the quality of the android market is really disappointing. the ratio of quality apps to apps that are pointless and just...there, is staggering.
ugh.
I felt that way all the way back when I had my G1 lol. I have a few core apps that I use on all of my phones though, and they are pretty much all I need.

I guess I've never had a problem with sifting. Between poking around here, doing some web searches for popular/interesting apps, and and looking at apps from the developers whose apps I like, I've yet to get completely bored with the market and checking out apps.

Keep in mind that android is fairly new. They are right next to apple which has been out for years. They are trying new things don't worry bro things will turn around. The thing I like about Android is that its not as territorial as apple is. You have a lot more freedom.

I agree. You should be able to sort them by ratings or number of downloads.
Try to use alternative market interfaces like AppBrain.com , they filter the crap out for you, you can chose apps on PC and then sync them to your phone in a batch and more. Definitely makes the experience much closer to appstore.
Yeah...because the iApp store doesn't have any **** apps.....anyone need another fart machine?
Sure the iStore is not far behind in crapps but at least the search function results have *some* relevancy. Finding apps on android market without knowing the exact name is very unpleasant.. hell even if you know the name you get 50 less relevant results up front sometimes.
That's where appbrain comes in
I love android but our apps are nowhere near the same quality. The only app i have seen properly ported to android is angry birds.
Well I'd hate to say it but fragmentation has a lot to do with the lack of quality apps. IMO devs just don't want to get involved as they have to code for some many different slight variations of our OS and devices vs just one from you know who.

But is that not just the same as having different iOS firmwares?
I have a iPhone 3G with firmware on iOS 3.1.3, an iPod touch with firmware on iOS 3.1.2, an iPhone 4 on firmware iOS 4.1 etc?
Its not as if they are coding for a completely different platform are they? and its not even the back end of the software which I feel android is weak. In fact I think the working function aspect of a lot of the android software is superior because it can be (without all those restrictions that the AppStore has), however its the User Interfaces/User Experience where very little time has been spent. It seems like in some apps its still just an afterthought.
I guess I will see how it goes.

This statement could probably be made about nearly anything you can buy in America. When you shop for books or music or clothing, or anything, 99+% of what's available are "pointless" to any given individual. Do we need 1000 cereals to choose from in the grocery store? No, but Choice comes with the downside of having to filter and hone in on what fits your needs.
AppBrain is the easiest answer to your concern for now. Not only are there various ways to sort and filter the apps, but recommendations are made based on your personal app selection history.
Though it takes more work, reading forums and reviews of apps (and asking others for advice) gets you all the information you'd ever need.

Yes but in a much smaller scale. Here we have the same different os versions as well the addition of manufactures own software tweaks ie Sense, Touchwiz etc... all on top of many different devices with lots of different major components.

I've gotten the impression (maybe incorrectly) that a lot of the developers here are against ads in apps. I don't understand that, as I believe it to be the only way to generate revenue for free apps. Possibly, it's an issue of youth and it's naivete (the idea that everything is not about about money...ha ha ha). I don't mean that to sound offensive. I was once young too, but as you age and become responsible for more than a couch, a tv and pizza, you realize that money is what makes the world go round.
Anyway...Evernote...this a pretty major app (over 9 million users) with what I'm guessing are some actual employees that support it. That means they're not doing it "for fun," and probably require those pesky little paycheck thingies. It's free and it has no ads. How does it generate revenue?

Donations of course!
But seriously, free apps generate revenue in several ways. Probably the biggest way is companion products or services. Evernote has a premium type subscription that is probably where the revenue comes from.
Even if the app and service is completely free, maybe they sell other products and the app is "Free Advertising" in that if that app is useful, other products by that company are useful and thus I'm going to buy them.
Finally, one of the newest ways that free apps are generating revenue is through in-app purchases. Look at Facebook apps for examples.
Either way, if your company is big enough, there is less of a need for ads in apps to generate funds. This forum is a group of hackers/enthusiasts/developers that for the most part do development in exchange for other people's hard work. Since we do a lot of free apps, we have the "right" to complain about ads in apps We put in the hard work and give our products away for free, and we survive, why can't everyone else!?
I kid of course.
Cheers
Any rooted user is going to be running adfree and droidwall, so looking beyond ads is probably a good idea.

obviously the right answer so donations or simply making it a paid app will cut the ads as people downloading from the server is costly.

DONATION! Haha. I always donate to those who created apps and make my life easier.
And also not to forgot those who created ROM and KERNAL.
It is a good point to say that some of the most successful and widespread programs and sites are not profitable nor nearing it. Skype loses money, but it's been bought at high sums already twice. Twitter hasn't ever broken even, but it keeps getting lots of funds.
Therefore, if you think you have a successful app in the oven, make it, make it real good, and funding will come later.

You don't need to be young or naive to write free software. It can be a hobby that you do in your spare time (rather than golfing or watching TV).
It can be more economical than other popular hobbies because it does not require major investment or expenditure.

Not any rooted user. Some of us understand that ads generate revenue for the developer so we don't block them.
As to the OP: some less reputable developers will also collect and sell user data for revenue.
The dominant ad business model is pay-per-click. Making money from pay-per-view ads is limited to a handfull of large companies.
With hundreds of thousands of apps the audience is so diluted that most ads mainly serve to annoy the users into paying to get rid of 'em.
Blocking banner ads is not really a problem. If a small percentage of users blocks them the revenue loss is close to zero. If a large percentage blocks them then developers will have to think of something else, just like web site builders had to think of something else when every browser came with a built-in popup blocker.
Popup blockers didn't kill the internet, and AdFree won't empty the app stores.

Unless you program the app to close if the user is using "ad-blocking" software, which is what i do.
And then the next generation of ad blockers will make your app believe that there's no ad blocker running.
And then the next generation of adware will try to fix this.
And then the next generation of ad blockers...

That's true, but I like competing those ad blockers.
Anyone here actually believe that just because you pay money for an app it will not steal your data or open a back door to your device?
Think again!
Even in the PC world, the biggest companies like Microsoft constantly spy on their users, with the official excuse of "fighting piracy".
So pleas don't assume that application price is any guarantee of security, or for that matter, quality.
Also, there are other types of very real and very useful gain to be maid from Free Software (I am reffuring to what people often call "open source", not apps that simply cost 0$).
One example is reputation. When software companies hire developers, they often ask for years of experience, so it is hard for someone fresh to get a job in the field, and even when they do, as all starting positions the pay is relatively low.
Open source projects however, can be worth much more on programmers resume, then simply claiming X years of work for a given company.
The reason is that such projects allow potential employers to evaluate the actual skill of the applicant by looking at his work.
^^^ That is very true.
I just got hired to work for a new startup company based solely on a couple of free Android apps that I made in my spare time.
I do have years of experience in non-android programming though, but still, without those two private projects I couldn't have found a paid-job in Android...
Hello guys,
For those using the official 2.3 rom I would like to shar some apps I find very useful and I think some might also miss from custom roms:
- QuickPic
Very good Image and Video Gallery and almost identical to MIUI's.
The Gallery available in stock rom is just a big failure and almost nude of options.
This one is just absolutly complete and good!
- Quick Boot
Miss the 4 way reboot menu from custom roms? Well not anymore....
- Moboplayer
A powerful video player.
- Go Launcher EX
For me the best Laucher. Very custobizable, easy and fast.
Also, many many many free apps, widgets, themes, etc
- TunIn Radio
Very good online radio app.
Well, hope you enjoy.
If you wish to share your apps with others just post

Also I'd like more ligux tools, instead of quick boot for reboot menu:

My opinion will be subjective, so please read the following stories with your clear mind. If you still trust 360Safe/Qihoo company, you can still use their products.
Here's some true stories occured in China internet history:
An evil man - HongYi Zhou(周鸿祎)
Evil #1: At the early internet age in China, there was a IE browser helper object called 3721 Internet Assistant - the most notorious malware developed by 3721 company - HongYi Zhou's company. Evil behavior: force install, hard to uninstall, ad popup, etc...
Evil #2: Yahoo China acquired 3721 company at 2003, and 3721 Internet Assistant renamed to Yahoo Assistant. It should change to nice under a big company, right? NO! it still act as evil as it was, all the evil behaviors on 3721 still exist on Yahoo Assistant.
Evil & Ridiculous #3: Zhou left Yahoo later, and become CEO of an "unsafe" company - 360Safe, then 360 claim Yahoo Assistant is malware! What kind of man (especially a business man) will do that? You created a son and raise it with your full energy, then one day, you said your son is a freak, and you will kill it, an evil man did this! I think this touched the bottom line of moral as a human being, and Zhou did it.
An evil company - Qihoo/360Safe company
3QWar2010: Year 2010, the QQ-360 war (we called ThankYou/3Q war by transliteration) was initiated by Qihoo/360Safe company. Basically, 360PrivacyGuard monitored any process named QQ.exe even if you rename notepad.exe to QQ.exe, and give its users an alert said QQ.exe is scanning your files etc... and 360QQGuard act like a trojan, it inject QQ software to remove advertisment in QQ software and blocked autoupdate service of QQ and replace the default browser launcher in QQ to their own 360Browser. What kind of "safe" company did such an unsafe trojan software? 360 did! If you ask why, I will say because their boss is Zhou. Fortunately, Qihoo lost the lawsuit at last.
I won't say "once a criminal, always a criminal", but I would say "dog eat ****, it never changed, it never will"(狗改不了吃屎 in Chinese). If you're an Android fans before and today you suddenly becomes an iPhone fans, you should check your dream first to see if you are 《Inception》ed by Leonardo before you're sure you really becomes an iPhone fans. That's my personal opinion on this company. For me, I never trust this man and this company, and you?
That's why I don't suggest you to use any software products developed by 360, personally.
Apology for my bad English, wish you can understand it.

Even though I don't know anything about HongYi Zhou(周鸿祎), I have to agree with him about the 360safe company. I've been working with computers since back in the 286(80286) days, both software and hardware wise. I'm also an American living in China, and I've used a lot of "chinese" computers while I've been here. This 360Safe software is really strange stuff. Let me give you an example, the one that sealed the deal for me. There is an android app by 360safe. I won't write the name because it's probably banned on XDA forums and I'd rather not get banned for writing it. It is a program for downloading android warez and will check for new update on those warez. It's essentially an illegal version of Android market, they even say so themselves:

With huawei handset, if you are like me, bit tired that every custom rom has that one thing that does not work, or even if you are extremely like me and decided in the end to just keep the original .32 kernel Froyo, Root Explorer or ES filemanager on rooted system is a must.
All those huawei's default apps, crap, so much crap, and some even not usable for international users. Worse even, you cannot uninstall any of it. And some things are confusing, like having a huawei music, and android default music app. Personally I removed both replacing music with newest google music. I personally like rootexplorer for the job, you can explore inside APK files and find what ones have .huawei in their com line so you do not accidentally delete actually useful piece of software.
Thanks for the tip with quickpic. I really long after briefly trying MIUI wanted a seperate app for gallery (I would like option to choose manner the pictures are sorted by) - and now I probably found it.

FriendCaster facebook is also a great app. If you check running apps you will se that official facebook app uses 24 or more MB of RAM and stays at running processes even when you dont use it while FriendCaster only uses 10MB and goes to cached processes if you dont use it. Technically, there's no amount of money that can get you advertised on Google Play's main pages. They're strictly based off of user ratings, redirects to your Google Play page (or so I've heard), the size of your user-base, the overall quality of your game, and of course whether or not the Google employees who are responsible for main page ranking deem your app/game interesting enough.
There's many theories all over the place as to how you can get way up there posted on various blogs and websites, but unfortunately there's no single answer. Though, having a 'Top Developer' badge probably makes it 100x easier to appear on the main pages, but getting that in itself is not a goal most people will ever achieve unfortunately.

The way to get high ranking is promoting your app and get more clicks.. If you really want to get profit or monitize your app, you should spend some money on advertising and cooperate with some digital advertising company and precisly target your audience.

google cannot be bought, if your app is good and they like it, they will feature it, else they wont.
Fast growth generally will move you up the rankings. If you launch a new app go and advertise it a little bit so that it can move up the rankings fast. Focus on retention, google loves apps that have high user retention.
Large downloads + High retention + good ratings above4.0+high quality app are main ingredients.
Nowadays Google also started apps recommendations as per the previously installed or downloaded app from the play store. So if your app resembles with relevancy then your app will automatically get up higher in the ranking. Thanks
So, the question have been asked a million times before, but mostly for free game apps, which is very differently from other useful paid tools apps.
Since my app is targeted for emergency situations, its not suitable for in app ads, also its an app that isnt necessarily used every day.
How do you market a app like this?
Saying "just post it on Facebook G+, Twitter" we all know its not as simple as that. Its like saying, how do you win a competition, just make sure you win. Of course, but how do you win?
Getting featured on Mashable, Techcrunch, Engadget and all that is the solution to your headaches, but with thousands of inquiries every week, its virtually impossible to get noticed, no matter how creative your approach are...
Does it mean we have reached the point where its impossible to succeed in the app market unless you have a million bucks for marketing, or are lucky to get featured in the big press?
What you guys think? I feel proved methods of successful marketing are outdated after just a couple of months.
