Rom where GPS Works well! - Vibrant General

I just want to throw this out there.
I love this rom. I've been experimenting with all the newer roms, 2.2.1, 2.3.2 etc etc. It seems like I have real problems with the gps navigation with the newer roms. So I reinstalled this rom to test it out and I had forgot how well this rom works. The gps connected quickly, no problems at all. Not having gps navigation was bugging the sh** it out me, so thank God this is a steady Rom to go back to.

Funny, every new rom I have used in the last month, none really have any GPS problems.......... maybe Seal beach is stealing all your bandwidth........

Tried like 10 2.1 roms, and went back to 1.5

Hi -
I´ve tried appr. 10-15, 2.1 rom´s now.
BeHero, Eris-Clean, SenseHero, NeoRom, Legendary, Villian, HeroDroid and som of the Senseports .... (several versions .....)
I must admit it has been a lot of fun trying this out
But there is always issues, and stuff about these roms that does not work proberbly. HW beeing poorly adressed, FC issues, things missing, stuff mot working.
Ill put my pros and cons here for your consideration
2.1 Pros:
New market place, with info on updates
Eye candy (like the 7 homescreens seen on one page,) I only used this for "showoff"
Brut maps (Google navigation, for none US/GB people)
On legend ... the smart text selection tool (for copying and sharing text)
2.1 Cons:
FC issues (several bugs which differ regarding of your 2.1 rom)
HW working poor, (Battery doesent work in any ROM, Sensors rarely work or is poor, GPS issues which might need reboot to work.
Cam working BAD (almost every 2.1 rom)
After using a 2.1 ROM for a while, it gets buggy, (strange behaviour)
I have installed MoDaCo 3.2, based on 1.5 now.
Really fast, none of the issues mentioned above on this one.
And I must say that none of the 2.1 roms is any fasther than this one
But thx for the fun trying 2.1 roms
BR.

Totally agree with you. I've been through most of the 2.1 ROMs, and am now switching back to 1.5.
same here but I back on Kimera 1.8 overclock
Not for development section! GENERAL OR Q&A!
I do agree on some of those things....
Battery doesnt work??WTF how are you using your phone?sensors have worked fine for me on all 2.1 roms, did you have orientation turned on?
I'm looking forward to the new super villain hero Tom now
Great - now stop filling the development section with crap!
same here.....after all those i got tired ... using kimera 1.8 @710mhz......
Thread moved to General
Russ
i have not had any ill effects on my phone since installing sense 2.2. everything is working and it runs like a dream! quick, smooth no FC yet and i have had it for a week.

what he says. I don't get the complaining about 2.1 while it isn't even released yet. Most things work fine or need a little tweaking or extra work (like flashing the radio for gps)
Consider yourself happy being part of a community where we can test, give feedback and enjoy the great things rom cookers create for us.

NEED help
Hello dear devs, i have an HTC Hero, Rooted, with stock 1.5 ROM, tried some other ROMS, didnt really liket them , put fast SD card and stock ROM became really fast, anyways, for some specific Rom there was a requirement to change the radio, i flashed it, then flashed rom, used it for couple of days, nandroid backuped and restored the stock rom.
Previousely i had GPS working on google maps, the notification bar showed the GPS ON icon when it was on, and google maps worked perfectly, now i got myself Copilot Live sat nav, now the GPS doesn't turn on, i cant see google maps, neither the GPS icon shows when i turn it on.
Firmware version " 1.5
Baseband version 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18
Kernel version 2.6.27-8dd6deee
[email protected] )
Build number: 2.73.405.5 146733 CL#61267 release keys
Software version 1.0.0.A6288
The copilot shows maps, roads beautifully, (i live in Lithuania btw) but cant determine my position. I'll be off on a journey to Europe with my car in about a week, and i need a sat-nav, thought my Handset woudl go, so my question is, is it possible for me to get GPS working, or should i make some formats, restore factory settings ect. Thank you, hope to get a fast reply
I am seeing some unhappy hero users here. Yes its me the jerk.
Anyhow if you want a rom that outperforms the stock 1.5 one try Cronos Droid

Swapping my SGS with a new one.

So I've got one of the many Vibrants with the flaky GPS, and none of the fixes out there seem to improve the problem. My local T-Mo store is understanding and quite willing to swap it with a new one since I'm still within the 14 day policy. The only catch is I want to put the phone as close to stock as possible before I do the trade so they can't say it was something I did to it. Right now I've rooted deodexed, and I've got clockwork ROM manager going. I've also deleted almost all the stock cruft and swapped the calendar / camera apps. Because I was so eager to make it "mine", I also failed to make any backups BUT my wife happens to have a totally stock SGS from which I can scavange from but I'd like to do it without having to root it or anything. Is this possible? If not would thread 739091 ("True Stock 2.1 firmware for vibrant"; sorry I can't post links since my account here is still new) get me there?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475&highlight=stock is what you're looking for. Just flash this with Odin and you'll be fully unrooted.
Awesome, I really appreciate that. I'm not timid when it comes to making the phone my own (I was an early adopter of CyanogenMod for my old G1) but I just returned from a deployment and the whole 'scene' has changed a lot more than I expected lol.
Hehe. you might want to give the new T-Mobile Vibrant firmware that was leaked, it fixes the GPS problem (result may vary). Returning your SGS for a new one isn't going to fix your problem. It's not hardware related, its firmware.
An exchange won't fix your GPS issues anyway so you mine as well keep the one you have. Trust me, we try to swap them out customers all the time at my store.... It's a known issue and Samsung is SUPPOSED to be sending us an OTA soon

Hmmm, quite a few people I'd talked with locally that have the vibrant said swapping worked for them. Is it possible that newer firmware has been released for phones with a newer "birth" date than mine? Then again who should I trust more, people who hardly utilize their phones, or the people who drool over the prospect of new mods and hacks? hehe. I guess I'll just call T-Mo back and let them know I wont be bothering with a swap after all.

Hey, my pleasure. If nothing else, I have the Army to thank for bringing me out to Hawai'i and giving me the chance to meet my now wife hehe.
ALL out of the box Vibrant's have the same firmware. You need to update to the newest firmware version, it works really well. GPS is better than it is on my CLIQ.
I dunno, i've heard reports of GPS working perfect out of the box for some, and the new firmware doesn't seem to do much for my GPS,
10m accuracy at most unless I leave gps on for about an hour and maybe i'll get 6-7m accuracy, but driving, it SKIPS, (still at 10m) instead of gliding along like my G1 did.
So i'm considering perhaps swapping mine.

10M of accuracy is not bad and if you want to get technical, GMaps interprets the data differently. What shows in GMaps as 10 meters will show up as 7 under GPS test. I've got my Vibrant here at 6 Meters under GPSTest and 10 under GMaps. Get a grip people.

I wont speak for Qwerty, but in my case I was LUCKY to get 10m accuracy; usually the best I could get was 40m; usually after 5-10 minutes of 'searching' and when you're driving an unfamiliar city such as Washington DC Like I was this past week, 40m is far too inaccurate for navigation. Your 'get a grip' is completely tasteless and uncalled for in this thread.
That said, I took zephiK's advice and just flashed the new 2.1 (thread 780935), and I must say its a lot better. I can get a 10m fix indoors in less than 5 seconds from a cold start (EG without GMaps knowing where I am at all); before being indoors I would never get less than a 1000m 'fix'. As soon as I get mine fully tweaked, I'll be sure to flash my wifes phone as well since she's got the same issue.

Yeah, i'm still considering doing the swap, sometime this week, perhaps even today, got up this morning, and phone was off, (Charging Battery Symbol on the screen),
I'm not running any of the custom roms nor am i OCing. Just worried if I do the swap I may end up with even more problems. I don't know what it is with the Samsung phones, if perhaps a lot of the phones have hardware problems or what. I have only used the original stock rom, and the leaked samsung rom.
I don't mean to be picky with my phone, but I remember my 2 year old G1 getting easily 3m lock as soon as i open up the maps inside my room, and navigating with it, was extremely accurate as well. I also never had restart issues with the phone, till after dropping the thing really hard, and then even the restart thing went away.
Today, I'm lucky to get even 40m lock again, on that same leaked updated firmware. My gripe with the samsung vibrant is that there seems to be some sort of hardware problem with the phone and samsung is not saying a thing about it.
I'm telling you guys... don't bother with a swap... I work in a very high volume store and have seen almost every customer come back with GPS issues. We won't even swap them anymore for customers because TMO has listed it as a known issue, and Samsung has announced the firmware update soon... A swap WILL NOT fix the issue, but if you decide to swap it, don't go whining to us our TMO about how you "keep exchanging it and none of them work..." They know this, and YOU know it.

[Q] Can someone tell me I'm not alone?

Haha I see so many people complaining about bricked vibrants, apps not working, .zip files not working right, market issues, bad battery life and screwy bugs...
Am i a lucky guy who just got one of the "few" working vibrants??
I got my vibrant on release day from a preorder at radioshack...
It was not hardware locked and came with the original firmware.
Im currently running bionix 1.9.1 with the kk oc/uv kernel, launcher pro plus and have 76 user apps installed and this rom still keeps up. 2g is kept on until i need to use 3g. (2g 12 hours, 3g on the rest)
I previously installed oclf on all roms but this rom you dont need one, even with the cpu running at 200 MHz and 1000 MHz.
I have a livewallpaper running, no led notifer on for my sms, beautiful widgets, weatherbug and youtube all on 2 hour update and my battery lasts from 7am off the charger until 10 pm when im home with about 35% remaining with brightness on the lowest setting.
My gps works on spot , unfortunately not in my basement where my room is located. Wifi and bluetooth also work perfect.
Ive softbricked once when flashing a cappy .zip and just got into recovery and performed a nandroid
So whats up how many of you guys have a awesome, powerful vibrant like me?
I guess I am also one of the lucky ones
Mine always worked fine. Not hardware locked. GPS always worked too. The only problems I've had with it have been inflicted by the user (i.e. ME)
I think most Vibrants sold are working properly. I think the representation of folks who come to this forum in search of ways to "fix" their phones is disproportionate.
your not alone
I have had no problem with my phone I have flashed it with 3 different roms and it has been awesome. The only thing I have noticed is the gps does not tell me when I have a satellite lock but is is always accurate to 10-15 meters
My Vibrant is working like how I wanted it, the only issue is definitely GPS. Although, spotty, it at least work at the moment. I just wish it is more accurate so when my phone gets stolen, I have a fighting chance to get it back (via one of the many great anti-thief programs).
mine runs great
I guess you can consider me a lucky one as well.
I got mine on a release day back in July, and aside GPS issues at the beginning I had no complaints. Running Fusion Bionix ROM, and couldn't be happier.
I will def skip the Foryo OTA even if it comes before a working Froyo ROM is available from the brilliant devs on here.
At my work there are 5 of use with Vibrants and they all run fine. Honestly people who have issues are typically going to be more vocal than people who have no issues. So it seems like there are rampant issues with the Vibrant when in fact its only a minority of people having issues.
i ordered mine the day it came out (couldn't preorder cause on an employee account). gps wasn't that great, but worked most the time. rooted it and got rid of bloatware, still just unreliability of gps. started changing things like startup/shutdown animations, ji2 gps, and stuff, no problems. started flashing roms and am on bionix 1.9.1 oc, no problems.
My box date is 7/11/2010. Mine has been rock solid and not hardware locked. Love this phone. Fast, sexy, and unbrickable. The only problems I've had were caused by my own shenanigans.
Running a custom ROM should exclude you from voting. If you have to re-engineer a device to get what you paid for, you aren't getting what you paid for....
-bZj
Mine had the hardware lock and GPS issues, but both are fixed now. I've been lucky in that everything else I've thrown at it works fine. Overclocking is fine, voodoo is fine. The thing is smooth as butter and battery life is pretty damn good now.
Remember people happy with their phones don't usually post.

No i don't think so , ive had android phones in the past and since the vibrant was gonna be a large seller for tmobile i expected a large development community like we are seeing and expected roms. So i bought the phone intentionally to mod it but thanks!
Also since most people on XDA have rooted their phone, you can expect they will have more problems than the average consumer. It's one of the downsides of modding. I don't think stock phones have been soft bricking only modded ones.

Read the numerous posts here about JI6 OTA update from the users that just received their phone, some of them were sad pandas when they had to stare at the Vibrant screen after they click update button.
If you read enough, and comfortable enough to mod your phone soft bricking it should the least of your concern

Possible new GPS fix

Ok I hope I dont get flamed for this but it worked for me maybe it will for others. I just got my GPS working after getting off the phone with Tmobile support. I had it working on eclair and it stopped after froyo. I kind of hinted to them as to what I needed done and they did it! Now I know exactly what to ask for if this ever happens again. BTW Tmobile is the best hope we dont lose them to ATT.
Ok so whoever performed the gps script that is out there, the gps restore app or anything else on pretty much any rom and didnt get it to work can try calling Tmobile and asking them to restart your network connection. You will have to use a phone other than the vibrant. They will ask you to do a battery pull while the phone is on, they will do something on their end then ask you to turn your phone back on. When it turns back on the GPS should work, It did for me. If it doesnt work please dont flame me, it was worth a shot. If it helped then your welcome!
Thanks, any info for better performance is welcomed in my book!

The reason I thought to share this was because like many people on many threads I noticed that the fixed didnt work and many dont want to open their phones and perform the hardware fix. But with this simple method maybe I can save a few people from prying open their phones and causing havoc. But it worked for me, now I get good gps reception, enough to use to get places with.
I've had great success with bionix v and the gingerbread gps fix. Stock bionix v will have gps loosing signal every few minutes. With the gingerbread gps fix, there are less locked birds but they have much higher snr and I don't loose signal. Using waze now with those mods I don't jump around the map like I did with stock bionix v
On this rom im running, i get a lock in less than a second and a stunning accuracy.

I've never been able to speak to anyone at Tmo who would halfway even understand me trying to explain to them the technique you just used. Not to say it wouldn't work but I don't think most of their reps would be capable of doing what you are suggesting even if they were 'able' to do it! Last guy I dealt with was a complete joke, kept putting me on hold and then would come back and say something like he was talking to someone else! I swear he was talking to 3 different people at once, putting people on hold, and not being able to remember who was on what line! Nightmare. Ugh. But hey, if you got a couple hours to waste trying and it works for ya then by all means go right ahead!

Actually you tell them your gps doesnt work and that it did before the froyo update. When it didnt work on eclair tell them that they had you pull the battery while the phone was on and then they sent something to your phone or reset the network. Idk who you talk to but I did this yesterday and it took less than a half hour. Worse comes to worst you get the android "experts" to do it.

Actually my GPS NEVER worked until i spent an hour on the phone *****ing and another hour on live chat until they swapped my phone with what i believe is a brand new one and now the GPS works perfectly! It's definitely a hardware problem. People do the hardware fix, it works, I swapped mine for a new one, it works. I didn't feel like popping my phone open and I'm no good with a soldering gun so why should I have to do the hardware fix myself?
My GPS works respectably well, maybe it just depends on manufacturing date.

UPDATE - ROMs with solid GPS

What is the current opinion on ROMS that provide stable GPS for longer trips?
For a long time there nealry all cooked ROMS could not get a stable GPS lock for longer trips.
Has this finally changed and some ROMS finally have this sorted out?
Try them and find out? Results may vary really. Some people never had issues to begin with, some found ways to improve it, and some (ie. me) went and bought a dedicated GPS device.
Try the 2.1 LiquidSense Rom, I had good luck with it. But the Hero just really isn't made with GPS in mind. Every time I've tried to use the GPS in the last 2 years on 2 different Heros it usually ends with terrible overheating and loss of GPS lock. It just doesn't have the hardware
Sent from my HERO200 using xda premium
A month ago I relied solely on my Hero to get me from NYC to upstate New York (around 5 hour drive). On the way there, I was charging it the whole time. I lost GPS a few times times after about 3 hours in, causing me to reboot each time. On the way back, I decided not to charge it unless I needed to. GPS was never lost on the way back! I'm pretty sure it's an overheating issue. I was using the latest deck 1.3 rom with 10sep jaybob kernal, with the latest maps at the time. I would recommend the good old aosp rom which been the most reliable rom I have ever used for GPS, or anything.
As with any GPS, on a long drive, keep printed directions handy!
