Is the homescreen choppy for everyone? - Xoom General

I went to best buy a little while ago and they had a XOOM display sitting all by its lonesome getting no attention, so I went over to play around with it. The apps seemed very snappy, but switching between homescreens and flicking some of the widgets was quite jerky and choppy.
Is this everyone's experience, or was it just that one XOOM?

I haven't had problems with chop. I have noticed very minor stutters with some 3D effects, but they're barely noticeable.

My experience has been buttery smooth man.
No chop

Same here. Everything has been very smooth!

Interesting. I wonder if it was because it had been left on since 10am.
I even starting trashing widgets from the home screens until all that was left was a few app buttons. Didn't help any.

Mine is fine. The only thing I have noticed it that the screen rotation is slow.

Screen rotation has always been slow on Android. Doesn't bother me.

Screen rotation on my infected evo is very fast. Almost too fast. Just Ned to wait for virus to make xoom roms. Won't happen but would be nice

It's choppy/jittery for me using Dolphin Browser. I'm still playing with the thing, so I don't know what else is doing it.

When I put my Xoom in portrait mode, it is laggy for sure 100%, but in landscape is smooth.
Anyone else seeing this?

It's normal, Dolphin isn't yet accelerated by the GPU, like the Chrome browser.

Pretty smooth for me, I noticed a bit of choppiness, but it appears to be random.

I wonder if the demo unit at Best Buy is different. I know that it lost wifi connection with Best Buy's routers while I was there. I asked someone about this and they said it had something to do with the demo unit. Whether that was true or not, IDK, but it worked perfect with tethered to my phone over Wifi.

Stutter in screen scrolling

Right now with all the new kenels with have manage to approach 60fps. But it will never be smooth enough if we dont get the stutter fix.
Before u begin and say that your phone does not have the stutter, well it does. The problem is at any window such has contact if u swipe u get a very smooth scrolling but if you hold your finger and scroll very slowly u will see microstutter and not a smooth scrolling.
Im not sure if this has been posted before and dont know if it might be the screen or actual Os
Im holding the zune hd & iphone. Both device does not suffer from this microstutter

And I agree with OP. I knew I wasn't the only one who noticed this. When flicking through homescreens on launcher pro (or even sense) the scrolling is completely smooth. When you hold your finger on the screen and move it, it stutters and makes very tiny jumps. It's not appealing. It's great we've been able to crack the 30fps limit despite HTC's unhelpful attitude. I think the next step would be to get rid of the stuttering.
I have the same exact issue and have noticed this from day one. It's quite annoying. I thought the fix for fps would stop it, but I was wrong. I've tried to ignore it, but such a thing cannot be ignored by my eyes. It's noticeable every time and more annoying each time.

I have been bothered by this since day one also. its the only negative thing a colleague of mine (blackberry user) has to say when he compares iphone to evo. its there wether you notice or not
When "slowly" dragging my finger to change screens I see that initial stutter but I'm not seeing the "jumping." Or is it that initial stutter?
Usually flicking through the screens as fast as my finger can go and it looks smooth as a babies .... bowel movement.

it won't be noticeable until you have an iphone or zune hd, who ever saids that it's not there is because they have not notice it at all. i have use all fresh roms and still have it.
Go to a website or to contacts and swipe to scroll, you will see a very butter smooth scrolling. Have a iphone on hand and do the same, you'll that the smoothness is about the same. Now grab the screen with your finger and slowly without let in go of the finger scroll up or down. You'll see a microstutter which is very obvious when you compare it to a OS like iphone or Zune HD (and from video do not see it in wm7). Is very annoying. I have the iphone 4g next to me and can tell you that the scrolling between home screens are about the same smoothness wise (using launcher pro with king's kenel #8). But the microstutter is so obvious between devices that is to hard not to notice.
like i said, i'm not sure if this is due to the screen or what, i'll try it on my sister nexus but is good that could take a development look into this problem aswell.
Maybe a nova/epson difference. Because my nova does not stutter.

Honestly have to say I forgot what the sense contacts evn look like..if even different from aosp cm6...but if memory serves it is slightly and I get a smooth scroll. Went to some image heavy sites and notices that pictures sorta pixelate a bit when slowly scrolling but text bodies and links scroll smooth when inching along. Using dolphin HD over stock if that counts for anything. Like I said I see a slight stutter on homescreens initially but it scrolls smooth and as said maybe the aosp isn't giving me issues. Not sure?

i have tried CM6 and still there. It will always be smooth with any rom, even more with cm6, but this is something else. Is something with how the screen detects the scrolling touch while holding it.
like i said before, you'll not really notice it much until you see an iphone and compare both side by side. Then you'll see the problem i'm talking about.
as a previous iPhone user, this was the first thing I noticed when I got the phone. the scrolling just isn't as smooth.

Did my Xoom just get faster?!

I picked up the Xoom on launch day and I've been pretty content with it so far, but I won't hide the fact that the device has a lot of random laggy moments, stutters, and glitches. Opening the app drawer looked like it was at 10fps, scrolling through the home screens would lag quite often, etc.
I don't know what happened, but after I just went into the android market to update my applications I swear my Xoom got a speed increase. Going through homescreens is super snappy now, it was never this smooth before. The app drawer looks great when you open/close it now, and everything just seems so snappy now. I was getting a little annoyed by all the home screen lag and random stutters, especially with a dual core processor that just shouldn't happen. I know other users have reported lag as well, has anyone else recently noticed a speed increase?

Since its that then im willing to bet that you had an app that was (before update) making your xoom seem slower than it should. Now that the app was updated, Xoom runs smoother. Thats my guess.

One application can hijack your Xoom and hose it up. All it takes is one....
I also noticed the lag, and mine is gone now too. When I added my google account, all the apps from my phone were loaded onto my Xoom, plus it was downloading all of my picasa web pics. It was cool, but way too much going on and it installed way too many apps that were probably not cool with honeycomb.
I removed all of the apps and rebooted, and things run perfectly now.
I agree with horsexd. I haven't really felt much lag...well besides in the accelerometer which I think was intended.
I noticed a drop in lag after restarting after initial boot.

I have found that once I got more comfortable with the xoom, I was going straight to what I needed. Not clicking too many things and going back because I meant to open something else.
I have the same experience on my phone.
Hmm. I've been in the market for the past 30 minutes and nothing has changed for me.
Rebooting my XOOM.
The honeycomb boot screen seems to be a bit faster.
[edit] I call shenanigans. The app screen is still choppy when I hit the apps drawer button.
Seems the same to me. Aside from pulling up the app drawer, it's been pretty snappy since I got it.
whenever mine gets turned on, the little honeycomb looking animation is usually choppy. I think once it ran smooth, but it was uber choppy on this first turn on.
I haven`t restarted my xoom but once since I got it and its blazing fast all the time.

Very disappointed

I'm pretty disappointed in the Xoom so far. My Droid X seems to perform better than it, despite it's single core. Is there hope for the following issues? I don't want to return my Xoom, but I'm just a tad upset spending so much on it...
These are the problems I'm having:
Slow downs using YouTube app
Slow downs on home screens and app drawer
Poor browser performance on all browsers (speed, display, text input)
Video recording and playback is choppy/unreliable
Bluetooth tether to Droid X is hit and miss (WiFi works fine)
Volume buttons are darn near impossible to use (lol)
I realize these are all software issues, and CAN be fixed, but does it seem likely? I know the G1 still has development going on and just want to get the most out of this mammoth.
I hate to say it, but I think there might be something wrong with your XOOM since I have experienced none of those problems. Perhaps it needs a factory reset or something?
I definitely agree regarding the volume buttons though, very frustrating to use! Thankfully you only have to hit either one once and then you can control the slider on screen.

Only problem I have from your list is youtube HD playback. Rest is perfectly fine.
I've found the Xoom to be sluggish at places, even after factory resets. I do think it's a software problem as my O2X (same Tegra chip) isn't slow at all.
Overall it feels like Honeycomb was a bit rushed, and that some things could use a bit more performance tuning.
I think this may be some issue with your device hardware. I got no such slowdowns on my xoom. I concur sometimes youtube hd playback can be sluggish, but it depends on the wifi you're connectrd to speed.

mine works fine except hd videos in youtube. disable the hd once u can n it will be fast. u can try a factory reset too
one question: How long have you had your xoom?
The reason I ask is for the first couple days after i got my xoom I was AMAZED by how much slower it was than my EVO. After a couple days though it seemed to smooth out and pick up speed.
Overall I'm less impressed with the xoom than I expected to be but I would recommend to any new xoom owner to reserve forming any opinions about it until it sees at least a couple days use.
I guess I'll ride it out for a few more days. I've had it about 4 days. I'll likely go play with a display and see what I get.
Have you flashed a new kernel? The latest tiamat kernel is (in my experience) smoother then stock (and has SD support). But the main thing is wait a few more days for the slowness to stop.
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
also you might want to take it back and exchange it i had a bad power button and a few of the problems you have stated in your post so i took mine back and exchanged. Second one worked great and fine so i decided to keep my xoom and root it.
Never had any of those issues listed either. Might want to try the Tiamat kernal and see if that helps out.
Maybe a lemon. Go back to exchange it. Mine is working kicking ass.
OK, so I installed the 1.4.1 Tiamat kernel and wiped data. She seems to be running much better now. The typing in web pages is still a little slow, but I no longer get repeated letters when typing quickly. That was a big problem. I'm much happier, but some things are still a little slow. Looks like things could get better. Thanks for the help. If it's still slow next week after no wipes I'll exchange it as suggested.

I noticed the same thing. I rooted as soon as it was available and even with OC it just wasn't smooth. I couldn't get a single live wallpaper to run without slowing the Xoom to a crawl. Then last night I flashed the latest Tiamat kernel and its like a brand new Xoom!
I was going to go back to factory to see if that was the issue, but instead I tried the kernel first. So the two things I did was flash Clockwork recovery and flashed the Tiamat kernel (which cleared cache and Dalvik cache). Whatever it was, its awesome and I have been downloading all the live wallpapers just cause I can!
Mine was a little slow as well and seemed to balance out. Still not as smooth as my Evo for video though, which is depressing. I really expected to see updates by now to fine-tune things.
The silicone cover from Moto completely resolves the volume button issues by making them more prominent and easy to find.

I even tried to OC to 1.5Ghz but then I changed back to 1Ghz cause it was unnecessary. Maybe you should ask moto to check if there's anything wrong with ur xoom or even get you another one .

So, how stable/responsive is Honeycomb on the Tab?

Hey everyone. I'm planning on getting the Tab, and I was wondering if Honeycomb is decently stable and responsible on the Tab, as I understand from some of the posts here that Honeycomb is still a bit beta-y.
Namely:
-Does it play YouTube videos fine?
-Do apps force close often?
-Is there a lot of lag on the device?
Thanks in advance for any answers.
I've had mine for approx 24 hours (and have barely put it down).
No force closes, no lag to speak of, and every app I've installed has worked. Maybe the benefit of low expectations, or being used to a Vibrant, but Honeycomb is awesome.
The only thing I've run into: I have a very strong wifi connection, and at least 3 or 4 times in Gmail and the market, it says "no connection-retry?"
Every time I retry it connects.
Anyway, that's my perspective after a whole day, for what it's worth.
Youtube is excellent.
-Does it play YouTube videos fine?
I've seen a few catches here and there. Nothing to completely turn me away.
-Do apps force close often?
I've only had issues with one app and reinstalled it no probs after that.
-Is there a lot of lag on the device?
I've noticed a small amount of lag. Especially with the stock launcher. I'm not surprised because most of the stock devices that I've played around with have had the same small lag.
I've also noticed that a lot more apps stay running on the tablets. That can't help with the lag.
I'm personally can't wait for the voodoo lagfix to hit kernels.
It's a great device. Honeycomb is a bit buggy. If you run some apps that aren't optimized for it, it force closes at times.
If you can handle that, it's a great device.
Cool, everything sounds good. Can't wait to get my Tab now!
Got 10.1 retail 16gb with 3.1, unlocked from Frys yesterday. Auto installed all of my applications, total of 100+ from Market & Amazon through HTC Thunderbolt 4G LTE hot spot within minutes. I have Samsung 7" tab since last thanksgiving. Works everything, loves it. A keeper for me.
I just got my GT 10.1 yesterday and thus far I am very happy. Runs smooth and seems stable in my (limited) experience.

I think this "lag" should be fixed with the 3.2 update which is due on xoom in next few weeks - it has "improved hardware acceleration"

I've had a a few issues with apps force closing on me, and a couple of instances of slight lag in the interface as well, but overall I really like this device. Form factor is nice, screen is great and battery life is phenomenal.
I think the few issues with the 10.1 will be fixed in time - either by Samsung/Google or third party developers - so I'm not terribly worried. In the case that they aren't, these issues are slight and do not occur regularly so I can easily live with them - even if I shouldn't have to.

The original Voodoo lagfix for Galaxy S phones was used to convert the filesystem on the device to EXT3/4 from lackluster RFS, from what I am reading and experiencing Samsung is using EXT3 filesystem on the Tab, so the lagfix is pointless.
Kernel tweaks and fine tuning of the Honyecomb when the source becomes available should address the lag issues if ever.
Supercurio won't need to do the lagfix needed for the Galaxy S devices, but he may still have a few filesystem tweaks and whatnot to contribute that will give a small (possibly negligible) boost to performance on the Tab. He did that for the Nexus S, even though the Nexus S used EXT4.

Very same thing happens to me. My Xoom or Transformer never did this, and my Nook Color and Galaxy S Vibrant also never had issues with my wifi connection.
So I thought it might have been a hardware problem, also because I hadn't seen anyone mention it on this board. I returned my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and got a replacement. The replacement is doing it too. So I am now guessing it might be software.
Glad to see at least I'm not the only one having this problem. Haha.
Honeycomb runs real smooth on my Galaxy Tab. Though I have noticed a few hiccups, these include:
1) Sometimes it doesn't recognize that I have headphones plugged in, I have to reboot the tablet then it works fine. Not exactly a huge issue for me as I don't use headphones that often and it hasn't done it a lot.
2) If you have the keyboard dock, they are like oil and water. The tablet automatically goes into Clock mode and won't come out. You have to toy around with setting a different default keyboard, keep docking and undocking the tablet and even test with docking it with the screen off vs with the screen on to get it to recognize that keyboard as a keyboard and stop putting the device in Clock mode with no keyboard functionality. I haven't quite figured out a single method that works every time, but once you get it working that keyboard makes things so much easier to work with when typing a lot!
3) There is some lag with the interface, but nothing too bad. The worse lag is with typing. With or without the keyboard, the typing lag is horrendous and it's the only lag on this system that actually bugs me.
4) There is the occasional wake-up jam. This isn't tablet specific, but Android specific... when your device just won't wake up and you have to hold the power key for 15 seconds then release and hold again for a few seconds and the device will reboot. This has happened to me twice after charging overnight. In the morning the screen won't come on and I have to hold the power button, release then hold again and the device will power up. Fully charged.
I am hoping these are fixed with the official Samsung release with the TouchWiz overlay. I am thoroughly happy with the galaxy tab 10.1 and do not regret my purchase in any way, shape, or form. Bugs are to be expected, but for a device as expensive as this one it doesn't hurt to hope the manufacturer would address them with the next update...lol.

The YouTube app has been almost flawless for me. I think it did force crash once or twice.
Regarding force closures. There has been big improvements since the days I had a Xoom and Android 3.0. YouTube crashed once, maybe twice. The Browser app crashed once. I don't think Market has crashed yet, but it's still a little quirky.
Most of the force closures seem to be from third party apps that haven't been updated in a while. But I have apps I use daily that never force close. Pulse is rock stable, Opera Mini is rock stable. Just started using News 360 and it seems stable so far. Dropbox very stable.
The Honeycomb launcher is a bit laggy. I'm living with it. I tried alternative launchers like ADW Launcher and Launcher Pro, but I find those two look pretty ugly and the icons get all messed up when I rotate the tablet. I love how the Honeycomb launcher reserves blank space on the wide side of the tablet so icon spacing stays even. I guess I'm a little weird about that.
So far I think my biggest issue is streaming. I really have more trouble with streaming apps on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 than I have with other tablets. Pandora will freeze up when it's in the background too long. TuneIn Pro seems to buffer a lot more on my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Has my wondering if the wifi is that good or if there is some software issue. And I've had some intermittent "no network connection" errors as I mentioned in a previous post.

That ironic. My Atrix does this, and it annoys me to no end (the Atrix has HORRIBLE WiFi connectivity) and in comparison my galaxy tab is fantastic. I connect to WiFi quickly, I get a strong data flow with fast uploads and downloads and no issues with disconnecting from the network.

The really weird thing is that it only seems to happen in the native google apps. The first day I had it, it happened 3 or 4 times, then yesterday not once. I'm just wondering if Comcast was buggy that day. It's been known to happen.
I've had it for nearly two weeks (I am fortunate enough to live in New York so I ran to Best Buy in Union Square before the "official release"). I had a Xoom for awhile, and 3.1 is certainly an improvement.
I am not a power user as far as media goes, I am more email/web browsing/business apps, so I haven't had any major issues with Youtube, it's seemed pretty smooth for me.
The stock browser freezes up when a drop down menu is selected, and there's a long list of choices. Freezes, and closes all windows. Pain in the butt. I don't love any of the browsers on the Market (they all seem to be buggy as well and/or only open in mobile mode), and this is just a problem I'll have to deal with.
I've found that the battery life is good, but not great. Perhaps I have things running in the background that I shouldn't. But I'm not seeing more than about 5-6 hours, and as I mentioned I'm just using email and web browsing for the most part.
Overall, I recommend.
No issues for me outside of the odd program force closing. Google Music did that to me a few times until I updated it.
Stock browser is a little buggy at times. It didn't sync all my bookmarks well. I'm still looking for a good browser. Dolphin HD is alright.
Youtube runs perfectly fine.
Only a few apps force close on the Tab and sometimes the browser force closes, but rarely.
And there's only a slight lag on the home screen. It's barely noticeable but it's less smooth as compared to the iPad. Hopefully, 3.2 will improve the experience.

stutter when scrolling slowly

I've noticed that when making a slow even scroll through any app the movement is kind of jittery/stuttery - kind of like a very rapid screen flicker (but different to the screen issues posted elsewhere as the brightness setting is not a factor). It doesn't happen on any of my other devices. Don't think it's a processor issue as games/videos are flawless. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?
On a side note, white backgrounds seem very yellow (see attachment) - especially compared to my OG transformer. It's not a massive issue and i appreciate this is a budget tablet - just wondering whether this is normal or if it's a fault.
thanks.
I'm seeing some stuttering on Google+ that I really notice.

I get stutter swiping from image to image in QuickPic, some microstuttering in Google+ in the What's Hot section.
Maybe some apps aren't GPU accelerated and the CPU is a bit on the poor side to handle it?

I've noticed that when making a slow even scroll through any app the movement is kind of jittery/stuttery - kind of like a very rapid screen flicker (but different to the screen issues posted elsewhere as the brightness setting is not a factor). It doesn't happen on any of my other devices. Don't think it's a processor issue as games/videos are flawless. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?
On a side note, white backgrounds seem very yellow (see attachment) - especially compared to my OG transformer. It's not a massive issue and i appreciate this is a budget tablet - just wondering whether this is normal or if it's a fault.
thanks.

Have you also noticed that the yellow background is easier on the eyes? It was done on purpose, because this was built primarily as a kindle fire competitor..
As far as the scroll stutter, its Chrome. Try Opera or Dolphin and check back with us. It does the same on mine. Dolphin, Boat, and Opera are better browsers. Try them all out, I think you'll find happiness with one of those!

I also notice it less in the Dolphin HD or Dolphin Mini browser.

Go into developer options and check disable hw overlays

I have a lot of stutter in google play store, chrome and some time in games as well. It happened in dead trigger. plus when am not running any apps in the background and i go to settings, battery i see lot of stuff there like google play, chrome, dolphin browser, picspeed wallpapers and many other stuff as well. and the cracking sound that it makes on my right side of the screen. I opened the back and tightened the screw still no luck still makes noise. i can only think that the back case is making the cracking sound. Plus my jelly bean is not butter smooth like most video i have seen. I was thinking of exchanging it but am thinking if i do that i might get a even worse one. Google really need to give another update soon that fixes some of these problems

Yeah, you might have a point there.

As i said, it's not specific to any particular app, it happens whether in maps, browser, menus etc. unfortunately.
Tried hw overlays; no joy i'm afraid.
This happens everywhere during any slow touchscreen movement because of a crappy touchscreen controller and crappy filtering algorithms. The app is just scrolling to wherever the touchscreen tells it to (which is to random points around your finger tip several times a second) and this makes it look like it's jumping up and down or microstuttering.
