Beginner Android ROMs to SD - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi, I know a million threads on this site have been created. Possibly some that touch bases with my question, but I could not find anything exact.
Having taking a few computer science classes in school I feel like I should have a good amount of knowledge as to take part developing roms for the community, and I'd love to start by porting over a fresh stock 2.3.3 rom dumped from the Nexus One to load via MGLDR (maybe RAM later on). Could anybody point me in the right direction as to reading this .img files, maybe a good set of tools, and whatever else I could use? Thanks very much.
P.S. I want to do more than the ROM Kitchen, which seems like a very useful tool still--no offense.

Got a Herald/Tmo Wing... one quick question.

Where the hell do I start?
... Told you it was quick!
OK, seriously though... I do have some experience hacking/flashing/flexing phones, but all that traces back to my Motorola days. This is nowhere near the same thing, not by a long shot. So I was just wondering if anybody could give me some tips, perhaps point me in the right direction because I have no idea where to even begin.
Thanks a lot and I really appreciate any and all help provided.
*EDIT* I forgot to mention... I know I'm responsible for all my own actions. If I screw up, then I screwed up.
Well - start when a RUU comes out + HTC4350 WM6 updates.
Before it's quite difficult to brake into the bootloader etc.
But some program suggestions:
- mtty
- IMGFS (some tools in it)
good luck
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them. I was wondering if there was a readme/FAQ/Wiki that went into explaination on the terminology and whatnot regarding these monsters. I have no idea what an RUU is and I'd much rather read about it than bother people here with my newbieness.
I don't even know how to modify registry settings
In general, search for words like "ROM cooking; RUU; IPL; SPL; Bootloader; NBH file system; Extended ROM; Custom ROM" in all the forums to get an overview.
Keep in mind that the Herald has a newer ROM file system, so don't "copy" instructions 1-to-1.
Wizard, Hermes and Prophet subforums are very busy forums with lot's of infos on this topic, but again they all use an older ROM system.
And as xsign already mentionend better don't start ROM hacking on your device yet, because neither HTC nor any provider released an official WM6 ROM.
So there is no backing up solution yet in case something went wrong.
Hacking the Bootloader is right now impossible and therefore working custom ROMs are very very rare over here.
Cheers

To have the latest and greatest, or one that fits your needs better then what your service provider thinks your needs are.

No worries man, welcome to the community Chances are however you may end up with a few 'Just search!!' answers but I understand there is almost too much info to understand out there but do check out the sticky threads at the top of the HD2 rom development forum as there is a wealth of detail there.
In answer to your question: 'why would anyone want to mod the rom or mess with it? please kindly answer it.'
There are many reasons for doing this, I assume that you come from the 'HTC probably know whats best for their phone as they made it' point of view, this is not always the case.
Let's take a real simple example: There is a limited ammount of space in internal memory and the more you can get the better and some of this space is taken up by pre-installed applications and images that you may never use and some of these can't be removed simply by deleting.
This is where 'cooking' roms comes in: In order to remove those apps you have to create a new OS image (rom) without them in (this is cooking, which is generally performed by experienced people who will publish their roms in the roms forum) and then to be able to get that on your device you need to 'flash' the cooked rom (OS image) onto your device (think of flashing as installing the OS like you would windows from CD on a PC) , and viola you have a new rom on your phone which leaves you more space in internal memory to use for yourself.
There are obviously far more complex reasons for cooking roms (speed improvements, fixes, mods and changes to the UI) but in order to keep this short and simple I've used the above example. If you want to know more check the noob tutorials in the rom forum.
Be careful however, and ensure you read all the information you can search for / find in there as there are some potential pitfalls if you don't do it properly.
Thanks prime! I got it now :]

[Q] WinMo6.5 for an old device

Hello!
One of my friends brought me an old Yakumo delta 300 GPS 2L PDA from Germany, to install a new WinMo on it.
Does anybody know how to do it? I really know nothing about doing such things, and all I could find about updating such a device was a german forum, with outdated links.
It would be very important for me! Thanks!
to build a 6.5rom for those devices u should make many files
one of the most importantes is NK.EXE that u can easily put that in ur rom with new Ervius kitchen
Problem is that I don't know how to do so. I have no experience in Windows Mobile, that's why I am asking for your help.

Its not so simple since you aren't exprenced with Windows Mobile devices. Its highly possible to brick the device easily if something goes wrong.
First the device should be CID unlocked so that you can flash custom ROMs.
Second you will need to find custom ROMs for it or else if you want to cook, you either need to get a stock ROM of it so that you can dump it, replace its files (i.e SYS and XIP), recook it using suitable kitchens, finally flash it but its not over. There are many thing to do. And I say again its possible to brick the device if something goes wrong.
I would better suggest to stay with what ever it has.
Since HTC is very popular, we research lot and minimize risks before doing anything but your device seems very old and not known much so its risky job.
As Mr.zeus said, NK.EXE is just a part or file of/in the kernel aka XIP. You will need many things to cook a ROM. Stock ROM of your device would be good for start.
Thanks...
Best Regards
Well, thank you very much.
Then looks like, I am shot here :S
Can you please give me any navigation system what should work on this device, and has maps for Hungary, Germany, Austria?
i can tell u one thing...my htc wizard is running wm6.5.3...so it is quite possible to hav new os on old fone.....

[Q] Android on the HTC HD2 (HELP!!)

Hi,
I hope someone can help im trying to load Android on to my HD2 and ive not had much success so far.
Ive got through forums after forums and im now at a dead end!!
I have a typical HD2 - on the Virgin Network now ive been looking through youtube vids and forums and all there mobiles have been T-Mobile models (i dont no if this makes a difference) althought i no some one with a Virgin Mobile one and theyve done it they gave me a link to use that they used but its not longer active.
Ive tried serveral different Android Roms but nothing works i start the intall proces and i either end with this -
HaRET boot
Sutting down hardware
Turning off NMV...
In preloader
PSR=600000df
Tags reloadedto 0x11b00100 (size 0x00000f00)
Kernel rel0cated to 0x11B0B000 (SIZE 0X0026F2EE)
Initrd rel0cated to 0x12200000 (size 0x001cfde1)
Jumping to Kernel (custom) ...
AND FREEZES
or i get this -
The boot loader starts and seems to be loading and intalling and then for no reason just stops mid flow and fades out.
it this untill i take the battery out and put it back in again and it loads windows 6.5 fine.
this is doing my nut in and i would like to get rid of Windows 6.5 and have android put on to here it so much better!
I hope you can help thank you inadvance!
Cool Breeze
Firstly this section is for development not Q&A.
Second, What you are doing isnt going to replace your winmo 6.5, it will still be there. The process you are trying to do is simply to make your phone reboot into android kernel and boot from sd card from and android "build" NOT a "rom", You are not installing anything.
If you want to replace winmo you need to install MAGLDR and then flash one of the NAND roms to your phone.
I noticed you didnt mention anywhere about your spl or radio versions which makes me think you haven't even bothered to go and read any guides before creating this topic in wrong place.
Go and do some reading of the guides which you will find in the stickies or by searching forum.
Cool
Thank you i think! new to the website trying to find a little help and all i get is attitude wicked!!!
Sorry i posted in the wrong place but rather than giving me attitude you could point me in the direct of a threat that would help me!!

You haven't even bothered to do the most logical thing in a forum, which is to read the stickies where 9/10 the info you need is located.
So please give me a reason why I should wipe your arse?
I dont mind helping people alsong as they also try and help themselves, but people who come here and go directly into posting a topic is just pure lazyness. If you want help and support at least have the manners to attempt to read a little first.

[Q] I'm just tooo noob for all this...just guide me around

I just purchased an unlocked TMobile HTC Leo, which I'm gonna use with att. I've heard all the capabilities this phone still delivers and being honest, I'm really excited about upgrading it to an Android OS from day one. On the same note, I have to say that I'm overwhelmed by the variations of ROMs, ways to install them, etc, etc, etc...I'm not a techie by any means, the only related experience I have is changing the OS on my BB bold2. believe when I say I had being checking threats after threats for hours in order to not deal with a dumb troll, but all I could find was old guides (a year old or so). so if somebody can pitch me a couple of useful noobie tips, send me some links of updated guides, any warnings or has a useful comment, be my guest.
This is all you need, i think....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136644
And you have to read those two very short and small warnings before you start :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16255579&postcount=2
and this ..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16256932&postcount=3
i agree that whats listed above should be rather helpful but you should also read this thread found here. its Flashing Your First HD2 NAND Android Rom [For Newbs] & will guide you through the steps in order to get Android onto your device. this thread was written with the noob in mind so everything is written rather simple in a straight forward manner. the steps listed on that page will have you lose winmo and it will be replaced by Android. if you want a sd build then i would suggest one that has Android already built in like this one so you can get a feel for it before deciding whether or not to go to a nand build.
please before you flash any rom/radio/kernal/...people you have an idea of what your doing or atleast know what not to flash. if you have a 1024 leo flash 1024 leo roms if you have a 512 leo flash 512 leo roms
Sorry, unrelated but I couldn't help pointing out this:

'Threats after threats'...
welcome. good reads above.
just wanted to let you know, too, that with the tmousa on att, you will NOT get 3g. just edge. that is a hardware issue. if you want 3g, you will need the telstra version of the hd2. but i reckon you know this, but thought i'd share just in case.
enjoy.
why not try some of the SD builds first? at least you don't risk bricking your device, and can enjoy android until you feel ready to flash NAND
thank you guys for the quick responses and inputs. its cool to know that you belong to a dedicate comunity such as xda; I'll check out my options and let you know my progress. thnx again
lol, threads AND threats as well!! there's some short temper ppl around...
