I recommend using an application such as Groove IP to connect directly to Gtalk rather than bounce the call all over the place to different SIP providers.
Trying to find a way to verify GV w/o a active U.S. phone number? This info will still work for that, but you have to use IPKall routed to PBXes extension w/ "info" as DTMF type on (pbxes extension) settings.

While I didn't personally use the method myself, a post on the Google Voice discussion forum said you can perform your verification call on a Gizmo number (receive it by logging into the flash client at gizmo5.com)
The first time I set up an ipkall DID, it took a week. Kind of annoying.
Due to bandwidth limits causing the images to go down, I have moved the guides.

Well, I read that information roughly a month ago so it could have been changed. On Gizmo's gizmovoice.com page, they state that a user can buy a 6-month DID number to accept the GV confirmation call, so I guess its probable that a Gizmo number cannot be used for confirmation.
It's a shame it took so long for ipkall to get back to you. It usually does take a day or two, but a week is awful. Then again waiting 6-8 months for a Google Voice invite is a tad bit more irritating (but still well worth it)

Well it was before I even got my GV invite, mainly just as experimentation for getting my SIP setup. Free is free, so I wasn't really concerned.
By the way, I have updated the Sipdroid primer a little. Might make some more tweaks/update the sample pics later.

Thank you, and yes you are correct about the 3 minute limit, but you don't have to leave gizmo for that. Just set GV as default dialer and set call method to Call-Back in GV (Be sure to set gizmo # as callback in GV app). Other than that Gizmo5 charged for callerID at the time I set mine up, and I had alot of choppy calls when using them (even using X-Ten and Ekiga from pc). Also Google Voice did not (and I'm not sure if they do yet) allow a Gizmo # to be default forward. Using IPkall gives you a true US # which can be set as default and used to validate g.v. account. People who don't have a US # couldn't even forward to Gizmo until a default US land or mobile number was set.
As far as missed calls and sipdroid timing out, I believe it depends on how you are connecting. I haven't had any trouble with such issues while on 3g. In fact I use this as my only method of calling, and dropped down to just the data plan with my carrier. Before we got 3g where I live I would have similar problems on EDGE and WIFI networks. Try setting the minimum signal strength lower for the networks you will be using under advanced settings on sipdroid. Also be sure to use TCP rather than UDP. Required refresh time is alot longer with TCP and you will not get as many time-outs.
Another thing is it may very well be gizmo5 causing the timeout issue. I did miss a few calls and got alot more disconnects while I was testing to see if I could cut out a few legs of my forwarding scheme. Figured it would cut back on a little latancy, but It gave me issues so I switched back. Though Sipdroid supports any sip provider that uses the proper codecs, it is really designed to work well with PBXes. I have tried it with 4-5 providers and none worked as well as PBXes. Even gizmo5 worked better through PBXes than directly connecting from sipdroid.

sipdroid connects to pbxes fine, and the extension shows up as active. the call just never makes it to sipdroid
if i call from sipdroid OUT, i get a message that says please try again later and hangs up

There may be a problem with inbound routing settings. One thing you could try would be to skip sip2sip by forwarding ipkall directly to your pbxes extension. There are instructions on how to do this at pbxes. It works quite well. I will add this to the guide soon. I've just been a little busy lately.

There are quite a few things that could cause this.
What type of call are you trying to make? (are you calling another sip# or a pstn#)
Which sip provider do you use for outbound calls?
Is your outbound route configured properly at pbxes?
I just let GV handle the outbound calls with callback. I have a sipdiscount account configured for outbound, but I don't really use it much. That's why I didn't cover it in the guide. I'll help as much as I can, but you might also want to check out the Sipdroid Primer. It explains alot about using sipdroid to place calls.

First, thanks for your hard work enabling GV to work on an Android phone, like my unlocked G1 Dev Phone on AT&T EDGE in NYC.
I tried a different route, using Gizmo, Sipdroid, and GV. I set up GV to "use Google Voice for all calls", "call back" method, and WIFI and EDGE for connecting.
It all works just fine, calls to Canada are crystal clear, even away from WIFI on EDGE.
However, I just got my first wireless bill for this DATA ONLY phone (formerly a Blackberry), and was shocked that a 23-minute call to Canada cost me $16.00!
What happened?
Will your method fix the "free" nature of this system, is Gizmo the culprit here?
Please define how I should set up my data-only G1 to work properly with SIP, or do I just undo all the settings for Gizmo, and use the procedures you advise in your post?

Sounds like your google voice also forwarded to your cell number. Make sure it's unchecked on their website under settings > phones. That would also explain why you got perfect calls even away from wifi/edge. You can be sure sipdroid is being used by the color of the call display. If it's a more blueish green it's a sip call. Regular green is cellular network.

First of all my scenario is I'm going to be moving to the Philippines for nursing school next year and I want to keep in touch with my family while taking my unlocked G1 with me. I have a Google Voice number and a Gizmo5 account. I saw on the Gizmo5 site that I can't make calls for free but I can receive calls and talk as long as I like for free, I think... Say I'm receiving a call from the US when I'm in the Philippines and I answer. Are they dialing my SIP number or my GV number? And if they're calling my GV number are they being charged for standard domestic calling since it's a Houston #? Basically what I'm looking for is to use my Google Voice number and Gizmo5 account to talk to my family here for free while I'm in the Philippines without them being charged for long distance calls.
Could anyone help me out with this?

I set sipdroid up using gizmo5 and here's what I did
verify your gizmo through google voice then set google voice to forward incoming calls to your gizmo number
On the gizmo website you can set your google phone number as the outgoing ptsn just use the google voice tab and enter your gv # now all outgoing calls are free to any US #
Now setup your siddroid info username/password is gizmo username or phone # and your password
set your server to proxy01.sipphone.com
leave domain empty
port =5060
protocol = udp
and your done, now your friends, family can call your local number and it will forward all your calls to your phone anywhere with a internet connection and you can also make calls to any US number for free using the same connection

Your sip phone number would be your pbxes extension
Example: gurnted-200
Sip Proxy would be: pbxes.com (.org works too but not as well)

Does the time limit no longer apply for Gizmo outgoing? I stopped using them when I got 2 days of choppy calls (both on sipdroid and pc softphone) and havn't been back since. Have they changed it so out calls through Google Voice are unlimited? Also it uses udp which needs to refresh 10x as often. The developer of sipdroid says this causes excessive battery drain. How well is it working for you?

To clarify. If you use the "Google Voice" app developed by Google you are indeed using your cell line. However, if one uses the "GV" app developed by Evan Charlton you are able to set callback number to whatever you choose. By choosing IPKall # as callback and forwarding it to a sip account, calls are made over the net/data plan through Sipdroid.
I have my gv # on my friends and family list. I guess this means I'm using minutes when I use gv to dial out.
Does anyone know how this works?
You will want to download the "Google Voice" app from the Droid Marketplace. Also if you search these forums there are how-to's on how to set it up to replace your Verizon voicemail as well as using it to call out/have calls come in. If you need more help after that let me know (also I would happy to take a GV invite off your hands if you have one to spare =p, *note* I will continue to help you regardless ).
I've already downloaded that app and I love how it works except for not using my local gv number when I dial out. It seems to use a random, simi-local number each time.

Just wondering, I'm not sure if this is related to your issue, but did you have caller ID blocked in any way before/during setting up GV?
Edit: Also for making outgoing calls, are you calling your GV number and then dialing out from there? Using that method or calling directly from your computer SHOULD make your GV number appear when you call someone (the GV app is suppose to do this for you, btw if you need help testing this I can PM you my phone number... free weekend mins and all =p).
Force GV Settings
Another thing you can try is going to https://www.google.com/voice/#callsettings and setting the "Caller ID (out)" to your GV number. This might force GV to display the correct number. What it sounds like they are doing now is drawing from a pool of random numbers in the area (for whatever reason, I don't know why) that they control and routing your call through them.
From what I have read, there is no way to dial straight out through gv. You have to dial your own gv number and use the #2 option.
I think I had a Window's Mobile app on my Touch Pro that did that for me.

That's not how it works with the native Android app. It's much quicker/easier and it dials some other "special" number, not your own GV number.

That defeats what I want it for - free calls.
My GVoice app seems to dial the same number every time. When you start a call using your GVoice number, just look at the pop up that says "Calling via Google Voice ###-###-####' and add that to your Verizon Friends & Family numbers. Your bill will show that you call that number over and over, so all outgoing calls are free. Incoming calls will not be free unfortunatelly :-/

Hey gentleart sorry for the late reply, I've been afk for a couple days thanks to my gf working the front desk at a Pediatrician's office x.x (curse those snot-bubbling runts, we went through 30 packs of ramen noodles and tea in the last few days =p).
I didn't notice that "Caller ID (out)" only applied to text, I wrote that before I had access to GV and that was a recommendation I read on their board. Even if that were true for making phone calls though, it might not solve your problem. I'll make a thread on the Google Voice help site about this specific problem though (I'll PM you the link once the post is up) and if an answer arises out of it, I'll post it back in this forum for public knowledge (BECAUSE KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! ugh sorry... x.x).

J/W, under Google Voice's "Calls" settings, have you tried changing "Caller ID (in)" to "Display my Google Voice number"? For some reason I have a feeling that you would still get billed for the incoming call (I can't wait until cell phones work like landlines) plus you wouldn't know who was calling (possibly forcing you to talk with relatives or even worse... ex-significant others x.x).
If you are a heavy enough phone user to need this you would probably want to switch to the unlimited plan, but I'm just curious how it would work with Verizon. For now though, I'm going to try and figure out why some people are getting multiple outgoing GV numbers when using the Android app (I think if you are in a heavily populated area - by GV users at least - that it might just cycle you out to another number... but there should be a way to force it to use your number without having to dial manually).

This is what I did, and I can confirm that all outgoing calls are free. I also added my GV number to my "10" so that when family calls it's included. Unfortunately you can't have your cake and eat it too, your incoming calls will be charged minutes just like they've always been. I just have it go to my work phone while I'm at work, and answer it for free using my land line.

Install Google Voice Callback. This routes your calls via the web for dialing purposes and then google voice calls you back. Now outgoing calls are free if you have friends and family, and incoming calls are free if someone calls your google voice number.
You still have to have a pretty high priced contract with Verizon to get friends and family though.
For fear of sounding like an idiot I just have to ask.. I got a Google invite finally and now I'm not sure what I want to do. I really need to keep my current cell number because I have a billion business cards with this number, but I want the awesome voicemail service. I'm guessing I should choose the Voice Mail option only and I will not lose my current number? Does this sound about right?

The number you see pop up when you dial should actually be the same each time. You should put that number in your friends and family and then using google voice out should not use minutes.

So here is what I did... I now have a working VOIP phone service via my T-Mobile Tab..

-- Go to skype.com and setup an account
-- Order a Skype Internet Number (it's $30 for a year right now -- normally $60)
-- Add a Skype calling plan ( I went with $2.99 a month for unlimited calling)
-- Set Skype to display your Google Voice Number (Caller ID Settings)
-- Set Google Voice to forward all calls to your Skype number
-- Go into Google Voice App and set it up to use your Skype number for voicemail notifications.
It works and it works pretty darn well...
Pros:
--Incoming and outgoing voice capabilities
--Unlimited calling in the US and Canada for $2.99 a month
--With 3G data plan you always have phone functions to dial out and receive
--Use Google Voice for SMS messages and you only have the one number.
Cons:
--If you don't want to use the Google Voice number for SMS then you will have 2 numbers. The one that came on your Tab that is used for SMS/MMS and a number for phone usage.
--Price for this to work per year amounts to $66 ($30 for the Skype number and $36 for the unlimited plan) Not really a con if you consider this is the total cost for a year of unlimited cell (VOIP) calls from you Tab
--If you use Google Voice for SMS it does not do MMS
Here is how it works...
When someone calls your Google Voice number it forwards it to the Skype number and the Tab rings...
When you call someone it displays your Google Voice number...

1) a big con for me is that it means I can't port my existing cell no. to my new Tab... and since I'm a consultant and it's been my phone no. for a long time... that's kind of a drag.
2) Also, I've heard Skype call quality is sketchy at times?
3) No 911 calling via Skype I beleive?

Skype can be sketchy if on a slow or weak 3G or Wifi connection... I have had no problems with it yet though...
Yes, no 911 calling.... But you can program your local police / fire / EMS non emergency dispatch center number as a contact... That's what I did... Granted it's not as fast to get answered as 911, but it is a suggestion...
I don't see why you could not forward the previous cell # to GV then have it forwarded to Skype. Then set the Caller ID in Skype to display your previous cell number... Should work...
I might give this a try and see how I like.... since the phone flashing seems to be stuck at 2G plus a few other problems at this point....

I decided to do this route as opposed to flashing the other way... Flashing the Euro ROM does still have issues and even once they are worked out, I can't see a US carrier adding voice to the Tab... Even with flashing the Euro ROM you will still need another SIM card to use that has voice functions enabled on it (hence, a different number like this process requires)...
Many people already have my GV number so this was also an easy way to get phone function without much effort... And at $66 a year for unlimited voice, I don't see a carrier plan even coming close to that...

I did this for months on my old Milestone (Droid) due to me being in Canada and everyone I knew being back in the US (and all calls to the US are int'l long distance via cell) until I found a way to make GV work here in Canada via normal phone lines.
Yes, call quality via Skype is sketchy at times, depending on connection quality, and there's ALWAYS lag.
Call forwarding works fine.
I wouldn't sweat 911, but then again I have almost no respect for that service anyway.
How stable has this been running for the ones using it?

You'll need some sort of VOIP to make it work, but it doesn't have to be Skype.
Keep in mind, Google Voice is NOT a VOIP service, it's a fancy call forwarding and voicemail service that also lets you pick a free US phone number for life.
And folks, there's always Sipdroid and a SIP number service (there's quite a few besides Gizmo)

I currently only have the Google Voice app installed (no hacked Skype). When I go into my contacts (app which came with Tab) and I click on a contact, and then click the message icon, a little screen pops up asking if I want to complete the action using Messaging or Google Voice. Furthermore, you can check the "Use by default for this action" to always use Google Voice for texting. When I click Google Voice the text shows up to other people as my Google Voice number.
If the trick in this thread can use your Google Voice number as what shows up to other people as your caller ID, wouldn't this simplify you down again to one number (the Google Voice number)?
the problem with this is skype doesnt work with Bluetooth headset. so you either have to get a WIRED headset or use speaker phone which means no privacy

Furthermore, you can check the "Use by default for this action" to always use Google Voice for texting. When I click Google Voice the text shows up to other people as my Google Voice number.
If the trick in this thread can use your Google Voice number as what shows up to other people as your caller ID, wouldn't this simplify you down again to one number (the Google Voice number)?

It would, but GV still does not do MMS..... Plus you would loose the snazzy Tab SMS/MMS messaging app...

Yeah, and I love that app....
About 5 minutes after I turned my Tab on I got a text asking if I wanted to buy some chronic/Mex from someone who obviously didn't know their contact's phone no. had changed!
But the app is great!

Good point, decisions decisions! For me I may be willing to sacrifice MMS for the simplicity of one phone number. I would justify it by using video calling, YouTube posting, and Facebook/Picasa pictures. I'm already giving up the native Email app because it puts weird labels on my Gmail emails instead of archiving emails like the Gmail app. So much for "native tablet optimized apps."
Cons for this route:
No 911 support
Two phone numbers or no MMS
Complicated calling procedure through Skype

Don't know if it's working for anyone else, or if anyone else has tried it, but Google Voice is working for me as of last night. Ported number without having to terminate my contract, and is now my primary VM. If it hasn't been working for others yet you should go ahead and try it

Edit: just did it on my phone...got to the part that said it was portable for $20...I think doing that would still cancel my number with sprint, then they'd charge me the etf.

I'm pretty sure Porting will cancel your contract with Sprint. They are setting up Google Voice to use our Sprint numbers, but I haven't checked on the status of it yet. I hope OP didn't screw himself tonight.
I'll keep my current settings... Voicemail goes over to the VM number I have, I can use the Voice app to manage it (plus my PC). I'm good for now.
I've been using it as my primary VM. It works good, except that when I get a voice mail, I get the VM notification, an email from gmail and a text message at the same time....

im still not sure i understand how this is going to be different. so now i use gv with my sprint number and all i can do is get voice mails, manage it online and get transcribed voice mails (as well as the sms and email notifications i have turned off)
so with the upcoming system will i be bale to do everything i could do with a GV number with my sprint number?

Correct. Google will just switch your current google voice number with your sprint number. So now when people call your sprint number it will ring your computer, other phones and your Sprint phone.
You can block numbers from google voice so when people call your Sprint number they get a, "This number is out of service."
You can text people from the computer and it shows up as your Sprint number.
Customized voice mail greetings for each person if you want.
I think everything in explained in this thread about all the options you now have.
Currently they are slowly rolling it out to everyone.

I would like to do this for free (or as cheap as possible).
When I go to the gym I bring my 10.1 Tab in with me and I watch Netflix while I work out. I hate carrying my phone in there PLUS my tab. Is there any possible way that you guys can think of where I can somehow forward my calls and text messages to my tab to come to me over the gym Wifi????

There are three relatively popular solutions to your question.
[-] The first is SyncSMS, by d0lph1nK1ng. It syncs text messages, using a Dropbox account (you'll need to sign up for one, but it's free for the amount of space required for something like this). You don't need the phone in close proximity to the tablet, but a network connection is required on both devices. Push notifications are available, although as a 'beta' feature.
[-] The second is TexTab, by howettl. It uses Bluetooth to make the transfers, so no Dropbox-style file hosting service is required, however you need the phone to be in the tablet's Bluetooth range.
[-] The third option, which I use, is Google Voice. I prefer the integration (no relying on phone range, file sharing sites, or polling). I receive voicemail notifications and the ability to listen to them in the same inbox. I love the setup. A lot. Phone/tablet/chrome (on my docked laptop) are all notified within three seconds of each other when a new text is received. Google voice uses push notifications on all devices (incl. Chrome, although not technically a device), which has been awesome on my Tab 10.1 in my experience.
Polling is commonly used when push notifications aren't an available feature. This is when an app repeatedly checks every X amount of seconds/minutes/etc. for new messages, instead of being notified from the cloud/other device. Receiving a normal text on your phone is a push notification. It's pushed to your phone. Facebook checking for new friend requests every hour is polling.
Ferris upon has a new app called Verizon Messages that can allow you to sync text messages between your phone and tablet if they are connected too the same wifi network.

You would need to call forward your mobile phone to GrooveIP. This is backwards from what people normally do though(they forward calls from GV# to their phones). hehe

I love the Google voice idea for text messages but I'm assuming he wants to reply to his text messages from his phone carrier. He won't be able to do that with Google voice. He will have to use his Google voice number which is a pain.

Not correct, inbound calls to my Google voice number ring on my wifi tab when I'm signed into grooveIP. I don't forward the carrier assigned cell phone number.

Not if he has Sprint, which it looks like he does.
Google and Sprint have partnered to allow your Sprint mobile number to be your GV number. All texts I send from my 10.1 using GV come from my regular cell phone number. Super slick....

I use groove ip with a Google voice assigned nbr. Used to have the gv nbr forwarded to my phone (droidx). To get the nbr working for both inbound and outbound calls on this tab I had to send the nbr to Google chat. You have to do this in a full browser in your Google account options. Of course you need connection to a Wifi network.

When I desire, I would like to have my phone in my pocket / backpack etc, and be able to use my tablet as a phone. When somene calls my phone, I'd like it to "ring" my tablet. When some texts me, I'd like to see it on my tablet. Moreover, I'd like to be able to place calls from my tablet (using my phone number). (I know you can use google voice and skype, etc. but I want it to use my phone with my phone number and appear in my call log and my tmobile monthly bill).
1) Is this already possible? (If so, what is the software called.)
2) If this is not already possible, is it possible given the exposed APIs of android?
I use GrooveIP and Google Voice with my Sprint number.. SMS and phone work great on Tab and on my SGS2 Epic 4G Touch..

It's the perfect solution and good for some smiles also.
I was sitting on the couch using my laptop PC and a call came in on Google voice. It rang on my land line, it rang on my Galaxy Nexus phone, it rang on my Galaxy Tab and it also rang on my laptop via Gmail. All 4 places had a different ring tone. My wife and I just looked at each other and cracked up laughing.

Yes. I do this with Google Voice and Grove IP.
When someone calls my Google Voice number it rings in 6 places: 1) Personal Cell phone, 2) Galaxy Tab, 3) Laptop PC (via Gmail), 4) Home phone land line, 5) My office desk phone, 6) Office cell phone.
The only downside to this is that I people always know they can get me on the phone.
This also presumes that people call your Google Voice number instead of your cell phone number. It takes a while to train people but after a few months everybody will be using the Google Voice number. In fact, I have no idea what the phone number of my office cell phone is. I'd have to look in settings if someone needed to know.
If you're not using Google Voice do it now. It's a little effort but the payback is BIG.
Also, this makes for some very humorous scenarios. For example, I was in San Jose visiting my daughter. We were in a crowd and got separated. She called me using my Google Voice number. It rang on all of the devices listed above but before I could answer on my cell phone my wife picked up the land line at home which was 400 miles away. My daughter was confused, "Mom? How did I get you? I was calling dad." "Just call again and I won't pick up the phone," says my wife. My daughter called again and this time I answered.
Here's a HUGE benefit of Google Voice:
You can put people into groups. Then you can handle each group differently. For example you can make it so those in the "Office coworkers" group never get passed to your cell or home phone after 8pm. I have a group called Spam. When a I find out a number calling is a telemarketer I put that number into the Spam group. When someone in the Spam group calls me it is NEVER sent to any of my phones. It's my own personal "Do Not Call" list. Google Voice is very powerful.
More Google Voice benefits:
- When someone sends a text message you can have it forwarded to all cell phones and tablets and also your gmail account.
- When someone leaves a voicemail message it will be translated into text and then sent via text messaging. It can also be sent to your email. And, by the way, an attached voice file is included. When you play the voicemail back it highlights the text like a karaoke machine. Very cool.
- ALL Of your text messages and all of your voicemail are stored in you Google Voice mail account. You'll never lose a text or voicemail again. You can log into any browser and retrieve them. And, if you get a new phone all the old text messages immediately show up.

How do I set it up so it still rings on both the tab AND the computer? I assumed this would be the default setting but since installing GrooVe IP, calls only get forwarded to my tab and cell phone but not google chat on the computer anymore. I have to log out on my tab for calls to go to my computer. Any ideas on how I can change that?

I have to admit that I have no idea how it rings on my laptop or what setting it takes to make it ring. I do know it's a part of Gmail. I don't think I'd ever answer a call there. It surprised me at first I had to look around to figure out that the ringing was coming from my laptop.

There is actually an app in the market that does just this.... its called tablet talk and connects over Bluetooth or wifi. Its not free but worth every penny. You only need to purchase it once and install on both devices, it will sync your txt messages and allow you to send/receive on your tablet. The best thing about this app is that it will notify you of an incoming call from you phone right on your tablet From your contacts and allow you to mute the call or hang it up.
Go check it out... you will be glad you did.

It is called Table Talk. And you have to install it to your phone and tablet from the Market.
I can't believe you guys don't know this.
