[Q] Sprint Hotspot app on Evo? - Xoom General

I'm running mikfroyo 4.5, and I'm stoked about this rumor of the xoom wifi hitting sams club next month for 540. I loved the demo unit at the best buy closest to me, but of course in that one spot I didnt get 3g and I didnt bother trying 4g (pretty scarce in CT). Can anyone confirm that the sprint mobile hotspot app can give wifi to the xoom? I was reading another thread where the wifi tether app didnt so im a tad nervous.

I know the evo works with the xoom, but I use the built in cm hotspot.

I am running the Sprint Lovers ROM on my EVO and have no issues giving WiFi to my Xoom. Cause there is no way I paying for the ridiculous data rates with Verizon, especially since I have unlimited 3G/4G through Sprint.

The issue using the Evo with the Xoom is the people using the Wireless Tether app, which in that case puts the Evo into 'Ad-Hoc' mode, whereas using built in tether on a AOSP ROM, for example, makes a normal 'Infrastructure' mode that the Xoom can connect to.
As I understand it, that is.

sorry someone answered this for me on the evo forum thanks..

I use fresh and setup wireless tether on 4g and the xoom flies with it.

Free Hotspot?

What happened to the hotspot free for a month that was discussed all over the internet prior to launch?
Im not sure what happened with that but if you don't mind rooting the phone the wireless tether.apk works for the Evo
I used Toast's root and it doesn't work with it...
there is an update
but it would be nice if sprints was hacked since it acts like a true router so my zune can see it but wifi tether is ad hoc
I ran the unrevoked root over the Toast root and now the wireless tethering works great! Using it to send this from my laptop!
I have the hotspot for free right now. is that cause I did the update? Ive pinky tried connecting it took one device so far. It works pretty damn well if I don't say so myself. So theyre offering it free for a month?
i think the free hotspot for a month thing only works if you are in a 4g market.....
My Sprint Hotspot is working and has been since launch day, and I didn't get the tethering.
I'ma lucky one I guess
I think it is free until July
Tethering
I talked to a Sprint rep today, some people got signed up for the $29 hotpot plan automatically, those who are using the hotspot app might want to check their sprint phone bill to validate.

Your ipod will not see it till they get infrastructure mode baked in any moment now they say

I'm pretty sure the "free month" was just a bug and that it was going to be a month until they fixed it. Also I'm pretty sure it was just 4G tethering, not 3G.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/evo-4g-on-sale-at-8am-on-june-4th-with-one-month-free-4g-mobile/
EDIT:
Interesting note... The words from Sprint at the bottom don't seen to condemn other tethering options. They just say that the $29/mo option comes with more reliability and the ability to tether up to 8 devices. Which is a valid point.
I wonder who the intended audience was. Probably more for sales people to sell the tethering option to folks than admitting that other options exist.

[Q] Sprint doesn't allow 4G tethering?

Currently using Mikshift (latest) with BC's 1.8 kernel, although i don't really know if these has anything to do with my problem.
I have 4G on, and i have a fairly consistent "fair" connection. however, whenever i try to do a wired tether, as soon as i select the "tether" option on the list, the 4g connection drops, tries to reconnect and fails, then reconnects again as soon as i get out of tether mode.
tethering does work, but only with a 3G connection
is this a sprint policy, or is there something going on here? I'm paying $10 extra for stupid 4G, i better be able to tether with it.
Tethering with 4G right now, using PdaNet. Do it all the time.
You can't tether 4g with the built in sprint tether, you need to use a third party app. And for some reason the free third party apps don't work in 3g, so you have to bounce back and forth.

I actually just opted to just 3rd party, easytether. Anyone know why 4g cannot be tethered? Is it just sprint being stingy?

Wireless tether seems to work fine in both 3g and 4g modes for me, no problems here I haven't seen any type of cap.

Actually the $10 for Premium Data is what everyone now pays who either activated a new smartphone, placed one on their MIN or upgraded to one on of after 01/30/11. You were fed a nice pile of steaming BS thinking the extra $10 was for 4G. Think about all those customers who don't live within the Clear WiMAX footprint nor travel to one. They too forked out $10/month. I'd suggest getting Easy Tether Pro from the market and use that instead of the default app on the HTC EVO Shift 4G.
Sprint does not cap data usage on 4G devices. It is really unlimited...for now.
Not through the actuall device I get good speeds through the phone but when I use the wireless tethering to my laptop it doesn't even let me download anything past 200 KBs that's pretty slow considering when I use the phone it downloads way way faster than that.

Bye bye Droid X... hello xoom xoom!

I have been thinking for a month or so about activating my xoom instead of continue to tether it to my droid x. I found that like many, I rarely used my phone any more other than to talk on it. Plus, with verizon starting to crack down on tethering, I thought the time was right. I wasn't about to pay for two data plans, thats crazy to me.
So, I sold my droid x to a friend for $100 and went to verizon and bought an LG Octane and activated my Xoom. No more worrying about tethering and trying to get phone calls at the same time, I love it. No more worrying about wireless tether cutting in and out. No... the Octane is no where near the phone that the X is but I only use it to talk and text... and I love being able to use my xoom on the road for everything else.
Anyone else done something like this?
i too have a droid x and tether it to my wifi xoom. I would get rid of my xoom, but my kids use it to watch movies on, while i watch on my xoom. I couldnt do what you have done, as i dont need internet access that often.
I too activated my xoom. It makes it so much less an issue. I have a dx too but could NEVER give it up. I just bit the bullet and got the plan.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
I did this the other way around, I use my Xoom alot, but I got the Wifi Xoom, and to keep work and play separate - I keep all work stuff on my Samsung Epic and all the play stuff on my Xoom.
I switched also, I use the xoom as a hot spot to tether my phone when i want data on it.
It's interesting the different ways people use their phones and the xoom. I guess that's what makes Android great, the flexability. I just can't imagine paying for data on a phone and the xoom. I have to $$$, I just don't want to spend it that way. lol
I'd probably do the same if the data plans weren't so expensive. I mean 3 GB for 35 a month? Really? I currently have an Epic 4G on an unlimited plan in which I can tether 4G. It works really well. But to be honest I don't even use it that much. Most of the time I am near Wifi so using 3G makes no sense in most situations. When the LTE upgrade becomes available, I may take another look and see if it makes more sense. I love my xoom though.
Having Sprint is great because we can tether 4G and it works great. I have a WiFi Xoom and tether from my EVO Shift 4G. Perfection.

Yea if I had sprint I would have probably just tethered to my phone also because Sprint doesn't seem to be cracking down on it like AT&T and Verizon are. Plus, with it being 4G you don't get cut off if you received a phone call while tether. That absolutely drive me crazy.
Also, Sprint sucks in my area so I had to go with Verizon.

[Q] Wifi Tether with 4G Speed

I'm running stock Froyo (rooted) and used Wifi Tether 3.0 pre 12 through 14. I can successfully get my phone to tether internet to my Asus Transformer but I can't seem to get over 3G speeds.
Wifi Tether seems to crash when I have 4G enabled so I have to start it up with 4G turned off. After Wifi Tether is enabled an my transformer is connected, I can then start up 4G. However it doesn't seem to make a difference is speed.
I tested my phone's 4G with the speed test app and alone it hits about 9mb-10mb. Once tether is enabled I get 500kb-1.2mb.
Anyone else having this issue or have any suggestions?
Many Thanks
Unfortunately, my experience is the same. The 4G on tether gives 3G speeds
Wifi tether 3 pre 14. Did exactly what you said. Activated on 3g then once it was up and running I turn on 4g..

That was taken at the end of viewing a You Tube Video so it had already slowed down. I can have multiple devices (had 5 linked up to it at a coffee shop) without any lag what so ever. It was actually giving better performance than the coffee shop's Wifi. That's why everyone was trying to grab my signal. I had forgotten to set my Wifi Encryption. EDIT..the Wifi 3 pre 14 actually gives twice the 4g tethering speed than my buddy's Evo that's running the latest and greatest ROM they have. We constantly use mine instead of his...EDIT 2..I actually have perfect 4g service and pay for Hotspot and this is the first and only time I have considered stopping that service as the Wifi Tethers have always been **** compared to it but not anymore

weird, I'm on pre 14 now and get garbage speeds. I'm going to look into a few customer roms to see if I can get bluetooth tether to work and I'll see if there's a speed increase there. I've never been able to get bluetooth tether to work on stock froyo, tried about 3 different programs.....

Thought I read somewhere that there was a "caution" with these newer builds...don't remember what it was. Is it true they also offer regular infrastructure mode? And does it have security/mac filtering?
Don't want to mess anything up with my market version. Had it hooked up to CM7 nook color (1200 MHZ ocerclock) w/ GPS tether on top...... sweet G Maps driving Nav!! Hard to miss a turn with the 7" gigantic GPS!

I haven't had a problem while running pre12 on Midnight 5.2. I normally see >3.5m on 4g service streaming from Netflix to my tablet.
So I flashed my phone with midNIGHT rom 5.3 and running Wifi Tether Pre 14 and now I'm getting between 2.2mb - 3.5mb down. Not exactly blazing fast but definately a far cry from my original 500kb lol. Still better than paying $30 for the actual tethering fee.

What are you using for speed tests? I've run speed tests with the Ookla/speedtest.net app, and gotten pitiful speeds, then fired up netflix and saw 4x the speed.

I have tested with Ookla and also CNET's speed test. The speed between the two are consistant as well as the download speeds that I see when downloading files.

Sprint and tethering?

Hey everyone, I just bought my EVO 4g and the main reason I bought it was because of sprints unlimited data. However, after I bought it, sprint lady tells me they charge extra for tethering. If I run cm7 and use the tethering app, will they catch me?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I have never heard of anyone being penalized by Sprint for tethering with a rooted phone before but that does not mean it has not happened. I do use tethering once in a while when I am away from home and need data to my laptop. If you are not going crazy (don't run bittorrent on a tethered phone) then you are probably ok. You do have "unlimited" data (what ever that means) but if you start using more than 10GB a month you may attract attention.

Search through the threads, this question has been asked many times before and see if its worth it to you... Its worth it to alot of other members in here... So root and tether away if you like but dont over do it and enjoy or give Sprint $30 a month and dont worry about a thing... The Choice Is Yours!
i tether all the time. no issues.....so far
Yep pretty much just don't go crazy and you should be fine.

You have unlimited web surfing, email, and pictures. Running up excessive amounts of data by downloading or uploading movies, hosting video games, non-stop usage of a video camera, as well as tethering are all violations of your contract.
Sprint cares more about excessive data usage (whether you are paying for tethering or not) than who is tethering without paying for it, because too much data running through the system affects service. Tethering is just running data to your computer from your phone. They charge the $30 because if they did not, more people would use their phones as their primary internet and run up enormous amounts of data (I DON'T THINK SPRINT AGREES WITH THE 235GB CAP PER MONTH THAT COMCAST ALLOWS). The people who have been flagged by Sprint were all using large amounts of data, and quite a few were actually paying for tethering.
I tether exclusively...i download torrents, music, and everything...been doing it since June 4th 2010...no problems! Tether on friend!
I never paid the $30/month and I tether 15-20GB every month. Never had any problems with Sprint.
I also have an employee discount and only have to pay $60/month. Not bad.
I'm a light tetherer but a heavy data user. I use 6-10gb monthly and I have since I started my sprint contract 4 months ago. Just keep down your roaming as sprint allows only 300mb of off network roaming.

It's just important to be responsible about it.
There's nothing wrong with tethering once in a while when it's necessary, there is something wrong with using it as your home internet connection and not paying the extra fee.
It's important to understand that when you abuse the system you're not just hurting us, you're hurting yourself. Why? Because you encourage Sprint to go the route of others. And if they do that, you won't have the option.
Ive EASILY tethered on 4G 100+GB since May. Ofcourse, 4G is ABSOLUTELY unlimited no matter what. I dont think they monitor 4G as much as 3G, since the 4G comes from Clear, really. I dont tether 3G much at all. But yea, tether away....just dont do anything illegal.

Sprint store employees try to sell sprint's $30 a month hotspot and will tell you that is the only way to tether. I do not have this service, and I tether like a madman and have never been charged. I've used PDAnet, wifi tether, and the cm7 built in hot spot option. You have no need to worry, tether away.

I have tethered as well and had no issues. Mainly use it only when I need to if there isn't any wifi options when I am not at home or work.
I use a program called PDANet.
Search Android Market, Free App
If you are by 4g when you tether then knock yourself out. They don't monitor 4g at all so u can do whatever. But if you use 3g they track the amount of data but its still unlimited. Just like everyone else said. Don't go crazy with the 3g and you will be in the clear.
P.s. I tethered while out of town for a month in a very good 4g area. Easily used 40+ gigabytes of data during that month (torrents and whatnot) and nothing. No message, no extra charge. Zilch. So if your in 4g ur in the clear as far as I'm concerned.
Edit: btw I use the wireless tether app that's available in the market

Thanks for the info, there's a wimax tower literally around the corner from my apartment, so I'm planning to use my new epic 4g touch to tether extensively, but I was worried about them scolding me I don't plan to use 3g much at all since 4g coverage is pretty good.
