[Q] Video Streaming from CIFS/SMB Shares - Xoom General

Does anyone have this working on Honeycomb?

Not Me. I couldn't get that crap working on my phone. Why doesn't android support SMB by default. Sort of a glaring issue.

I am able to stream vids from my Win7 machine to Xoom through ES File Explorer without any issues once I set up the connection through the Lan settings in ES

I can see all my files through ES with no problem, but I can't get any video files to stream. I've tried lots of formats, and they all seem to need to transfer to the Xoom before they'll start playing.

I hope air video and stream to me come to honeycomb fast, these are the best streaming apps.

Streaming via smb using cifsmanager works, but very laggy

Hello
I've just got cifs mount work for my galaxy sii.
files can be seen in file expert and video can be played in moboplayer or rockpalyer
but the video performance is really poor. it's very laggy and sometimes freezing.
I am sure it's nothing to do with the players nor the video format since they play local same files very well.
I also found in some other threads complaining about the inefficiency of cifs mounting for streaming.
buzzplayer and xbmc on my ipad stream smb files very well for me, which also proves the problem in android is not due to my network or server.
Does anyone know any methods to improve the streaming performance in android?
Or recommend some player apps that natively support smb streaming like buzzplayer for ios?
Thx
Which kernel do you using?

[APP] Best cifs/smb manager and player for streaming. ES File Explorer / Dice Player

I have been looking around for good file manager for a while to connect to my windows shares and be able to stream flawlessly my HD content. As well access all of my shared files like i could form another windows node. Thats right even though i am a unix admin i still enjoy using windows. Well ok I game some enough said .
I have tried cifs manager and being an admin i tweeked with the mount options directio, rsize, wsize not much helped to enjoy my windows sharing experiance. I tried many other apps to no avail until I found ES File Explorer.
Used with Dice Video Player, it's an experience I have not been able to beat for HD video playback.
I know there is probably alot of you that know about it but after scanning the TF101 forum I didnt see a thread so heres my first post in the EeePad thread.
Attached is the app, enjoy!
i have been using the same combination for few weeks now and its really great.
+2 I have been using Es explorer with mobo player to stream and it works well even for windows media center hd recordings.

[Q] play movie from networked PC on A500

I have a bunch of movies on an external hard drive connected to my home PC.
I want to be able to play the movies on my A500 whilst connected to the TV elsewhere in the house (over wifi)
I've played with clearfi with no luck. Is there an app that will allow me to do this easily with just a few clicks ?
Cheerz
I use PS3 Media Server on my PC and Bubble UPNP on my A500. Works great.
Thanks. I'll give them a try later. Will it play .avi files ?
I'm running off Thor's ROM, but I've had no issues streaming avi files via upnp.
The easiest method is BSPlayer, it actually lets you view movies from a shared folder rather than UPnP. You might have some lag with large files, but it does the job better than trying to get UPnP functionality to work 100% of the time.
There are a lot of options for streaming from PC. The easiest I've used so far is ES file explorer and MX video player. Just go to LAN in ES and stream via smb. MX streams/plays all the formats I have thrown at it.
If you have a custom rom with a kernel supporting cifs, you could try cifs manager. It create a shared folder on a specified location. It works great for music too. I can even scan my network shared music library with the stock music player (or other) by creating a shared folder on the sd-card.

For movies, I also recommend MovieBrowser HD, a nice front end that scan your movie library and fetch covers and descriptions, opens with your fav movie player.

Same here, es file explorer and mx or dice works great.
I'd second Diceplayer in a heartbeat if I could actually buy the full version. The trial played everything I threw at it including 720p avi and mkv files.
I just used File Manager HD to browse to folder and BS player to stream, very easy.
I tried a VLC app and it worked pretty well. Just make sure its not the remote app.

I was going to buy the full version but its saying the account is locked or something?
I'm going to spend this weekend trying all the suggestions - thanks
I ran into the same issue. I ended up giving BS Player a shot and it handled 720p mkv and avi files like a dream. Granted, it was playing them off an external HDD, but it's definitely worth a download.
Yes I think that FM HD is the best for LAN connection over wi-fi and xm player. But mx player cannot read subtitles from network drive.
Serviio for the pc (dlna server java software) and skifta on your A500.

How to view videos on my pc over wifi network on my xoom

Can anyone tell me the best way to view files, video(movies),pics, music over y wifi network. I've tried various apps like upnp along with mobo player and codec add on but it only plays certain files most of my media is not accesable.
I used to use a laptop and watch everything perfectly from my pc downstairs using the windows library share if only was as easy with my xoom. when i try to acces the library the xoom see's the library but only short video content of all my video camera clips nothing is organized as is on my pc. Please help as there doesnt seem to be any info anywhere, Thanks.
Assuming your server is a Windows PC then your best bet is to share the folders your content is kept in then use ES File Explorer to access the network shares. Just opening the files will stream them over wifi for you. I use Dice Player but I'm sure other players work just as well.
(There are also other file explorers out there, I'm just advocating ES because I know it works with streaming).
I can't thank you enough as es explorer is just what i was looking for as it shows my files from my windows pc as a laptop would.
The only problem i have now is that it wont open my movie files when i go to these files i get a message 'login failure this may be caused by : -the account has no permissions, any advice would be great thanks andy.
Fofgot to mention i can play all my music , pics, and smaller vieo clips which is a lot more than before it's just the files with my movies in that i cant access without the above error message.
Yes !!
for me i use this:
- PS3 Media server on my Computer (share all media from your computer to all devices by network wifi/lan)
and i can play simultany on my play3 & Xoom
-Skifta on my Xoom (DLNA client/server) it does both
-DICE Player (play mkv 720p) only who work fine (but it's paying)
but i've used before MOBOPLAYER who work fine too but no sound in mkv
MX Video PLayer it's ok too
I still get the error message when i try to play my movies some are avi and some mkv but i dont even get as far as seeing the video file , i dont get passed opening the movie file itself, surely someone out there knows please help. Also i looked on google and apparently if you turn off the anonymous function and use a user name and password from my pc it will work but where do you find the username and password as i didnt realise i had one on my pc.
As I told someone else, plex media server plus the android app works like a dream if you have all your movies/tv shows in one spot.

This will probably be because of Windows file or share permissions. In ES File Explorer, you can edit the server properties and put in your Windows username and password. It may also require the domain field to be filled in, which if it's just a normal home PC and not connected to a domain, would be your PC's hostname.
P.S... use the thanks button
I use ES Explorer for streaming from my server while on my home network and Plex for streaming when I'm on a different network (i.e. 4G, someone elses WiFi).
Zumocast.
There is a version floating around on the xda forums that is compatible with the xoom.
Nobody here mentioned it and I don't know why.
It allows you to stream and download files from your computer over any network.
It's speed is dependant on your connection.
Best of all. It's free
Stop reading and download it.

im still trying to figure this. I run Nero media home on my server and my ps3 and n900 pick it up fine, anything on my xoom doesn't see it.
PS3 Media Server
I use PS3 Media Server and the free UPnPPlay app on my Xoom (as well as other Android devices), and RockPlayer Lite to watch the video, which works great.
PS3 MS is very configurable so I can use it to serve up videos to the TV, PS3, Xoom or other Androids at home, at varying levels of video quality, all from the one Windows box.
I use Skifta. Its free - just install on both PC and xoom. Simple config and uses your favorite player

zumacast works fine
I would second that suggestion about zumacast. It works fine on the xoom.
I use Es Explorer just add your pc like server, not able to play 1080 but 720 play really smooth

Why not just use File Manager HD it supports SMB
create a shortcut to your smb share
and install bs player or something
Thats how i do it
even though i have upnp servers in the house
Qloud is free and works over wifi and 3g/4g.....amazing program

video streaming on note..

what app do u guys use? I use vlc direct pro. Tried plex also.
Vlc used to work but for some reason it wont anymore.
Plex is way picky and the results were pixeli.
Any tips? I used to have this stream server on my pc to watch on iphone. It was called streamtome. Very easy to setup and very stable. Great for watching movies even outside your network.
Is there any similar app for android?
PS: necermind. Found an app called Emit. Runs perfect
I am using BS Player on my network and it has been working very well.
Are you running the Emit server on your PC?
I have a Samba share on my home network and have been wondering what's the best way for my Note to stream from that over WiFi... anyone know if any of the video client/server programs like Emit/VLC/Plex etc can stream directly from Samba?
I doubt it as Android doesn't natively support CIFS, but it's worth asking!
My computer is Linux with smb shares but no special app running other than that. Bs player streams the files with no issues.
ES file explorer.
Just share your folder on your PC or NAS and open the file from the Network tab on ES file explorer.
