Quick Comparison of Notion Ink Adam vs. Motorola Xoom
check out the video!
both tablets are great. but just note, one is running froyo and the other one is honeycomb
So the Adam can handle 720p-1080p mkv files? I thought the Tegra2 was incapable of doing that.
build quality
Looking at the FCC teardown photos I'm very concerned about build quality with the Notion Ink Adam. While I like the idea of a eink and LCD display combination I'm too scared that their tablet will break prematurely and I'll be left with no option for replacing it.
Yeah. It was pretty shoddy. Looks like it was made in India or something.

Why does the Xoom look so laggy while swiping home screens? The Adam is smooth as silk, but the Xoom is horrendous looking.
where did that guy get that clock and date widget?

More than likely the huge number of widgets and the Clock live WP thats doing that. Very surprising though as every unboxing/review I've seen shows extremely smooth performance out of the Xoom.
My xoom is running silky smooth 95% of the time. For the rest of that 5%, I look forward to future OTA updstes and the modding community.

Im sure it is the live wallpaper and the widgets, but the Notion Ink is running the exact same widgets and live wallpaper isn't it? And isn't the Notion Ink running Froyo which does not hardware accelerate the UI while the Xoom is running Honeycomb which does hardware accelerate the UI? And they both have the exact same SoC. Is this just Honeycomb being buggy?

Yea that's why I'm not completely sure. They're very similar hardware, and I've never seen a Xoom lag like that, it looked pretty bad lol.
If they are both 10 inch screens and he shows both screens to be the same length, how is the xoom screen width noticeably wider?

Because the Xoom has a 16:10 aspect ratio screen compared to the NI 16:9.

Can someone compare the screen angles on the two? I have seen the NI adam screen angles compared to the g-tablet and they are very similar. It would be interesting to see how the xoom angles stand.
Well, that pretty much blows the idea out of the water that the Tegra 2 can't handle HD video, as obviously the Adam is handling it just fine. Just a software issue it looks like, which can be fixed.

I was really interested in this tablet but after seeing all those beautiful tablets that are going to come out soon. Notion ink looks Like a last year tablet because of the size of its bedazzled. I'm happy that I didn't preorder this device.

Cool, got any links to any tablets in CES that have PixelQi screens? Or perhaps at least IPS? I would especially be interested in a 7" platform.

I had never heard of notion ink before CES. I for one was really surprised at how unique this tablet was compared to all the others. It had to be one of the hottest "if not the hottest" tablet at CES. I heard there was a lot of hype about it and i can see why. I didnt get to hold it but it was very impressive. The PixelQi screen was also very impressive, i think im most impressed with the battery life it offers and the fact that when in a bright room or outside with bright sunlight its crystal clear compared to an ipad that is super reflective and not readable at all in direct sunlight. Overall i was very impressed and plan on purchasing one.

160 hours use with the backlight off on the PixleQi units.. And not an eink or ereader, static black and white screen. It's in color, allows for motion and videos..
Why would I want to buy, own, carry around several devices, when I can own/carry one that does it all..
It has Bluetooth and GPS, 10.1" GPS, Internet, social, MP3, Youtube/HD Video player, on your DASH!
Oh and it is real and available now... Not just a prototype or just an idea, like those shown at this year's CES.
-CC
Spec wise the only one that might give the Adam a run for its money is the Motorola Xoom, but thats debatable. Especially when you consider that the Adam is shipping, its pre-order was sold out, had the swivel camera, and the Pixel Qi display. It also has a customize OS Android 2.3 with a UI overlay that simply looks and runs smoother than Google's own 3.0 Honeycomb.
Which by the way was announced but still not yet available in any tablet. Even the Xoom. No one at CES was allowed to play with it and see the Honeycomb OS in action on the tablet. So basically its not yet available. Plus No price mentioned and certainly no availability date announced makes the Xoom or any other tablet at CES unavailable for some time except the Adam.
With the Motorola Xoom being tied into a carrier, I rather have the Adam tethered to my EVO and be able to go outside with it and still surf, read play games etc.

Agreed and Notion Ink has already said they are going to keep updating eden and put honeycomb on the tablet when it comes out. Also Notion Ink is focused on the adam because its their only product at the moment.
the device looked very sturdy imo. i was one of them who preorder and i cant wait to get it into my hands and start install applications on it . i actually need it as a e-reader for pdf documents also

I think alot of people will have thier mind made up for them when the prices for the xoom are published. Based on what I've read online, I'm actually getting 2 adams (LCD with 3G) for the price of 1 Xoom. Assuming they do ship them soon...
Zuber
Since the Adam seems to be highly hackable and it'll be more or less officially supported to hack the tablet as opposed to the Motorola one, who are notorious for locking their devices down to an insane degree (See: Milestone (2) Droid 2, Droid X and so on. And I'm pretty sure the Tegra theoretically supports the same "High Security" mode the TI chips have, it's just not used yet), this isn't really a question for me. Go with the good guys that let me "own" my device.

Listen, I'm not a fan boy of anything. I'm just an honest person. What makes a device good is not only the hardware but also the community following it. Notion ink has had people drooling over the Adam for nearly 3 years. The CEO actually answers many of my emails and takes into consideration what the public wants. Awesome company and I believe there will be lots of great things to come.

jon4lakers on YouTube should have one up pretty soon. They usually post videos every few days so hopefully sometime this week since it was a week ago that Noah did his impressions on the 10.1 and said Jon's Transformer is on the way to him for a head to head comparison.
Sceen wise, and this is going off other posts in this forum and my experience with my Transformer and iPad2, the Sammy screen should be the same as the Transformer but more saturated in color. Comparing my Transformer to my iPad2, it's more neutral in color but imo is a tad sharper due to the higher resolution. In another thread 2 members confirmed that the Samsung screen on their I/O 10.1's were a bit more saturated in color than the iPad2.

I've also been waiting for the Techno Buffalo comparison although I think it will be fairly predictable as each has it's pros and cons. In the end I predict they will conclude you need to check out both and can't go wrong with either.
I had the TF but it died after one day so I returned it and I'm now waiting for the Tab 10.1. I prefer something slim and lighter over having a built in USB/HDMI which I'd rarely use.
Also - FWIW and I think I'm an outsider here but I'm using a Xoom now (with 3.1) and it much snappier than the TF I was using, although the TF did die so maybe it had some hardware issues.

I'm curious which one has worse screen bleeding aka light leakage.
Another video from the same youtube account.. GT10.1's screen is definitely more vibrant which I really like. I always thought my Transformer, although a beautiful screen, was too neutral in colors for me.

I use my Adam PQ as an outdoor reader. I like it better than the dedicated readers like kindle due to how easy it is to drop an ePub in drop box and have it available on all my devices. Wonder if they have drop box working on the eink Nook.
what kind of launcher is that on your adam?!
Its always a hard job beating samsung on displays
looks very good. Truthfully, the screen is the one part about the Adam that I dislike.
The video almost makes me want to get one.
Just thought I would chime in and let you know I have the Eink Nook and have dropbox working great on it. After all the hacks to it I do get a bit less battery life, but it is still more than usable.

Im sooooooo excited! I have been waiting for the extra $ since the TF was talked about and was finally able to get it today at Toys R Us!
Its charging now so don't want to play with it till its fully charged.
Question is:
What do you recommend I do the first few hours after is being charged? Any particular applications I should try? Should I root right away? If so what Rom should I install? What defects should I be aware of/check?
Any other suggestions will be appreciated ;-)
I know its a silly post, but I kinda got overwhelmed/intimidated the first 10mimutes after I turned it on!
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
You would be wise to never root until you are SURE that you have a good unit.
Check the speaker balance.
Go into a dark room and put on a total black jpeg and this will allow you to look for major light bleeding or white "blobs" in the middle of the screen.
Update to the newest Honeycomb ( 3.1 UNROOTED FOR NOW )
The play with it for a few days. If you are happy THEN AND ONLY THEN should you root and heap the full benefits of the Asus Transformer.
1. Look for dust under screen, light bleed (particularly on corners and the lower left) and dead or stuck pixels. Make sure you ramp up brightness to the max before checking.
2. You might also want to note sound quality (is one speaker louder than another) and overall volume before applying any updates.
3. Now go and check if there are any updates using the Check for Updates option in the Settings.
4. Afterwards, check sound again. Note any changes to overall volume and balance.
5. If by this point you've hit none of the issues so far, I guess someone else will have to help you as to what you should do next. I haven't gotten this far since I had to send mine in to get it butchered within the same week I got it.
If however you find any of the issues above, cry and keep it to yourself or bring it to TRU and hope they do an exchange. Some fanatics on here will tell you QC issues don't exist and you're part of a conspiracy to pressure Asus into adopting better QC.

There are certainly issues with every product out there, including the Transfomer, but I think sometimes they get overblown a bit. Like the light bleed, mine has just a little, but is it enough to bother me? Nope. In fact, from what I can tell almost all IPS screens suffer from some amount of it (look at the iPad 2), it's just the way it is. Mine has been awesome, and I haven't had any major issues, maybe I just took more time out to "smell the roses"

I can accept light bleed if it was about a 2-3mm line of gray on a black background on the edges of the screen but in my case the band was inches, not mm. That's not overblowing it, that's reality. I don't overblow things, I call it as it is. Inches of gray screen on a black background is bull****! It kills the image quality and ruins dark movies.
If you haven't had that you wouldn't understand and of course the people who do have massive light bleeding look like crazies to the people who don't who think they're seeing the same thing we're seeing. I assure you it's different. How do I know? I have a friends unit to use as reference and the level of bleeding on his pales in comparison to mine.

I've compared it to several iPad's as well, it definitely looks great in comparison, and we have all the extra goodies like HDMI out, MicroSD Slot and the Keyboard Dock I have to wonder if the light bleed is similar for all for the IPS Screens, but it just happens to bother some more than others, though I'm sure some did escape the factory with bad screens, like all hi tech devices the more complicated they get the more chance for mistakes. I have the Keyboard Dock and this is my laptop, in fact I sold my laptop to help pay for this, and I haven't looked back, this is just more fun to use PLUS I can leave the keyboard when I don't need it or the extra ports, try doing that with a laptop
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!
Couple of questions:
I have MIUI as my daily Rom on my DInc and really got used to organizing my apps in different folders. Does honeycomb offers such feature? If not, how do you manage to organize your apps?
Also, im looking for defects on my TF and so far i cannot notice any light bleeds. How do i see whether one speaker is louder than the other? They both seem ok, but cant tell for sure.
Thanks!

Didn't see this posted...
The guys at Gizmodo posted a report by DisplayMate which pitted the iPad 2 against the new Samsung G10.1, Asus Trans and Moto Xoom in series of tests to determine the best overall screen quality- fidelity, contrast, viewing angle, etc. And while the main point of the story is how the Sammy knocked the iPad off the No. 1 spot for the first time, I thought what was said about the screen on our third place Iconia's was pretty interesting. Overall it beat out the Asus, but it also was tops in other categories that they thought were very important, specifically- the best calibrated screen of all the tablets- something I guess Android tabs have been derided for in the past (as still are from what the post says of the other droid tabs). Yet another confirmation that the Iconia is the dark horse of the current Tab lineup.
Anyway, here it is-
http://gizmodo.com/5824807/the-best-tablet-displays-ipad-2-just-got-dethroned
I have to admit I was impressed by Iconia. For a budget tablet it exceeded all expectations!

Lol, exactly! Or is it the one with the plain Honeycomb OS...?
But I guess that's what makes comparisons like this worth doing... between IPS on the Trans and iPad, Super LCD on the Iconia and what ever tech the others are boasting about, it's one of the few things that set these tablets apart at the moment. I amazes me how differently they perform or what apps work on one brand but not on another still.
