I live in southern africa where its still going to be some time before the G1 is launched.
It would be possible for me to order the US G1 from ebay but I am concerned about the network band because firstly I want to know that the phone will at least work on the regular 2G network (1800 in my country) for the usual phone calls and then of course I want to be able use 3G for Internet access. I don't know the 3G frequency in my country but the service has been available for over a year already.
Is it a software restriction which can be resolved by updating the firmware at a later stage or is there actually different hardware for the model being released in the US and those being released in other countries like the UK?

Take a look here to find the UMTS frequency that your carrier uses (of course, call to double check):

It hasn't exactly been confirmed yet, but the G1 is supposed to support both 1700+2100 (UMTS IV) and 2100 (UMTS I) networks. Since African carriers are all using 2100, you should have no problems getting a 3G signal without having to worry about hardware/software compatability. You should also confirm that your carrier will provide the approrpiate connection settings in case you need to set it up manually.
The G1 also comes with quad-band GSM/EDGE, so you will certainly be able to receive 2G signals.
However, keep in mind that the first batch of G1s will be locked to T-mobile. You will need to make sure that you get a carrier-unlocked device in order to use your carrier's SIM.

Thanks, that makes me feel more comfortable with ordering a G1 from the US.
I was just concerned because I read somewhere that the US version does not work in AUS so there obviously are problems in some countries with the bands. The UK version will apparently work in Aus.
Again, I want to emphasize that you need to make sure you have an unlocked version. When you first turn on the phone, you are required to log into gmail (or create a new account) over a 2G/3G network. If you are unable to login (because the phone has not been unlocked to work on your carrier's 2G/3G), you will not be able to use the G1 for anything other than emergency calls. You won't even be able to enable WiFi to handle the login.

If at all possible, I would advise waiting at least until some other folks have tried bringing the G1 to other networks so that you know what exactly you will have to do to get one working on your carrier.

TRY the secret code of *#*#2263#*#* ? This will work on tmobile’s samsung vibrant. This will allow you to check mark the 850mhz and 1900 mhz frequency for att 3g network. If you are on tmobile it will need 1700 AWS and 2100 MHZ for tmobile 3g. I would check all the frequencies so you won’t have to worry about this anymore. Let me know if that works for you. Thanks

Sorry, even though the menu choices are there, the hardware isn't. The vibrant does have the ability to use all the frequencies, but not the tab. I think samsung used one menu for every tab model.
Anyway the code is *#2263#. Keep trying -- we need a solution!

Flash any rom besides a stock rom and you will have the phone dialer.
Heres what I don't get.. Why can't I select the 1700mhz band. When I do it selects the 900mhz band.
I am using Simple Mobile, so theres no way for Tmobile to block the IMEI number....
If I use a stock rom, it works 3g no problems.
The radio band is a limitation of the firmware on the device - the TMO devices are configured to only use the 1700/2100 AWS combination, while the AT&T variant is configured to use 850 or 1900. (Both also appear to work on the 2100 Euro frequency).
To change the available radio bands it appears that not only must we change the Android firmware & modem, but also we need to change the firmware for the RF amplifier chip which is sold by Infineon as being universal.
So far, nobody has figured out how to do this.
Hence we have the 2G limitation on the TMO tabs, and no way of switching between AT&T and TMO frequencies on the same tab.
The IMEI issue is a red herring that is only relevant if you are trying to use a regular TMO phone SIM from a normal TMO phone account in a Tab. They will not let you use a SIM from a standard phone account in your TAB because they want you to pay twice for the data - once for your phone, and again for the Tab. You can't simply drop your phone SIM into your tab whenever you want 3G data on your Tab. This is what they block by checking the IMEI number against your account type.

Samsung uses the same service menu for all models of the tab, so all possible frequencies are on the menu. If there were no differences between carrier models we would ask have the same model number. Different models, carriers, hardware.

I get that.. I come from the land of the HTC Leo. For a long time all we had was edge service, the RMNET 3g, then PPP 3g, then clockwork and finally true RMNET 3g. However, my thoughts are.. If the stock ROM comes with 3g service enabled, there has to be a way to suck out the guts that make it work. Also within our "phone" enabled roms there also has to be a way to split the data within the rom. Sorry if it makes sense to me but look at it like this.. Roto has a modem switcher, why couldn't we just code the rom while cooking to use one modem for data and the other for calls?
Just remember that no matter what device you are using, when on a phone call - Data does not work.
Please shed some light on the details I am missing..

Wait a minute... Did you flash a Euro ROM over a US TMO Tab?
if so, you should be able to use the Roto Modem switcher that will allow you to use the TMO U S modem if you need 3G, or switch to the Euro modem to do calls and EDGE...
otherwise, something here does not ad up...

Roto actually tried to hack together the data code from the stock TMO 3G modem with the voice bits from the Euro one, but was not able to get it to work. Others have tried to flash modems from the Samsung Vibrant (which is in theory the same device in phone clothes), but the Vibrant modems will not play nice with the Tab and will not support 3G even with the US firmware...
There is something under the hood that we are not able to access that is blocking full phone capability on the TMO tab.

I agree with your approach. The modem.bin files we use with the modem switch both do what we want, but are excluding some hardware options.
My idea would be for someone to open the two binary files side-by-side to compare and find the line that turns on/off the voice in the 2g and 3g modems.
To that end we have a bounty thread in the general section, to attract the talent and skill we need. Why not go make a pledge? The higher the sooner!

according to roto, simple mobile uses tmobile infrastructure, so the speculation is that tmobile is still effectively blocking the imei.
Ok guys I don't want to take credit for any of this, the credits for this discovery goes to a captivate user in USA named shoman94. Here's his post.
I'm just reporting it here so a lot of canadian galaxy s users (I9000m) will save some search. The method to enable this frequencies is pretty simple but you need to have the recovery 2e version not the 3e that comes on UGJL2 firmware version from Bell. So if you still on stock firmware and want to play arround with modem version to see if you can find a better HSPA+ connection or a better GPS, I recommend you flash the last Speedmod Kernel via odin so you have clockworkmod recovery and the ability to apply update trought zip file not signed.
The method goes like this and it is good for I9000M / I9000T. (Might not work for I9000B as there is a tv tuner antenna so the modem firmware must be different and will not work for I9000 due to hardware limitation)
You need to have a modem that comes with 850 mhz enable (UGJL2, TLJL3, UGJK3, UGJK4, UGKC1). So if it's not your case just flash one of these modem first.
Put your phone on 850 mhz only mode. To do this just dial *#2263# in samsung dialer to enter the band selection utility. Enter menu [2] WCDMA Band en press on [5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V) and it should tell you W850 Only.
(Optional) You can dial *#0011# in samsung dialer to verify that you phone is realy using 850 band.
Reboot in recovery and update your modem with BVJJPD or BVJJPG version and reboot into android
(Optional) You can dial *#0011# in samsung dialer to verify that you phone is realy using 850 band.
Reboot into recovery and update your modem with the version of you choice (XXJVK or ZSJPG or XXJQ1 or BUJS1 or XXJVE etc) and reboot phone to android
Repeat step 2 and 3 and you should have network connection on 850 only. If it's not the case then you miss something and need to start again from step 1
If everything is good dial *#2263# again to reanable all the other fequencies so your phone can chose the strongest one depending on where you are. To do so select line [1] AUTOMATIC and it should said Select GSM & WCDMA All Bands. Then touch you optical menu button and hit back. Select Line [4] COMBI BANDS and click on the only one without asterisk ([8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)).
Enjoy any modem version with 850 Mhz enable
Here a link to download the modem needed in step 1 and 4. There is also this site wich is good to find any of the i9000 modem version. Ironically they put UGJL2 modem under captivate folder even if it's use for I9000m.

Could not say as I haven't tried GB yet. But If you can install zip from sdcard in recovery I think it will work. This would need confirmation from other user but I'm currently using JVK modem with JS8 (2.2.1) so the other way arround should work too but I can't confirm. Make a complete backup with clockworkmod (data + system) so if it doesn't work you could just restore the system partition and everything will be fine.

In theory your process should work. However, I may be doing something wrong, but the gingerbread boot loader does not allow older-CWM flashing of the modem files I have found. If there is a kernel that allows flashing of older CWM files, or if I can find the .bin files of the BVJJPD or BVJJPG so that I can flash them with Odin, it should most likely work.
At this time though, I can tell you that flashing a Froyo modem such as UGJK4 on JVK/B Gingerbread works. This is the configuration I'm running right now, and my 850 MHz band seems fully operational.
pardon the noob question but I'm on a local carrier (GCI in Alaska) and my phone doesn't get 3G when I travel to areas where it exists (I'm rural). I think they want to charge for adding 3G, even though it exists only when traveling.
I found a reference how to enable it:

Otherwise I only get Edge.
I've rooted the phone to install a couple things but haven't yet flashed any new firmware - it is buggy as heck (crashes a lot) so I'm reading the forums here - it is on baseband version XXJP2, thinking I may have to try something. Saw this thread and wondered if it would be of use to me.

Never heard of this model #. GT-I9000 is the international version and it will work on it if you are refering to this version.

Once you have the file on your phone it take only 2 reboot time. 10 min max. It's not that hard and I've explained every little details so every one could follow these steps. Plus you only need to do it the first time you flash a modem that's not supposed to support 850. After that you can swich to any modem and still have 850 working.
aftter doing steps 1,2 and 3 i get no reception (if i go back to 2100 mhz, i get the signal back).

To the OP, you might want to mention that this will NOT enable 850mhz on phones that do not have the hardware support!
I have enabled 850 on jvk and jvb modems with this method, they work fine with js8 froyo.

All the i9000 have the same hardware, it's just that software is not there on some version. Do you really think samsung will have made a chip that support 850/900/1900/2100 and another one with only 900/1900/2100. Complete waste of time to change the assembling line plus there is report of people with i9000 having reception on 850 band with this method.

If your operator uses 2100 frequencies it might not be using 850 too. Here in north america, operators use 850 and 1900 frequencie so we need to have both available but if your operator doesn't broadcast on 850 then you wont have any network!! My guess is that your operator uses 2100/900 or 2100/1900 frequencies or maybe they only have one. Where are you from?

Sorry sir, but you are completely wrong.
Samsung has a variety of modem chipsets used in their Galaxy S phones worldwide.
In the USA, Captivate has 850/1900/2100. Vibrant has 1700/1900/2100.
Elsewhere I believe the regular I9000 has 900/1900/2100 and the I9000M has 850/1900/2100.
There is not just one model and there is no way to activate a band on a phone whose modem is not compatible.
I wish all phones just had all bands (Nokia and Apple do the best job of this) but we are not there yet unfortunately. I too would think it would be more economical, but there could be other reasons like carrier lock in (i.e. in the US you can't switch a Vibrant to AT&T or a Captivate to T-Mobile without loosing 3G coverage).

That's why I said I9000 refering to i9000/i9000m/i9000t. The galaxy S in the US are all f***ed up. I Don't understant why samsung has to made such different model.
Then how do you explain that it's impossible to have 850 band working on any modem other than UGJL2, TLJL3, UGJK3, UGJK4 or UGKC1 without using this method. Be my guest and try to get 850 band on JPJ, JVK or any other european modem without using this methode in the first place. If you already did then it's not valid as the 850 band will stay. But I can confirm you that if you skip the part about BVJJPD or BVJJPG and then you try to turn on 850 band in the service mod with JVK you will never get reception on 850. I've tried it before I found this method on captivate forum.
So I might be wrong but I think it just a firmware limitation or compatibilities that blocks 850 bands when you have european or asian modem.
Flashing BVJJPD or BVJJPG does something special and after that you have 850 available regardless of the modem firmware you use.
If the limitation is realy hardware then samsung is complettly stupid but they seems to have learn their lesson as the SGS 2 is advertise as HSPA+ 850/900/1900/2100.
But I don't think we have any way of confirming any of these theory out of any doubt so I'll change my first post.
I am using this vibrant that i got from t-mobile. I live in Canada and have recently adapted the mobilicty network. I am noticing at at times the phone is having trouble communicating with their network even though i have full signal.
I am wondering if its something to do wit the radio or the rom.
So anyone know what rom or radio works best with mobilicty?
Hi kiazand. Glad to meet another Vibrant owner on Mobilicity. I have the same problem and believe it gets stuck scanning through the other carrier networks. I have only found a fix when using Froyo though.

Personally I only have WCDMA 1700 configured so my phone does not roam and I do not get charged every time a text comes through. Keep in mind though that 911 will not work if you do this and are outside Mobilicity coverage.
I am not sure if this works with Gingerbread ROMs based on the i9000, but I know it does not work with Cyanogenmod 7.

Sorry, but it's been said many times before. There is no 850 support for our device - officially or unofficially. The radio just doesn't support it. Samsung simply never removed the links to it in the servicemode, whether that's because it was there for testing, or pure laziness. If you're accessing the Rogers network, it's accessing it on the 1900 band
Well we do roam on rogers and that is their frequency as well.. Just saying.. I'm on Mobilicity too and love my vibrant.

If 2g youll have 850 roaming, but thats different than 3g roaming

I don't know I don't use data when roaming only voice so it doesn't matter. I'm not paying 5$/mb for roaming..

12. Exit SGS Tools
Personally I only have WCDMA 1700 configured so my phone does not roam and I do not get charged every time a text comes through. Keep in mind though that 911 will not work if you do this and are outside Mobilicity coverage.
I am not sure if this works with Gingerbread ROMs based on the i9000, but I know it does not work with Cyanogenmod 7.

Have you run CM7 on Mobilicity? It just shows up as a 5 digit number for carrier name rather than "mobilicity". Anyone seen a way around this?

That's normal for Nexus S that mobilicity sells so there's nothing wrong.
Also, whoever above said they get charged for incoming text while roaming is mistaken. You only get charged for sending.

This is from Mobilicity's website regarding roaming and texts. It would be great not to worry about incoming texts using up My Wallet.

In order to send or receive a text message or MMS message while roaming/outside the Mobilicity unlimited coverage area, you need to have money in My Wallet™. Each message you send or receive while roaming in Canada or the United States costs 10 cents, which will be deducted from My Wallet™. If you do not have money in My Wallet™ you will not be able to send or receive a text message or MMS message. You can add more money to My Wallet™ with a credit card or debit card by going online and logging into My Account, or by calling *611 and speaking with Customer Care.

The problem is that, I can't connect to LTE without losing my Network Radio Service Connection. I can connect to E/G/3G/H/H+ and still have network service, so I can still make calls and text messages, but when I turn on my Mobile Data, when it tries to connect to LTE, suddenly my service gets diconnected and I can't make phone calls nor messages though I could still use the data. I've already tried 3 LTE-Capable SIMS but the issue still happens.
What I had in mind is that it might be because it is Carrier Locked since it is a Korean Variant, but the problem still persists even after flasing other custom roms (this includes Note 7 Port ROMS, LineageOS, Stock-Based ROMS).
I love my Note 3, I will do anything to keep it alive, but still this one problem keeps bugging me...
Why can't I use both LTE data connection and radio service connection simultaneously?
Is anyone out there knowledge and willing enough to help us Note 3 KV users with this issue? :crying:

I get it now, when a phone is using LTE it means its not connected to any Mobile Network Service, instead it is connected to Data Network Service, yet it should receive Phone calls and Messages but it means that the phone will disconnect to LTE and switch to GSM/WCDMA (E/G/H/3G/H+) to be able to recieve the incoming call or message. I've tried that with my friends' phones, The first phone is connected to Data and is using LTE and the other phone is trying to call the first phone. The moment I call the first phone, I noticed that the LTE icon dropped to H and then recieve the call, It only happened because the option selected on the "Network Mode" (under Settings/More Networks/Mobile Networks-->Network Mode) is [LTE/WCDMA/GSM auto connect] so that's how it works
But that doesn't happen to my phone, after turning off the Mobile Data (I was connected to LTE btw) my phone doesn't automatically connect to GSM nor WCDMA network, it just stay on LTE mode and I have to manually select the GSM/WCDMA option in order to get Network Service.
So my final question is Why doesn't my Note 3 automatically switches Network Mode?

No it doesn't, the problem is already there even before I rooted my device. Flashing stock lollipop rom on odin didn't help either

Please start to read about LTE technology and its frenquency bands.
Then find answers to these questions :
1- My SM-N900L is locked to use which frequency bands ?
2- Wich bands are in use in my actual location (country) ?
3- Is it possible to unlock more frequency bands for my N900L ?
i can provide more help if things remains not clear enough.

I tried searching the supported LTE bands of N900L but I can't find any sites that tell exactly what the N900L actually supports though I found out on this forum

2) The models N900S / N900K / N900L are identical in the set of supported frequencies. If you rewind the topic on page 9, you will see screenshots of one of these models, which show the frequencies you are using, in one of the screens you will see the treasured frequency of LTE b7. I think that users of this topic can be trusted with respect to information in the topic, but no one has elected you the right to believe solely on the site www.frequencycheck.com.

I did try checking my phone on www.frequencycheck.com, N900L is not on the list..

N900S though shows that it supports Bands 3, 5, and 17.
I also look it up on wikipedia on where the SMART network (my current network) falls on the list of LTE frequency bands, and it shows that it is on Band 05 alongside with South Korean Networks LGU+ and SKT. The supported LTE bands on my country are Band 1, 3, 5, 7, 28 and 41

I searched for how to unlock all LTE frequency bands on N900L or Korean Variants or Note 3 but the only option that shows up is by accessing the Service Menu on Stock ROM and manually changing the values, which still didn't work for me.
According to my search, N900L is locked to :
LTE protocol : B1 (2100) and B5 (850)
LTE-A protocol : B3 (1800) and B7 (2600)
Now try to find the specific frequency band used by your carrier (he can't use all of the six available bands in Philippines), and activate it.
Wich stock firmware do you use when trying to access Service Mode ? It must be the LGU+ one.
And what code did you dial for the same purpose ?

When you said activate, you mean select the band to be used by the phone right?
- Yes, I used the LGU+ Lollipop Stock ROM
- I typed in the dialpad, *#0011# and changed the network preference to LTE ONLY.

I mean activate only the LTE's frquency band used by your carrier.

I've already done that, but the problem with radio service network is still present, I can't make or receive any phones calls nor messages.
