News from Samsung on Froyo

Samsung UK We know you are all eagerly awaiting the Froyo updates, and we appreciate your patience. The network testing of the Galaxy S Froyo upgrade is proceeding according to the schedule we released last week (we expect all UK customers to receive their upgrade by the end of November). We can confirm that the software we’re working on includes a solution to the Froyo Android Market issue which has been widely discussed.

Really not liking that 'end of Nov' part.

Just read this too, good news if they can keep to their word. Makes sense that they pulled it after the initial release to sort out the market issue, doesn't say about any other problems people have experienced but I guess they just want to get this out now and then tweak it more if necessary later.
We know the final build is done as they have released the japanese version with 2.2, so it must be about upgrading thats causing the problem. Just like people on here have said once they did a clean install it works pretty well, so they must want to make sure its ok when moving from eclair to froyo

The nicest thing is, that market problem is not even related to the phone itself. My mate, who has a desire has the exact same problem with the market "download unsuccessful" problem....if this is what they are talking about...

I think it is the problem where the Market does not show up in app drawer or on screen after update.

They replied to the fb thread with
'Samsung UK Hi Davinder and Darren. We're releasing Froyo from the beginning of November and we're expecting all networks to have it by the end of November.'

November 8 samsung is releasing a 2.3 device and they will take till november end to release a froyo update wtf is wrong with samsung......
None of this makes sense! Does it?

Do they mean the unlocked galaxy s or the carrier galaxy s, unlocked was meant to be out at beginning of November and the carrier version was meant to be out at the end of November and the post states the update is on time?

Gizmodo is not Samsung's, nothing in that news makes it official. I can probably blog somewhere that I've got anonymus tips that HoneyComb is released on Jan 1st 2011 on SGS, doesn't makes it official neither...

Well then the roumor dosent make any sense as samsung hasint even able to let out a stable version of 2.2 yet...2.3 is gona b a long way..
GOOGLE should come up with a centralised updating program for all the android runing devices )

You have to make a difference between rumors that looks like news and real official statements :|

It's going to be released on Nov 8th? I through it was just being announced on that date?

Samsung are being totaly retarded about this update. This is what happens when you go from making tv's to making smartphones. I wonder if they will makes wait another year and update dirctly to gingerbread :/

and then if you don't want to wait and upgrade by a different method first check the thread that's stickied about internal SD issues on i9000M
then if you still want to upgrade search out the Kies Patcher program or one of the many other threads that describes how to upgrade. You've got to spend some time learning or you could easily end up with a brick.

A post on Samsung Mobile Romania's Facebook page seems to suggest that Romanian Galaxy S phones (and presumably other European models) may see an official update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread by the end of March.
Translated into English and cleaned up a little, the post reads:
"The update to version 2.2.1 for Galaxy S will be available until 20 March, and Gingerbread (2.3) until the end of the month."
Our Romanian is a little rusty, but we think it's safe to assume the last part of that statement means either "it'll arrive by the end of the month", or "it won't arrive until the end of the month". Either way, it looks like the European Galaxy S could soon claim bragging rights as the first non-Nexus phone to get an official Gingerbread update. HTC has announced that Gingerbread will be coming to some of its older phones, but these updates aren't due until sometime in the second quarter.
Samsung Romania also adds that two of its budget phones, the i5500 Galaxy 5 and i5800 Galaxy 3, will be updated to Froyo by Mar. 20 and Mar. 31 respectively. [Samsung Romania Facebook via Crave]

The universal kernel is for 2.2 and 2.2.1 ROMs only.

Also, it's not a universal kernel, it's a universal settings.apk that's been fixed for us.

That's great and all - really it is. But didn't the first Froyo releases already come out in Europe by September? Yet the Vibrant didn't get Froyo for another 4 months...

so what this means is... a year till we get gingerbread?

I don't really know the history of the Vibrant, (Picked it up off Craigslist 2 months ago) but this at least gives me some hope.

God, getting Gingerbread on the Vibrant would be AMAZING. It would increase the speed, and once the source is released, we would see some awesome gingerbread ROM's for it.

Just one gingerbread leak for vibrant, then we will be back in business.

Seriously. All they need is the driver sources + the kernel and CM7 would become amazing.

Hopefully somebody will be able to port it quickly if T-Mobile foes not roll out the rom in the same timeframe...

Tmobile said they would be more up to speed on updates. Take that for what you want it to mean.

+1. This was released by T-mo after 2.2 was released on kies for the vibrant. So hopefully we'll get gingerbread alot faster than froyo. And hopefully the first of the U.S galaxy S phones to be updated again.

If the Vibrant gets an official Gingerbread update EVER I will buy a Galaxy Tab immediately.

UPDATE: Samsung Finland will release the Android 2.3 update in mid-April.
Swedish Samsung subsidiary has confirmed that the much awaited Android 2.3 update for Galaxy S is expected soon. The Gingerbread firmware is in final stages of testing and unlocked Galaxy S users can expect the update sometime in mid-April.
For Galaxy S locked to operators, the update is expected in mid-May.
Samsung will release the update via Kies.

I think that the 2.3.3 that's being leaked is great. with some modifications, it is the best ROM i have had already. we can enjoy gingerbread till it will be official.

Same press release quoted earlier is now on Samsung's Nordic branches' sites. Here is a link for the Finnish site translated through Google Translate. (The translation is what it is. Makes the point, though.)

FYI, it's on Norway's site also. This implies that Nordic users will be first to get GB - like with JS8 - but we know that Samsung procrastinates with firmware releases. We just sit back and wait.

I just sent an email the german samsung support about 2.3 - let's see if I get an answer and if so, what they say about a release

Great so Bell should be coming out with their 2.3 in about July or August then. I wonder WTF they are doing with these things in there.

Okay, the german support just replied - no specific date given, quote: "Yet, we don't have any specific information about the release date of Android 2.3". Or in german: "Wir haben noch keine genaueren Informationen über den Erscheinungstermin von Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)."

Update from german o2 online forum:
the version, which was tested and approved by o2 (Germany ?), ist this one: I9000XWJV7_XXJVK_VIAJV1

I'm running custom JVP (2.3.4) roms so kies won't show anything for me anyway as JVO is latest UK (2.3.3). It'll be in readiness for 2.3.4 official, so if you're running stock JVO worth checking

my basis is that two 2.3.4 variants have already leaked.
Then a kies update this week (which often precedes a firmware update)
Your cynicism is not shared...the galaxy s has enjoyed numerous updates since I purchased mine last year on Eclair 2.1.
I don't have a crystal ball .... its called an informed guess

For my understanding the major 2.3.3 updates are all release out !?
So what should Samsung do? They can only wait until the local mobile provider provides them with their version of 2.3.3. E.g. in Germany the official Vodafone firmware comes always week to months after the Samsung releases. But this depends on Vodafone!
Make pressure on your local mobile provider!

I've received the new Kies update, but Kies still states that last firmware for my phone (France Unbranded / GT-I9000HKDXEF) is Froyo 2.2.1. Official Gingerbread is due for the next 15 days, as since April.
So I think that's all this discussion is pure speculation.
For all we know, it's also possible that IceCream will be out before official Samsung 2.3.4...

I am running 2.3.3 upgraded from Kies. I recently received the kies update and at that point it stated that I had the latest firmware for my phone (France Unbranded GT-I9000). Although, today it has nothing where it usually says up to date. Don't know what that means, found it interesting. Also, I thought that there was a rush to push 2.3.4 out to fix the wifi security issue. It was/is very easy for someone to grab passwords off a phone. Google: Android WiFi security loophole

Never mind, Kies looks normal today. Firmware is up to date
