Source of updates? - Xoom General

I haven't seen a definite answer on this. Where are ota updates coming from? I assume Google is out. Are we getting updates from VZW or Moto? I assume moto since activating is optional. Anyone heard anything definite?

My guess is verizon. it has their logo. they supply the network. even if you are not in contract or even using their service, i believe since they have their brand on the device they will do the updates. Even on my phones, when i select check for updates or receive and update it disables my data connection to use for the update.

This is a complex issue. Both Google and Motorola will be responsible for the update.
Google will continue to update Honeycomb and fix any bugs it can.
Motorola will fix bugs specific to the Xoom and incorporate some changes that Google makes in the updates.
Verizon will be responsible for releasing the updates because they will do extensive internal testing on the update before releasing it onto their networks. People that don't have a contract with VZW will still get the update from their servers most likely though.

This is a Google experience device very similar to the nexus S and the OG Droid. While Verizon and Moto have a part to play in the update process, most of the updates for this device will almost come straight from Google.

What about the wifi version? Who will provide updates for that?

[Q] How will Optimus 7 updates be handled?

I have an Optimus 7 unlocked and on the US T-Mobile network. Works great, and I *truly* love this phone!
Anyhow, I was under the impression that most phone updates will be handle via the cell carrier. In this case, though, I'm on T-Mobile which doesn't officially support this phone. So, how will phone (firmware and/or OS) updates be handled? Straight from LG? Does anyone know?
Thanks,
Yip
Well, I am here to inform you that your impressions are incorrect. The updates are completely handled by Microsoft through Zune Software, and (possibly) through some Over the Air updates by carriers. There are some rumours going around that some carriers might block certain updates until they are done with testing, but the manufacturers and carriers do not dictate who and when and how updates are handled in general.
That's good news! In this case, I don't mind being incorrect
Thanks for the info.

Getting Lollipop on the Droid Turbo

Verizon has confirmed that they will eventually bring Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Droid Turbo. My question is this, as a Tmobile (Att, Cricket, whatever) user, will we also receive the update?
Does anyone else have any experience using Verizon phones on other networks, but stiill receiving the Software update when they become available for the phone? I'm not too concerned about not having root or an unlocked bootloader as long as Lollipop comes to the Droid Turbo with Motorola's light skinning, but If I won't be able to get that update when it becomes available since i'm on Tmobile, then i'll return this phone asap.

Purely a guess, but the update is done over the internet. So if you have an active internet connection, the code will tell it to check Verizon's servers for the update. I don't know that it would actually download the file over the T-Mo network, but if you put it on WiFi, it would really be no different than using the device on Verizon and WiFi, right?
Sort of like updates for a device that isn't activated anymore. You can still download the OTA over WiFi even if the device has no SIM, etc.

If it does happen to work like that, then you can just pop out the Sim and mash the Update button. I mean, you could probably leave the Sim in, but without one its effectively a "Verizon phone without a Sim installed".
You both make perfect sense. I just updated two HTC M7's over wifi with ATT's update. There was no sim and no issues. Thanks, I I'll keep my Turbo then. Love this beast.

Of course it might not work like that. But I would think you could somehow get the OTA zip and force it to update. I am not sure though.
So I'm not the only person using the Turbo on AT&T. I hope we get lollipop soon tho... But this phone is a beast holy crap. Only getting about a day out of it, but my screen is always on. Waiting for root and bootloader unlock tho.
As long as you can get the signed ota zip, which someone always posts, you can just flash it yourself

Different update for T-Mobile pure ?

Is there really a different marshmallow update for moto pure that's on t mobile ? That's why I bought an unlocked phone to start with. T mobile has always been bad about updates. Need answers please
No, update should be the same, only reason we haven't gotten it yet on T-Mobile is because T-Mobile hasn't approved/certified VoLTE/Band 12/etc for their network.

What's the implication of that for us here..would you install it by removing SIM & download over Wi-Fi or are you waiting for a more official rollout to T-mobile (or not installing it for other reasons people are complaining about like Wi-Fi+browser+call network issues)?
MM is running great for me. Sideloaded it when it was first posted as a soak test. That update was apparently for Verizon/Sprint users but look at the update being rolled out to AT&T users, its the same as the soak test. Either T-Mobile certifies the current update and we end up getting the same exact update as everyone else, or T-Mobile tells Motorola it doesn't meet their requirements and Motorola rolls out a new build with the specifications set by T-Mobile, which Verizon and all other carrier users will get also since the builds are not carrier specific and neither is the device.

Hmm so you've been running MM for weeks on MXP on T-Mobile with no issues & worst case scenario everyone would get another update later that meets T-Mobile requirements so no reason not to install?
What about the people complaining about slow browser performance-Wi-Fi-call-network issues?

My browser works fine. I rarely get any issues and if there is any, it's just slight lag on this website. WiFi and calling is fine for me. I do get band 12 when I'm at work in certain areas but I'm on band 4 99% of the time

So you have no regrets.. good to read.
I mainly use Boat+floating+Chrome browsers but occasionally use others..any ideas why people are reporting browser issues & you experience a slight lag only on this website?
Why is T-Mobile taking so long to certify the update?
Still no t mobile update. Thinking about pulling sim and doing update. But if and when t mobile certifies it will it update again any thoughts ?

Android 7.1.1 or later for Verizon Customers?

I have a 64 GB Nexus 6P, currently running Android Nougat 7.0. Verizon is my provider. On 12.5.16, I received a notification that the update to 7.1.1 was available, but when I attempted an OTA, I did not get the update, nor the security patch. I read on the internet that Verizon blocked the update for Nexus 6P customers due to a SIM issue with this update. I am still running 7.0 and Settings shows my phone as up to date. Verizon has not been able to provide any information about why this update was blocked. I was told by a T-Mobile store supervisor that their Nexus 6P customers did get the update to 7.1.1. If I were to leave Verizon and switch to T-Mobile, allowed the update to 7.1.1, but then found T-Mobile reception was not good, I don't think I could return to Verizon with a phone updated to a version they had blocked. I was looking forward to Visual Voicemail, which I believe was introduced in 7.1.1. Could someone tell me if this block from Verizon is expected to affect all future Android upgrades for my Nexus 6P or is Google known to be working on a fix. ?Am I blocked from any future upgrades now that Verizon has blocked this one? Verizon told me there was a similar issue for the Pixel, but it was fixed because Verizon sells the Pixel, but never sold the Nexus 6P.

There are many "stuck" posts on XDA, but sometimes the Verizon ones get buried. Your phone is not blocked from getting an update, nor have Verizon phones been blocked- it's just stuck and sometimes that just happens. There is a 7.1.1 January update expressly for Verizon phones (N4F26J) that includes a new modem to address the Visual Voicemail and other Verizon specific issues. You can try various methods to force the OTA again such as a SIM swap, but you can also download and flash the full OTA directly to the phone. You don't have to be unlocked or rooted to do this. To address the other part of your question, you can definitely swap out SIMS from different carriers and go back and forth- not just in the US but many countries overseas as well. That is the beauty (and purpose) of owning a carrier unlocked phone.

Telus / Koodo updates

I always got updates bas quick as Essential released them.
June Telus listed the PH1 as EOL (end of life) and pulled all products from their store.
Now I have yet to receive the July update. Anyone else?
Is this how Telus decides to do things? As soon as a device is EOL ignore it and pull out the "we have to run extensive tests to make sure the manufacturer's update is compatible with our network and systems" excuse to hold up updates (ie, ignore the device) to get you to "upgrade".

Pull out the SIM, restart, and check for an update. You should get the update direct from Essential. I use a Telus device, albeit with Bell and everything has been smooth sailing when it comes to updates.
As for the carriers in Canada I think we can all agree that their best name is Robellus.
Already tried that.
I suppose it will show eventually.

The same here, no July updates on stock 8.1 / Koodo. Makes me think to ask for refund
So your phones are not unlocked eg they are locked to a carrier?
All Canadian phones are unlocked.
Telus was the only carrier (and it's subbrand Koodoo) that sold the Essential so Essential lets them handle the updates.
Usually, in Canada, when you place a sim card in it is "provisioned" for that carrier. The updates are then handled by that carrier.
For example, my HTC U11+ (a phone not carried by Telus) needs to he on Wifi to get an update notification.
Hence the "take the sim card out" suggestion.

Well that is unfortunate.

Put in a sim from another carrier to get the update. I have a chatter sim I use for the purpose.
I know we did the Sim swap thing on Motorola devices and it worked fine.
Well that would work if I had a sim from another carrier!
Might be worth buying a prepaid sim for that purpose though.

You don't need an active SIM, just any other SIM.
That's what most people do.
Finally got "P' pushed by Koodo today. 1047M update to .091 build.
