Flash custom recovery on an already rooted Aria with clockworks recovery?

is it possible to switch to another custom recovery after I already got clockworks?
I tried unrevoked but its stuck in the reboot (I believe its trying to root my aria again)

not sure what youre trying to do.... i believe Clockwork is the only Recovery for rooted phones. if you want to flash a custom ROM, well that is something else altogether. please be specific as to what you want to flash to the phone. include a link to the flash too

I was trying to flash psfreedom recovery rom from here

I believe the method on that website was for unrooted arias without clockworks

To flash a different custom recovery on your Aria, you need to rename the zip file LIBEIMG.ZIP on the SD card and boot in HBOOT (Power on the phone by holding down VOL DOWN and the Power Button). When it boots to the HBOOT screen you should see text stating that it found LIBEIMG.ZIP and is installing it.

I'm curious, what recovery are you talking about?

thanks for including the link. the instructions are clear.... Root IS required, Clockwork recovery is recommended, the Freedom Aria flash appears to be a custom ROM.
once the phone is Rooted, boot into Recovery, make a Nandroid backup, and flash downloaded zip file from SD card.
if you need help Rooting, there is all sorts of good methods available on this site. I use the Unrevoked method myself, but it works best on Linux or Mac OS

hmm I think you are looking at the old method which is a custom rom
The new one is a custom recovery which brings me to the question as I dont think you can flash a custom recovery in the clockwork custom recovery.

its possible im looking at the wrong thing, but far as i can tell it states "Recovery Custom ROM" which is totally different from Custom Recovery ROM

I have similar questions. I was trying to update my version of clockwork also using unrevoked again, but couldn't get it to work. I guess my questions are:
1. Is there any benefit in updating to a newer version of clockwork? My current version is 2.0.x.x and I believe the latest one is 2.5.0.4.
2. Will this same method work to do so? Can I rename the latest clockwork .zip file like this and get it updated?
I thought using the flash clockwork option in ROM Manager would do it, but it doesn't. If I reboot from ROM Manager it goes to the newer version, but if I reboot otherwise it goes to my original. The couple times I've used it, there appears to be maybe some different features/options in the newer one and I feel like I might be missing out on something!

What's the difference with this recovery?

These are probably two different things. once you got the recovery rom flashed you can upgrade it in recovery mode (hence its different from original clockwork recovery)

Ok bro, I didn't see much info about it so I'm gonna take your word for it.
@brswattt, far as I can tell this is " basically" used for jailbreaking the ps3.

you can use unrEVOked to flash the new recovery. if youre a Windows user, download the unrEVOked tool and run the .exe as Administrator. also make sure there are no conflicting s/w on the PC such as HTC Sync and you have all the drivers installed(HBoot, ADB drivers, etc.)

This still isn't working for me. Everything appears to go well at the start, then I get:
Waiting for root...(safe to restart if this doesn't work)
At which point the only way I can restart is to pull my battery. After doing so, it reboots and I get:
This was a triumph
It is not, however, any such thing. After another minute I get this:
Internal error: couldn't find misc.
So I've still got my original version of clockwork, 2.0.1.3, despite the fact that ROM Manager is telling me I have 2.5.0.1. I'm obviously missing something here.
BTW, if it matters I'm running CM 6.1.0

Although there is a ClockworkMod 2.5.0.4 version, I don't think it is for the Aria. According to ClockworkMod ROM Manager, 2.5.0.1 is the most current one for the Aria so I am believing what ROM Manager is telling me since it is written by the same the vendor.

and FR001 RC1
all no go. I think it has something to do with the phone already been rooted and has clockworks installed which makes unrevoked unhappy

OK, let's start from the beginning. You asked about installing an alternate recovery (PSFreedom recovery), but apparently it has its own installation procedure that needs to be run on an unrooted Aria.
What you need is to find just the PSFreedom recovery and copy it to your SD called in a file called LIBEIMG.ZIP and that is how you need to install it on a root phone that has ClockworkMod. Perhaps you need to go back to the PSFreedom thread and ask if a LIBEIMG.ZIP can be produced that can be flashed from HBOOT to replace ClockworkMod.

Well, I tried flashing CM7 Alpha #39 after getting Clockwork 3.0.0.1 and kept getting stuck on a boot loop. I went back to stock and flashed build #40 and now my Mytouch is stuck on the screen showing "T-Mobile Mytouch 4g" I've tried everything even flashing back to the first nanroid I made and nothing. I've waited for over 16 minutes and it hasn't gone past that screen. Does anyone have any clue what I should do? I'm not going to sleep till I fix it.....

you should try to update the clockwork to a higher version

U need cw recoveries 2.x exp. 2.512 to flash anything 2.2 n the 3.x r ONLY used for gingerbreads...u cant go back 2 stock on gingerbread recoveries so flash the 2.x...hope that helps...im tired hope u can understand me

Is that possible with me only having access to the hboot screen and he recovery screen?

From hboot you should be able to get into fastboot. With fastboot you can flash recoveries, nandroids, and images all via adb.

What would be the 2.x I need? I kind of got how to do adb I just don't know what file I need to use.

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to read it twice two get it, but once I did I knew what to do. I got to be more careful.

How were you able to download and install ClockworkMod 3.x? When I installed it via ROM Manager, it automatically installed 2.x without an option for anything newer.

U have to do it thru fastboot or terminal on your phone, but I could never get it to work on my phone. Flashed easily thru fastboot for me.

Yes fastboot is very simple to use as long as you have your adb set up correctly.
1.Place the recovery.img in the "tools" folder of sdk
2. Navigate to sdk-tools folder, open command prompt here
3. Reboot into fastboot/bootloader (either through adb or holding power down and volume down)
4. Fastboot devices, and flash the recovery.... basic steps

I got a brand new Nexus S, I got a update direct from Google so I just flash it to GRJ22 :-(. I follow your guide (I have to do the step 1/2 in the other post you refer). Now I got clockwork done. But everytime I restart my phone, I always boot into clockwork. I try to 'mount sdcard' and reboot, but still boot into clockwork. How can I boot into the stock ROM?

Too complicated.
Just:
1. turn on phone by holding volume up + power to go to bootloader
2. fastboot oem unlock (confirm it on the phone)
3. fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img
4. Select recovery on the phone.
5. You're in ClockworkMod. Go flash a new ROM.

Let me answer myself.
I don't think the latest rom 2.3.4 is compatible with the clockwork you supplied. So I have to flash my phone back to GRH78. I downloaded the stock ROM from the internet. and then push all the images file into /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2010.xxx.
Next, I restore the image in clockwork menu.
after restore, reboot the phone, now I am back in business.
When the phone is boot, i lost the root again, so i went to modaco.com and get Paul's package. run it, restart, I got the root.
Finally, go to market place and get ROM Manager, install the clockwordmod. and I have a 'proper' phone.
although I don't have the least rom, at least i got a working phone that is rooted.

Wow, why risk messing up your phone with flashing a boot.img when you can just rename /etc/install-recovery.sh to something like /etc/install-recovery.bak?
Here's one way to rename (courtesy of Matridom). Another is to use Root Explorer.

This is a totally unorthodox way to make the custom recovery permanent. If your phone is messed up, good luck fixing it.
There is a much easier and safer way like I mentioned.
PS: flashing recovery for 2.3.4 is the exact same as for 2.3.3!

I hope that the problem you mention wont persist anymore

I am sorry but not all people can successfully use Command Prompt to do so.
I cant use command prompt, as it says "Image cant be loaded".
So I had to use this method.
I search around the forum and seen this as a quite common problem,
so I decided to share it

Wow people like to make things complicated. Why install an entire rom to get ride of a script?
if you can flash cwm, you should have some basic understanding of fastboot, adb and the search options in the forums. the answers are all there already.

No disrespect, I agree flashing recoverys should only be done after you understand how to use the tools to do it. there is no reason someone who is going to mod systems on their nexus shouldn't be able to use fastboot and adb properly. all the right drivers are in the sdk.

This is what I did.
I rooted my NS, which had 2.3.3
Used phone with stock 2.3.3 until I figured out which ROM I want to flash.
Before I flashed any ROM, did a Nandroid Backup through CWM.
Used the ROM for a few days, but when I saw that official update is ready for download for i9020A, did do a restore from the Nandroid backup I created.
Updated from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4, phone works fantastic, video chat also works great.
After update when I tried using any of the apps required SU permission, they didn't work. I tried installing a couple of .apk files, couldn't either install it or after installation it didn't work.
Thought let me try wiping my phone clean and start all over again, may be I will use a custom ROM again, downloaded ROM, went to ROM Manager to reboot into recovery, nothing happens.
Tried booting into Recovery option manually by pressing Volume Up and Power button, nothing happens but the Bot with an Arrow appears on screen.
So, I thought I will follow this procedure to reflash CWM to my phone and get it going. I was able to use the command FastBoot once, and suceeded pushing .img file to my phone but now whenever I try using the commands from my computer, this error message appears : "This application has failed to start becasue AdbWinApi.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
Why this error message if I have the sdk on my computer already through which I was once able to push .img file without any troubles?
Can anyone tell me what would be a possible solution?
Also, how can I fix this problem and get ClockWorkMod Recovery installed on my NS again?
How can I get stock recovery image on my phone if I want start all over again from scratch?

My phone now default boots into CWM 3.0.2.4
Recovery boots to a newer recovery I flashed.
How do I get my phone to default boot into the OS again?
Edit: nevermind, just downloaded the full 2.3.4 rom, extracted and flashed the original boot.img.

After installing the sdk and a platform, I have adb, but where is fastboot?

I was getting the same error as "Image cant be loaded". after hours of struggling I found that It's only because I was not in the same directory as the img file. silly eh?

just tried this method of window7 (thanks for the work) with cwm 3.0.2.4, but got the same result like the others in this thread: cant boot the android 2.3.4, the system is always booting into the cwm, no way out.
I don't think this tool works as it should.

I didn't realize that window7's tool would install the cwm into the boot-partition instead of the recovery-partition.
To get my boot partition back I downloaded the 2.3.4 firmware image from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062 and extracted the boot.img from the zip.
with "fastboot flash boot boot.img" I restored my orginal boot partition an can boot into android again.
(fastboot is part of the android sdk)

Try this link. If you click on the folder (baseband number) for the ROM you are interested in you may find an update.zip package. You can flash that with StreakMod Recovery. I would not suggest doing this to change a ROM, only to re-flash what you already have, if needed.

Are these .zips pre-rooted?
My Streak doesn't seem to like any custom ROMS. I can't get any stability, no matter what I try.
351 didn't flash via Streakmod recovery.
Do I need to flash the Dell recovery for 351 to go back?

The stock roms are not pre-rooted.
Read this: Radimus’s Universal Guide to Flashing a ROM
Best way to revert to stock 351:
Grab MultiRecovery Flasher
Download the 351 .pkg file from the Streak Wiki
Put the 351 .pkg file on the root of your Streak's external sd card and rename to update.pkg
Use MRF to flash the 351 recovery
Use MRF to reboot the phone
Do not let it reboot completely, as the phone starts to reboot hold both volume buttons to go directly into recovery
Select #2 to apply the 351 update.pkg
When it completes the install and the phone reboots you will be back to stock. If you want to root I recommend the superboot.zip method, and don't forget to install busybox and update the superuser bin and app files from the superuser app.
Make sure that your read and understand Radimus’s Universal Guide to Flashing a ROM. I also recommend reading this.
Edit: superuser.zip includes busybox.

just a small question here, what Baseband are you on? cuz what you're seemingly up to requires additional baseband flashing through Fastboot-commands or the MF flashing assistant mentioned earlier within the Development Area of Dell Streak at XDA.
Please do note that you're request could be moved towards another forum, due to the fact that it doesn't relate to any 'real' development, no offense, but it is what it is.

Yeah, I'm sorry. Perhaps the mods could move it to the Questions section.
I thought I posted it there. My mind is fried after spending two days on this.
Coming from stock 351 with stock baseband.
Tried to flash 1.9.1 via streakmod, now I got nothing but looping boot screens.
Tried a couple other custom ROMs too via streakmod, but nothing worked. Nothing.
Trying to flash back to stock. Now, I can get the stock 351 recovery on, but that's it.
The dell recovery sticks at a blank screen.
I'm about ready to chuck it. I've never been so frustrated by any flashing process in my life. HD2, Vibrant, Galaxy, you name it. They were all cake compared to the Streak.

The best way to get the baseband you need on the Streak is to flash the stock rom associated with that baseband. That makes sure that all of the OS parts that aren't replaced by StreakDroid or another custom ROM are in sync.

If I can get into fastboot, then all hope is not lost, correct?
Is there a guide to flashing back to stock 2.2.2 anywhere that you know about?
So far, I had stock recovery, went to Streakmod recovery, then back to stock after my flashing didn't turn out well.
No offense to the chef's but I just can't seem to find a way to make any custom ROM work with my Streak.
I'd just love to be back where I started and any help would be greatly appreciated.
The searches I've done have turned up stock Donut re-flashes. I don't want that.
So rar, recovery for both Streakmod AND 351 hangs on a black screen after selecting "Software upgrade via Update.pkg on SD Card" in the menu
No Dell Logo appears at all. I get a black screen (backlight on, just black). Since I get no logo, I'm not presented with the Recovery Menu
I'm burned out.

After I get the recovery flashed and reboot with both vol buttons held down... select update and I get a blank screen. Nothing.
I think my Streak is a paperweight.

Once in recovery hit the power or camera button ...to pop up the menu

Just to follow up on my own post.
The problem was caused by having a stray file named update.pkg in my sd card at root level.
This hosed everything, literally, so recovery was not an option under any circumstances, even though it was flashed. I still got a black screen at startup, no matter what... even when pressing the correct button sequence as noted. I just didn't get to the Dell logo where the camera button would get me recovery.
I had to use QDLTool3rd to reinstall EVERYTHING and then I could install Dell recovery and flash.
Now, I'm rooted and restoring from backup.

[TUT] Getting a clean 4.1.1 Experience - Steps to Flash Stock 4.0.4 and then 4.1.1

First up, let me tell you that doing this is not necessay to get the OTA or having a smooth JB experience. The JB OTA installs without a wipe which means the data is preserved.
UPDATE: Google has put up the full image for 4.1.1 [i9023, i9020a and i9020t] . Now you do not need to clean flash ICS and then JB. Follow the part 1 of the guide below and flash the JB image instead of ICS. Nothing more to it.

That being said, I wanted to have the real stock image on my Nexus S and then Upgrade to JellyBean. Below are the steps that I took.
Go to this GoogleAndroidImages page and download the appropriate image for your phone & download. Since mine is an international version a.k.a I9023, I chose that ROM.
The download will be a tar.gz file. Use a utility like 7Zip to uncompress it. The tar.gz will have a .tar file inside and the /tar file will have a folder. Extract the folder to your PC. For my download, the folder was named soju-imm76d
Next Steps will wipe your phone, completely
Reboot your phone into bootloader mode.
Open a command prompt, navigate to the folder in step 2.
Enter the below commands, the image file names are for my download, modify it to the file names in your folder before running (I assume that you have fastboot working)
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-crespo-i9020xxkl1.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio-crespo-i9020xxki1.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot -w update image-soju-imm76d.zip​
After the last step, the phone reboots and takes you to the initial setup screen.
Additionally, I reflashed CWM and the the JellyBean OTA along with superuser. Below are the steps for that
Download the OTA from google server. This thread by oldblue910 is kept updated with the latest updates. Currently it has OTA's for I9023 and I9020A
Download the superuser from androidsu website. This is the RC version 3.2
Download the latest clocworkmod recovery touch-version non-touch-version
For simplicity sake, put all the files downloaded at a single folder
Reboot phone into bootloader mode.
Open a command prompt and go to the folder in step 4.
Now execute this fastboot command to flash the CWM recovery. Change the filename to the file you have downloaded.
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-6.0.0.7-crespo.img​
Now using the vol down key choose to go to recovery.
There, using the options, navigate to the install zip from sdcard and first install the OTA and then the superuser zip file.
Reboot. You now have rooted JB
PS: I additionally did a fastboot oem lock and fastboot oem unlock back to back to wipe my sdcard too

Whats the difference/benefits between ur "way" and just flashing JB zip with proper clean install?

Because if you're not on stock 4.0.4 image, you cannot flash the OTA zip. You get a Status 7 error.
This isn't "his" way. It's the official Google way if you go to the Google site to download stock images.

I think this was the exact way I did it as well:thumbup: I must have skipped one step during the process though because my "SD" didn't get wiped.

The OTA is essentially an upgrade, it builds atop the existing ICS 4.0.4 rom. I had so much mods on top of my rom that I wasnted to have a clean start. Besides, there has been multiple reports of an error 7 in case of non stock or certain moded roms.

Thanks for the tutorial. Thinking of doing the update this way. I have a i9020a rooted with 4.0.4 and when I try to do OTA update I got signature verification error in CWM 5.8.0.2.
For the wipe, from what I understand, you just execute the lock command above which wipes the SD and then unlock it with the second command? Sorry total newbie on this.

That is exactly what i did when the OTA zip pacage first showed up here on xda. Good guide. Im rocking mine with simple kernel

I followed the first part of the guide to restore to stock, and then did the OTA update. It all went well except one little catch: after the OTA update for 4.1.1, I flashed the CWM 6.0.0.7, and then realize that I forgot to copy the root zip file onto SD. Had to reboot the phone and copy the file over. After that I go into bootload mode again and try to go to recovery, ends up with a red exclaim mark and phone is locked. Had to do a battery pull, restart the phone, and then reflash that CWM image, and immediately after that, go to recovery and do the root zip install. Not sure why is that. Have not tried to do the recovery again but I'm glad that I'm now on JB and rooted. Thanks OP !

When i install the OTA through the phone itself (by letting it restart the phone and install it) i get the exclamation mark.
Im on Stock 4.0.4 and not rootet. Is there anyway to install this OTA without fully wipe it?

The lock command just lock the bootloader, it is the unlock command that will wipe the SD. It will also ask you for a confirmation on your phone's screen...

when you rebooted the phone to copy the su.zip, the OS restored the oroginal recovery. That's why you got the red exclamation mark. To get the CWm, you can flash it again in fast boot, go into recovery and then ask the CWM to reboot.. if it is 6.0.0.7, before reboot it will ask for the recovery to be made overwrite proof (a nice new feature in v6), choose yes and you are good to go..

Status 7 error comes when you have some kind of custom rom or may be some core mod applied to your rom. I am not aware of a way to get this proceed without full wipe: You can try the below though:
1. Flash the stock 4.0.4 for your phone without data wipe (you can wipe the dalvik cache though). This will make sure you are on the "stock".
2. Try the OTA
or you can backup using titanium backup, and then follow my guide. Restore the apps after flashing 4.0.4 and the try OTA.
It will be good it you take a nandroid backup before doing either of the above.

OK, I'm confused now
As I understand, flashing the .img WILL wipe out the apps & data.
However, I have flashed the CM9 nightlies zip multiple times without loosing the data. Here we are dealing with a stock zip, so I am not sure. You can try the zip method after taking a nandroid backup.
