[Q] Backup data with non responding touchscreen? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I didnt find any related thread to my issue that discussed a backup process without interfering with the touchscreen.
First let me explain my issue:
Basically like many of us my HD2's touchscreen suddenly stopped working. The only solution to this problem seems to be a repair by HTC, so before sending the phone I have to revert back to original state (ROM, SPL etc.). I already read alot about that and it seems like many people had this issue but none had any backup concerns.
So here I am, I'm on Android (via SD Card, NAND is WP7) and want to backup all the data from Android but as the touchscreen ain't responding I have no clue how to do that (apart from backuping the SD-card, but that won't backup the internal memory right? atleast I'm not finding certain save-files from games like Angry Birds).
Anyone know how the data without touching the screen?
Edit: just came up with the idea of trying to control my phone via pc. I'm going to use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=663390
Edit2: Worked perfectly! Just follow the instructions on the other thread incase you have the same issue. You have to update the sdk after downloading it, also adb.exe is located under android-sdk-windows/platform-tools now. Case solved. I used Titanium Backup btw...

best backup solutions please

ok so all take the chance i know this has been posted a lot on this forum but to be honest the information i obtained from all the threads is not sufficient enough to solve the problem which is IS IT POSSIBLE TO CARRY OUT A FULL BACKUP AND RESTORE ON THE HD USING THE VARIOUS BACKUP SOFTWARE THAT WE HAVE SUCH AS SPB BACKUP, SPRITE ETC.. surely there must be a solution out there somewhere to carry out a full backup and restore because now that we have everything moving over at the hd rom development forum with new roms everyday surely a complete backup and restore of the entire system of the HD is now more important than ever because there is now a lot of software for us to use on our HD so please dont flame me for bringing this up again but its just a desparete attempt to get help. perhaps this way, the programers can then help to make some software that makes it possible to make a full backup and restore on the HD, or even maybe starting a poll or something with people stating what software they have successively used to perform a complete backup and restore thank you again guys and to be gratefull for this great website that makes it possible to provide us with a better device i will make my donation on 27/01/09 thank you xda, lots of love from UK
I think your . button is jammed LOL
I've been wondering the same thing, really. I'm pretty new to these devices. How do people cope with new ROMs coming out all the time as far as installed software? Is there a way to install everything you want including all the dang activation keys, then make a backup that will re-install everything once you update the ROM?
Not sure whether there is an easy answer. I don't think you can save all the various settings - but that does not take long. Place as many as your apps on the storage card a possible. Make sure you keep the original installation cab files on the storage card.
The difficult one (for me) is the bookmarks in Opera. I now keep the URLs on an email on my Pc and resend it after a hard reset. They each have to be opened and saved as bookmarks but at least no typing.
If there is an easier way I would be keen to hear as well.
I use Sprite Backup 6.5 for full restores after ROM Updates, and Level 1 (Personal data and programs) updates have never failed. Tested quite a few non-official ROMs from this forum, never had a problem. Never tried restore after a hardreset, never did one.
i think the best backup-restore program is Spb backup restore. I have used Sprite but it always fails me when it comes to restore.

Does anyone know what's the different between the 3 levels ?
Let's say I have my ROM and programs running perfectly but I wanna try out new cab files .. I will do a back-up and if anything happens I restore with level 3 ??
My vote is Sprite Backup. Have used it from many years and each update improves on the last. It is stable, functional and easy to use.

Strange Crash

I have been running d-two's rom for a while now and it is working great for me. Last night I tried to connect to live messenger and it went a bit crazy. Now it will only get to the today screen and then it hangs. I am looking around the site for a solution but I just wanted to ask here as well..
I know a hard reset will get me going again, problem is some text messages from last night that I really really dont want to lose.
I think it may be relatedto xpuscaler, but I dont really know. Activesync will not connect
The ideas I think may help me are:
1. can i use something like tty to get into the machine and either take the sms and contacts file or remove xpuscaler from the startup?
2. Can i use the clean registry without the format storage option from the hard reset menu? would this destroy my contacts and sms?
Please help
sim cards can store messages and as far as i know windows mobile (2k2 & 2k3) saves contacts to the sim card. check it in another phone if the stuff is stored there and if it is HR or reflash your unit.
1. as far as i know, there is no way to access files or folders remotely unless the device is fully booted, so, no mtty, no accessing in bootloader mode
2. yes you can use that option, that is a pretty good idea actually, because while the registry might contain startup information, it does not contain your sms or contacts.
another thing is, always keep your contacts synced, so they can never be the issue, and for sms, i recommend either to sync them too, or regularly make a backup with pimbackup, of course, this advise does not help you right now, but it might avoid issues like this in the future. since we are not carrying around normal phones like nokia, SE, ... and play around with custom roms, we must always be ready to perform a hard reset.
but back to the topic, unfortunately, the BA offers no "Safe Mode", as known of windows pcs, so avoiding the startup. you can try tricking the BA to do something else first, if the registry clearing does not work, you could put an extrom to your SD card and maybe the extrom startup will be first. maybe an extrom containing the same or a newer version of xcpuscalar will uninstall the current version and install the new version with the standard settings, and since the extrom shuts down everything else, it might just work.
and kind as i am, i actually built an extrom for you, just unzip and copy to the sd card, if it does not work, rename the folder from EXTROM to 2577 and it will work.
here you have the download link, it's pretty small: http://rapidshare.com/files/335389705/EXTROM.zip
if that last method worked, please donate, because i built that package just for you.
Thanks Chef,
I am having a go with your extrom now..
In the time since last post I have been able to get it working at the today screen but nothing will load.. maybe 520mhz made the processor die? have been running at full speed for a few weeks now..
You are right about the backup, I usually have pimbackup automated to backup to my sd everyday, but I hadnt got around to it since I installed this ROM. Typical luck! I wouldnt really care but I have some important sms that I need to recover..
@ares93 unfortunatly I dont save to my sim card as I have too many contacts to do that. And I dont think my sim could store my four years of sms that I seem to still have...
Will post more as it goes...
Well unfortunately the extrom didnt help so I bit the bullet and did a registry clean from the hard reset menu. It now boots and I have removed lots of apps to try to get rid of any clashes.. at the moment It appears to be completely normal until you try to run anything. mshome is working smoothly, the start menu is working, some settings panels will load, but I cant get it to run anything..
anyone seen this before?
Does anyone know if i can take a complete image of the device at this state and restore it later after i start really messing with things
Does anyone know if i can take a copy of the files on it and just restore the entire sms database after a hard reset?
I will think about how I can donate, its about time i did...
In the end a hard reset didnt work, so I reflashed and its all running smooth, lost some important documents, but it was all i could do.
lesson learned, remember to schedule back ups for everyday to sd
that's what i was talking about, pimbackup is great for that, you can find it here: http://www.dotfred.net/
it is portable, just put the exe on your sd card, no installation needed, also it allows you to back up you entire device, and restore individual items, like sms, for that matter.
if you want to make a full backup that would completely restore your device after a hard reset, with all settings, programs...
you should try SPB backup. there is a trial version at http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/backup/ that lasts for 14 days, that should be enough for your matters now. the only thing you need to know about spb backup is: you cannot restore a backup on another rom because it also saves the entire windows folder and that varies from rom to rom.
pimbackup, however can make universal backups that can be restored on other roms, other windows mobile versions from wm2003 to wm6.5.3, even other windows mobile based devices.

Phone problems!!!

Hi everybody,
I have got the LEO last week. I had several problems I could solve, but one big I could not solve yet.
It belongs to the Phone. After making a call, I am not able to make a second one. The application freezes, when I close it, I am not able to open the Phone again. Making a call from the history list is also sometimes something i can not do.
Can please somebody help me? Without the posibility to make easy and quickly calls the LEO is for me useless.
Thank You very much in advance!!!
i have the leo 4 7-8 months.never had problems.tried soft reset?if that wont help i believe that you must go 4 hard reset
maybe some program you put makes that.
If your LEO is giving so much problems within a week, you probably have a mondaymorning model.
Try to exchange it at the shop as it is not funtioning properly. (In EU this is consumer right)
If not possible,
What is it you have done to your phone allready?
You mention having problems and solved them, can you remember what you have done?
Has your phone ever funtioned without problems?
Try to do a complete factory reset or hard reset (look here)
Then format SD (first save data somewhere)
After reset/format does your phone function correctly?
Furthermore:
If you install apps/enhancements/skins, install all apps you need for your phone running on your device.
If you remove SD, your device should be able to startup without any problems, only applications you use besides the normal startup should reside on sd Card.
So for example:
Cookies home tab (becomes part of home screen)=> on device
Igo8 Navigator (Started manually after boot) => on sd card
Task manager (runs allways on background) => device
Games like experiment 13 => on sd card
[....]
if its brand new, get a new one, otherwise
backup
hard reset
if fixed, ok!
if not fixed,
try find an updated stock rom (if you want to stay stock) or get HSPL and flash a cooked rom.
If problem fixed, ok!
if not fixed, hardware problem.
Thank You for the replies. In the morning I tought the problem is fixed, but is not. Can be Cookies home tab a problem?

well it could be cookies but thousands of people use cookies so its unlikely.do you have loads of stuff installed?
also, are you restoring registry settings when you flash? because you shouldn't do that when you go to a new ROM. registry settings backup is only really for restoring to the same rom after hard reseting.
I tried to found an official ROM update for my device. I found one, but the only change is the launching date. On my device is one from 11.1.2010 and I have found one from 4.6.2010. Does it make sense to update?

Manual backup of certain data

Hi Everyone, as the title suggest this is about manually backing up your data from installed apps
Theres nothing complicated about it but it is a bit time consuming to start with, ive tried this on several programs, using the following process,
Back up the data,
Uninstalling the program,
Restart,
Install the program,
Running the program to confirm the previous data had gone,
Put the backup back in place,
Finally running the program again to confirm the old data was back.
first things first, you will need windows phone device manager
http://www.touchxperience.com/
now, use the file explorer and navigate to your "Applications\data folder
within here you will find everything you have installed listed as numbers and letters
the time consuming part is trying to work out what is what. The folder your looking for within each folder is called "IsolatedStore" that contains everything as far as i can see for that app
Simply transfer that folder to your PC,
To use it again, simply install the app, then copy the backup back overwriting whats there.
Cache and History dont seem to copy but ive not found an issue as yet with this
Ive not tried this after a full reset
Ive not looked for a way of doing this with SMS messages, i doubt it will be in the same location but its possible i suppose if you can find it
anyhow, I might just give NoDo a try now that i can "backup" my important data
was also thinking that perhaps this could be intigrated in to windows phone device manager, ive tried installing and removing an app several times and its always used the same folder name, i dont know if this is the case across devices, but if it is, potentially a database could be used... just a thought
OR!
just wait for the new version of windows phone device manager
which ive just been told will contain a back up utility!
i think it will hit beta users soon-ish
backing up sms etc seems to be a big obstacle to people using WP7 full time.
Hope this is included.

yeah that is a pain, ive been searching all damn night to see if i can find where they are but so far nothing, im guessing its within some protected area or within one of the DB files which cant be copied off.
wheres the pst files when you need them, MS have always managed to hide them in odd places
anyhow, perhaps im missing something, if not, then maybe sms backup will not be apart of his program because im buggered if i can find the things!.
SMS backup
Sorry to bump this thread but I thought I would add a link to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16490860&postcount=29 where you can backup SMS.
Just for completeness!

[Q] Processes use 90%+ of CPU

Hello all! I looked through the first 20 pages of threads, but no luck on finding my particular issue in any of them. I also attempted to use the search feature, but I keep getting a message stating that the service is unavailable. :/
My HD2 began acting up this past week with over heating/ battery drainage. Along with those symptoms I also get a lot of slowdown when trying to go through the UI or wake up the phone... At first I thought it was another Gmail update that was causing it, but after looking at the processes in the Task Manager I found that it was Manila.exe and VoiceCmd.exe that were eating up 90%+ of the CPU. I was wondering if anyone has any idea on what I can do about this situation. Can the files be replaced?
The phone was bought from T-Mobile about a year ago, and is running a stock rom that hasn't been updated to the most recent rom. I've tried a hard reset to try to fix my problem, but, alas, it still remains. The only thing that I have really done with this phone, tinkering-wise, is run a SuperFroyo Android SD card build. Would that be a possible cause of my problem?
Thank you for taking the time to read this. The following is what is currently installed on the phone, if more information is needed please let me know.
T-Mobile HD2
Manila: 2.5.20121412.2
Rom: 2.13.531.1 (90963) WWE
Radio: 2.10.50.26
Running a stock ROM for more than a year, that´s quite a long time...
Three things come into my mind as a possible hint:
1) Did you delete the "application data" folder before (or even after) making the hard reset? Sometimes, that data gets old... you can simply delete it, your system will recreate the files.
2) You added a new app, tweak or mod, even after the hard reset, which is incompatible. (Or, voice control is running wild?)
3) A hardware error...
might be worth a shot to start clean (do a hard reset again) and try this...boot up the device WITHOUT the sd card.
if that makes things better, check the sd card for errors. to be on the safe side, back up the data on the sd card and format it and restore your data and finally try the device WITH the sd card to see if that kills the issue!
Thanks guys, I tried what you suggested, unfortunately, my problem still remains. Would updating the stock rom to the new one that T-Mobile put out possibly solve anything? Would flashing an entirely different rom; Andoird Nand, Windows Phone 7 be a possible solution? I believe my 1 year warranty with T-Mobile is up, so going flash crazy doesn't seem like a bad idea.
Update: I ended up doing the rom update through T-Mobile, and I have yet to have any issues with CPU spikes since I did it yesterday. I'm currently running HyperDroid CM7 in conjunction with PortaDroid to run it from the SD card instead of Nand. It's working flawlessly so far, before it was crashing/ freezing left and right.
