My xoom no matter what I try will not tether to my rooted atrix not through bluetooth, not wifi nothing. This is disappointing because the stupid ipad will.

Hi guys
i am considering the Xoom or the Galaxy tab 10 inches tablet but I am not sure I want to take another data plan when I can use my existing 3G plan on my HTC desire.
Does anybody know whether I can use my Desire's internet connection on the Xoom or other Android tablets in the same way as I use my Desire as a modem for my laptop? I think the Xoom lacks a USB port, but I could probably turn my Desire into a wifi hotspot. can anybody think of reasons why I would not be able to do that?
cheers
do a quick search. or look at the 1st page. It can be wifi tethered just like any other device. People are also running Bluetooth tethers no problem.
As long as you have WiFi tethering properly setup on your Desire, it can be shared to the Xoom just like any other computer.
bluetooth tethering? interesting idea i hadnt thought of before

thanks shame the Xoom doesn't have a usb port or I could have charged the desire while using it as a modem at the same time!!!!
I have tethered my Xoom to my rooted Inc no problems... My Inc is on my company unlimited data plan. So I will use it a lot except when the 4G upgrade happens.
I'm running mikfroyo 4.5, and I'm stoked about this rumor of the xoom wifi hitting sams club next month for 540. I loved the demo unit at the best buy closest to me, but of course in that one spot I didnt get 3g and I didnt bother trying 4g (pretty scarce in CT). Can anyone confirm that the sprint mobile hotspot app can give wifi to the xoom? I was reading another thread where the wifi tether app didnt so im a tad nervous.
I know the evo works with the xoom, but I use the built in cm hotspot.

I am running the Sprint Lovers ROM on my EVO and have no issues giving WiFi to my Xoom. Cause there is no way I paying for the ridiculous data rates with Verizon, especially since I have unlimited 3G/4G through Sprint.

The issue using the Evo with the Xoom is the people using the Wireless Tether app, which in that case puts the Evo into 'Ad-Hoc' mode, whereas using built in tether on a AOSP ROM, for example, makes a normal 'Infrastructure' mode that the Xoom can connect to.
As I understand it, that is.
sorry someone answered this for me on the evo forum thanks..
I use fresh and setup wireless tether on 4g and the xoom flies with it.
I have a nexus one and am curious I'd the xoom can be tethered to it. I use wireless tether.
i too have the nexus one, I also have the zoom and thether them all the time via the nexus one portable hot spot mode. Works great!

.
One of the things I really like about having the Xoom is it functions as a portable Verizon hotspot on my crappy sporadic at&t service on my Atrix. So yes, you can connect your Nexus to it or any other device that has wireless b or g. As of now, Verizon does not have a separate plan for tethering. It's included with any of their data plans.
I have been thinking for a month or so about activating my xoom instead of continue to tether it to my droid x. I found that like many, I rarely used my phone any more other than to talk on it. Plus, with verizon starting to crack down on tethering, I thought the time was right. I wasn't about to pay for two data plans, thats crazy to me.
So, I sold my droid x to a friend for $100 and went to verizon and bought an LG Octane and activated my Xoom. No more worrying about tethering and trying to get phone calls at the same time, I love it. No more worrying about wireless tether cutting in and out. No... the Octane is no where near the phone that the X is but I only use it to talk and text... and I love being able to use my xoom on the road for everything else.
Anyone else done something like this?
i too have a droid x and tether it to my wifi xoom. I would get rid of my xoom, but my kids use it to watch movies on, while i watch on my xoom. I couldnt do what you have done, as i dont need internet access that often.
I too activated my xoom. It makes it so much less an issue. I have a dx too but could NEVER give it up. I just bit the bullet and got the plan.

I did this the other way around, I use my Xoom alot, but I got the Wifi Xoom, and to keep work and play separate - I keep all work stuff on my Samsung Epic and all the play stuff on my Xoom.
I switched also, I use the xoom as a hot spot to tether my phone when i want data on it.
It's interesting the different ways people use their phones and the xoom. I guess that's what makes Android great, the flexability. I just can't imagine paying for data on a phone and the xoom. I have to $$$, I just don't want to spend it that way. lol
I'd probably do the same if the data plans weren't so expensive. I mean 3 GB for 35 a month? Really? I currently have an Epic 4G on an unlimited plan in which I can tether 4G. It works really well. But to be honest I don't even use it that much. Most of the time I am near Wifi so using 3G makes no sense in most situations. When the LTE upgrade becomes available, I may take another look and see if it makes more sense. I love my xoom though.
Having Sprint is great because we can tether 4G and it works great. I have a WiFi Xoom and tether from my EVO Shift 4G. Perfection.

Same, except with the regular Evo 4g.

Yea if I had sprint I would have probably just tethered to my phone also because Sprint doesn't seem to be cracking down on it like AT&T and Verizon are. Plus, with it being 4G you don't get cut off if you received a phone call while tether. That absolutely drive me crazy.
Also, Sprint sucks in my area so I had to go with Verizon.
Well, I just bought a wifi xoom and absolutely love it! I tether it to my Nexus one via wifi hotspot on my phone. (dont pay a dime extra) thanks to nexus However, I am really wondering if I should get the 3g/4g version of this and only pay for the net when I need it. It would be nice but is it that much better than tethering? Also, since the 3g is verison, does that mean updates will be treated differently than the wifi non branded version? Does version have more control over the updates or will they still be google ?
Thanks
