It seems that the status bar shows 3G full bars, then changes go no bars, then to H, back to 3G two bars etc. This is causing calls to drop and chatter.
I can set it to 2G only and is stable for calls but data is very slow. 2-300kbs.
Any ideas.

Hi i have the HD2 on 02 and when im in a 3G area my network operater changes to show 3G 02-UK but my signal bars dont change they stay the same as
(the 8th one down on the left of page 39)
the symbol to the left of the signal bars shows H with two arrows i havent seen my signal bars change to show
(5th one down on the right of page 39)
why is this?
Am i connected to 3G?
I have never seen my signal bars change like the ones on page 39/40?

The manual is wrong.
My O2 HD2 on t-mobile shows 3G/G/H in a white box when no data connection on.
When data connection is on, you will see 3G/H/G (and possibly E [t-mobile dont have E]) with arrows, indicating data is on.
The manual suggests that the signal icon will intregrate with the data icon whereas we see it as data icon then signal icon.
What you are seeing is correct.
When it shows 3G with arrows, you are connected to 3G, H is slightly faster 3G, E is edge (slightly faster 2G) and G is GPRS 2G.
ok thats cool so when i see the H with arrows this is faster than 3G so what are the actual speeds of 3G & this H thingy? and does this mean that my HD2 is connected to a faster connection than my mates iGay 3GS

The actual speeds may vary, depending on network, tower distance, how many people connecting on that tower etc etc.
basically
GPRS=2G
EDGE=2.5G
3G=3G
H (HSDPA)=3.5G
im sure this usd to work, but recently ive noticed it doesnt. when im in a call, my data connection disconnects. normally this isnt a problem, but sometimes i will want to look something up on the internet while in a call. like i said, im sure this used to work, but now it doesnt. im on t-mobile UK with an unlimited data plan, i have a near full HSDPA signal. im running the CleanEX DsE v15 ROM with Radio 2.11.
any thoughts
should work on 3g, not on edge or gprs
don't be confused by the left hand network symbol showing an H, that's just what your network is offering. the signal bars icon must also be showing H
i have a H as the left hand icon, and a little h above the signal bars. when i start a call, the smaller h changes to a picture of a phone. if i try and use any web features it just times out. when i hang up the call, my data connection seems to have been disconnected, as it shows a T shape above the signal bars, then changes back to the H after a few seconds
anyone having problems with 3g and signal bar being no signal or what not. did the *228 and fixed it but now its back to the same problem.. any idea??
Have you tried a reboot? And are you sure your mobile connection is on?
mine is doing the same thing.. goes up then down and to 1X a lot. according to the DB it is receiving good signal but just doesn't display the bars
I Have T-mobile US and can surf the web when I have a HSPA connection but not a 3G connection. What gives?

that is interesting...does a 3g signal coincide with a weaker signal? i've had that a few times, but after displaying 3g, it always jumps back to and H or falls back to edge. this is within android or wm.
just a generic answer, but try updating your radio

If I have any where between 1 to 3 bars in 3G I do not get any Internet but if it has 4 bars it will jump to H like you said. I have not gotten a edge signal.
I have the latest radio 2.15.50 guess I will try going back to 2.14 or 2.12
Okay so i've got an aria rooted and flashed with the Liberated 2.2 rom. I've been using it for the past 3 months and I've noticed that I will go from full service while a phone call is comming in and complete signal loss when I answer it. I have set the phone on a table and watched the network signal strength go from -113 dBm and 0asu to -81 dBm and 16asu and vise versa. I have also noticed that when I lose signal my "H" for the data goes with it and service comes back a few seconds later very strong but showing "G". From there it will go to "E" then back to "H".
Could anyone explain this or have a better reason as to why this is happening? Maybe its just based on the connection where I live but I've used the app Antennas and the tower is about 1/3 mile away.
Any info or help would be awesome

i'm not sure why this would happen outside of a poor bit of service where you're living.
i used the various roms for the aria and never had any sort of service loss issue.
as far as the icons switching around, e = edge network (2g), h = hspa (3g). when your phone drops its connection, it tries to reconnect as fast as possible, usually with edge, then after its strong it looks for the 3g connection.
