside structures however the results ive had are just superb, especially when its unlimited. sprints coming out with a 10gb plan this sunday and releasing new bundled plans so i should be able to get 10gb of 3G for 70 bux.
I've been using the Sprint Overdrive since last summer. Although I wouldn't recommend this particular device the 4G service itself is excellent. The Overdrive is plagued with well documented problems. When it actually connects and stays connected the service is fast and solid, as with the 4G service on my Epic. As for using WiMax 4G inside, I've found it needs to be positioned for optimal signal, I set mine on top of the refrigerator. I may eventually switch to the new MiFi unit, but I'm waiting to see how the reviewers feel about it first.
Better off rooting verizon's thunderbolt...

Consumer: "but my unlimited plan gives me the RIGHT to download 300GB/s of data each month!"
Cellular Industry: "yeah right"
Data Caps.
I would personally thank iPhone users for abusing the snot out of AT&T's unlimited data plans for all of this.
I have been thinking for a month or so about activating my xoom instead of continue to tether it to my droid x. I found that like many, I rarely used my phone any more other than to talk on it. Plus, with verizon starting to crack down on tethering, I thought the time was right. I wasn't about to pay for two data plans, thats crazy to me.
So, I sold my droid x to a friend for $100 and went to verizon and bought an LG Octane and activated my Xoom. No more worrying about tethering and trying to get phone calls at the same time, I love it. No more worrying about wireless tether cutting in and out. No... the Octane is no where near the phone that the X is but I only use it to talk and text... and I love being able to use my xoom on the road for everything else.
Anyone else done something like this?
i too have a droid x and tether it to my wifi xoom. I would get rid of my xoom, but my kids use it to watch movies on, while i watch on my xoom. I couldnt do what you have done, as i dont need internet access that often.
I too activated my xoom. It makes it so much less an issue. I have a dx too but could NEVER give it up. I just bit the bullet and got the plan.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
I did this the other way around, I use my Xoom alot, but I got the Wifi Xoom, and to keep work and play separate - I keep all work stuff on my Samsung Epic and all the play stuff on my Xoom.
I switched also, I use the xoom as a hot spot to tether my phone when i want data on it.
It's interesting the different ways people use their phones and the xoom. I guess that's what makes Android great, the flexability. I just can't imagine paying for data on a phone and the xoom. I have to $$$, I just don't want to spend it that way. lol
I'd probably do the same if the data plans weren't so expensive. I mean 3 GB for 35 a month? Really? I currently have an Epic 4G on an unlimited plan in which I can tether 4G. It works really well. But to be honest I don't even use it that much. Most of the time I am near Wifi so using 3G makes no sense in most situations. When the LTE upgrade becomes available, I may take another look and see if it makes more sense. I love my xoom though.
Having Sprint is great because we can tether 4G and it works great. I have a WiFi Xoom and tether from my EVO Shift 4G. Perfection.

Yea if I had sprint I would have probably just tethered to my phone also because Sprint doesn't seem to be cracking down on it like AT&T and Verizon are. Plus, with it being 4G you don't get cut off if you received a phone call while tether. That absolutely drive me crazy.
Also, Sprint sucks in my area so I had to go with Verizon.
