Photos Disappearing!!!! - Nexus S General

UGH my photos that I take with the camera are disappearing! I'm not sure how to replicate it but it might be either when I mount the usb or restart the phone.
Is this a known issue? Is anyone else having this problem? This almost renders the camera useless

also, this isn't just a gallery issue because when I check the DCIM folder with Astro file manager the photos are still missing

I had this problem too. Lost all my family videos and some pics, its very anoying bug... there is thread on google android somewhere, I posted here somewhere in this forum and the same content there. I think that maybe some instalation, but is just my opinion, embased in nothing.

I had several pictures I took disappear a few weeks ago. This was (obviously) while still on 2.3.2. No idea what the cause was, but I agree, they're not anywhere on the sdcard to be found. Very scary.
To be fair, I don't recall which of the three camera apps I use (stock, camera360, vignette) I took them with. I think it was vignette (and yes, I checked its folder). Are you using the stock camera or a 3rd party one?
For the time being, important pictures are being immediately uploaded/shared to my Picasa account.

done that, thx

In my case, my missing pics always reappear after rebooting. Funny thing is my previously deleted pics magically reappear in my Gallery (in a pixelated fashion) whenever my new pics go missing.

thank you for link. hope it gets fixed soon

A side effect of Froyo?

This is all new to me. I'm the one that started the thread about a noob's adventures in rooting and with the help of a few people here (mostly mtag1029 who hung in there with me almost the entire day) I finally got Froyo. Well last night I began reinstalling some apps and I posted some thoughts in my other thread including something I ran into that was WELL BEYOND me.
It happened just now and I whipped out my camera to take a pic. It happened this time when I tried to open Astro. As you can see from the pic, it clearly didn't open into Astro, but what it did open to I have no idea. I just thought I'd post it for viewing by people far smarter in this field than I am.
EDIT: I'd like to add that at first the keyboard was visible but in the time it took me to grab the camera it disappeared.

It is a file editor. I don't know exactly what file, but just go to home screen.

I just hit the back button to get out of it, but I just didn't know why it happened twice since Froyo. It's certainly not normal.

Probably a problem with astro

Since you are rooted, get shootme and you can take great screen captures using the device without needing an external camera.
I thought it might be with Astro but as mentioned it first came up with a keyboard which is not something that's associated with using Astro.
As for ShootMe, I have it and tried to use it earlier today when it first happened but the minute I press the menu key or back, it goes away. When it happened the second time I figured is just grab a camera.
ShootMe is really cool BTW. I saw it mentioned in another thread and went and DL'd it today.

It isn't particularly an astrology problem, but astrology probably launched it, since thats the only way I know of to get into file editor.

Such crappy apps.

I've been trying to find the perfect app for photos (particularly for my Flickr photostream) and what an abysmal lot of apps they are. The only one that seems like it might be good is FlickFolio but you have to pay to find out if it is. There is no free trial version or light version. I've tried nearly all of the free alternatives including Flickr's ofiicial app and that is terrible (Stuck in portrait mode on the tablet until you open a photo fullscreen and then it suddenly allows landscape mode. Exit fullscreen and it is stuck in portrait mode again). JustPics HD is sorta OK but has an issue where it makes the screen go full brightness when you show a photo fullscreen. Also it only shows sets instead of the photostream.
Don't even get me started on the inbuilt photo viewer. Complete garbage (why do I want to see every image stored in my books folder! Sheesh!).
This seems to be the way with a lot of apps on Android though. They seem to cater for either phone users or tablet users and rarely both. I don't have experience of Apple stuff but I am guessing things are a little more together over in the Apple apps camp.
EDIT: Sorry just having a bit of a moan.
Give Quick Pic a try. It's free and works nicely as a photo gallery for viewing local content on all my Android devices...you can choose which folders to include or exclude and the image rendering is very fast.
Id get flickfolio, really good app has all your stream and sets and so forth.
It stores it a set amount locally also so you can view while offline.
I've sworn by quickpic for a very long time but since the last few updates my albums sometimes take up to 90 seconds to load.

Try clearing it's cache.
I've done so. its a problem after cache clearking and reinstalls over multiple ROMs.
JustPictures works great for online albums as well as local stuff.
Flickr Viewer HD.
So far seems awesome, pics look great and a very cool layout. Still needs some interface work but my favorite Flickr App

I've been using it since my RAM-challenged Archos tablet and it's always outperformed any stock photo app our anything else I've tried from the market.

Pretty sure there's a 15 minute window during which you can any app out and refund it if you don't like it.

Reboot while in camera

When taking pictures in low light situations with flash (it seems low battery enhances the probability) sometimes the pictures get artifacts (white lines close to the top/bottom of the picture).
And sometimes the phone gets stuck and reboots. The camera tends to make clicking noises right before it reboots that are louder than when usually focusing.
Look at the screenshot and at the end you can see the reboot. You can see a sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
I don't know if this is hardware or software related but a user suggested this to be a problem with the stock camera app.
I had this problem on two devices already and it seems to be on all devices, maybe just rarer for some people? Not sure.
If you have this problem vote for the following issue and hope google fixes it:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=49702&#makechanges
I had something similar happen to me once last week. I was viewing my photos in the stratosphere mode and would hit the back button. I had to repeatedly do this to scroll to the next images after viewing them. When hitting the back button it would take me back to take a picture, but one time, it took me to a blank screen with the camera buttons still working. I ended up needing to restart my phone. Not sure what happened there.
I have only seen this once. It didn't occur again, so I haven't chased it down
Ditto only happened once in the first week of using and has never happened again

Kinda sucks when it happens randomly, today it happened twice to me and that in 4.2.2!

I also have it, but less frequent, about one or two times per month. It happened on 4.2.1 and no one could solve it in my thread about this .
Facing the same issue more frequently

The device was a little hot but not as hot as when in gaming and in gaming it never reboots.
Look at the screen shot and at the end you can see the reboot. What I'm worried about is the sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
Are these reboots hardware or software related? Should I get a replacement?

I seem to have the same issue. So far, it has only occurred when I am trying to take a photo with the flash on. One more observation: seems to happen more often if the battery is low. However, both of us might be having defective devices, as it doesn't seem to be a common issue looking the forums here.
No solution found so far. Tried a factory reset. Tried using another camera app. Nothing helped. Might try flashing a custom ROM.

All oft the things you described apply to my situation too. Also I noticed that pictures tend to have artifacts (white stripes close to the top/bottom). They always have the same distance from top/bottom but their length differs.
Also after the forced reboot there sometimes appears an extra picture in the gallery that is fully grey.

I don't seem to have the artifact problem that you described. Also there is a creaking sound sometimes just before it restarts.
Have you tried flashing a custom ROM? Did it help? Otherwise RMA is possibly the way to go.
I ordered the phone from US using a mail forwarding service, so an rma will cost me another $100 or so. If you or anyone else can confirm that it is definitely a hardware issue which can be resolved by getting a replacement, i might go for it.

I was on AOKP PUB Krait 05/02 by Stevespear and Harsh Kernel and I did have a reboot there once too. Also this is already my third Nexus 4 since I had to replace it 2 times due to issues (bottom side creaking 1st device / yellow blotches 2nd device) and this one really looks good only this camera reboot issue is left.
But my first phone did have the issue too, I didn't have the 2nd phone long enough so didn't see it happen there. I have no idea if it is a hardware or software issue but my bet is that all Nexus 4's have that issue.
It just seems that it appears rather rarely and most people don't notice it. Or it could be that the voltage is too low and that would explain why it happens on some phones more than on others since not all chips are equal. I was wondering if somehow setting the flash to be weaker so it draws less power would solve this. But I am just a user and don't really have an idea.
PS: I won't get my phone replaced since I can live with this issue (it happens rather rarely) and I went through 2 replacements to get this device which is close to perfect but I wouldn't mind if someone came up with a solution.
That makes me feel really lucky to have gotten a nearly perfect device. Anyway, guess we just have to live with it then. Lowering the flash intensity sounds like a good idea. Will check if some rom/kernel/app can do it for me.

Having the same problem here on 4.2.1 and 4.2.2. I think it might be the buggy stock camera/gallery app because I can't replicate the problem on the Camera Zoom FX app.
Edit: I remember having this problem on 4.2.1 and then clearing the gallery app data and not ever seeing the issue happen again. I will try the same on 4.2.2 and see if it fixes it too.
I added a link to the issue on OP guess that is all I can do.

I have had this issue with the Camera FX Zoom app also. So, at least in my case, I guess it's a hardware/camera driver issue. Anyway, I also cleared the gallery app data a few days back and haven't faced this issue since then, but haven't taken enough pics with flash to confirm that the issue is truly gone.

Has the issue disappeared after clearing the app data for you? I certainly have not faced any reboots since doing it.

Heyo, same here.
Installed 2.1.2 and my google camera still dies after 2-3 Panorama pics (not yet stitched together pics) and yes, I tried reinstalling google camera...
After 3+ pics, it acts as if it takes the 4th pic, but actually freezes and the whole shot is for naught.
Frustration on: damn, sooooo many problems with this phone. Camrea, heat, crashes, no vpn, etc. and most of all, no ROM community to try other roms as a solution. No Cyanogenmod. Frustration off.

Photos are taken but dissapear?

My girlfriend and I both purchased S7 edges 2-3 months ago. We recently took a trip to the beach and after taking pictures of the kids pretty much all day we realized that we both didn't have the majority of the pictures that we took. Even a few that we uploaded to Facebook immediately after taking, even though they uploaded to Facebook they still weren't on our phones. The rest of the vacation we didn't have the issue but last night and today I took pictures and a few are missing. Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a fix out there for it?
How much free storage do you have?
Gigs! Storage space isnt the issue at all. After I realized I didnt have the last pic I snapped a few more pics just to test it out and all of those pics took and saved.
EDITED: 11 gigs avail on device , 5 gig avail on SD card

I have rebooted between instances, and keep in mind we are talking about 2 phones, and even crazier both phones did it at the same time at the same adventure park. Id say we each lost at least 10 pics that we took at the same park... But did have a few? It seems so crazy and weird...
That is weird.
Did you guys accidentally use a different modes or push animate on them? Are you 2 using sd cards?

I recommend saving the internal storage then transferring them to sd later. Good luck.
Apparently this is an S7 Edge thing? I never had issues like this on my note 3 and she didnt on her S5 either
You could try the diskdigger app on the play store. Don't know if it will help but it's worth a try.

Possibly an issue with the app you're using to look at your pictures. I like using ES File Explorer to dig around the files on my phone. Just navigate to where you keep the pictures stored and maybe you'll see all of them.
Mine just started doing this too. I would see the photo in the preview, try to open that to share it and it wouldn't be there. So frustrating.

Also just found out my dads Note 5 is doing the same to him every now and then.
I had this happen to me yesterday. My little cousin was posing with my dog sleeping on his lap so I snapped the pic. When I went to upload it, it was gone. Lost a cute moment. First instance I've seen, but I don't take pictures often. I'm not using an sd card, either
I thought my phone was doing this. I installed quick pic and was able to see them again. And I can now see them in my systems gallery app where I couldn't before. Worth a shot.
