Just got my hands on my DHD today, since I came from iphone 4, I can't help but compare it heavily.
First few hours of use, I find myself doing a lot of "accidental tap" easily, like when I swipe the screen for scrolling, I pretty much always will end up clicking on something by accident. Is there anyway you can tone down that sensitivity? This problem doesn't really happy when I am using iphone
And the scrolling menu feels a little sluggish/laggy compare to iphone 4 as well. Will this improve if I install a good Custom Rom?
Just wondering anyone out there feels the same?
I've had an iPhone 4 since release day (it was my first iPhone) and also got a DHD today, mainly to scratch the itch that has always been there and so I can decide which one to keep/sell.
I haven't noticed the touch being too sensitive, however you're right about it not feeling as 'smooth' overall as iOS, and I think it's because Android does not yet benefit from GPU acceleration whereas iOS and WP7 do. I believe it is set to get GPU acceleration in the future.
thanks for your reply.
I think I will test the phone until the battery runs out and see how long it lasts.
In the meantime, I will decide which customROM to go for until it does.
Don't let the first charge/discharge put you off the battery life, it is possible to 'train' your battery by calibrating it, making it last as long as possible.
Thanks I will.keep that in mind

As for the scrolling, you may want to try some launchers other than Sense on the market. I use LauncherPro, and I rarely feel the lag. However, there's still some differences in smoothness when compared to the iphone4.
Yep launcher pro seems to be gpu accelerated so yeah its very smooth scrolling around the app menu and on home screens. I switched from sense to launcher pro about 2 week ago and I can't believe I stayed on sense, though I was more than happy on sense lpp is just too awesome.
I also have a screen protector so I've lost some sensitivity anyways.

Another thing is to switch on USB Debugging for general use (Settings > Applications > Development). I had a rather noticable lag until I did this, and now it is non-existent.
Of course, running Android Revolution 2.0.13 at 1.23 Ghz might also have something to do with my increased performance... ;-)

You're confusing CPU and G(Graphics)PU - there's no GPU acceleration yet in Android.

Oss bergensere kan det, vettu.
It's on the Evo, Inc and DHD. The DHD build is a bit faster than the others, but only marginally. Running launcher pro or adw makes it all extremely smooth though you lose the top bar and have to skin the launcher to be invisible. The lower bar works, as well as the buttons.
Now, if only I knew someone who could get gpu acceleration and phone working...
PS: Keyboard writes invisible text until you minimize the keyboard.

Wow, that's pretty sweet. With GPU acceleration and some basic phone functions this would kick ass.
"Tablet only" huh Google
Looks pretty awesome.. but things seem a little too cramped and tiny.
Wow.. if this is going to work it would be amazing.
Only the basic function are good enough!
Internet - Call - Text - Email - GPU acceleration.
Our Desire HD or mini tablets they will run Honeycomb
I have no idea how to fix any of that so someone else would have to go about developing for this.
It is highly possible that, by fixing the GPU drivers, the UI will be much smoother!
Great work man!
Oh boy, can't wait to try out a solid release of this.
Great work and keep it up.

I got this phone yesterday and I must say it looks gorgeous. I set It up adding my emails, widgets etc and then experienced a lot of lag while scrolling on the social hub widget, even the Internet browser takes ages to load and struggles while scrolling.
I'm really unhappy now as my gs2 didn't face such an issue and i was expecting this to be smoother considering it has a faster processor.
I don't want to root this phone for security reasons.
Is anyone experiencing this issue and is there a solution?
Any info would be helpful.
Thank you.

What widgets are you using?
I have about 15 icons, weather widget and digital clock wiget on one screen and nothing on any of the other screens.
Hmmm that might be the problem. I'm using widgets on every screen. I've gone a bit widget bonkers! Having said that I had the same widgets on the Galaxy S2 and didn't suffer lag issues.
I have rooted and am waiting for some decent ROMS to appear, I'm sure that will fix???

Hi
Hi friends.
I also notice lag and Im using the stock launcher and with almost no widgets.
Apart from the screen issues that one will notice if he uses the devise for reading.
I had the SGS2 before and the difference is noticable.
Such a pitty for such a promising devise.
I changed screen density and only use one screen with go launcher set to have 7x7 grid size. I have 2 widgets, Weather and BBC News, I use upward swipe to open app drawer and not noticed lag at all when in use but I do get around a 1/2 to 1 second delay when pressing power or home to wake the device. Not the end of the world but would be cool if it was instant like the S2.

It's the same on my Samsung Galaxy S2 and it's never changed so I wouldn't worry about it.
There were some threads on the SGS2 forum about ideas on how to fix it if I remember rightly.
I love my note but i would have to agree that SG2 is faster compare to note . ( that make ppl feel like the note is laggy as they have used SG2 before )
؟؟؟
thank God the device is super fast....there is no lag at all.....just hard-reset the device and enjoy it
Launcher Pro is much smoother on my Note than ADW...
ADW EX is lightning fast with density hack at 240, all the others lagged.
Obviously mine is rooted. Also using Roboto font.
I have lag
I am comparing when zooming out all the home screens and then selecting one. The animation is faster and smoother on a HTC 4G. ALSO, sometimes when waking the phone the screen will flash the unlocked screen for a second before the lock screen appears ie see your messages app then you see the lockscreen and have to unlock the phone. I just reset the phone thinking this would help but it didn't. Coming from the iphone I am sad that everything isn't backs up like the iphone without rooting. This lag is more picky than a problem. I don't understated lag when the phone is so powerful.

Yeah I agree, I don't understand the lag with such a powerful device. I suppose it is possible that Samsung has used cheaper, slower dram in this phone. Even the Plus animation when the phone boots micro-stutters. Of well, hopefully in a month we can get our hands on the Nexus.

That's the nature of Android, because so many manufacturers can use it, developers need to program apps for all of them in mind and seeing they all have the potential to utilise different hardware you can't expect a developer to be able to foresee these things.
What we need to do is just put a request to the developers and ask if they can make it compatible with the Notes graphics card/drivers making it lag free.
This is exactly why virtually all native Samsung apps run fantastic, because their devs know the hardware and drivers hence know how to get full potential.
What would fix this is every time Google releases a version like ICS they should state exactly which hardware will be ALLOWED to run on this platform. But then you lose the openness.
It's a double edged sword, you have to take the good with the bad..
This is unfortunately where apple shines with the iphone because they make the OS and the device. If they just loosened up on their OS a little then we wouldn't be talking here

The Note will ONLY get better with each update/support from either Samsung or our beloved developers.. And that's a one way direction.. O)nly better..
Guys the reason for the lag is the constant downclocking of the cpu to 800 or 500mhz as well as unnecessary services apps running in the background. I believe it can be optimised..

Not really, mines rooted and have uninstalled all uneeded apps. Although adw doesn't lag anymore, other apps do like Facebook and even ES file explorer.
There is a dedicated gpu which isnt utilised for most of the apps which lag, this is the problem at hand.
The iphones been running a sub 1ghz cpu and less than 1gb of ram for long before android adopted them, but doesnt share the same issues.
But as stated it can only get better from here.

Agreed in some respects...
Have you installed AnTuTu CPU master?
I have noticed that when the CPU is operating at 800mhz everything lags.
When I force the CPU to 1400mhz using AnTuTu the lag is present for the first homescreen swipe in ADW EX (DPI 260) then it's smooth as butter.
I have also observed this behaviour in launcher pro.
A guy on here recommended using BetterBatteryStats to possibly locate the apps/background services that are unnecessary hogging the CPU.
Fully agreed on the Iphone performance - but that is clearly due to software strictly tailored for hardware.
Android requires brute force due to software required to work on multiple devices
Gotta say tho my Galaxy Tab 7 (First Gen) with overcome is way faster in general operation than the Note... Until I force the processor to stay at 1400mhz - then it just flies.
Clearly the Note has a lot of potential.

While this doesn't actually improve the UI acceleration, it does however enable HW decoding for video playback, very useful if you stream HD quality MKVs over MHL.

Some custom roms already have this tweak enabled by default.
But for actual GPU acceleration on Gingerbread(2.3.5) it is limited to only stock video player and 3d applications. Currently the UI it is handled by the CPU alone (ICS will introduce UI GPU acceleration as a standard).
Maybe stock google launcher has no gpu acceleration. Im not really sure about that.
For sure Go launcher (the one im using) has HW acceleration. All those 3D transitions running very smooth (maybe @ 60fps).
Im pretty sure that touchwiz launcher has aswell.

Go Launcher is a massive pile of crap. It makes the cpu ramp up to the maximum clock speed available all the time: this makes it feel smooth and responsive at the price of draining the battery like there was no tomorrow. LPP is the only smooth, reliable but still battery friendly launcher on the market, and it's a shame that the developer isn't pushing updates anymore...

Well, underclock your pc and try to play the games you was playing before. Performance will drop.
Raw power of cpu will never be able to draw smooth graphics. Obviously, all these animations that Go launcher is using are written with openGl es. Opengl = gpu.
Allthough, maybe im totaly wrong. A developer could give us a reliable answer

Guys, when you play around with Galaxy SII's screen performance by installing many kinds of home launchers and try it all and doing the same on Note, you will notice that Note has a lot of bugged in screen performance especially on the speed scrolling while SII is very smooth. This is because our Note's screen resolution is bigger than SII. Have you guys noticed the same?

I think so too. My mum has a GSII and I have the Note. I feel that hers is a little quicker as well...
Yes and I always jealous my wife' s2 too. Maybe upcoming ICS update for us should be more smoother than our stock gb.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Pretty much as you said, the screen resolution is the cause of it being "slower", more pixels=more power needed. Probably why they made it 1.4Ghz. Try using Franco's kernel and your Note will be as smooth as can be. ICS is super smooth well all the AOSP based ones of course. The leaked one was okay, not quite polished yet. Ik benchmarks aren't everything, but with Francos I usually got around 4800-5200.

Thank for your comment. This is really one of the good finding. From my first day usage of note and s2, I already noticed on the screen performance as I bought it on same day.
I really do not bother to play around with flashing or rooting as Im concerned my note could be bricked and that is the reason why I'm have been with stock gb over 2 months. But feeling sometime want to hack it too due to slow screen performance.

yeah
Funny I was thinking that my skyrocket was faster too. Kinda miss my skyrocket lol
I tried ADW Launcher and scrolling in the app drawer was really laggy.
On ADW EX however, it's smooth as butter.
I can't see the difference on my Note or a SGS2.
Also, I can't see any difference between both TouchWiz launchers in terms of smoothness.
Some games most definitely do lag. Where they don't on the SGS2.
Note: 1280x800=1.024.000
SGS2: 800x480=384.000
So the Note has 2.6666 times more pixels, but the gpu is the same ARM Mali400 in both devices.

You can try by:
Installing Go launcher on both devices, adding 6 home pages, putting the screen fully of go widgets like:
face book widget
twitter widget
email widget
Calendar widget
message widget and make sure you resize it to full screen for each widget in the home screen page. Also put some Samsung widgets like photo frame widget, App widget, news widgets and scrolling screen the same on both devices then tell me what u notice.
For TW on note & s2, I can say screen performance on note almost the same which is 93% of s2.
Do also try adw launcher on both devices and just scroll the screen and u will see the different too.

Ill give a few reason as to why I feel the screen performance is slower on the note as compared to the SGSII.
First, I think its because the note wasnt really as fine tuned as the sgs2 for perfect performance. I mean the hardware was really made for the sgs2 and they had a pretty good time to optimize it to perfection. Some original SGSII users will admit that when it was released it wasnt as smooth as some of the newer builds, meaning months after release it was performing crazy good. Same with note, the newest rom, lc1 is actually smooth as butter. I can only imagine it will get better with a fully optimized ICS rom.
Second, as others mentioned, the screen res, but i think with ics it will be no problem.
Third, this maybe just me, but i think because of how big the screen on the note is maybe thats why it seems slower. I mean on iphone or smaller screens ots harder to notice lag. On tablets its very easy to notice lag.

Oh yeah, what about comparing the iPad 2/3 and the iPhone 4S? I don't see any type of lag or time difference when using all 3. Sure the animation might take a micro second longer, but that is definitely not lag. HC on the other hand does lag, a lot, but when using ICS, I do see a noticeable speed bump.

I had a SG2 before the Note and it was zippier. But the bigger screen makes up for that.
Note - 3x higher resolution than S2. More processing power needed. Comparison is pointless. Either get this or S2. Move on and wait for ICS.

has zero lag. the Note does lag more. Its a pretty large screen though. I use the Cube animation with GoLauncher with 20 widgets and yeah that lags LOL
Lists don't lag at all. Only some heavy graphics. ICS will hopefully smooth things out a bit. but the screen size is worth the lag now and then.

I found the complete opposite. Stock for stock I think yes my Skyrocket was slightly faster doing something like flipping screens, but at most other things the Note feels faster to me. Especially the App Drawer, I always felt the app drawer load was sluggish on the skyrocket, regardless of Rom/Launcher used. With AOSP ICS on the Note the App Drawer is super smooth.
