Im trying to find info or better yet a tutorial on how to mainly "port" android, say from a CM nightly over to HD2. I have a bit of experience with coding older motorola phones, so I believe I have the capabilities of learning such a process.
I have read the threads about linux on HD2, and read up on the links that are in it. thats mainly about kernals. nothing about taking an already developed android ROM and making it work w/HD2.
Is there any info that I can read up on, or if anyone wants to give me some info it would be greatly appreciated.
Devs dont really look in the general section do they?
I was wondering if anyone else who is computer illiterate like me is very interested in learning how to create kernels, roms, themes... and anything else under the sun that deals with android software.
Anyone else interested in becoming a dev like those helping us out with froyo and whatnot?
I'm on Google now... I guess I'm looking for help on where to start. Like from square one... any nice guides you brainiacs could show us noobs?
I wouldn't mind teaching myself from the ground up just by reading internet guides - I enjoy both reading and learning.... I could see myself developing stuff for our community as a fun hobby.
If you would like to help me, think of me as an old man who's never owned a cell phone or a computer till now. That's how far back I'd need to go to learn, I have no experience in computer programming at all.
Since I got my fascinate and stumbled across xda, I've just been, well... fascinated with android and the mechanics behind it all. And the great devs that make this possible for our nice little community here!
So... you other noobs and pros out there wanna help each other out by sharing guides and experiences?

Another noob question (hopefully I'll get enough posts here so I can start asking more indepth questions):
I've seen many themes that say "Port" after them. What does that mean? I'm not having luck finding them in the Q&A sections.
Thanks.
Port is generally used to mean it came from something else, such as porting a theme created on one phone to another, or porting an application from, say, iPhone to Android.
I think Port means to take a theme/ROM developed for one device and make it work for another device.
Ok that makes sense. Thanks.
I have done some basic programming in the past, but what knowledge is needed to jump into custom developing, I am not interested in developing apps per say, I am more interested in developing like Cyanogen Group and many of the awesome Devs on here making Kernals, and Custom Roms, etc. I tend to have some free time on my hands lately, and I figure, instead of waiting for everyone else to do the work, maybe I can do some work and contribute.
If you have any information, please point me in the right direction, with tips, advice, videos, and warnings.
Thank you in advance. :good:
Hey man, i too am interested in developing i use eclipse and can do quite a bit of java and im ok with debugging, if you ever have a project you want to start i would be interested in helping. watch videos on steve kondik. cm has quite a few urls. but from what ive been told is get a rom and import it into eclipse and make some changes and put your own stuff up on xda.
check out this screen shot, has the cm urls on it and the video of steve kondik who talks through tips of building cm and how to start and what it takes hope it helps

Thank you, I will check those out. I realize this maybe way over my head, and by the time I can actually program something worthwhile on Android, there will be a Samsung S8 ... lol, but you have to start somewhere, I would like tips by those who have progressed.
I like the idea of simply editing a already made rom, this would be more like tweaking, but at least I could see some action.
maybe you can try to gather a group of 8 more developers, or people who want to learn, and you guys can all create a "circle" on google plus, and do a Google hangout where you can verbally talk with each other, ask questions, and share your desktop so others can see you working/creating a rom, so that way, all 9 of you future devs will have a visual and audio learning experience. that's the fastest/best way to learn and progress. so if you're interested, post your google plus profiles and people who are interested can post their profiles and everyone who is interested in doing this can add each other and make it happen. i personally have no interest in developing/creating roms. just throwing this great tool out there for those who are interested. Maybe a new pioneering team, will form out of this? maybe a cyanogenmod equivalent, or a team kang equivalent.
My suggestion is to learn to theme first. Theme something that isn't dependant on 9.pngs cause those are a bit more complicated. Building custom Roms is fun, but very detailed and time consuming. After you get the theming down, cut a stock Rom up a bit and theme it and presto, custom Rom. I learned from a thread by theimpaler. I think it was called, "so you want to learn to theme".

So I had a little idea. Ive seen a lot of people asking for updates to our note 10.1 also a lot of us have interests in pac, cm11, etc... so I thought it could be interesting to talk about how or if there is anyway possible to get our fave apps working on these roms.
Of course it would be totaly hypothetical as touchwiz and snote are all proprietary apps and even if we woild solve the questions we could NEVER publish a rom anyway but couldnt it be an interesting discussion as to if it can be done and how it could be done...
I'm no developer by a long shot but its something I'm interested in learning about...
So what are your thoughts, opinions etc...
