Well, the i9000 is pretty much just a Nexus S without the NFC.
Since the CDMA changes are apparently more complicated than Samsung can manage, we won't see Gingerbread for at least 12 months.
As a side note, I find it funny that after Sprint pulled their 2.2 update, it seems none of the Verizon release rumors held true (i.e. they pulled theirs).
Indicating a lot of these problems are due to Samsung Programming Sucktitude.

Just a couple of links about this. Idk if these have been posted or not.

You won't see Gingerbread released from Sprint for the Epic for at least 12 months (if ever), but you'll see it way sooner than that...Dameon already has CM7 booting and they started from scratch 2 days ago. I bet they'll have everything, except 4G, up and running in no time...

4G shouldn't be too hard either, our WiMax driver is in-kernel now.
We won't have to reverse engineer it ^_^

[Q] Froyo on the way?

I just read on Vibrant xda forum that Bhman/Eugene737 just posted a froyo rom on Vibrant yesterday.Does that mean Epic devs bout to have a port for us?
Check out the Vibrant xda section they have youtube video, rom gets 13 on Quadrant.
That would be ridiculous if it was made for the epic, the epic is vastly different from the other SGS phones

Is it that different? You saying that we can't have 2.2 ported minus physical keyboard, frnt camera and flash not working?Besides those things and different file system it is identical phone aint it?

Let see, physical keyboard, front camera, flash, file system, CDMA radio (Vibrant has a GSM radio), 4G radio. Yeah not different at all.

Well they both have an AMOLED screen and the Hummingbird processor...
Even if you were to get the Vibrant rom running on the Epic (after taking into account the differences in the file system) the phone would still be unusable. The Vibrant uses a different radio for phone calls, and data (3 and 4 G). So it would be pretty much useless as a phone.
When it comes down to it, this is still a galaxy s phone. But I don't think we should get excited until we see a port onto the fascinate, which is like the only other cdma galaxy s but more intune with the international version

Agreed, CDMA is definitely the kicker as we have no way of getting that from a vibrant port. Other than that it isn't that ridiculously complicated to port it to our phone so yes once we see the fascinate get it then we will be on a roll.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/21/samsung-comes-clean-with-galaxy-s-froyo-upgrade-dates-all-carri/
But then again... Who knows?
end of November.” now
Late last week, Samsung announced that the Froyo or Android 2.2 update would finally be coming to the Galaxy S smartphone this week.
It seems that this won’t be the case, however, as the firm has issued an update via its official Twitter channel.
Samsung tweeted: “The Froyo upgrade will be available in the UK from early November and we expect all operator versions to be available by the end of November.”
So, early November could mean two to three more weeks before it lands on Kies, the company’s own Windows based upgrade platform, with operators pushing it out after that. The cause of the delay is unknown.
The Froyo update will bring a number of new features to the very popular Galaxy S, including a speed boost, full Flash support and device tethering, along with Google Maps GPS navigation plus voice guidance.

That is Samsun'g official Twitter channel for the U.K. That timing corresponds to a new press release from Samsung for the U.K. The "all operators" referred to, quite obviously, are the telecom operators in that market.
The corresponinding Twitter site for the U.S. says there is no ETA yet.
And the earlier announcemetn you mentioned was also about overseas markets.

2.3????

guesses? rumors? news? anyone? lots of hype about this. but it kinda seems like vibrant is gonna get left in the dust seeing as how we are still on 2.1. from what i have been reading, 2.3 (gingerbread) will be out within a week! so us vibrant users will be 2 versions behind! (wtf tmo and samsung?) my thoughts are maybe they didnt update us cuz they where just waiting for 2.3 to come out and wanted to get all the updating done at once. but i do kinda live in a fantasy world (drugs are bad mmmkay) so what are the thought from the fine folks here at xda on this matter?

Jk2 is a build number of the most recent (and most important since its specifically for vibrants) froyo. Before this all the froyo roms out has been built off of other variations on diff models/carrier.
The fact that jk2 was leaked means the official ota for all tmobile customers is real and immenent.

I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3. Samsung will probably release 2.2 somewhere between 2-4 months behind the competition. That doesn't give me great hope that we'll ever seen 2.3. Figure that it took HTC/Motorola 2-3 months to turn 2.2 final into 2.2 custom versions to OTA, then we are looking at 4-7 months from now for 2.3 if all of the same timeframes hold. That's probably past the window that this phone will receive official updates.
well seems like the ported versions of the firmware updates have problems, like the headphone jack not working. or gps lagging ect. (not to say the developers didnt do a good job{ cuz they did an awesome job}) but i use that stuff lots. i agree with lex tho. i think that we will probly stop geting updates after awhile so that the newer more awesome phones can get bought up.

Tough call. I would say 1 year till official release...
mmmm im thinkin honeycomb (3.0) will be out within a year. prob not for our phones tho. we will have to upgrade to the we will have to upgrade to the galaxy t hahaha
2.3 won't be that different
2.3 won't be that different It will change the resolution mainly to allow a bigger screen Right now 2.2 really can only function on a 7 inch screen without some mods so 2.3 will have that integrated. 3.0 will have real differences, but Vibrant has become the developers phone of choice so, you will see that on the phone as soon as it gets out.

it is no more official than any of the others that are out.
I doubt it will take that long. Look, the Galaxy S took a while because these are the first phones using the Hummingbird CPU. People say HTC and Motorola are more on the ball, but they're using the same Snapdragon and OMAP cores since the beginning. Heck, Froyo was originally built for the Snapdragon--no wonder Froyo is easy to port to those phones.
Now they've got Froyo on the Hummingbird, I would think future releases will be easier to port based on the accumulated experience.

No. Froyo was pushed to the nexus one in late june.
HTC/Motorola pushed it 2-3 months after that and samsung will wind up another 2-4 months after that, depending on when they finally push it.
2.3 will be pushed any day now to the nexus one, so you can do the math from there if you assume the same timeline. My guess its that pushes 2.3 out of the window for the upgrade.
Guys.. Froyo should be out before Christmas. Team Whiskey and Eugene already got it. And tmobile is sending OTA to people with JI6 to downgrade back to JFD. They're preparing peoples phones.
Okay, we have froyo, now we are set... OH WAIT GINGERBREAD IS COMING OUT I AM NEVER HAPPY OTHER PHONES WILL HAVE IT BEFORE ME CRY CRY CRY CRY.
Seriously, I can assure you gingerbread is not going to come out this year.
And the N1 is the dev phone so of course it's going to be first to snatch up the latests firmware.
Heck, samsung or tmobile DIDNT PROMISE YOU ANY UPDATES. You bought the phone and that is it. They have your money, what are you going to do know? Didn't you check on the behold? I think they are stuck on 1.6 same as the Cliq. BE HPPY you got froyo.

Samsung to update all the Galaxy S line to Gingerbread

Its official. They will begin with the European phones at mid month (arent we there already?) and then move on to the American phones. I'm guessing we'll see a leak in about a month.

Well, I really can be hopeful, since I'll also have the NS4G (getting it today), if they don't release it, I'll just play around with GB on the NS4G, and when the Vibrant gets GB, I'll have 2 amazing phones (not like the Vibrant isn't amazing now, but just not taking full advantage of it's hardware).
This is great news! Hopefully they do step up their software updates and push it out or leak it faster than we expect.

Hell, I'd rather take a leak, so that our amazing dev's can create working ROM's out of them.
Yeah a leak would come in handy. We'd get new roms and maybe some stuff fixed in CM7/MIUI. The Epic 4G had a leak not too long ago and i think there looking at another leak that one of the dev groups has. The ones that got us our leaks here in the vibrant section were Eugene373 and Krylon360, and their both gone. =(

Binary roms will not help CM7 and miui roms with GPS because of the way Samsung calls on the GPS as compared to the way aosp calls on the GPS. This has been stated many times over, and yet still gets swept under the rug.
Even after the *kernel* source is released, it still contains nothing about GPS source.

GPS will probably never work for EVERYONE on the Vibrant... so might as well let it go and wait for some dev to make a mod that makes it work like Heathen's GPS fixes.
I was saying that GB would open completely new doors.
GB could help complete MIUI and CM7, as they are all Gingerbread based.
Even if it is AOSP, they have to use the things that Samsung gives.

ICS is supposed to be a type of "universal" update that brings all devices under one platform to unify android instead of being fragmented the way it is. I was doubtful that the sgs4g would get it but after reading up on it it does appear hopeful that devices like ours will get the update as well.

Officially? I'm almost certain that's a no. Took them 6 months to give us GB and this phone is about to hit it's end of life cycle.
But unofficially, most certainly. Kmobs and Zinx have this phone, the two prominent devs in the CM team. So I'm highly confident that through them, we'll be amongst the first batch of phones to get ICS via CM8.
Just my thought.

Not sure about that because to me, T-Mobile has the worst track record of phones getting updates.
The myTouch Slide 3G was promised Froyo last summer but didn't get it till earlier this year. And you can pretty much throw GB out of the equation for that phone.
The Vibrant has yet to even have a GB leak while the Vibrant 4G gets GB leaks every month or so. Which is sad.
The G2 was supposed to get GB very early but are now just getting it. And its life cycle already ended a month or two ago so that getting ICS is doubtful.
And that's just to name a few.

You would think the company that first introduced Android to the world, would set an example for everyone else on how to update your Android's in a timely manner. Instead they are usually the last ones to do so or they'll release a new version of the phone that is updated, an scrap the older ones. The only reason why i'm still with then is,i have good connection at home an in my area, an I don't want to spend the extra money for a etf.

From what I was told (by a German TMO sales rep), they have a fairly long internal QA process to make sure that a new ROM works (together with any of their own additions). So it usually takes them more than six months after a new ROM has been released, before it is officially available from them. This is not only true for Android, but is also valid for Blackberry and WP7.
FWIW... We switched to sprint. Hated sprint cdma. And t mobile is hardly the worst track record, all the carriers have been about the same. I think verizon and the droid line up is your"worst"...

I can understand a 6month time frame to get everything working. I had the mytouch 3g slide, an that took a year an a month(not sure, maybe 2) to get upgraded to 2.2, they didn't even do an ota. It was either do it yourself via HTC or go to a store an get it done. I think that's pretty bad though, it took them that long.
From my fist to your face, enjoy.
Yeah... I don't see why they need at least 6 months. I mean it took CM's team like a little over a month after GB's source was released to get it to multiple different phones. Plus CM implemented their CM Settings as well.
I'm not saying it's a wrong statement, just wondering how a group of mostly college kids can beat big companies to it.

Big companies = a lot of political bull****. They do what they can to make more money for themselves about 50% of the time.

No ICS from Samsung, but we will get it any way with CM9

No one was really expecting an official ICS for the Epic. By the time Samsprint would have gotten it to us we would all be on LTE phones so it doesn't matter.

yeah the LTE samsungs on sprint will be ICS or higher. There is a port in the works in the dev section thats getting support but its far from being useable.
I don't think we will get anything official, but we might get CM9 like we did CM7.
It doesn't say we won't get it. It says something like they'll announce other products that get it later. Don't get your hopes up, but don't count us out either.

Not going to happen for the Epic 4G. Phone is to old. Even if CM9 came around it won't ever get anywhere. CM6 never got finished, CM7 still isn't fully working, CM9 will be posted just to say look what I got to boot. People are moving on to newer phones.

I say the same.. why make updates for 1st gen phones when those user can spend more money upgrading to a new version.. thats how all company works. They cant sell new phones if they still have the older phones up to date.. Im cool with 2.3 on my phone maybe cuz i know i got a tablet which is gonna get ics soon..

What do you mean us? It'll work just fine on my SGS3.

Lol we're going to get CM9 buddy. We'll be officially supported by Cyanogenmod since now we have MTD like other Galaxy S variants.
I understand why you aren't in any way optimistic, however CM6 was discontinued due to it not being popular enough, CM7 is nearly finished, and it only took a long time since we weren't supported by Cyanogenmod and we didn't even have Gingerbread source until 2 months ago.
Now, I'm 95% sure our phone is picked up by Cyanogenmod and we will get official CM 7.2 as well as CM9.
When will that happen? Who knows? But we will get it, and I guarantee we will have at least an early build of CM9 in the coming months.
Don't lose faith
And OP: Did you actually expect our phone to get ICS? It took over a year to get Gingerbread after it's initial release, and I don't think Samsung will spend another year updating a phone that no one's going to have next year. We will get ports though, I'm sure of that. (WORKING Ports, that is. Not the one based off of the SDK)
You guys know the epic sucks major donkey balls on updates, why get yourself all worked up about something that will never happen? Just setting yourself up for disappointment. If you don't like it you have one of two options, use your phone as its built for (calls, texts, web) or buy a new phone just for an update.

If we get CM7 official, then we'll see CM9.
But,
ciwrl (CM team) said epic is slated for last because its full of nasty hacks. So who knows when...
ics on epic

Not all. I'm milking this pup as long as possible since I'm relatively rural and LTE will most likely be a late rollout.
Sent from my hoe. Forgive the typoes; it's an Epic.
Samsung change there minds again.. No ics or value pack....

[...] a Samsung spokesperson has said that the company will not offer the update due to the hardware specifications of the older Galaxy devices, in that they are limited to and fully optimised for the Gingerbread experience.[...]
Ha, ha ha, ha. They really claimed "fully optimised"? It took a lot of work to bring Gingerbread anywhere near stable, let alone "optimised". Also, isn't it optimized? Oh well, we never expected it in the first place, and even Gingerbread (broken as it was) was a surprise. If ICS is really wanted on the Epic, someone brighter than I will find a way to port it, I'm sure. At the same time, I'm quite happy with my phone.
Even if ICS came to the i9000 GSM Galaxy S, it would never ever come to the Epic 4G.
Why? We only have 512 MB of flash storage. ICS is big, and this would give us very little space for /data.
Fortunately, it is possible for us to work around this by putting /data on a SD card, but making the modifications for it would take time.
This is one of those things where MTD support is useful, since /system can now be resized.
