Has anyone found a way to get tethering or Mobile hotspot to work with Edge network only?
I have some areas that I go to that do not get anything but and Mobile Hotspot only works if there is high speed. The tethering option is not there at all?
Hey, Yeah, i'm using it in afghanistan right now and all we have is edge here and work great. for mobile hotspot and on the lapdock. I followed the steps on this other thread

so, I am running 100% stock mtg4 on tmo. I just acquired a 1st refurb iPad yesterday that has work flawlessly with the mtg4 hotspot. However, my building at work only let's me have edge. when I enabled hotspot while on edge, the ssid won't show on my iPad nor other devices around the office. but as soon as I walk outside and get hpsa, my phone broadcasts the ssid and all is well.
is there any reason why hotspot would disable itself if all that is available is edge? I have been using PDA Net tethering my laptop occasionally over edge, and other than being slow it worked.
so, I am infer in the native hotspot code most be disabling itself if the phone is on edge...
any other people notice this behavior?
I can't speak for stock, but ...
Should you elect to root your phone and use a custom ROM, I can confirm that CM7's WiFi tethering works fine while on an EDGE connection. Where I work, EDGE is the only possible service, and I have the phone toggled 2G only when there to save battery.
Hi there,
I have a data plan of 500MB with Rogers Canada (on which tethering is not enabled). When I setup my phone as a wifi hotspot (or USB tether), a computer connects to the phone but there is no internet connection. Is this because tethering is not enabled on my sim card? If yes, how can the provider enforce it and is there a workaround for it?
Thanks for your time.

It's most likely your plan that does not offer tethering.
I am on AT&T, have no problem tethering on a stock job 4.2.2 ROM.
What happens when you enable hotspot on your phone?
Also, have you tried other WiFi tethering apps like foxfi?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
The connection between the phone and the computer is established but there is no internet connection.
Foxfi doesn't support nexus 4. It force closes when I enable its wifi tethering.

My internet is going to be down for a while and I wanted to tether it to my ipad. It's a unlocked at&t s4 with t mobile baseband to get LTE. Im currently using WICKED t mobile rom. I'm using the $30 t mobile prepaid for 5gb of LTE.
I tried all the wifi apps (foxfi, vpn shield, etc.) And tried a modded tether.apk file in the system app folder. None of it work. When I try to enable the hotspot, it said I needed to upgrade my plan to tether.
The wifi apps enable the hotspot, but when I connect with my ipad, a tmobile log in page pops up.
are there any works around?
I just discovered that when I use an app to turn my S4 into a hotspot it's actually sharing my mobile data...not the existing wifi that I'm connected too. Is there anyway that I could share the connection but wifi only. For example... if you were at a hotel and have to pay for internet access (per connection) and I wanted to share that one connection. I don't want to use my phone as a mobile hotspot since being away I'd be hit with huge roaming fees. I would leave the mobile data off.
Any suggestions....appreciated. Every app I come across is tethering Mobile data..

WIFI TETHER for Sprint S7 Sorry for typo
I am on a Sprint S7 G930PVPS4APK1 ANDORID VERSION 6.0.1. I live in the sticks and wifi tether is the only way I can get high speed for home. The quick reboot method no longer works. I have rooted other phones, but am no expert, and hesitate to try rooting my S7. Can't afford the ins if I brick it.
I have found From lots of reading (thanks to many) that using PDAnet+ alows me to use USB tethering to a laptop. The lap top will then work as a WIFI hotspot with what seems like reasonable speed. I was able to use the wifi on a tablet and stream Netflix, which is what I really want. Works great. It will be worth the $8 bucks to unlock PDAnet for unlimited data. So this works as Jan 2017 for free wifi hotspot.. I have seen no other recent references to this. i should mention i have unlimited data so have not
I do have a question While the WIfi hotspot from the tethered laptop works great, I can not seem to get my Chrome cast to connect to it. I really need this. It satys problem connecting to wifi router. I can't figure out why. The only clue? I constantly get a pop up on the laptop saying intel intelligent wifi is disabled while app running? any ideas would be very helpful TIA
