Android running slow :( - G2 and Desire Z General

I don´t think im the only one who experienced that problem. If i install a new rom, the rom is smooth as butter. But if i use it a few days, it starts to lag. I tried the most Launcher (ADW, ADW EX, Stock, Launcher Pro, and so on) I got only google services running in Background. I´ve also experienced it without installing any new apps on my DZ. I think, if is spend so much money for a device, it has to run fast without any lag (i´m not talking about games, only the gui). I tried with and without overclocking, I tried Sense and AOSP Roms...
At the beginning everything runs like hell, and 4-5 days later its not that snappy as it should be. I always did a full wipe before installing a new rom and dont even restored my apps and settings with titanium backup.
If someone suggest my things i could try to speed my device up it would so great. And no, i dont use a tast-killer.
Thank you

How fast do you keep your phone clocked? If I have mine set where it is able to go below 806 I find it does lag some. So I keep it at 1017.

Ive clocked it always on 806 or higher.

Then I really have no idea my friend. Hmm, no bloatware? No apps using crazy amounts of CPU?

Am running MIUI and its pretty snappy. I never use task killer and never been slow. Lol I have about 80 apps installed.

Unusual... I'm running stock with LauncherPro, and the only time I get any real lag is when I'm using a 3D live wallpaper. Switching to a static image fixes that instantly. And that's with Twidroyd, Trillian and Touchdown running in the background. No task killer, they seem to do more harm than good aside from getting rid of outright hung processes.

I know exactly what you mean, man. I will try a ROM and be in love with it then like a week later it starts lagging like a sunuvabitch. Launcher pro has helped a bit.

I just bought a G2 and still really fast with Virtuous ROM. Before i use Samsung i5700 (Spica), and almost the same thing, phone became laggy every 2 weeks. What i did is the following:
1. boot into recovery mode (CWM)
2. advanced -> wipe dalvik cache
3. restart
and viola phone start to be fast again. However i read somewhere in this forum that wiping dalvik is not recommended tough.. but hey..it works for me, so why not

Thanks for your Replys
If the rom starts lagging, i wiped dalvik cache alread to see if it helps and it doesn´t
Miui is a Problem for me cause i only can use the old miui from q´n´d cause its the only miui rom i got my german language pack & keyboard working and im not a big fan of miui. I would love to run the stock g2 rom, but it also has no german language built in and the only stock g2 rom wich works w/o problems on dz is the rooted one where my german keychars on hw keyboard doens´t work...
Also i got no process running in background wich uses more than 2-3% cpu at all. my logcat also doesn´t show something that could cause the lagging. I´m not using a live wallpaper, a taskkiller or something that way.
TJBunch1228 <- I got exactly the same

How often are you guys rebooting your phones? I had a similar issue, started rebooting my phone every night, and wa-la, it works awesome with no lag.
I use an app called CT Scheduler. It was free on the market, but I don't think it's there anymore. I'm sure there are others, this one lets me specify a time for the phone to reboot. I chose 2am (while I'm sleeping).

I reboot my phone every day. I charge it turnd off and power it on every morning.

Now i found my problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-950250.html
That means android take a lil while to know whether the screen is touched or swiped, this produces a noticable "lag" when swipe between homescreens. Now i have to find a way to reduce the time for android to notice that.
If someone could tell my the path or the variable where this is stored.
Thanks

Great phone but needs serious update...

hi all.
I have this phone 3rd day now and here are issues I discovered while using it.
It is a great phone, but needs serious update from guys in HTC.
-Navigation feature is utterly useless.it is so damn slow.in compass mode it is showing wrong direction.also I miss footprints implementation with Google maps.I know, you can open certain footprint in GM but I meant full support.this is only my suggestion but all in all navigation app is horrible and I think once used,it slows the DHD down.
-Sometimes it lags like hell.at least for me.I have installed only apps I've used before on old Desire and there I had no problems with slowdowns or lag.I am using app from market called "SystemPanel".basically it shows all your phone activities an running processes.it can also monitor phone performance over time.this app is showing that every time I wake up DHD CPU usage rises to 100% and stays there until I switch screen back off.then it drops to almost nothing.unfortunately it doesn't show which processes are using this much resources.this app always pointed me to the right direction when I was tracking down defective apps.i have already emailed the developer about this.it could be compatibility issue with this app and new DHD.it also shows that right after reboot almost 75% of RAM is in use.really?this phone has a huge RAM and if this is correct reading, than HTC did a lot of bad coding while making this new Soft.after some time of use my DHD becomes sluggish and lags a lot.I got rid of Samsung Galaxy S because of it's lag issue.I never had any similar problems on old Desire and it has much smaller RAM and was running on 2.1!
-Sync function is a bitt dogy as well.it takes ages to sync all the accounts and it took few attempts to sync with my Google account.I've seen someone posting about this,so I know I am not the only one with this problem.this brings me to all new
-htcsense.com.nothing seems to work right.at least for me.and this was one of the most highlighted features when this phone was announced.
-Camera software is not what I expected.I doubt it is hardware problem.it is just poorly programmed.in low-light conditions quality simply sucks.and I just don't understand why camcorder cannot work on higher frame rate.
-flash support is not that good too.If you select option in browser to "always use" after a while of browsing od flash sites phone gets so slow reboot is needed.after such a long time Adobe still cannot make proper mobile version.that is a fail by me especially when these days mobile devices are in almost everyone pocket and are widely used for web browsing.
That's about it.sorry that you had to read such long post, but that's my DHD experience so far.
My point is that guys un HTC software kitchen should sit down and fix this IMO rushed release and give as an proper update.until then this is great hardware being hold hostage by poor software.it is unacceptable for phone with such specs to be performing like this.
Come on HTC.we know you can do better.
Please share your experience too...
I agree. I've gotvl the very same issue. I would really like to use stock android 2.2 like my old n1 waiting for a very necessary update

stock ROM is one solution.but i enjoyed HTC Sence on Desire.i hope they wil fix this one.
thx for confirming.at least i know i am not the only one with this problems.
I swapped out htc sense for launcherpro and also stopped all the syncing that htc sense requires like facebook for sense, twitter for sense, htc sense, stocks, news and weather.
I then set profiles within setcpu to allow for performance when the screen is on while scaling back the processor whilst the screen is off.
Installed spare parts and sped up some of the animations and bam! my desire hd is as fast as my nexus one was with CM6 with over-clocked kernel and all the lag has disappeared. I also have over 30 apps I have installed myself.
The problem with flash I'm sure will be fixed sometime, everyone is experiencing this slow down.

i don,t know what you mean by "running stock".
and no.i don't use any task killer.don't think it is needed in Froyo.
Ive found a lot of the slow down is from programs starting up and starting in the ram most I found from htc :/ I've used root and a auto memory manger (one that uses the system, not an app killer) and now my phone runs great next step is full root and a custom rom to fully cut out the bloat : D

Have you people who are suffering from performance problems installed the OTA update? It was supposed to fix some performance issues IIRC. My DHD is blazingly fast and i have around 100 apps installed. I run SystemPanel too and haven't seen any high cpu use.

Unfortunately I have to agree as well. Lags the whole time, ages to load the picture gallery with about 200 photos. But the worst thing, it is not supporting ActiveSync with Exchange 2010, for me incredible! I feel like on HD2 at the beginning, great hardware but bad software. On DHD I was sure that the software must be better but it is disappointing. I never had such lags on the HD2 even with the worst ROMs. I am also a bit diasappointed from the home screen. On HD2 with Co0kie home tab I had a lot of more information as I have now. The Market, for me the biggest improvement, is not really working since the begining, needs 20 retry to download a 1 MB app. I am sure HTC will fix most of the software problems but currently it is disappointing.

it is a shame that in the end i have to get rid of HTC software.i know some may not agree with me but i like HTC's software.i loved what they did since i had my old Touch Pro.Manila made that phone different from others that time and ever since i was buying HTC phones for their innovative approach.i cannot believe they screwed up so much this time.but i've seen them fixing their mistakes before so i still have hope.

I meant "out of the box" I'm asking because you seem to point to the HTC software as the culprit for your lag problems, but it is not so clear to me why you come to this conclusion. I also use CPU monitoring aps, and my CPU load is mostly 0%. So how do you know it's not another app? Did you do a reboot? what happened after that.
I know it is not needed to run a Task killer, but it could be the reason for your lag, that's why I asked.
Maybe it needs gingerbread
Having said that, there is already report gingerbread will be out (on at least one handset) on 8th Nov. I m not convinced HTC will update DHD to Gingerbread for at least a few month given their track record with the past model. There will probably be only 1 update for the life time of DHD.
Is launcher pro a valid alternative to the sense? I mean will use more power and drain my battery faster? To use the memory manager should you get root? With Paul's visionary?
I am not giving up on sense just yet but I would like to know if there are alternatives...

well i noticed this after a few first hours of using DHD.that was before and after i added 3rd party software.the main reasons why i think that the cause of this lag is HTC software are...
-after a while of using Navigation app phone started to lag
-if i add navigation widget and then i navigate to that page on the home screen there is almost instant lag.
-it is not only Navigation app but some others too.like friend stream, htc peep etc.this apps worked fine on old Desire.i was using them on daily basis so i am sure.
-almost every other non HTC app i use runs smooth.
-when i sync my Gmail only,it is just fine.but if i use HTC sync all widget it is just painfully slow and it is slowing down the whole phone.
can you please recommend me an CPU monitor app you are using?so i can check my DHD with it.

problem is,it is showing me constant 100% CPU usage while phone is on but it doesn't show which app is responsible for this being such i high value.SystemPanel always worked without a problem for me and i always found defective apps with it.but in this case i have no idea how to track it down.SystemPanel simply doesn't see it or registering it.confused here a bit...

SystemPanel works fine for me and usually shows < 10% cpu. Maybe you have something installed that's not fully compatible with the new Sense that is causing the problem? It seems there is a genuine problem here with quite a few people reporting it. The difficult bit is working out what it is of course since it's not affecting everyone.

Try OSmonitor, in settings you can set it to show processes according to CPU load etc. I also use that app for looking at differnt logs eg. battery logs.
Perhaps you can also try SeePU for showing CPU and RAM usage in your notification bar! I like that I can see what's going on!
I'm trying to replicate yor problems using Navigation and Friendstream, but it doesn't slow down. You didn't install the youtube update by any chance?

Archos 101 and 2.2 starting to dislike even more

The more I use this.. the More i realize that Archos needs some majoy fixes coming soon.. The performance on Android 2.2 is actually pretty bad. I think 2.1 ran better.. I can't do more than 2 tabs at a time in the browser. if I do 3 I get mad lag and freezing and often leads to complete freeze if one has flash on it.. Last night it rebooted twice on me after freezing on simple flash sites like Engadget.. My G1 ran better to be honest. Yea it didn't have flash. but my G1 ran better.
At first I was liking 2.2 and it seemed pretty good. but constantly killing tasks trying to keep performance good is getting old. yea yea 256mb ram. People keep saying this, but the Original Droid runs great compared to this. They have pretty similar hardware.. I sure hope root, and a custom rom comes out soon, that or Archos updates 2.2 and actually ENABLES the JIT Compiler and other things this time. cuz performance is slower on 2.2 than on 2.1
I wanna keep this, but I don't at the same time. lol
From what some people with insider information are saying, there will be an update soon. I think they released froyo because they said they would and not because they thought it was perfect. Still have hope something good is coming. Actually I find that the device runs quite ok even though I have to use the task killer very often.

LauncherPro completely eliminated the response lag for me, and I haven't needed to run a kill since I installed it.
There are only two important settings to optimize performance in the Menu->Preferences. In the General Setting, check "Keep in memory". In the Advanced Settings->Memory Usage Settings, set the 'Memory usage preset' to 'High'.
The device is now faster than it was in 2.1. Archos should be shipping this launcher instead of the default (or properly tune the default launcher).

I have since swiched to Zeam Launcher and I love the drawer, and have not had to kill any processes yet. I may have found a winner!
Try doing a full wipe and reinstall. I was having charging issues and did the full wipe and it not only fixed my charging issue, but it sped the whole thing up (even w/out z4root) ad its been far more stable too.
It does that for me too. Much faster and smoother after a full wipe. Runs perfect now with very rare issues of freezing... I was having much more issues beforehand, even z4root not rooting (Which might have been because of app2sd).
All my apps are on the tiny 300MB space now...
Yup me too. Ut is really snappy without even being rooted.

with the new beta firmware the quadrant result is up for 25 %
Ive got the 101 with 2.2 but Im getting ready to sell it off. Im just not happy with it and even IF custom ROMs and perm rooting happens, the limitation of the app storage and 256 RAM is a killer for me. I thought it would perform ok and for some I guess it does but it isnt living up to me standards.
Maybe the G-Tab or Adam will be better
Yea im not sure what i think anymore. I was loving it for a day or 2.
Ive been running LP n it made scrolling better, but thats all. I feel like overall stock is better.
ive been having even more major problems after writing that post. Now archos tv out, music, and video widgets all crash on startup and FC if i try to open them. It has froze completely 4 times tonight. Restarted 3 on its own. Browser cant handle more than 2 tabs.. i just wiped my device back to stock once again. For now things seem pretty good. Ill give it a few days stock n see. But been smooth the last hour or so
Im seriously considering selling it and getting a like new Galaxy Tab. The G was decent, and the N Ink is unproven n not even shown its hardware in a while.. but i have high hopes. Well see. I do agree froyo was not ready n needs some serious work. Archos needs a update asap

Great news! Hopefully it is working at least as good as the 1.0.84 (no SMB and WPA2 wifi issues)
Issues keeping me from loving it (I think these are all pretty common):
No access to the files on my WHS except via UPnP (SMB Folder Empty issue)
Graphical lock no longer shows green lines (it does unlock though)
WIFI occasionally quits until I stop/restart it
Flash is slower than dirt and causes Dolphin HD to FC a lot (I ended up uninstalling flash)
General lagginess unless I constantly kill tasks
WHS seems to have an authorisation problem, as with every linux box smb seems to work flawlessly ( as with my buffalo Mini ).
As there is no official Flash you can only have one that was designed for another device, so that explains a little.
I personaly have only seen the remark from archos that they have a hw accelerated version in a certification process by adobe.
And the rest might be already fixed, if i would know anything or could talk about it.

Yeah, the issue is that Archos doesn't give you a way to specify the username/password combination to use to connect to the SMB server. I bet if I turned on guest access to my WHS it would work, but I'd prefer not to do that...

I just installed the final build of Cyanogenmod 7 on my Evo last night.

for those who are on the fence about installing this, here's my experience. i was on myn's warm 2.2 before.
I installed it last night.
Honestly, Myn's 2.2 was very good, which was why I wasn't in a rush to replace it, but my coworker showed me cm7 on his phone at work yesterday and I had to do it as soon as I got home.
The problem w/Myn's is that I actually ran low on memory at one point, I was down to about 65mb (on the phone), so I had to delete a bunch of apps. I tried moving the apps to my SD card but that caused them to no longer work, a bug w/myn's.
I think on a fresh Myn's install, your mem is about 250mb, but cm7, your mem free is 378mb.
Another inconvenient bug w/Sense widgets was that sometimes, you have to go to that desktop in order for the Sense widget to reload its data, like the contacts widget which show no contacts until you displayed the widget and you could see it loading the contacts data. I think that was a Sense thing, cuz that happened on all my ROMs.
Tho, I do miss my pretty Sense widgets. I'm gonna be finding replacements for them and doing a write up for all the other Evo owners on XDA.
The nice thing about cm7 is that it feels slightly snappier than Myn's. Maybe that's just a placebo? But at least I didn't lose any functionality, which is why this is my first cm rom. I can't give up 4G, it's like going back to dial up.
One thing I don't like is their hotspot app, it sucks compared to the Wifi Tether app on other ROMs. You can't see who's connected and there is no access control. And it doesn't show amount of data downloaded or uploaded. Even tho Sprint's plan is unlimited, I try not to abuse it and that feature helped me monitor myself.
I should've done a speed test comparison before and after.
Well, the speedtest.net download numbers I got on CM7 were: 5mbps on the phone, 2mbps on the laptop
sad.
Another thing I don't like is the camera app. How do you turn off the shutter sound? It has more settings but in the video, there are no settings to set the resolution or codec type, how do we know which one is the hardware supported h.264? The Sense camera has ****ty focus sometimes on close objects, like it will hunt for focus, which you can see the object go into focus and but when it locks on the object, its focus is off. I haven't tested this with cm7 yet.
Cosmetically, the difference between cm7 and myn's is minor, you just lose the pretty Sense widgets. Performance wise, it feels snappier, but that's subjective. The main reason why I upgraded was more stability, even tho myn's was very stable for me. But the side benefit is that I got about 125mb extra memory and I hope SD apps will work properly this time.
Also, I hope we won't have to deal the the inconvenience of widgets losing their data randomly and having to go to that desktop so the widget can reload its data.
I also miss the Sense clock app, hope someone can figure out how to port that, it's very user friendly to set alarms and such. cm7's works fine but sense was better. sort of the same reason why i went to cm7, myn's was fine, but cm7 is better.
anyway, so there's my .02 on cm7.

for those who are on the fence about installing this, here's my experience. i was on myn's warm 2.2 before.

Welcome to the club! You'll get used to all the little differences quickly and wonder why you didn't switch earlier. For some cool widgets, check out the sticky called "commonly used widgets"under the android general section. You'll most likely get beautiful widgets or fancy widgets if you like the sense based ones. I agree, cyanogenmod seems snappier, simply because it is. Theres less crap running in the background like sense so things load faster and respond better. You might consider also getting adw ex or launcher pro, both will make it even more smooth. AFTER you do, you can uninstall the regular version of adw with titanium backup.
Glad you like it so far!

My phone ran out of memory for the first time last night using cm7, using pic say pro I got a pop up telling me it could not complete the task due to low memory. It was also around 65 mb. I used my system panel to clear the memory andnit was fine after that. Maybe its just my phone, but it just seems to perform better using a sense ROM.
The main reason I like cm7 is the great battery life.
Glad you're enjoying it. I used to go back and forth the Sense, but I haven't been off AOSP for a while. Once you get used to it, it's much better.
To turn off the camera click, you need to delete the sound file with Root Explorer. It's under System>Media>Audio>UI>camera_click.ogg.
The sense roms are definitely more stable and prettier. But I just feel like I'm wading in a sea of molasses.
When I go from Sense to CM I feel like I just took a 20 pound dump. Ahhhhhhhhh.... nice.

Actually, PicSay pro was complaining about low RAM memory, not regular storage memory--I'm assuming you were trying to export a high def picture with lots of effects. It uses up tons and tons of ram and the same would happen on sense too.
I had the same perception that somehow Sense was better and more stable. It took me a full month to realize that both CM7 and Sense are stable.
Also CM7 is way better on touch responsiveness and scrolling because Gingerbread has dramatically improved core video drivers.
As long as you like your personal phone experience then I'm happy for you. I personally don't care for CM, at least not for the Evo. I used to use it on my Windows 6.1 touch pro and had fun. But it just doesn't have enough stability and usefullness for me on the Evo.
The only AOSP rom I was able to use for extended periods of time Deck's. It was a lot more stable, and usable then CM. Only problem is it doesn't have the rabid raving fan base behind it, it's better to be first, not necessarily the best, but that was just my experience with it. I've put CM on my phone probably 7 times now, and it never lasts, I like my equipment to work and work well, when I want it to, every time. AOSP on our phone does not provide that for me.
The camera sucks, actually takes worse pictures, viewing pictures sucks too. Even using 3rd party galleries, pictures are never as clear as on a sense rom. Here is a post I made about it last Sept. and sadly nothing has changed about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8141530#post8141530
You'll find likes and dislikes, if you prefer it then good for you. But makes sure you test everything out first. I personally would recommend Dark Cocoa II by 1975Jamie. I love this one, I currently have a crapload of apps installed and am at 295mb free on my internal storage.
I've tried warm 2.2, it was really nice at first, but that rom fell apart very quickly, I think i was off it within a week. Dark cocoa rls II has kept me for a very long time.
Again, all is personal.

You're right, I'm back! The Hotspot app in CM7 was providing very unstable internet routing and connection. I tried installing the WiFi Tether app but I think ppl have trouble getting that to work on CM-7. I posted the issue here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...ions-of-wifi-tether-app-for-evo-21-wont-work/
BTW, this is the first time I had to do a Nandroid restore and I found out that:
It wouldn't restore from the phone, I had to use ADB shell on the laptop
Nandroid didn't make a nandroid.md5 file, so I had to make one myself
It was scary running into these issue on my first restore!
Anyway, I got restore to work, do this:
adb shell
cd sdcard
cd nandroid
cd [your phones special serial ID folder]
cd [the restore folder you want to restore]
from here create the MD5 file from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785858
enter in the restore command shown from the phone
it will ask you to confirm the directory then hit ENTER
Just FYI!

I think CM-7 comes with ADW EX? Yea, I had to go back to Myn's cuz of Wifi Tether but I can't wait to go back to CM-7!

Is that a Sense ROM? I like Sense, but I'm hoping that in Sense 2.x+ and 3.0, they fixed the problem of the widgets just randomly losing its data and having to reload it, quite annoying.
Yea that's what I ment I ran out of RAM on cm7, I didn't think it was possible since I don't have a lot running in the first place. I was adding effects to a pic I took with the front cam. So it wasn't that big of a file.

Just the plain adw launcher, EX is the paid version with extra features.
Guys, just use VaelPak... it is basically a Sense CM. I'm loving Go Launcher with it. By far the best launcher I've tried between LP, ADW, Sense, and Go.
PS - All ROMs feel snappy when it's fresh... wait a couple of weeks to really assess. CM started dragging ass then.
For launchers, I recommend Go Launcher Ex. Its basically Launcher Pro without the extra widgets, and its free. Actually all the Go team apps like Go SMS Pro are rapidly becoming my favorite.
There is a final already?
I have destroyer v2 is that CM final or a diff build? hello?
The final build is CM7. No other names, not a nightly.
HOWEVER...
GPS has split personalities
4G is is a bit slow and slightly psychotic
Going to stock than back to CM7 gets the GPS to work for about the time it takes to locate you, doesn't work for navigation.
Screen lock has an uncanny ability to make the screen go blank, causing you to go batty pressing the sleep button numerous times until the screen decides to turn on.
Yes its snappy, and more efficient. But its not what I'd call stable.
I love sense sometimes but batt life is mediocre, and as well sense is a ram hog.
Im switching back to dark cocoa 2.

I 100% agree "just use vaelpak". I came from Myns to Vaelpak about a month ago and couldnt be happier. It was starting to mess up a little bit, the kernel i was using didnt agree. So I figure I would try CM7, seeing how everyone loves it and brags about it. Well.... It's just not for me, to jumpy for my phone and I like when everything works/stable

Yes! But I checked my thread on CM forums about the Wifi tether issue, and it looks like others have the same issue. If you never use Wifi tether then try it out, cm7 is awesome.

OK how do you guys get your streak to be so smooth?

How do you guys get the streak to run so smooth? I rooted it, and installed the 1.0.9 dj_steve ROM. I have seen youtube videos of this thing being really smooth, but for me it's really choppy.... I have the stageui, should I reflash and take it off?
you dont need to reflash, but you might as well. i run launcher pro which disables stage ui, but it will still be there on the phone (you just wont see it) so a reflash would wipe it off and you could then run whatever launcher you like without stage taking up resources.
You think it's the stage ui then...
I found the Streak ran faster and more smoothly when I deleted Stage UI.
I have a rooted (Gingerbreak) stock 351 ROM and it's very smooth and snappy. First app I installed after flashing and rooting it is Launcher Pro Plus. Then, I installed SystemApp Remover to uninstall most of the Dell stock apps (Stage widgets, Accuweather, etc.).
Pretty sure it's Stage UI that's the problem. I tried it for all of 30 seconds and then immediately went in and deleted it!! Too laggy for me. Gimme ADW Ex or LPP any day!
I use baby oil on it to make it super smooth

Probably stageui, try a different launcher. I had a lot of lag with stage =/
Also, overclock it a bit if you can and try the app Spare Parts. Set up everything for fast & fancy...

You don't NEED to do either of these to increase performance. I would simply download and install LauncherPro or ADW or VTL launcher. Any of those three are so much superior to Stage in every way.
Overclocking isn't necessary, neither is the perfmod. While both are nice, you will want to be sure you know what you are doing before you go down those paths ... just in case.
I wanted to overclock it to 1.2 but setcpu won't let me... it will only do 1.5 on stteakdroid 1.9

I got 1.9.0 on mine, and use SetCPU to overclock to 460 MHz-1382 MHz. It runs stable very nicely especially when using the GPS.
One thing I absolutely hate is the choppy home screen using Laucher Pro with effects disabled. It's usable, but it still can't compare to the smoothness of iPod Touch 4g or Windows Phones home screens.
Another thing I really hate about Android is that wifi is not that smooth. It doesn't stay on even if I change the menu in 'wi-fi settings' - 'Advanced' - change the sleep policy to 'Never', and it doesn't automatically switch to known wifi when I move to another location. The worst thing about wifi is that it sometimes doesn't work at all even if it can see the routers, and say it's connected. This really pisses me off. Kakao talk, emails notifications come in really slow. Sometimes it doesn't come in unless I manually run those apps and do a refresh.
I bought mine as a phone/ipod touch 4g replacement, but these problems are making me want to get rid of my streak. If the GPS was slow too, I would have already sold it. GPS is way faster than my Garmin 1350T.

Mine has been great with wifi (untill the dj steve gingerbread update). It always stays on and always switches between known and saved connections when i move from one known hotspot to another.
However, now with the new update, when wifi is left on and my streak is idol it likes to reset itself. Now i have to leave it off all the time. Ive also experienced a ton of lag and sluggish performence with this new update. Fingers crossed for an update soon.

Can I download that from the market?
Official 318 + Perfmod + clean crapware + overclock to 1,2 + baby oil (optional ) = Best streak I 've ever had.
i found stageui lagged me too much, went to adw and just put a blank background, running smooth on 1.9 streakdroid
I believe you can set stageui to be completely removed on install. Ive tried with the fast root uninstallers but it never goes away. I just end up killing it with SystemPanel. Or attempting to.

Lag

We all know Android has that 'lag'. Is your phone laggy?
I've done everything and my Play is still laggy

Just got Xperia play today and I'm dissapointed majorly with it.
I have a Droid X and it never lags
running GummyJAR minimal ROM. 1ghz TI processor 512 ram.
Never misses a beat
I got this loaded crap Xperia and the thing is the slowest android device i have ever messed with. even slower then my friends Ereader. How can this be possible.
I agree the XP is a laggy machine
No lag here, 2.3.4 stock carrier free firmware. Rooted. Nothing frozen. Stock sd card.
I've had it for about 8 months now. Deleted all of the bloatware, deleted the useless apps. Cleared cache every time once in a while and still.
Switching between Sony Home 2.0 and LauncherProPlus(using the two) and still.
Same as swebosdev. No lag on 2.3.4. Everything from menus to transitions to most games have been silky smooth. Especially since I got launcherpro.

I'm running stock ROM, used root explorer to delete all the bloatware and lag free... things pretty snappy. Then again I'm on Verizon and its running stock vanilla gingerbread, well minus the crapware Verizon installed..... but yup pretty fast. And now that I have it overclocked to 1.4ghz zoom. But it was fast even before. Have you tried deleting the bloatware? Made my phone so much faster. That and supercharger script. Those are the two I would recommend as a must. Bloatware gone and run the supercharger script. World of difference.

No lag here - using stock launcher.
The stock web browser is pretty slow though, but I use Opera Mobile which is supposed to be hardware accelerated and it is visibly much smoother than stock.

You could be right as phones tend to last years for me. My previous phone was a bb9700, i passed it down to the wife so i could buy this one.
Have had it since may, never been a single issue with errors or lag.
Thats not to say im out of the performance loop as my focus was and still is in tablets. Done alot of work with froyo, webos,Maemo.
Yes my phone does lag occasionally, but for basic functions like Texting, calling, etc.. It's fine. I just installed the v8 supercharger script today so I will see if that helps.

Rooted and with busybox installed (look in android market for busybox installer). Busybox version between 1.16.2 & 1.18.2 are recommended I believe.
EDIT: Pretty sure it's v6 also, not v8. Unless that's a new beta or something
I just installed the script myself, it does seem to make my phone a bit snappier!
No lag here for me. Go to Settings -> Applications -> Running Services and check how many processes are listed there, I only have 4/5.

Actually, one has every right to complain that it comes essentially broken out of the box unless you void your warranty. AT&T in particular crippled the phone so much that it became unusable after allowing a few included apps to download their files and installing a couple more apps from the market, assuming you set up Facebook and all the accounts during initial setup like a good little user. It's because they only left 100MB of internal storage available and run an absolute crap-load of processes in the background. Granted, it may not be the phone's fault, but you should not have to void your warranty or be some XDA-guru to use it.
