I installed Juice Defender 4-5 days ago. I'm running it with the older netarchy-toastmod 4.1.2 kernel. I already had disabled my always-on data connection. I want to say my battery life has improved by at least 50% with this combination (Juice Defender reports a 1.83x improvement, and it may actually be close to that).
My phone has been on battery for 11 hours and 11 minutes. I'm at 55% battery, with the following (moderate for me) usage:
83m talk
9h 17m idle
11h 11m bluetooth
Before installing Juice Defender, I'd probably be at 20% right now. The only disadvantage to it is that the phone is a little slow to respond for the first few seconds upon wake-up (presumably while the CPU ramps up).
Overall, I'm very happy with the results. I just thought I'd pass them along.
Dave
Can you change settings to adjust for that CPU lag on startup/unlock? I know you can with SetCPU.
Also, how exactly does JD trade off without the always-on data? Can you set it to poll every x minutes or something? The biggest problem with turning off the always-on data is you lose Gmail push and similar notifications.
Eh, I got much worse battery life when using it. Total waste of money, IMO.

It seems like a lot of the settings are configurable in "Ultimate Juice," which is the one you have to pay for. I'm using the free "Juice Defender" and very little if configurable. It shuts data off when you turn off the screen, and turns it on for one minute every 15 minutes, to sync stuff. Not a bad compromise, in my opinion.

I paid for the Ultimate Juice version so I could actually customize my setup the way I wanted it.
My standby time has been ridiculous since getting it. I have not noticed any improvement during use though.

Agreed. The standby time is the only improvement for me, too. However, standby time is probably 75% of the day for me, most days.

I have heard good things about juice defender, but i have a basic question. It says it turns of data during times, or when certain apps are running, etc...
Now, is the data only internet connection? Or will it interfere with my ability to get texts as well, because that would be a deal break for me.
Data is only the internet. The only things that you'll be missing out on are e-mails, which will still come through based on your schedule set up and when you have your screen on.

Heard so much about this app, tried it and took me only a few hours to remove it. When screen is off, it kills data, so basically apps like K-9 Mail that push my IMAP-idle email accounts and poll other accounts are basically impotent.
Plus the interface is confusing with a myriad of settings and no real hold on what settings stick or what not to set. I understand the concept of the app but it's not for me. With stock rom and mediahub-DRM-whatever-process killed off manually, i get by a work day with 50% left over on the train/bus-ride home, more than enough to do stuff before i get home.
I dave been using juicedefender for 3 weeks and it has maximized my batt an overall of 1.4x. The interface is confusing for those that don't spend time and learn it....its granular.

U can set it to fcetch data on certain time intervals and u can get emails like that
Sent from my Epic 4G
I'm totally happy with it - I'm getting a rating of around 1.7x to 1.9x I know I can easily go a full day on one charge. The default setting of enabling data every 15 minutes is enough for me - I don't expect to get emails that are time sensitive to the point where a maximum of 15 minute delay would be detrimental. And I play with my phone a lot so I'm usually waking it up to respond to texts and it reenables data then anyway.
edit: I'm not using any battery tweaks or DRM disabling stuff. I'm stock except for rooting.
You guys and this juice defender. you use more battery with this because it is always running in the background. i get 45 hours without juice defender or a task killer. 1 day of battery pleasssseee i could get 2 if it was left in standby or more. no drm removed. root, cwm, galaxy rom and kernel di18 & blue minimalism
Oh well f me... If you're getting 45 hours that must mean I can get 45 hours because, you know, our geographic locations have the exact same coverage and we have the exact same phone usage patterns. Wow I feel like such an idiot. Thank you. Thank you for showing me that juice defender, instead of increasing my battery life by a good 6-8 hours, is actually killing it by 21 hours...

That's fine - always be skeptical especially when an update comes out to improve performance. I'm about to test the new kernel without this to see if it's worth it. But I know that keeping data off on my Hero tripled the battery life and since having this phone it's definitely increased it. But you can't tell me that I'm losing 21 hours of battery life by using it - and definitely don't try to make me feel like an idiot for using it either.

Im sure its not killing you by 21 hours. prolly your STOCK sync settings though. i only turn it on for a minute or two 3x a day. but go with out it i bet its prolly like 8 hours. think about it when your screen is off it is running. well that is another process that is draining battery unneccessarily. My entire phone is set up like on demand it does what i want it to when i want it to not when it wants too and all of this is acheived with stock settings and checking every app for update frequency settings. I use my phone a lot so i need it to be there.

So for argument's sake, and because I wanted an actual test, I installed your setup based on you're post earlier, andromeda rom, no juice, etc. gmail and facebook sync off. I even went in 4 times throughout the day to turn off running services. I got 11 hours and that was with charging while I was in a vehicle. So I would say about 9 to 10 hours really. TWS was only at 16%. Display was the biggest battery drain at 82%.
So now that I've done this, I can say without a doubt, for me personally, juice defender is really extending my battery life. While running juice defender, I take my phone off the charger at 6am typically and when I go to bed at midnight I still have over 20%. And if I don't plug my phone in, I can wake up at 6am the next day and the phone is still on.
You have a setup that works for you, and I have a setup that works for me. In my setup, juice defender gets me through a 24 hour period without charging. Now that I've got the andromeda rom and kernel, I'm going to test battery life with juice.

45 hours is meaningless when you just let the phone sit in standby the entire time. That's like the car commercials that list higher mpg than they get in the real world.

I have juice defender installed only for it's two toggle widgets. With defender disabled it doesn't run in background, I take advantage of the data toggle widget and I've seen it save as high as 5x's life.
I just switched from the G2, and I don't seem to be getting as good of a battery life. I just went down from 50 percent to 4 percent in 3 hours. Is this normal?
I don't think my phone is sleeping when the screen off. I'm kind of new to android, so excuse me asking, but how do you check if you phone is not sleeping and draining battery while idle? Is there an application or something to check?
One more thing, I just got the new update yesterday. I heard that it's not good to use a task killer, but I'm now using the built in task manager to close apps before I lock my phone seems to be helping with battery life. What are you opinions on this?
Check the battery thread, life seems to vary along among the Vibrants. A lot are reporting 11-15 hours of use before needing a charge.
I read that it's good to put Wifi on never sleep (if you're on Wifi) and use a black wallpaper

If you change WiFi to never sleep, it eats battery like crazy (at least for me, I'm bought with no data, and could barely last a day from when I woke up to going to sleep). With WiFi art to never sleep when charging, I only drain around 40% in an awake day (from when wake up to going to sleep).
Also, when I set WiFi to never sleep, my cell standby usage skyrockets.

Extend battery life
Couple of things I have noticed with this phone
1. Get an app Task manager or similar type apps. There are a bunch of them in the store and here. This will allow you at one click to see what is on in programs and better manage that.
2. Go to the Development section here and read the Bionix 1.9 Thread. It explains how to recondition the battery. Even if your battery is new it is good information understanding how the phone views the battery.
3. If I am out of range or do not need, I stop the wifi and bluetooth. In the menu you can set the settings alot of ways, so you just have to experiment on this. (In home screen, hit lower left button and go to settings)
4. I use my email and phone ALL day (min 10hrs) and typically, I get 15-17 hr of use before it hits 10%
5. Finally, once you are comfortable with the phone, you can load a custom ROM from the Development section. The developers here are very through and Do squeeze the most out of the phone.
Good luck and you will love the phone as I do.

1 - terrible advice - esp with JI6 having one built in (long press home).
2 - This is also in the General sticky
5 - try bionix 1.9.0 (or 1 if you want alt lock screens) and try JACs oc/uv - great battery life so far.
On average use I get close to 24 hours out of a charge using mostly WiFi and enabling no-sleep option, running Bionix 1.9.1 with stock kernel with JI6 modem. I'm also running LauncherPro Plus with facebook widget set to auto-refresh every 5 minutes, the most frequent setting for Google sync, and NoLED notification. I think that is very reasonable.
p.s. I do not use task manager since the operating system is supposed to manage the apps on its own.

I use an app from the market called Y5 (free) to automatically shut down wifi if I'm in an area without it and back on if I'm in an area with it.
Works well for me.
My vibrant is less 23% after being off the charger for 4 hrs. One of those hours was me driving without using it.
Something is wrong. Dunno if it's the update, but something is lilling it FAST - wifi ang gps off the entire time...

I use the living hell out of my Vibrant, and usually it lasts for about 4-5 hours. This being during playing games with brightness maxed, or streaming music over 3G and/or Wi-fi.
If I have a day where I am not doing the above, and just using my phone for emial and the facebook and gmail synching, I easily get over 10 hours before I hit 20%.
All in all I am quite happy with it's battery life. I have just learned to leave my phone on the charger till full charge after streaming music drains it to <20%.
I really should put MP3's on it and test how much that drains the battery compared to streaming.
Either way, I get better performance on battery and memory management then my old (work supplied) BB Bold.
My G2 definitely has more battery life than my Vibrant. That said, once you apply the above mentioned tweaks and especially with JAC's OC/UV kernel, and setcpu set at 200-1000 at conservative, the Vibrant battery life improves quite a bit. Still, its not as good as my G2. But not that bad either..
Keep in mind that the G2 doesn't have to power a billboard sized SAMOLED screen either.
Other than that flash on of Sombionix's ROMs with either of the new kernels and then recondition.
I get pretty good battery life because I don't have 3G in my area so I keep it forced to edge and I don't use bluetooth ever and wifi stays off unless i need it.

Fully charged on the way to work. On the charger less than 4 hours later with moderate use. No better after update. Was using a task killer with minimal improvement. Love the Vibrant but despise it's battery life.

People, recondition the battery. It's easy.
Charge it to 100%, keep it plugged in and reboot to recovery, clear the battery stats, drain it all the way, then charge it back to 100% again.
You can start in the morning before work/school and finish at the end of the day. I've never had an issue with battery life on this phone. I can play 6 continuous hours of video/games on this thing and still have battery left.

Main negative for me was delay in messages in Google talk coming through when you start switching the phone's connection off and on. I'm a heavy Google talk user, its the main way I keep in touch with my girlfriend when I'm away, so it just wasn't working for me.
On top of that, I didn't see any major battery life improvements. For me, the major dictator of battery life has been hands on, screen on time with the phone. I usually get 4-5 hours display on time from a charge, and juice defender didn't seem to make any huge impact on this.

Juicedefender (JD) doesn't improve online screen time. It works by intelligently switching off the phone's radios (data, wifi).
My phone is in my pocket right now, switched off, with all radios off, and the battery is running down much more slowly than it would otherwise. JD occasionally switches on one of the radios to get tweets, e-mails, FB updates etc. But when I switch on the screen, it permanently enables one of the radios so that I can actually use the thing.
But, sure, JD doesn't improve the total online screen time. It can't. Nor can any other piece of software. The alternative is let the battery run down constantly. And I have never came across a phone that depletes its battery so fast when it is switched off.
1 day and 18 hours - Last unplugged.
I lost 71% of my battery.
In this 71% percent
'Inactive' used 25.56% (I always shut my phone off when I go to sleep so I won't be spammed/mailed/whatsapped or something.
Screen used: 17.25%
Standby: 14.91%
Media: 6.39%
android: 2.84
ping 2.13
mail 1.42/
This all makes the 71%.
I am confused since I used my mail about half-1 hour a day. I listen to music for 2 hours, I played Angry birds for about 10 minutes and the web for about 15-30 minutes.
But I don't mind I (L) the batterylife. Someday's I call for hours but when I use it hardcore (2-3 hours of calling, 1 hour web, 1-2 hours mail, 30minutes of messages etc) my battery should go for about 30 hours.

I realise it doesn't improve phone usage time, but that's my point. Phone usage time is the biggest dictator of battery life. A heavy user is still going to chew the battery in well less than a day.
I also don't think the phone uses much battery when not in use. If you don't use the phone it will last for days with juice defender or without....but most people charge every night so its a non issue.

I think that we have established that there are two types of Desire HD in current use. The one that is actually available to purchase, which runs down in 4-5 hours of online screen time, and the magic one that is available from La La Land, which runs for 17 days and can be used to power entire cities.

I am on official 1.72 rom, and phone is holding with easy usage 2 days = on whole night, never swich off, only bluetooth, gps and wifi on when I need, not good 3g here, then is on only gsm, when I leave everything on = wifi, bluetooth, gps, (+ playing tank hero, stupid zombies and x construction ) gsm only and screen on 25 % hold for 20 - 22 hours, only what I use is android assistant by Aaron, and I am very happy with it. If is phones battery going down quickly can be faulty rom, with touch hd I tried a lot roms and few killed battery in 2 - 3 hours...
I think that Juice defender is alright. But most of the stuff you can do manually (turning screen brightness down, turning wifi off), it just merges it all into one place. I'm still looking for the best way to conserve my phone's battery. As I get 1 day out of it with normal use and 2 days with minimal use
If you know how to calibrate battery, it's way more beneficial than Juice Defender. There's a tutorial floating in the Dev section i think.
Hi All
Once again thanks for watching my video and getting me tickets to MWC...but alas i have another issue. My Note has horrific battery life....practically about 8 hours.
I downloaded better battery stats and there are no major wakelocks going on...(just juice defender at 3.4% which i uninstalled anyway) ....any other ideas?
Any help would be appreciated, another Mobiler suggested i put a custom rom on...I'm just terrified of 'bricking' my phone lol
This is perfectly average battery life for stock rom with moderate to heavy usage but if on light usage you might have some issues. Here is my battery like with heavy use.
Don't pay attention to people claiming Days of battery life they are simply not using the phone.

Maybe you could post up your betterybatterystats results?
I was having the same problem. I have a lot of apps on my phone, and it was just draining while sleeping as far as I could see. My main issue was all the unwanted apps like the social and media hub popping up whenever they felt like chomping on my battery.
I finally gave in and rooted, and installed droidwall to prevent anything getting network access I do not allow, android assistant for its start up manager, and autorun to delete all 'event listeners' that cause apps to pop up when they like (and there are hundreds of these in the stock apps, I assure you).
I now have 50% more battery life, and it seems to lose a lot less while sleeping.
I installed the CPU speed set thingy (sorry, I forget the name) but I had the problem a few others seem to have because it drained the battery faster than ever while sleeping. I will try again after a few days. I screenshot the battery graph in full screen, showing the WiFi, wake & screen, every day so that I can get a good feel for historical usage and battery life.
I have an el cheapo battery (had two but lost one) for emergencies. I am buying a Samsung one instead (for a 'real' 2500 mAh), and expect to keep it on me at all times. That should take me through a day of pretty heavy usage. I also have some dangly 'add-on' chargers, but frankly a spare battery is neater, smaller and easier.
I have also bout a tablet (10.2" with 16GB) for $200. I fully expect to buy another - one for work and one for home. These will reduce my usage of the G-Note and leave it for actual use as a phone. The main problem is that I use it so damned much! I have my phone, contacts, all my To Do lists, email, audible books, textual books, surfing, games, etc all on one device. I also use it to type notes at meetings or the like using my folding BT keyboard. It does it all really well, but does not have the battery to cope!
I know there are fat batteries out there, but I do not want to spoil the beauty of my svelte Note by giving it a hunch-back!

I also use Llama to control things like BT, WiFi and network data access when away from home or office. It does help, and means I don't have to remember to toggle. I tried Juice Defender as well, but its idea of turning on the WiFi at intervals saved my battery but seemed to make my email (IMAP) never download. I need to know when emails come in so that did not work for me. I may try it again at some point and try to make it work better for me.
Uninstall Juice Defender. I found my phone battery lasted twice longer after I removed it.

I use my phone for note taking all day and into the evening! Screen and internet used for over 12 hours, constant use! (Screen on lowest setting)
After battery "settled" I get around 10 hours then pop in a second battery!
Took about 15 charging cycles though to get the 10 hours!
Anyway just saying it may take time! And a second battery is always safest

that's... actually pretty normal battery usage if you're using your phone a lot.
my note is operating pretty much 18hours a day. A full charge is all i need, and by the end of the day, i get the critical battery notification.
if your note lasted more than a day, that's great. But with the amount of workload i am expending using my note, i wouldn't be surprised if continued usage of the phone would only last 7 to 8 hours tops. or much less.
and besides, the note can last for more than 2 days, if you didn't use it at all.
thanks for all the suggestions...i'm going to give rooting it a go this evening. Will let you know how that goes.

This is perfectly average battery life for stock rom with moderate to heavy usage but if on light usage you might have some issues. Here is my battery like with heavy use.
Don't pay attention to people claiming Days of battery life they are simply not using the phone.

Yeap, that seems like average battery life. If you notice (others) that his screen on time was pretty solid most of the time. That means of the nearly 6 hours on, I'd say about 4.x hours the screen was on. So that's good
I have managed to improve my Galaxy note battery life a LOT by doing the following:
- Disable Wi-Fi when not using it.
- Settings > Accounts and Sync > UN-TICK "Auto-sync".
With auto-sync disabled you have to manually open the relevent app to get the data, but for me, thats what I prefer, and it saves loads of battery life.
Used to be 8 hours or less with the above 2 enabled.
now 16 hours+ with the above 2 disabled !
Installed free version of Juice Defender 3 days ago, didn't do anything just keeping it on balanced mod and from now on I have extended normal battery life (phone, e-mails, sms, occasional internet through 3G) from 1 day to 2 days. What can I say ...
It works. When you switch into wifi, gaming or intensive document editing then nothing is going to save you, but just for having the phone in your pocket and using it as a "phone" Juice Defender delivers.
I noticed on the market that roughly half people say it is excellent and the other half is whining that it just sucks. Give it a try a decide for yourself.
Just turn auto sync off and untick "Use wireless networks" and you will be blown away by the battery life.
The last two days my battery was losing power too quickly compared to my previous weeks with my note.
So I thought it must be an app which I installed which is causing this. The only app I installed recently was Google + so it took it off and hey presto - battery life back to normal again.
You might say well it doesn't drain my battery with google+ installed but it works with mine as I tried re-installing again and it sapped the battery again.
Maybe different apps effect different roms, kernals etc...just a thought and something you could try with a recently installed app.

I can see that as an option, and I believe that all of those who report great battery life are doing much the same. My problem is that I want to be kept alerted to emails. I have tried Juice Defender, as it starts up wireless at defined intervals, but since my email is checking at other defined intervals, at appears that the email never gets through. I have to assume they never coincide.
I also like certain apps to sync, although I guess I could do that manually. Currently I turn on autosync while at home or work with Llama. Luckily the wireless and autosync toggles are in the notification dropdown as well - that is a wonderful idea.
I use the Note far too much, so (as I have probably said) I am getting a tablet. I hope that it will serve as my email notification when I am at home or work. When Llama knows I am at neither place, it can disable autosync and enable mobile data for me (which I keep off at home & work).
It is a delicate balance trying to get full desired operation and decent battery life. I am not sure it is really worth all the agro. I may just settle for a spare battery in my wallet and a dock/battery charger by my bedside. That is probably the easiest of all options! Then I can game away whenever I like without constantly checking the battery
Im using a custom rom rocket rom v21 with abyss kernel... which gives me a battery for 40 hours approx. With fair amount of usage. Sync off facebook app as it sucks a lot of battery too.

In wifi settings enable the option to turn wifi of if the screen is off. That adds a lot of battery time. I get far more than 8 hours and i use it all the time with wifi etc.

Awesome! Been looking for this feature for awhile now. Only downfall is just remembering to switch it back when i'm using Pandora
A bit off topic but I experienced a fluke on my battery life, was just watching simpsons while I had my wifi connected and only had my yahoo messenger connected probably a total of 10-15 messages in 4hrs range, for 4 hours of screen time it normally drains 50-51% only.
I almost always have the same scenario when I watch simpsons on my phone, yahoo messenger running but it the first time to drain it like this.
