High Profile Video. - Xoom General

ok, so is it true we will never get to be able to play 1080p video because of our cpu ?

You can play 1080p videos, they just have to be encoded exactly how nvidia wants them to be encoded for them to play. 1080p baseline profile should play fine. If you are asking if you are simply going to be able to download a file and transfer it to the xoom and have it play, then that is probably not going to happen as most if not all hd video uses high profile h.264 encoding. Never say never though.

I love everything about the tablet. I sold my I pad for it! Ill look into different decoding methods but dang this is sad... I haven't seen a sucessfl solution to play correctly. I starting to think there is no native movie app because they knew it sucked. Ill give them until march 2nd.

Can your iPad play high profile H.264? Just curious ... I have never owned one.

my I pad will play "1080p" video from youtube downloaded and my xoom will not. They are .Mp4 files.

Try if you can play high profile encoded video.

Does RockPlayer & mkv work on the Xoom?

Anyone tried the RockPlayer app on Honeycomb?
That's one of the reasons why I got one, watching my .mkv movies without have to transcode them.
RockPlayer + mkv works PERFECT on my Evo, loved it so much, I paid $10 to buy the app!
*which is still cheaper than a movie ticket where i live
Yes...
I've tried MKV and Rock but no luck. I get video flawlessly but no audio. If I get audio it's really low voice (kind of like a bad kid napping movie calling the police type )
Sadly I think we need to convert video files to an exact format/type.
At least that's what I've gathered.

Sorry, I did a search and there were no posts about Xoom and RockPlayer. Plenty of posts about RockPlayer working on GTab and other devices tho.
But it's good to know that it works fine!
rockplayer isnt optimzed for tegra yet but it does work. Not sure if theres any apps that are programed to use 2 cores
Unfortunately it's still file specific. Overall MKV's and high quality mp4's are struggling even with Rockplayer, vPlayer, etc...but certain mkv files and mp4's with specific encoding are working. we need to keep our fingers crossed for software patches fixing these issues.
u guys should try Vplayer. see if that works. I dont have a xoom yet but usually when rock player gives me problems with movie files on my phone. Vplayer always plays it perfect.

Tried vplayer, qqplayer, rockplayer. No love.
Its a Tegra 2 issue. It is unable to decode high profile h.264 video, which almost ALL mkv files and h.265 video is due to its superior compression. It can only decode baseline profile h.264. I am unsure if it can decode high profile 720p video, but I wouldn't bet on it. Basically, the Tegra 2 is awful for media playback compatibility, and no one seems to be prodding Nvidia or mentioning it at all in the media.
In a different thread there is a bit different info about this issue (quite depperesing I have to say):

To be fair, I don't have a Xoom to test media on, so I am just going by reports from other people/outlets. I am amazed that a bigger deal hasn't been made about this glaring flaw though in the tech blogs.
Same here. This should be shouted loud and clear! Watching movies is one of the first thing 99% of ppl will want to do on the very first evening...
If I would find out that I just spent $800 on something that will not it (ever) + has a lot of other thing "coming soon" I would be.... upset (and back to shop next morning).
Lets face it... just for mobile web browsing without flash there are cheaper devices... (much cheaper).
With the rockplayer I had no probs with MKV. It would play divx avi, but no audio. It would not play H.264 mp4.
The honeycomb player had no problems with mp4

The Tegra 2 CANNOT play HIGH PROFILE 1080p - it CAN however play ANYTHING lower - this includes 1080p low and medium profile AND all 720p profiles.
The problems that people are having are due to CODECS and nothing more..

It's always about the CODECS...

Fyi - for movies use Rockplayer Universal, not Lite.

Just thought I would throw out that there is a huge difference in performance and stability on the Xoom when using Rockplayer Universal from the Rockplayer website versus Rockplayer Lite in the Market. Many(not all) of my playback issues have been solved. Hope this helps some people.

What playback issues were you having that were resolved? Are you playing avi's or mkv files?? Tried h.264 high profile encoded videos in either 720p or 1080p?
Unfortunately no, it does not resolve the mkv issues. But the overall playback quality is much improved for me. Xvid files are playing much smoother. There is much less tiling and pixelation and improved audio quality.

I have problems with Rockplayer freezing my Xoom when I play AVIs and change the scaling. However, if I leave it alone, it does play files that the stock video player doesn't.
I just tried playing an AVI and it seems to be playing just fine
Everyone is complaining about the high profile HD. It is sad something this powerful has a crazy limit or flaw but, In reality if you wanted to watch those are you really going to put that many movies on a micro SD card? Most of my TV shows and movies are avi. 10 hours of playback I want more to watch.
What I would have liked is a better way to stream from my nas. Sucks to have to copy over to watch something.

In reality yes. I want to copy what I have available quickly to the SD card and walk out the door. With the HD high profile issue, I have to convert everything I want to watch on the Zoom before I can walk out the door. Just converted a 2 hour 720p MKV movie using Handbrake and it took one hour to complete. But it does look very nice and works properly.
Is there any tablet out there that you can just throw any high profile HD video and it will play flawlessly?
Let me check, one of the best tablet right now is iPad.
No, it cannot play high profile video:
http://www.zeropaid.com/news/87921/ipad-as-video-device-not-so-much/
The iPad can only play back video files in .mp4, .mpv, and .mov file formats with H.264 video at Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps/48kHz. In other words, the iPad basically plays back video in the iTunes format and really nothing else.
So, I would not complaint much probably.
I know, there are some single core phones that can play high profile video.
But probably, Tegra 2 offers something else which those single core could not, for example: good battery life? Or ...?

Average 720P movie in high profile h.264 is under 5 GB. Xoom has 30gb free space. Also, don't forget tv shows in 720P which are around a GB for 42 minutes.
And don't forget that as soon as the Xoom is given CIFS support, it will be able, or should be able rather, to stream movies and whatever else off your network.

My iPad looks amazingly smooth on high profile x264 files encoded by Handbrake. The XOOM chokes so badly on these files it looks like a bad slideshow. YOU ARE WRONG.

[Q] How do you play Video?

This may sound completely stupid, but how do you play video on your xoom? I mean there isn't even a dedicated video app. How the hell do you release a tablet and expect it to compete with the I pad without a native video player or support for most video formats? I just transferred a couple of avi files that don't show up anywhere because there's no app to play them.

Ya i just tried a couple of files i had already converted for my moms ipad. a couple were DVDrips and those played pretty much fine using rocklayer. But one was a converted 1080p music video. The music video played fairly well but there was a noticeable difference in the frame rate from the standard def videos.it wasnt at all choppy but it wasnt as fluid as i would have liked. If this is what im going to have to expect from HD video then im definitely not sold on this tab.

then click on the gallery app and there it is. the quality is great too

You can use Handbrake, a free video encoding program. I found that redoing h.264 high profile to h.264 main profile(see the link) and dropping motion estimation method to diamond, Subpixel ME & Mode Decision to 0, and avg bitrate to 4000 kbps makes for a lower encode time(20ish minutes for 1 hour on my i7 920 win 7 64bit). Excellent quality too vs original.
I'm attempting to convert a 720p copy of inception using handbrake right now. (6 hrs estimated time) what a pain in the ass. I set it to the APPLE preset. Which I'm hoping/assuming is what one would use for the ipad. Ill let you guys know how it turns out. If it does work won't be so bad as I can just set a bunch of files to convert in queue while i sleep.

Can Xoom play Youtube 1080p or 720p videos ?

Can the Xoom play Youtube 1080p or 720p videos ? I'm not interested in 1080p or 720p movie or video files playback. I want to know if the Honeycomb Youtube app has the option to play 1080p or 720p videos. The last time I checked a Xoom and its Youtube app in the store, it just had a HQ option, I couldn't find any option to select 720 or 1080p's. Please suggest. I spend lot of time on Youtube and I need this feature. It is one of the critical features, that helps be decide to go for the Xoom or not. Thanks.
I believe once the final version of Flash 10.2 is out the Xoom should be able to play 720p Smooth.

anywho, we were discussing 1080p playback on Youtube, not a 1080p file being played natively on the xoom.
just because on the youtube title its marked as '1080p' doesn't necessarily mean its being played in 1080p. its most likely playing in 720p, can't confirm, but theres no point in playing a 1080p file on a 800p device. thats all im really trying to get at.
I'm pretty sure it can, set you browser agent to iPod, go to youtube website and search for 1080p, it will play any of those HTML5 streams in 1080p. Make sure you add

[Q] Does Xoom Plays a 1080p file?

Does the native player of Xoom also plays 1080p video files
ie. mp4, avi, wmv, etc.
If not, does other players like vplayer, mobo could make this possible?
I doubt as Motorola Web and Wikipedia say the Xoom can play
"Up to 720p video" but sure it's not quite enough as long as HDMI it to a 32" TV.
Therefore is it possible for Xoom playing 1080p video smoothly?

true. 1080p will trouble as much to bill clinton.
you can convert a 1080p mkv to mp4 format and it will play with no issues. or converting, i suggest DVDCatalyst.
See, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 states 1080p video playback
I wonder is there any meaning the video playback ability of GT10.1
has overpower to Xoom?
BTW I personally hate converting.
My ideal Tab is a replacement for netbook,
which with proper software and codec
almost nothing it won't play.
So if there's something tablet is incapable of
please let me know.
Thanks for all your replies, they really make a difference.
All the tegra 2 tablets are similar software wise.
The 10.1 won't play videos any better than the xoom. Return your android tablet if you expect it to replace windows.

Using Moboplayer (from market) with Tiamat 2.2, 1080p video will just about play, but its not ideal.
720p is fine.
I only play file resolutions up to 720p on the Xoom because of the native resolution. I use Mobo player for my .avi and DVD Catalyst converted .mp4 files but if I am in a rush and have a high bit rate 720p .mkv file, the Dice player plays everything I throw at it. I have monitored my usage of both and I really mainly use Mobo. Dice comes in handy when I just don't want to wait for a conversion because I am heading out on short notice and is the only player I have found to play high bit rate 720p .mkv x.264 files. I prefer converting because I can give the video files a color boost in DVD Catalyst since videos seem to lose their punch on the Xoom screen.
Dice player plays 720p no prob

I've had good results with BSPlayer.
One thing is beyond my understanding.
My past Samsung infuse with 1.2ghz single core processor was able to play 1080p itunes trailers but xoom tablet struggles.
Also Xoom has native support for .mp4 files and .mov/.mkv/.avi requires extra treatment whether extra player or software decoding.
.........................
on a general note (covers most mobiles and tablets and/or android os)
why companies release crippled products to market?
The end user is left to work out what is working and what is not.
Xoom is upper range product and it is not acceptable that it can't play 1080p files smoothly.

The Xoom does play 1080p but how well depends on the codec and player. As for why you would want to play 1080p videos on a 720p screen, I just can't comprehend. It will not look better because the screen resolution is lower than 1080p. If you played 1080p on any screen lower than 1920x1080 pixels you will not be getting the benefit of the 1080p resolution.

If you must keep the resolution at 1080p then the best thing for stutter free playback is at least convert into an .mp4 which DVD Catalyst does but again, there will not be noticeable quality increase over a 720p. If I had a 1080p .mkv that I wanted to play on the Xoom, that would be one of the times when I would prefer convert or downsize but for everything else including 720p .mkv, we no longer need to convert.

From my perspective you are badly missing the point - what use is a tablet that can play videos if you have to carry around a pc to convert them first. Its a pain in the butt.

I use Dice Player to play all my video. It is easily the best HD movie player out there and plays high profile 720p but I haven't tried 1080p. As I don't have a 1080p TV, there's no need. Check out the Dice Player trial.

Thats just the thing though, we need to be realistic. You don't have to convert any videos other than high bit rate 1080p which even if you were only using a desktop PC you would need to meet a system requirement to play. Tablets like these are new. Could you imagine a few years ago having a 1Ghz laptop with 1GB of RAM and being pissed it wont play my 1080p movie in 3D? The Xoom is one of the first of it's kind and was never designed to play high bit rate 1080p and you find that a bother. It's like buying an Ipod 8 yrs ago then saying what good is this if all my CD's wont play on it. You had to rip & convert everything or buy the file which was still then converted. The screen is 720p. Most shows on T.V. are 720p or upscaled 720p (1080i). Where are you getting 1080p videos from, Blu Ray and digital copies which all need to be 'converted' in order to become a portable file on any system unless you have a disc player or made a 20GB image rip. Its not a pain in the butt to have to only convert one file type. My laptop is very powerful but cant play movies in 3D yet my T.V. can, should I be upset? I should add, Dice player is still the way to go to play all files with no conversion unless you want to play high bit rate 1080p on a screen not designed for it.
