Looking for a simple way to replace the EV with 3G on the task bar icon.
Any help appreciated!
Go into a 3G zone and it will say 3G
All the icon files are acually in your phone.... meaning the 3G one is in there as well. I would assume you could just copy and rename the 3G one to whatever the EV symbol is to replace it... I could very well be wrong though.
Question though, if your EV says 3G how will you know if you're in a 3G area or not?
On a CDMA device, 3G is EVDO. Whenever you have EVDO showing, that means you're in a 3G area.
By default, it will not explicitly show the 3G icon.
I'm kind of confused. After flashing cyan's rom, my service keeps switching between 3g and H. This has not happened prior to me flashing the rom though. What is H? Is it a fixable problem?
Could be wrong, but it's probably H for HSDPA
Oooh its actually a bonus for me at least, since before, my Nexus showed 3G whther it was connected to the faster HSDPA or to 3G (Unlike my Hero, which showed H or 3G)
will have to give CM Rom a go once my Nexus arrives back from HTC
Dayz
Cyanogen's ROM enabled the notification if you are on HSPA network. I beleive you will get 3G if your network changes to UMTS (depends on your location). The stock ROM shows 3G even if you are on the HSPA network.
Ohhhh alright. I understand then. It still bugs me though lol
Yes i can verify this is the case, reason why i jumped ship to cynogens rom

since by default the phone is after the fastest avail option, it tries to get to 3G. if and when you are in the area with uncertain 3G coverage, it could scan and switch to 3G, then to HSDPA (hence - H) or even EDGE (E)
I have this mess on the stock N1 - 3G-H-E changing constantly in some areas.
bad thing is that in such case my data stalls:-( I guess it has nada to do with Cyan's ROM. fwiw
No he must have done something, normally Nexus only shows 3G even if there's HSDPA.
I have HSDPA and here with Stock ROM it only shows 3G, but you can see in the Settings at Status that you've got HSDPA.

Actually, HSDPA is faster than "3G" (which I'm assuming is actually UMTS), so your phone will use HSDPA whenever it can, then downgrade to 3G if HSDPA isn't available, then EDGE, then GPRS. HSDPA is actually considered "3.5G, 3G+ or turbo 3G" according to its Wikipedia entry.

He did do something. Someone already asked him on Twitter and he answered here.
This reminds me of my times with Windows Mobile where you'd change a registry setting to make the indicator show you had an EDGE connection instead of always showing G (for GPRS)
Quite nice, I was missing this on Nexus

did you even read what I wrote? The stock ROM has the H icon but for some reason its disabled so that only the 3G icon shows up if you have HSPA. Cyanogen simply enabled the H icon to be usable.
I wonder why though, they would disable it...
I cant think of any solid reasons, and if it is in-fact better then "3G", You would think they would want people to know that they have a faster connection present..
but anyways, thanks cyanogen

Given the confusion in this thread alone, which is presumably made up of people who know more about their phones than the general public, I think it's reasonably obvious why it's disabled. The phone companies have spent lots of money and time marketing "3G" to the public - most people will know what you're talking about if you say 3G, almost none of them will know what HSDPA is, and I doubt the cell phone company wants to spend the time to explain that it's actually better than standard 3G to every customer. It's just that much easier to make it say "3G" and be done with it.
ISTR that my Hero and Touch Diamond2 before that, and Touch Cruise before that, all showed a 3G symbol on hsdpa until you were actually downloading something - then it changed to show a H before returning to a 3G when stopped downloading.
I think!

My Post was regarding this, it can't be that has H in display with stock ROM
So, this 'H' HSDPA signal display should be a fix in the OTA update?
Is there a possibility that someone answer here and explain how to enable H icon showing?
I think it's in framework-res.apk but don't know where exactly...
I don't want to install a cyanogenmod rom or others to have it. Who have already done it, could share that information with us...this is a forum..

I want to enable the H icon on the stock ROM.
Rooted phone, custom recovery, locked bootloader.
Is this possible?

I'm not able to decompile framework-res.apk to source...i've done some tries but with apktool that's not possible...
It is not sufficient open it with winrar or similar because config.xml is in the core....
I was wondering if there is a way to lock onto ONLY umts and not hsdpa? It can sometimes take forever to load web pages because it is constantly searching for hsdpa. I am also wondering if you might be able to get better battery life this way as well?
I don't think battery life is going to be different since it's still technically a 3G connection. But if it is really searching for HSDPA a lot then it -may- make a difference.
Are you on T-Mobile? It seems that I'm on HSDPA at all the times, pretty much.
switching between 3g and HSDPA is not the same as switching between EDGE and 3G
As the poster above says 3G and HSDPA are basically the same technology using the same frequencies so would not make much difference to battery life.
Dont forget that on the stock rom it always displays 3g anyway so you cant see if you are using HSDPA or not.
Also this phenomenon seems to vary as to what network you are on, mine mostly stays on H anyway.
From memory the early 3g handsets that did not support HSDPA topped out at about 300kbps, not sure if that translates to the 3g symbol not the n1 though. not sure if thats what you would want, as its not much faster than EDGE anyway? so you might as well force EDGE only and save battery life
changing bands 3g only
yes this is possible. Go to your phone dialer and enter the following: *#*#4636#*# .you will go to another screen, select phone, scroll down and there is a drop down box that shoud say wcdma preferred. Select wcdma only and that should give you 3g connectivity only. You can change back or select other settings from this screen. You can choose what works best for you in your area. It should slightly improve battery life, since it is no longer looking for other connections. If you have poor 3g service in your area, then you probably do not want to select wcdma only. I hope this helps. I have done this on my rooted n1 and a non rooted n1. As long as you only change this one one setting it shoud not harm your phone.

Good answer, but totally NOT what the OP was asking. He wants to know if there's a way to lock the phone to UMTS and not HSDPA... the answer to that is NO... because both are 3G, as someone else already alluded to.
Ok so I have been messing around with the evo and doing a new rom for the whole cricket thing.
One thing i have noticed while doing this is that the EVO DOES NOT drop down to 1x at all. So i decided to write a 1x PRL to the phone. The phone reports that it is ON 3G network. This is not possible and I think that is wrong. Sprint has the phone reporting that it is 3G even though its on a 1x network.
If his has been discussed please let me know thanks.

Sorry to deviate from your original message but is there a way to force 1x? I'm assuming 1x uses less energy than EVDO/3G; so if true, it would be beneficial to switch to 1x when idling/display is off. Maybe tasker or juice defender already does this?
Edit: On CM6 I hit 1x from time to time. At least the status bar reports it as 1x. Could be a Sense/HTC bug.
Edit 2: It seems that Android doesn't have a API for 3G/2G toggling. Sucks.
No your fine, Yes CM does go to 1x. This isnt based off a sprint rom. Its not a HTC Sense issue because I had ported a incredible rom a while back to the phone and it would drop to 1x. I just tried a new port for 2.2 from the incredible and its doing the same thing.
It is possbile that it could be a HTC Sense Bug in the 2.2 Froyo. But i really think that Verizon and Sprint are not wanting it to drop to 1x. Wich i think is wrong.
The way i forced it was to load a 1x PRL on the phone.
I'm connected as 3G "False" as i checked the speed now and I only got 39.62kb wich is far from the 1565.1kbs i checked before switching PRL.
Maybe you already knew this, but I'm pretty sure that for a 1xRTT network the 3G icon in stock htc sense roms simply greys out. At least that's what I remember seeing in the manual. When the phone is connected to 3G the icon turns white.
I don't know - I'm almost positive that I've seen a 1x symbol in my status bar instead of 3g a few times. It's been a while though...
Well from what i see thats not true.
Im on 1xRTT right now. The icon is a solid white.
Even if that was the case and it should grey out. That is completely deceiving. It should accurtly show it is on the 1x network.

sorry - who was this to? Also, I know there's a 1x symbol in the framework - it's got to be there for a reason, right?
OK I just checked the manual and it has a 1X icon. You're right.
Edit: The com.htc.resources.apk where sense signal icons are located contains the images for 1X so maybe it's something in the xml's that prevents the phone from either correctly notifying a 1X signal or bypassing the connection all together. HTC obviously intended for the phone to connect to 1X if they took the time to sensify the images. Strange.
Yes HTC intended for it but thats not the case. Has anyone on sprint successfully dropped to a 1x Connection ? Here is what I notice if im not forcing a 1x connection.
If it looses a 3G connection, it does not successfully drop to 1x. It just looses 3G all together then tries multiple times to go to 3G if it doesn't succeed you loose internet.
If you have a 1x prl it loads 1x but shows its a 3G connection wich is not true at all. This is disappointing.

ummm...yeah - like I said in my prev post, I've seen the 1x icon appear on my phone in parts of nj where I wasn't picking up 3g.
What ROM are you using ?
OK Im going to grab my friends Evo tonight that is on a sprint a force a 1x connection and see if his shows accurately or not.
I assume your custom PRL is forcing a 1X connection on sprint towers and not verizon or something? The phone may only show a drop to 1X if on sprint's network. If you are on verizon or cricket or something it probably wont indicate 1X.

I was either using stock, or an older version of baked snack.
Its not a custom PRL the one im using is a cricket prl. Made only for 1x network. It does not support EVDO.
Sprint has a few 1x PRL's only and I will load his phone with it and test it.
That doesn't make sense. The phone being on cricket or any other service would not make the phone report its on 3G all time. I flash a lot of phones to cricket. Like i said before this is a Sprint Rom issue. I loaded it with a incredible ROM and it successfully drops to 1x connection.
fachadick,
You might have been using baked snack rom.
Im checking tonight with the service on sprint.
So far its confirmed.
Two people with HTC EVO's on sprint.
One (Me) on with evo on cricket.
We forced all three EVOs to work on 1x connection only. All three of them are showing 3G icon but are only getting 1x speeds. This is very deceiving.

The reason I say it might not work on a PRL from another carrier is because when I am roaming I get a triangle above my reception, but the data icon remains 3G if I remember correctly. The actual data connection is only 1X because of roaming agreements, so what I am theorizing here is that the phone only changes to 1X when you are on an authentic sprint network and the connection drops to 1X. This is probably built into the rom, which is why it works for other phones, but not the EVO.
Because you are using a "roaming" PRL, I would think that the phone doesn't trigger the change to 1X icon just like actual roaming with a Sprint PRL. That's my hunch.
Yes i understand what you are saying, and yes that is plausible.
But doesn't explain why when we force the sprint ones they do not change to 1x ? I can force any other phone to 1x on the sprint network.
Sprint does this thing where they display "3G" even when the phone is only connected using 1xRTT.
Does anyone know if there's a way to make the phone show 1x for 1xRTT and 3G for EVDO and eHRPD? There's a big difference between 1x and EVDO (60-130Kbps vs 750-1800Kbps) where I live and it'd be nice to know at a glance without having to open Settings->About->Status->SIM Status
Signal check will show what band/ connection type in status bar.
This Signal Check? Is that a pro-only feature? I'm not seeing anything about status bar in the Lite version of that app.
An app running in the background is ok, but I'm really more interested in something like flashing a new icon or changing a hidden setting or something. I'm currently on stock rom, but would changing ROMs fix the icon?
Yep looks like it's pro only
I found the free version of LTE Discovery can also do this, it just doesn't start on bootup.
