Or use JuiceDefender Beta
Juice Defender Pro?
What Exactly Does That App Do. The Same Thing That The Turn Off Data Mode Does? Or Does It Allow Data To Work While It Saves The "Juice" Of The Battery.

That's not how I want to keep a long charge. What about email, and internet based apps/games? Juice defender works ok but it took too long to auto enable/disable data.
Theres an app called DC Switch that I used with Android 2.1, that does the exact same thing as the "Data Network Mode" toggle in 2.2. It even has a widget you can use to toggle.
Nothing new.

I agree. Whats the point of having the phone at all if your miracle to saving battery is essentially removing all of the features that make it a "smart phone". Its like saying "I get unlimited battery by simply plugging it into the wall and keeping it on wi-fi. Just dont go anywhere or doing anything. Its great! I did already beat Dungeon Defenders three times.... I wonder what the outside world looks like? Oh wait there is an App for that!"
The point of a smartphone is to have the "option" to have all the stuff on all the time. A smartphone gives you a choice. That's what makes it smart.

"when you aren't using data services"
There is the issue right there. Many of us rely on our apps to automatically use said data services - such as email, weather, twitter, etc. pretty much all the things that people tend to buy a smart phone for - and turning it off defeats the purpose of having such a device.

First off, I would just like to state that I did not use any sort of task-killer or ever even kill any apps that were already running. The ONLY app that I used to affect my battery life was Autostarts. This is not a task-killer, because it does not run in the background and kill apps that are already running. It simply changes WHEN apps are allowed to start by changing the permission on them. You can even use it to disable when system apps are allowed to run. The interface is extremely simple: It lists the conditionals for when apps start themselves typically (i.e. text received, screen turned off) and shows you all of the apps set to start at those times. You can then disable all of the apps you want.
I was able to get the best battery life that I had ever gotten using this app and the latest DamageControl 3.2 ROM. After over 14 hours of pretty moderate use I had 44% remaining. To me, that is the best battery life I have gotten on any smartphone (average discharge rate of 3.86%/hour compared with 5.0%/hour on the BlackBerry Tour, which had the second-best battery life). The discharge rate was also fairly constant. It didn't randomly burn like crazy any time I used the phone. I had actually been using the Fresh Evo .3 ROM before this, but I was getting awake time issues. Even when I would close all of the apps that started on boot something would still keep the phone awake (I'm guessing something that re-started itself all the time). I was able to clearly monitor the battery life using SystemPanel App. I installed DC and Autostarts Wednesday afternoon. You can see the results for yourself below. The top is a battery level, the middle is awake time, and the bottom is CPU activity.

If you click info on the repetitive ones, it's something different. Other than that, it's trial and error. Since it only affect autostarts, disabling it out shouldn't hurt. I did it on a bunch and restarted and everything is fine.
Thanks for the guide biles. I was getting pretty solid battery life but usually after 26 hours idle with 6 hours uptime, I'm at 15% and I noticed you're about 45%. Gonna test out this autostarts. Before I was using startup cleaner but it's a very basic program.

I haven't figured that out yet. I don't think you can due to handcent feeding off messages. When you install handcent, it re-routes message app to its program. That's why you can't do a straight up uninstall of message app and use handcent as the replacement.
You can give it a try and disable messages. If handcent doesn't work, just re enable it in autostarts and reboot.

Well I've been using Juice Defender for half a year on two different phones. How much battery it can save you is debatable. So long as you don't have excessive SNS polling and partial wake data usage problems of some sort, it's not going to net you much of anything.
I was an ardent user of this app, but the last week running without it at all (running Bionix Final JI2 modem) compared to the first couple of days running this firmware I can say with confidence it's not needed for me any longer. I'd even go so far as to say I've been a victim of ye olde placebo effect.
If you don't have the pro version the automatic defaults are about as good as it gets. Best of luck.
Personally I had worse battery life with JD, I would stay away from it.
Sent from my Vibrant running Eugene's Froyo using XDA App
Get Tasker instead. It can do anything JD does and WAY more. JD worked for me, but it caused the stock ROM to run a but sluggish.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The main thing the JD does it seems, at least by default settings, are two things. First, by default it disables your APN connection (3G/2G) when battery falls below 15%. I've disabled this, I keep an eye on my battery anyway. The other thing by default is by far the better of the two. By default, it turns on your APN connection for 1 minute once every 15 minutes for a duration of 1 minute. By default, that's all this app really does, and it doesn't need to ping the CPU as it sits between 0.0% and 0.1% CPU utilization as reported by Watchdog.
I'm not advocating the use of this app nor am I claiming this will even save battery life, but given the knowledge of what its default settings do, I'm of the belief that having your APN turned off for a substantial part of the day will increase battery life between charges.
For completely non-technical users, JD is the way to go. However, with just a teeny more effort you can do WAY more than JD is capable of doing. Stock firmware with JD I could get up to about 14 hours of battery life. This is doing a bunch of texts, reading gmail, and getting Exchange mail via touchdown. With Bionix Fusion, J12 modem, not using JD, and keeping the phone in 2G and not 3G I can get significant battery life as the image below shows.
At the time this shot was taken, I was down to 15% battery and 4 hours according to Juice Plotter.

I been using with the Bionix 'core' kernal and it's giving me decent battery as opposed to no defender where battery life was not good at all. seems to work as advertised, i charged my phone 4 hours ago and it's at 100% (but didn't use for any calls yet) . Otherwise it would be at 92% or so without JD. Mileage will vary
Well, I think people are ascribing too much mysticism into what JD is really doing. With its default installation left intact, it simply shuts your 3G (APN) radio off when the phone becomes relocked (screen off), just as your wifi connection shuts down when the screen turns off. While the phone is locked, JD turns the 3G radio back on for a minute once every 15 minutes. That's it. There's really no magic. So, if you think having your 3G radio turned off automatically every time you shut the screen off sounds like it might save your battery, then it probably will.

I don't know why the CDMA cell radio eats soo much of it up.
I'm currently at 62 hours of up time (came off the charger at the same time) with about 3.25 hours of actual screen on time. Mostly on wifi just as you. about 4 hours. a little over an hour a day. I'm not glued to my phone like some of you guys are. It stays in my pocket and I pull it out to check the time or send a text message. It gets hundreds of 10-15 second bursts each day.

Hah indeed, I lasted through a 3 day weekend drinking binge on one charge and it was amazing. Probably not half of that for screen on time. Its been said and I find it to be true, when not in use it does hold its own in terms of a charge.
I can't even imagine what my battery stats would be if I played games or watched videos, tbh. 24 hours with 3 or more hours of screen on time is good enough for me.
Had to ask, was only curious

I'm currently at 62 hours of up time (came off the charger at the same time) with about 3.25 hours of actual screen on time. Mostly on wifi just as you. Ive had 6 phone calls, many text messages, and some basic screwing around on the phone and I'm only down to 36% battery so far. Stock red battery (1500 or 1600mah, whichever it is)

That is rediculous! I wish the new EVO's could run custom kernals. I get about 15-20 hours with moderate to heavy use, which isnt bad but if I could get 2 days that would be great.

Its all based on usage. I tend to get 5-10 hours of usage (depending on what I am doing) That can be over a 12, 24, 48 hour period.
From what I see, its really based on how much you use it, and what you are doing.
On a full charge of the 1500 stock battery, I get 5.25 hours of video playback watching movies on a plane.

Sent from my rooted Evo 4Gusing the XDA App.
Now we all know the real test (mind u, I don't drive) is with having GPS on... b4 root having it on for a 40 min ride would eat up my battery entirely. Ouch that was painful to see.

I am sick of poor performance of my EVO's battery. I am not able to use the phones full capability for sake of battery exhaustion fear. My Evo last for 6-7 hour a day for very light(almost no) use.
I juice up 6-7 Hours by:
1) Disabled background data in setting
2) Use Juice Defender
3) Uninstalled useless app from Sprint via Titanium Backup (this proves I am rooted)
4) Refrain my self to use phone for long voice call (less than 30 minutes a day)
5) Refrain my self to use applications. (Forget about Data hoggers like Netflix and other I use skyfire or Dolphin browser to read newspapers.)
6) Scheduled my Emails to sync once a day
The points 4,5 and 6 really pisses me off. If I can use my phone as a phone at the end of the day then what is the purpose of having a cell phone??
Anyways I am not using my EVO and Sprint's 4G to full potential in fear of battery. iPhone will mostly not offer me most of the things so I will be saving most of the battery at-least for a day and be able to talk more.(What most of the iphone users are claiming with coming of iOS5)
Switching to iPhone the biggest thing I have to lose is flash. I was thinking 4G network but again I am not using 4G most of the time in fear of saving battery.
In a phone these 3 features will fulfill my appetite:
1) Able to make calls
2) Use web browser
3) Use Navigation
It would be great to know what ROM and kernel you are using.
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712990
Let's keep in mind, the Evo's core is old and big.
It is an early 2009 core, in fact.
The newer cores, say in the Evo 3D, are half the size and much more efficient on the power consumption.
sounds like your phone isn't sleeping. what rom/kernel you running?
get spare parts app and see what's causing your wake lock
I used to have an iphone and never really got a good battery life out of it either, maybe a full 8hrs with normal usuage. Have u ever considered an extended battery? 2700mah's are relatively cheap on the internet. I have one and with heavy usage I can barely get it to drop below 50% on most days
lol with your "light" usage i could easily make it through two days. Something must be wrong.
I make it a whole day with sync on, background data on, push email, no juice defender, reading xda for a while, bunch of texts, and a little bit of calls.
+1 on using spare parts to find out what.
Using nav will eat your battery... no doubt about that. I will on the Iphone as well though.
I am completely stock right now and don't have my Trident Electra shipped in yet, so stock battery. I leave background data on, sync mail and other apps hourly, use Pandora and Dolphin HD regularly, Google Maps as needed, don't talk a lot but text and GMail constantly, and I have no problem getting through 10 to 12 hours without charging. Not as good as my old BlackBerry, but not horrible considering the huge screen and multiple uses. And being uprooted right now, all I use are Startup Manager and Advanced Task Killer with low security and crazy autokill on. Your screen must be awake constantly for some reason, I would look in to that.

Agreed, my phone (and battery) are over a year old and I would still get over a day of use with your usage. If you are considering going iPhone for battery alone but prefer Android OS, I would say no as there are other options to try first. However, if there are other reasons you want to go iPhone such as you prefer iOS or some other factor, then yes, you should switch.
OP, definitely post up what ROM/kernel you are running. I have a mod for AOSP kernels that helps battery life even more, so I'd be happy to get you a good setup
For me personally, an external battery charger fixed all my battery problems. Before I got mine, I swear I would unplug my Evo and by the time I hit my door it was showing 95%. As soon as I got the external, even on a completely stock Evo I got almost an hour of light use before it dropped at all. Since the gingerbread update though, battery use is simply amazing. I can work a 9 hour day and with light use I go home with 65-70% battery left.

I agree. I charge my battery in an external charger, that takes it to 100%.
Phone has been off charger for 10 hours now, with texting, surfing, few phone calls, and some games and I am at 71%
Even if I didn't use an external charger, worst case now I would be at 61%.
Something is wrong with your phone, or you have ****ty service where you are.
No way... that would be a reason to switch from an iPhone.
My iPhone friends are always cording up to recharge. I just reach into my fifth pocket to take out my spare battery, pop back cover and depleted battery out, replace with the fresh and power up. I never have to ever hover around a corded phone afraid to miss a call.
Don't understand how people would purchase a portable electronic device that you can't change the battery. To me that is unacceptable. I was able to do that in the sixties, why can't I do that now.
That is why these battery threads, at least to me, are superfluous.
Of course, YMMV. You all carry on about the battery work a rounds. Just letting you know there might be another way.

Honestly the reasoning, knowing Apple, is likely because they can control what battery you use, if you cannot remove it.
Preventing aftermarket batteries.
Stupid? Yeah.
Typical Apple? Yeah.
I wouldn't doubt I'm right.
1. Try a different kernel and/or ROM
2. Get an extended battery if you feel you need it. ( iPhone your stuck with the stock battery no matter what)
Problem solved.
Would Foghorn' Leghorn make a really bad narrator?
On topic: The iPhones battery starts to lose charge after about 7-8 months and its $75 to have it replaced. Battery life is definitely better but at least with HTC you can replace your own batteries; for a very small fee might I add.
Someone has a new avi lol.

THATS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL. I gave in to buying the extended battery from best buy for 70 bucks. And finally my battery lasts all day. I'm running decks x I think with tiamat 4.0.4 and viperboys mod and I used to not make a day without the extended battery. When u buy a phone it should last a day without extra money spent... so I'm either waiting for iPhone to come to sprint, nexus 3 if it has good battery life, or the photon 4g. Maybe even the sgs2. Engadget also reviewed the evo 3d, and said the battery might be worst than the evo 4g.
I have been desperately trying for SEVERAL months to find a way to get my Samsung Epic to last ONE DAY. Many of you might say thats EASY but not for me. You see I am a POWER USER. Not one of those send a few text message, listen to some music, play a game or 2 users. I actually TALK on my phone a LOT.
I purchased a Yoobao 2800 MAH battery a couple months ago, thinking it would solve my problems and to my dismay I could ONLY get about 5-6 hours with the way I use my phone. So I began searching for apps and configurations that would help me achieve my 24 Hour goal and yesterday I finally found a configuration that works.....
My Results
Battery Life 25 Hours which included 4 HOURS OF ACTUAL TALK TIME W/ BLUETOOTH USAGE
Including 3 email accounts (2 Yahoo set to 1 hour check and 1 Corporate "PUSH" email)
A WHOLE GANG Of TEXT AND PICTURE MESSAGES...LOL
What I Have
Samsung Epic w/Yoobao 2800 MAH Battery
Running Stock Rooted EG22 (Leak) and Generation X "Green" theme.
What I used
Set CPU:
Set up profiles for maximum battery save when screen was OFF and when battery went below 30 percent
Juice defender (Free Version)
Tweaked for maximum efficiency using advanced settings
What I did
Themed everything as dark as possible (Go SMS Pro, Go Dialer, Go Contacts)
No Live wallpaper (Ovious...lol)
My Findings:
Contrary to popular belief....Tasks running in the background IS NOT the biggest source of battery drain. HAVING YOUR SCREEN ON IS! I was having NO success with any of the top task killers so I STOPPED USING THEM ALTOGETHER. All they seem to do is run constantly in the background (Even when the screen is off) killing apps that will RESTART themselves anyway after a few seconds. Juice defender works in a different way. By cutting off the data connection when the screen goes dark. That means any time Ii was on a call and the screen was dark, my data was cut off. (I dont usually need it when I am on the phone anyway) During this entire process I had a rather light wallpaper on my phone. so Im sure I could probably have saved a lil more battery if I wanted to.
Hopefully this will help some people get more battery life out of their epics. After all, whats the point in having a great phone if you can only use it (the way it was INTENDED) for a few hours.
Good Day To All!
lolz
im runnin ec05, srf1.2 rom, bright red & black theme(transmattered reds made by me) pulldown animation, stock battery, no memory mods, live wallpaper(my theme is mostly transparent so the live wallpaper is playing almost all the time), play pandora average of 4-5hrs a day, constantly checking fb xda email market(i have 120ish apps lol), & i get about 13hrs a charge...
you should try those changes on srf1.2 rom if you already havent... some people running similar setups have reported 2 full days or more...
but instead of set cpu you should try voltage control

Pretty sure when you get a phone call it shuts off 3G anyways. Atleast whenever My phone rings my 3G symbol vanishes completely.
Congrats on the 25hours though
I dont think thats true... I've been on a call using speakerphone and 4g data at the same time... I think 4g data still works if you are on a call

The key to good battery life is making sure your phone is sleeping properly when not in use. If CPU Spy shows 100Mhz much higher than deep sleep, then you got something that is keeping your phone from sleeping. I had a problem with some HP printer monitor on one of my computers pinging my phone constantly on my wifi network that would kill my battery if I let it sit with wifi on at home.

Talking on the phone and the 3g network use the same antenna, so you can only do one or the other. 4g and wifi use a different antenna so they will still work for data while on the phone.

Thats unbelievable....
Until the newest RandomRom 2.3 Hawk I had the same problem trying to get my phone to last 24 hours. Now I have the RandomRom 2.3 Hawk installed with bloatware Removed, voodoo sound V9 module loaded, busy box pro and golauncher ex with over 100 apps also. 27 hours and I still have 14% battery life and that has been after using 4g for about 3 hours, flashlight for about 1 hour(teslaLED), played games for about 2 hours combined, sent about 40 emails, texted all day(about 150 texts), browsed the web for about 1 hour, watch some youtube videos for about 30 minutes and used navigation for about 30 minutes(coPilot). That is also with weather bug auto updating every hour and gmail sync'd to do its thing automatically. I am happier than I could ever describe now...I think I will finally leave my phone alone for a while now and stop flashing a million roms since I feel I have the best made for 2.3.4 now.
