I have read all the complaint on Atrix - Atrix 4G General

hmm, come on guys, this is the 3rd day after Atrix released.
I think most of us complain about the software on the Atrix, so we can't help it unless Moto really care about their customers and kindly unlock the BL and maybe OTA 2.3. ( There is a huge discussion at MOTO official Atrix forum about the BL)
a few ppl don't like the LCD screen quality, and I know, we are spoiled by AMOLED, and I am still attracted by Inspire LCD when I was at ATT store, but I don't read my phone Screen that much, i don't even watch Moive, play games on it, so its not a big issue coz I have a iPad.
I guess the only hope is we expect moto open the BL like they did on Xoom and Driod.

I would say about 80 percent of Atrix users I have spoke to are unhappy with there purchase. With mumblings of shoddy software and no real time speed increases, its fair to assume this device is a bit of a fail. Just go over to the marketplace and see the large second hand market for Atrix's, after just one month on sale.
So glad I have my Nexus S
The Atrix I fear is one of the nails in motorola's coffin.

lol.. any chance you read the benchmark comparisons between LG Optimus 2X vs. Atrix? not that benchmarks mean anything but it was interesting to see the difference between those two phones.
Next up versus the Nexus S. T-Mobile G2x, it actually seems like a good competitor on paper. Since its reportedly supposed to be running on stock Android. But I'll most likely wait until a quad-core Nexus phone comes out since Quad cores are rumored to be done by later this year.

These devices I feel are making a bad name for android. People who got the atrix as their first android phone, would probably think that android is laggy even with dual core processor. I wish Google would have went the 'apple route' and control both hardware and software instead of letting these manufacturers put crap on android.

Quad core hummingbird and snapdragon's would be class, but as with everything we will have to wait for the software to catch up with the hardware
Motorola really make some crap phones though, and the crapness emanates from Motoblur, it basically makes apps incompatible,

Android is Open Source, they couldn't reinforce those ideas if they wanted to because Android from the very beginning was established to be opened to any company.
And honestly, too many of you are thinking as a enthusiastic user. Why exactly do you think these manufacturers don't care so much about upgrading their phones to the latest Android version? The average user is the large % of their sales. The average user doesn't look at Android the way we do. They don't even know about Froyo or Gingerbread. They just use a phone as a phone.
Nexus S is definitely a great device. And I'm not looking back. From this point onward (since Nexus S), I decided that I'm only getting Nexus based devices. Anything other than that, I'm not interested.

I happen to have an Atrix and Nexus S in front of me right now... been testing them together for a few days. The Nexus S has been my main daily driver and the Atrix just accompanies to see how well it stacks up. Bottom line... the Atrix is going back, nexus S staying for a while longer for now.
It's just another classical case of good hardware, horrible software implementation, similar to how Nokia was going with S60. Nothing is optimized for the dual core, the Nexus S is faster at almost every task, even flash playback in the browser which is surprising, because the hummingbird chipsets are known to suck at browsing compared to snapdragons. Also, the Atrix has a terrible case of color banding... if you thought the SAMOLEDs were bad, the Atrix just doesn't use its 24bit panel at all. Again, poor software. The camera is much better, and the battery is significantly better, but all the software and bloatware just takes away from the experience so much.
If you have anything you guys want me to compare between the two let me know before I return it =)

Only Google phone's for me too from now on. And I don't think I could consider another HTC phone without AMOLED as minimum screen spec... This is why samsung have a hold of the market, the screens are fantastic

correction: Super AMOLED i wonder what Super AMOLED Plus looks like, but yeah i totally agree about Samsung. I don't get whats the hatred towards Samsung, they have no control over the Nexus S.
Sure, people criticize about the plastic back. I wish it was aluminium myself, but believe me. This phone is not CHEAPLY made at all, it's solidly constructed.
There's no such thing as a perfect phone. But the Nexus S is pretty damn close to perfect. If it had 720p and SD card, it'd be perfect without question. 4G on top of that, it's a dream phone. But I don't really care about 4G

No its a hardware limitation. It could get hacked by CyanogenMod team and 720p could be added but it wouldn't be "true" 720p if you know what I mean.

Torn between these two phones, was going to pick up an Atrix the other day but then found out Nexus S is coming to all Canadian carriers according to Samsung.
Love the Nexus but really hate the fact it's only 16GB with no SD card. If it was 32GB I could handle it. Missing 720p sucks too.
How likely is it that Motorola would either fix Motoblur or ditch it when they release the Atrix Gingerbread update this year? or at least unlock the bootloader so you can run a stock version of Gingerbread if you choose?
If I was confident that I could run stock versions of Android on the Atrix, my decision would be easy.

Well that's pretty easy to answer. The probability of that happening is zero. Motorola locks the bootloader on all their phones and it's up to people here to hack it. It only really slows them down, but still it's annoying. Also, gingerbread will be a while away I'm guessing, let alone Ice Cream.
Just look at the entire history of Motorola android phones and see which ones actually have an AOSP ROM out (cyanogen)... the answer is only one, the original Droid/Milestone from 2009. If you want customization, HTC and Samsung phones seem to get more ROMs. You may think that Motorola doesn't want custom ROMs because they polish their blur UI but it's quite the opposite with my Atrix experience. Everything, I mean virtually EVERYTHING is half-assed on the phone. Terrible color banding, random reboots, tons and tons of bloatware that conflict with each other and drain the battery (which is why you see battery complaints despite having a 1930mah battery).

Don't get me wrong, the Atrix is still a great phone. If you're stuck between an iPhone, Atrix, or Nexus S, no matter what you'll end up with a powerful phone. I have no doubt the Atrix will be a smooth machine in the hands of an experienced Android user who knows what apps to freeze, etc., but there are some things that just can't be fixed until Motorola decides to fix them for us such as the color banding, capped upload speeds, multitouch bugs, etc. Yea it has a Tegra 2, but the GPU is actually not even better than the Nexus S/Galaxy S GPU. I've played a bunch of Tegra games and they don't look any better than games that are on the iPhone (which has a slower GPU than the Nexus S). Sure, Tegra zone will help the gaming market pick up for android by enforcing a standard, but it's still a crappy standard for coming out a year later.

over all. the new problems with atrix makes it abit of fail device now in my eyes
- Locked bootloader. and it doesnt seem its going to be unlocked anytime soon. even the new HTC is locked. i believe from now on all the phones will be locked. which makes the Nexus Line is the only available option for the people like us who like to tweak his phone. whatever optimus 2x or galaxy S2 or Evo 3d will be unlocked is different story. but for now. the best safe bet go with Nexus line.
- only 2 fingers for multi touch + it stops working after you holding it for 12 seconds. like say you are playing racing games, and you are pressing the screen to throttle, while the other finger to move your car, after 12 seconds both touches will stop responding and the screen will act fuzzy for like 4 to 5 seconds before it gets its act together. whatever that is hardware problem or software problem. its a total fail for gaming on that device no matter how powerful its.
and even if its a software issue, knowing motorolla. atrix owners will be glad if they get it fixed by the end of the year. + locked bootloader so devs to try and fix it them selves is out of the window. makes the atrix a complete fail in my eyes.
- the screen is ****. i am sorry but if i can see pixels on both screens. why would i go with less colors ? sure the pixels density are more in atrix. but i still see the pixels. and the colors are not nice as SA. why would i go back step ?
honestly. between atrix and Nexus S. the Nexus S wins hands down. and this coming from an iphone owner who used atrix for couple of days and use the nexus S almost every day since its with my young brother
but i dont agree that this is a nail in the coffin for motorolla. this company is so huge to be effected by couple of flips of phones. and even then. the moto sold very well. the hype alone sold the phone. sure many didnt like it. but for moto, they sold good enough so thats not a flop for them.

actually, there is a more " easy " reason why they decided to lock it down.
they really dont want people to keep their phone. they want people to change at least once a year. which is why they are offering more than 1 device per year.
if you have unlocked bootloader. then you will update your software without needing HTC or Samsung or any other company for that matters. and it will prevent a possible future sale of their new offering. its a business move.
which is why i like apple in this regard. 1 phone per year. smart move. keep the customers loyal to you. dont screw them up by releasing a newer better device than yours every 3 months or 4.
there is a reason why apple is leading. too bad all other companies are that stupid :/
as for the andriod, i think from now on all companies will use a locked bootloader. locked karnel. the only way to go is the nexus line i assume if you are looking for open Dev mobile. and i highly doubt Samsung or LG will let their new high end phones like optimus 2x, optimus 3G or galaxy S2 to be without a signed bootloader.

I picked up an unlocked Atrix from Bell Canada (while I was there skiing) last week and put a long side my Nexus S, I actually prefer the Atrix - and I'll explain why.
I'm not one who cares about unlocking bootloaders. Not everyone wants to mod their phones. My Nexus S is still locked. BTW, the Atrix bootloader has been cracked (http://www.androidcentral.com/has-motorolas-bootloader-encryption-been-cracked) but you already knew that didnt you??
The Atrix is running Android 2.2 which accounts for a little lag and reduced dual core speed. Once it gets the latest version of Gingerbread - which has full multi CPU support, the phone will be a whole lot different. Having dual cores in the long run will at least keep the Atrix up there with the best for at least 6-7 months, as opposed to the Nexus S which is technically already outdated and old tech (actually it was already old tech 1-2 months prior to its release lol).
I actually like the screen on the Atrix and I rate it better than the Nexus S SAMOLED - especially outside. Sure the SAMOLED has deep blacks and rich colours, but I still cant see the ****er in direct sunlight. For me, this is a complete fail.
The finger print scanner is unique and reliable. Its good to know that my phone is locked down, especially if it is stolen or I loose it.
The build quality on mine is superb. I can't fault it to be honest.
The Atrix has gorilla glass (thank God), as opposed to a rubbish glass screen with a pathetic oleophobic coating that rubs off after 2 weeks of use (I'm on my 3rd Nexus S because of this **** BTW - and the screen scratches so easily even when its in my empty jeans pocket..... )

The only advantages of having the Nexus S is that it will get the latest Android updates and you unlock the bootloader to flash what ever rom/kernel (whatever) you want...

I'm not here to bash the Nexus S, just sharing my opinions. I just wish Google stuck with HTC for the Nexus S, rather than going cheap with Samsung. HTC make a far better quality handset for sure. The plasticky build of the Nexus S is a real let down.
I also think Motorola has turned over a new leaf with the Atrix. They've gone in all guns blazing with a laptop dock and loads of accessories like HDMI desktop docks, etc as well. I do not think they intend to let this handset die off into the sunset without software updates. If they did this with the Atrix, they will kill themselves just like Sony Ericsson did with the X10 line. I will never ever ever ever never ever touch another Sony Ericsson handset for the rest of my life.

i am buying the new Xperia play. i need that phone in my life for gaming. i am also very intrested in the arc. its sexy as hell with a bravia engine for the screen. i am impressed

here's the part that i don't get. Yes it's annoying that moto is so locked down, but it's not like it was any surprise to anyone. They have a history of it, a well known history. They've been working on the droid X since it came out, with about no success, and yet everyone that bought the atrix is screaming about how it should be broken. My question is, if you really wanted a hackable phone, why did you choose this one? You could have gone with something else, even if that meant waiting for other phones to come to AT&T. i believe at&t is launching something like 22+ phones this year?

I think that some people bought the phone because Motorola said that they would provide a solution that allowed developers to access the phone (these people are the "Good Faith" purchasers). I believe that Motorola said it first on their YouTube account (after the Motorola employee responsible for replying to comments there said basically what you said above but with fewer words and in a rather rude tone) and then again on their support forums where they said that they hoped to have a solution in place before the 30-day AT&T return policy expired. Motorola may also have said something similar on their Facebook page but I'm not sure.
Other people bought the phone because they didn't understand that Motorola's encrypted bootloaders have never been broken. They are the ones that say stuff like "everything's hackable", which may actually be true but is meaningless in reality unless you also include a timeframe and I don't think that most people want to wait ten trillion years for a brute force crack of a bootloader.
I, on the other hand, decided to wait and see what Motorola would do before making a purchase and so far it's not looking good but I am still hopeful.

I guess I should add another group of people: Those who didn't understand that getting root was not the same as cracking the bootloader but heard that devs had root even before the phone was released.

this . exactly this. when Moto said they will give some access to devs. i thought they are going the HTC way and not Sony way.
now HTC went Moto Way and Sony went the HTC way.
i mean, how stupid can these companies be ? seriously ? sony released the Xperia X10. a beauitiful device and early in UK. people didnt buy it because it was locked. Sony learned from their mistake. new phones? open for you to play with.
HTC ? thery were doing fine. alot of sales. nice devices. they saw Sony failing because of their locked ****. they saw Motorolla devices are not selling very high after they locked them down " thus, sales of new the devices is much less than the droid 1 " as far as i know " i dont have data "

i did. my only concern is about the screen brightness, from the videos i have seen its fine. i know its not a powerful device like tegra 2. but i am in for the gaming since i am gamer " speaking of which. i know its OT but how is the 3DS ? pass till NGP ?"
i think PS emulator and N64/SNES/GEn Emulators will be amazing on this phone and i will be finally able to have all the old classics on one system + whatever new games comes out will be fine as well.
looking at tegra zone specific games, i dont have much hope to get alot of games on it. and that difference in the games isnt even big at all.
plus the phone looks sexy as hell with its curves. and the screen is really pretty. i know its an LCD but for some reason sony screens look much better than a normal LCD screen, " and if the xperia play is SLCD, then i am happy panda "

i think PS emulator and N64/SNES/GEn Emulators will be amazing on this phone and i will be finally able to have all the old classics on one system + whatever new games comes out will be fine as well.
looking at tegra zone specific games, i dont have much hope to get alot of games on it. and that difference in the games isnt even big at all.

I'd wait for the NGP, mostly because of a personal distaste for the screen tech of the 3DS.
As for the Play, I'd be concerned about a lot more than just the dim display. Battery life, an outdated processor, and RAM specs that aren't even really in line with last-gen tech all make it seem like one would be better off buying a more future-ready phone that's compatible with the Android Playstation games. Especially if bought on contract -- in 2 years the Play will be 4 years outdated. I was really looking forward to a solid gaming phone, but this just doesn't seem to be it. Now by no means am I saying the Atrix is the better gaming alternative...only that the Play has some seemingly unsurpassable issues that dedicated gaming controls can't make up for. Then again...until the phone actually comes out, who knows?

the last thing i care about is ram. atrix had 1 gig ram and only 170 was free for me only most of the time. as long as its running efficient, then i could care less.
the gpu is not out dated. its same as desire hd. decent. in line with the galaxy S and nexus S. not top of the line tho like the atrix i admit.

Now that Sony Ericsson has taken a leap forward which really is a surprise considering that they have taken a tough stance on unlocking anything. This would put more pressure to Motorola if they need to get a bigger piece of the pie. For sure Motorola is surprised that Sony Ericsson took a different path.
After all, it does make sense that if you have a great piece of hardware and you let the community take a hold of it, word will spread and more consumers will take a note and purchase it.
Guaranteed that ATnT is probably disappointed with some consumers returning their Atrix. I also doubt Bell Canada is breaking open the champagne here when across the store there are more ppl lining up for the iPAD2 than for the Atrix.
The ball is in Motorola's court. Time for them to make a move and less replying on facebook.

Motorola Photon?

This isnt the forum for this but this is where most of the sprint users go (and the evo forum)
I've seen all the topics about evo3d vs the GS2 but nothing on the motorola photon.
the specs are on the internet, but I'm not exactly sure how those specs would stack up to the GS2 or the evo3d.
I work right next to the motorola building in Ft. Lauderdale and I was able to talk to some of the people working on the phone and even use one of theres for a second.
It was running gingerbread with motoblur (although this version of motoblur looked really nice, and they told me it can be turned off.
They also told me that it will have a locked bootloader
They said they were told it was going to release by july 31st.
The phone felt very solid in my hand had some weight to it kinda like an iphone.
I manage a restaurant so i kind of overheard them talking about stuff like getting stuff through fcc and all sorts of debugging that had to do with problems popping back up on them. It was just very interesting to hear because it sounded like talk from these forums.
I wish i would have got a picture because I cant seem to find anything online thats not stock picture of the device.
What does everyone think? Will it be a good upgrade from the epic?

The Photon is not an upgrade from the Epic in any conceivable way. It has a lesser quality LCD display, weaker processor, locked bootloader (enjoy the stock rom and slight variants because that's all they get) and motorola's poor customer support.

I wouldn't be so unequivocal...
The Photon has a dual core processor, the Epic has a single core, plus it has a larger, and higher resolution display from the Epic. The guy who reviewed it from Phonescoop said the screen on the Photon is excellent, particularly compared to other motos. It also has the webtop software. As for the bootloader, Sprint will have to decide whether to let Motorola unlock it later in the year. If the bootloader does get unlocked then I personally would definitely consider it an upgrade from the Epic.
To the OP: it sounds like they are having issues with the FCC approval. That's not unusual. It's what held up the EVO 3D's release for a while too.

Had Sprint not f'd us over with the Premier program changes back in April, I'd be jumping from the Epic to the Photon on august 1st once my upgrade window opens. But no, no more yearly upgrade for one line, just 1/2 discount.

Looks like it is missing the keyboard too. Downgrade from the Epic.

No keyboard = not for me, but I saw the unboxing video online and it looked pretty solid. A friend of mine has a droid 3 on vzw, and if its ant indication of average moto ****, I like it. I do wanna see how they handle the unlocking of the bootloader.

I've been playing with it for the past couple of days, and I gotta say it's a really solid device. The webtop app is amazing, and I've been considering this phone just for that reason. All the different boot up options intrigue me as I don't know what they do. I'm not the biggest fan of the display as it's a pentile lcd, and I'm one of those people who can see the miniscule dots every time I look at it a certain way.
Also, I'm pretty confident moto will unlock it in time. I don't think OEMs can afford to alienate the dev community any longer.
Id say it has HUGE development potential, but sadly I don't think many devs will buy it. One of the main reasons I'm holding out for the within.
Which I hope, I hope, I hope, please god, give it a bigger dev community than the epic. I just might cry if it's left in the dust again by htc's inferior hardware.

Great devs in here no less , this was first (and last Motorola device) , was usually sticking with Samsung , but I dont like the idea of the Dev phones or the gpe phones ,so I bought a OnePlus One ! The OPO rocks in every category and I am not a slave the carriers and there bs (i have straight talk anyway) , but unlocked is the only way to go!!!
Ill be cleaning out my moto x and [probably selling on craigslist )

Cya! I bought a Droid Maxx after playing around with the wife's Moto X. I was looking at everything from LG G3 to iPhone 6 but none had Active Display and Touchless Control. Her Moto X was unlocked using Sunshine, mine is still locked but I'm running 4.4 so I can unlock anytime I want. For me, functionality trumps benchmarks. The Moto X's battery life is impressive, she doesn't charge her phone for days at a time. I'm a much heavier user and my Maxx has plenty of juice left at the end of the day. Motorola has impressed me a lot under the ownership of Google. The Assist software is also very cool. The new Moto X and Maxx/ Turbo looks great but I need an unlocked boot loader and I don't know when that will happen on the new machines. Hence, I scratched the new Moto X off my shopping list. Also read that the battery life is laughable, even though it is still decent when strictly on LTE and is actually a little better than the 2013 Moto X.

Enjoy your new phone. However, imagine if everyone made a thread like this after they changed phones? It would be swamped with these threads burying useful information.

All Moto X Owners Please Read

Hello, i just wanted bring all of you together to read this thread. Ok so i know since you've been a Moto owner, you've heard or seen at least once insulting comment about your device or the Motorola company. For example, "Anything that Motorola makes sucks" "People only get them because they're cheap" "That phone is crappy". I know that those people are ignorant to other people's liking. I'm tired of hearing the same thing. A lot of people that own super expensive high end- flashy smartphones say things like that about devices like the Moto series. Well that really offends me, just because they might not be the most high-end smartphones or the most expensive smartphones doesn't mean they are worthless. We Moto owners take great pride in our device, we appreciate what we have and we value our smartphones.
If someone offered me a brand new Galaxy S6 and a brand new Moto X and said i could only pick one. I would pick the Moto X hands down without a doubt in my mind. Because I know, We know what matters in a smartphone. What is that? User experience and performance for the price. That's what a review comes down to at the end of the day. A company could make a super spec'd out smartphone but get the same review score as a phone a fraction of its cost. I know if i were to buy a $1000 smartphone it better be great in every aspect and i know if i bought a smartphone for half that price, i'm not expecting it to be perfect but i want to have a good performance. That's exactly what motorola does, it gives you a great performing phone for the price.
For example, the Moto G. It has a low price point but does everything you need it to do. If I want a super powerful gaming machine of a smartphone, I'm not going to buy the Moto G. Then give a bad review for not being able to do what i wanted it to. I'm gonna buy a smartphone with a powerful chipset. At the end of the day we Moto owners stand out. Other people don't seem to understand our taste in smartphones value. Im not saying if you own a super expensive phone you're a bad person or anything. I'm just saying you get what you pay for. All of you Moto owners, good job in picking a smartphone. It doesn't matter if you have a Moto E, a Moto G or a Moto X. We all are equal and unified. #Teammoto

I have a Moto X 2013 and I had recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy S4. The S4 ran hotter, slower, and had screen issues. I ended up selling it for less than it cost for me to buy and repair the Galaxy S4. Custom rom support for the samsung galaxy S4 was amazing. I really look forward to seeing how the Moto X 2013 handles with lollipop.

Mods, please do everyone a favor and close this thread. While I truly appreciate someone trying to start something positive here about the Moto X, after the last couple of posts, I can see exactly where this thread is going and it's not a nice place. I'm all for people expressing their opinion but I think that it may be better for everyone that's on this forum to nip it in the bud. It's already starting to go downhill and this thread was started earlier today.
By the way, I do own a Moto X (2013) Developer Edition and think that it's a wonderful phone. The screen went black on the one that I owned all of a sudden a week and a half ago. I called Motorola and got a warranty replacement within one week. Thank goodness I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 that I could use as a backup but when I got my Moto X back, I realized the exact reason why I love the Motorola smartphones. Samsung Galaxy S3 drags when you compare it to the Moto X (2013) Developer Edition.
Glad to have my little speed demon back.
Coming from a proud Motorola Moto X owner.

Motorola is lame in case of updating moto x to lollipop while other phones are being updated as soon as new firmware is available.

That's odd. The only Android phones that I know of that get the updates as soon as the new firmware is available are the Nexus line of smartphones. All of the other ones, you do have to wait a little while before the update rolls out. You know, sometimes it is not the phone manufacturer's fault that the update is delayed. Sometimes it can be because of something on your wireless phone carrier's end. I know Verizon is famous for delaying the releases until all of their bloatware will work with the phone's update. I've experienced it on multiple phones with them (Samsung and Motorola) and that part is very frustrating. There is no need in throwing Motorola under the bus on this.

As you see for moto x didnt get the update yet but my s4 got it. M not criticising moto i love my moto x but they are slow in contrast to updates..

Well, that's just an anomaly. Normally, Samsung is slow as molasses about their updates. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 Wi-Fi model and it hasn't received the Lollipop update yet. My sister has the S5 and she got her Lollopop update fairly quickly but her phone doesn't work as well as my Moto X does now. Wonder if Samsung pushed it out too quickly and didn't get all of the bugs out. Some of my friends have the Samsung phones that got the Lollipop update and while it runs okay, they also have issues with this new update.
Something to ponder. Maybe we ought to be patient and wait for the parties involved to get all the little kinks worked out of this update before they roll it out to everyone.
