Verizon unlimited plans :(

sounds like unlimited data plans are going to be a thing of the past. I've been sitting on mine even though I could save some money going to one of their smaller plans thinking that once the unlimited plans are eliminated I could keep it being grandfathered access. Unfortunately I think Verizon has covered themselves pretty good as it looks like they are splitting 3g and 4g plans thus successfully eliminating anyone from holding their plan because soon 3g will be gone.

3G will still be around for quite some time. Verizon doesn't plan to have nationwide 4G until 2013 at the earliest. The plans are what are going to make everyone unhappy. But sadly every company will soon be moving to tiered data plans

My preference for wireless data is pay per use, but given the fluctuating demand with a consistent supply, this isn't feasible to manage. So, I'm ok with tiered plans for now, provided that they allow for multiple devices. Right now I'm paying AT&T $30/month for my wife's unlimited data, Verizon $10/month for my unlimited data (promo, normally $30), and Comcast $53/month for my cable internet. Between the three accounts I pay $93/month and use on average 7GB/month.
Verizon's current LTE plan that would suit me is $80/month for 10GB, with $10/GB overage. If I could have that plan and have it work for my home (wireless receiver/router), and any phones on my account (would move the wife over to Verizon now that they offer the iPhone), then I would be ok with this. So in conclusion, I'm ok with tiered data so long as we get some convergence on the devices that use it.

I'm wondering when sprint will be dropping their unlimited data plan. Hopefully never.

I asked that very question and got confirmation that my plan is set until I change it, irrespective of future tweaks to data and other VZW plans.
I did this for that exact reason - as a hedge against tiered pricing in the future.
If you can still get it, it sure seems worthwhile. I'd keep calling until you get it.

yea but the problem is they're splitting plans for 3g and 4g. This will obviously be considered a 3g plan thus we're out of luck once 3g is irrelevant or the phone we want is only 4g

According to VZW's announcement re: getting the iPhone, they say that the iPhone will enjoy an unlimited data plan "just like all their other smartphones."

Tech sites report that will only be available for a limited time.
Not sure if this only applies to iPhones only or all smartphones.

I was able to get this plan for all 4 of my family plan lines. Nice savings and, according to the customer service reps I spoke with, I will be able to keep this deal indefinately unless I choose to make a plan change.

Verizon Killing Unlimited Data Plans This Summer Good news From Verizon (updated)

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) plans to eliminate the $30 per month unlimited data plan that it still provides to 3G customers who were "grandfathered" into the plan because they were data customers prior to the company's switch to tiered data pricing last July. Speaking at the 40th J.P. Morgan Technology, Media and Telecom conference, Verizon Communications CFO Fran Shammo said that as these 3G unlimited data plan customers migrate to 4G LTE, they will have to purchase the company's data-share plan (which Verizon plans to launch in mid-summer) and move off the $30 per month unlimited data plan. "Everyone will be on data share," Shammo said.
Verizon's data share plan is scheduled to launch in mid-summer but no pricing details have been announced. Shammo said that he believes this new plan will make it easier for families and small businesses to connect multiple devices. The industry, Shammo said, has constrained the market around connected devices because people think they need an additional data plan. "If I can add as many devices as I want, that is more efficient from a family perspective and a small business perspective," he said.
However, Shammo said that with the launch of this new data share plan, the industry will have to change a key metric--average revenue per user. Shammo said that Verizon will move to a "revenue per account" metric that will more accurately measure the company's business.
When asked how Verizon will drive customers to this new data share plan, Shammo said that LTE will be the anchor for the new plan and that as customers upgrade from 3G to LTE, they will have to be on a data share plan, allowing the company to sunset its unlimited 3G data plan. "A lot of our 3G base is on unlimited," Shammo said. "When they migrate off 3G they will have to go to data share. That is beneficial to us."

May 17th update from Verizon
Yesterday, Verizon Wireless CMO Fran Shammo caused quite a ruckus when he stated that users on grandfathered unlimited data plans would eventually be moved over to the carrier's new data share plans that are due to arrive this summer. Verizon has now clarified exactly how this will happen, and it really only matters if plan to get a new subsidized device.
In a statement provided to The New York Times, Verizon clarified that unlimited plans will no longer be an option for customers that upgrade their device once the new data share plans are available. Prior to this, customers that had unlimited data plans were able to continue to use them even if they upgraded their devices.
The full statement is as follows:
"- Customers will not be automatically moved to new shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so.
- When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing.
- Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan.
- The same pricing and policies will be applied to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones."
So that makes it pretty cut and dry. If you are a Verizon customer and you upgrade your smartphone after the new data share plans are released, you can kiss your unlimited data plan good bye. If you happen to still have an unlimited data plan and are eligible for an upgrade now, you might want to use it sooner rather than later.

Oh yea I called it. They Are going to kill the unlimited data plan. I think they were testing throttling, but after that guy won vs AT&T. Verizon will just kill it. I just some how knew that this was going to happen, it was there plan.
Verizon if you do this like I KNOW you will, I will drop you. ( I just about did it any way, becuase of all the issue's I had with my razr.)
Any fan boy's want to call them the best thing ever NOW THAT THEY ARE GOING TO KILL YOUR unlimited data plan.

Did you get your account rebuilt ? cause your problems are not phone related

I did get it fixed after I reported them to the BBB and FCC on the same day. The issue's I had with the first phone were phone related, but the 2nd one is fine. I really don't know what they did, but they fixed it. Speeds were I live are really starting to suck, but are not under 3mbs so it's not all that bad. AT&T's H+ has hung in there well even with 109GB of use one time.
Any way I jumped in knowing this would likely be the case by the time I renewed. My bud that work's for them has hinted to me they would do this. ( I was sure he was right this time, but only the top dogs can do this.)
I was hoping to drop my AT&T phone at some point, but it look's like the black hole has come back.
To all on the unlimited plan's good luck and for your sake and mine by the way I hope this will not pass.

So should I buy a lte phone before they make the change and still get unlimited data for another 2 years our until I upgrade that?

I would say if you need your unlimited plan, do it now/soon and you may be saved from the 2GB plan. I use the word MAY, becuase I have a fealing they may ax it for 4G users as well.

Only reason I went with verizon was for the gnexus and since sprint has it now when they do the switch I'll just go back to them *shudders* Horrible customer support

Might have to look at Sprint, T-Mobile or AT&T on a media net plan. I pay $30 a month for unlimited now and rarely go over 2gigs because I use wifi so often, but as someone else mentioned on droidforums VZ keeps pushing new data-heavy apps like Netflix, touting how quickly you can download movies and music, etc. Google Music, Pandora, etc have excellent streaming, and HBO GO and other network apps are offering great shows and movies right on devices and 2GB/$30 a month is supposed to get it done? And f'ing $50 for 5GB?
Unlimited data was without question the main thing holding me to VZ, and while I can't deny that they have the best overall coverage as well AT&T is pretty good for voice and holy hell if every network but Verizon don't get the best phones. No HTC One on VZ most likely, never got the Galaxy SII in any variant, the Rezound was the only last run of HTCs of note that ever showed up, no decent Sonys. They're trying to shove Moto down our throats with increasing difficulty in unlocking the bootloaders and now this? Thanks Verizon, at least now my options are wide open.
Forgive me if my rant became incoherent at some point. My apologies to all.

Hopefully this does not apply to 4g phones. I will have to root a free 4g phone to replace my incredible 2

Its a smaller carrier that rents network usage from bigger companies, often having plans at lower prices.

If at&t does this I will drop them. Unlimited LTE data is why I stick with them. Even then $65 a month for the lowest talk plan, unlimited LTE data, and only 200 regular text messages is stiff. You eliminate that unlimited data and switch me to 3gb for $30 and there is no point continuing.

Seeking input on US-based GSM carriers.

I'm currently in the group of people still using an unlocked phone (Galaxy SII GT-i9100) on AT&T's $10/mo medianet plan. My wife uses an iPhone 4s on the grandfathered $30/mo unlimited plan. Between the two of us, 550 minutes, and unlimited text, our bill comes to $125.20 every month. It's not bad at all and I have no complaints. However, I'd like an exit strategy in case AT&T yanks the medianet plan as they've recently done to SGS3 and Galaxy Nexus owners.
Two of my options are to accept the $30/mo 3GB limit, or move to the 4GB family share plan. My wife typically uses 200-500MB of data and I average about 1.2GB a month with spikes up to 2GB. Getting raised to the $30/plan brings our bill to about $145/mo (our discount seems to negate the taxes), whereas going to the 4GB family share plan will put us at about $150, and takes away my wife's unlimited. Also, me going to the $10 medianet plan was out of principal, as I previously had the $30/mo unlimited plan, suspended my account during deployment, and then AT&T took it away, claiming that "military lose their grandfathered plans on deployments." I know that's not true, I just got a bad CS rep, but that's what I was told and I've been paying AT&T back ever since.
So, my other options are to try another GSM carrier. I'm in the Seattle area now and T-Mobile has excellent coverage up here, and by proxy, their MVNO carrier, Simple Mobile. In the case of Simple Mobile we could save quite a bit of money as well. But, as many people know, neither the iPhone 4S nor the SGSII support AWS bands. However, T-Mobile has been switching over to 1900mhz lately. Ideally, our phones should already support 3G/fake 4G in this area on T-Mobile. Can any Simple Mobile users comment on whether or not SM is using this new (to them) frequency?
Lastly, in the case of not being able to use 3G/fake 4G on Simple Mobile, are there any other GSM MVNOs worth considering?

I believe Straight Talk is unlimited everything for $45/month, and has support for (your choice of) AT&T, T Mobile, and Verizon (?).
So if you were to take both your phones, dumb them on two different ST plans for $45, you'd end up spending $90 a month for both your phone. Blam!
(Btw, I heard something about cutting you off or throttling at 3 to 4 GB of data usage, but since that's not in your range, I wouldn't worry)

T-Mobile refarmed Seattle already I think (check airportal.de to verify) so I would switch to them. If you both get on the $30 plan and port your number to Google Voice you can use Talkatone or GrooveIP to talk on the phone. And if you get stuck on Edge Talkatone still works good.

Two lines, 1000 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited data w/throttling after 2GB for $79.98/mo. No throttling if you pay $99.98/mo. In both cases, I'm eligible for a 15% military discount, unlike prepaid plans like Simple Mobile and straight Talk. However, I believe T-Mobile hides more below the line fees, making it nearly a wash in terms of advertised price. The difference being, unlike SM and ST, T-Mo won't kill my account for using more than 2Gb on an unlimited plan.
Also, they require a 2-year contract with a $200/line cancellation fee despite it being "bring your own phone," which is some straight up bull****.
As of today, I can save $25/mo moving to their unlimited plan, or $45/mo if I go to the 2GB throttling plan. I'd prefer the unlimited, so at $25/mo, it's only $300/year saved. However, I'd get slightly less coverage, and my wife wouldn't get her $200 iPhone upgrade every 2 years, which pretty much negates the savings (and she would miss her visual voice mail). So, unless AT&T rate jacks me by taking me off Medianet, we're not switching to this plan.

Nexus 7 HSPA+ compatible w/ Pay by the Day $3 plan?

I'm planning on purchasing the Nexus 7 w/ HSPA+ once it's available. As as far pre-paid plans go, it would seem T-Mobile has the best 4G plans available. I know T-Mobile has specific pre-paid tablet plans available, but the amount of data per dollar seems less then what I could get with their "Pay By The Day" $3/day plan.. Now obviously that plan is setup with phones in mind as it includes Talk + Text, but I don't plan on using the cell radio everyday on the tablet because on most days I'm covered by Wifi.
I don't like their tablet broadband plans because the data is offered in 7 day blocks and I'd rather pay a premium price for unlimited data for the day vs paying 5x the cost for a measly 300MB of data.
I'm just curious, Is there any reason why this plan wouldn't work w/ a tablet?

Since this is not a T-mobile device you may get away with a SIM set up with a phone plan. But it's popularity may induce t-mobile to block it as they have done recently blocking Nexus Phones to be used with broadband plans. It's a wait and see really.
On the other hand, I'm my self planning to use my planned Nexus 7 3G with a combination of ATT Broadband plan, Tmobile broadband and freedom pop.
I will have to see....with broadband plans only you get more data for your money...the bad side is the period limit.
Tip: Tmobile has a special 60 days vs 30 days if you buy your broadband card from Walmart only on the $35 3.5gb and 50 5gb plans. After that you can renew them online without having to go thru Walmart.
The other option I will look into...(which negate the benefit of 3G Nexus) is the Internet on the go plans which use Sprint...but recent changes make them very competitive in a sense you pay like 1.13 cents per MB.....and the gb you buy will never expire....The cons are you have to buy a $80 hotspot device, carry it around and you only get EVDO Rev A...thru sprint...Not as fast as tmobile.

Thats about $80 a month (assuming you go a few days without using the 3G Coverage)
You are going to realize after getting your Nexus 7 it will be used more often than you think... I bought mine, thinking it would be something to keep around the house, watch movies, listen to music on occasion, and take it on road trips. But it turned out I hardly put it down, I use it more than my cell phone. So I will certainly be getting the 3G model as soon as google makes it available for order.
The T-mobile "Classic – Overage-Free Plus" has a 2gb 4G limit, but it doesn't cut you off or charge you more when you use of the 2gb, it just drops you to 3G (maybe 2G) speeds until the next month. So you have Unlimited Data, just not always a High(er) speeds. Its gonna cost you 40$/mo but atleast it doesnt charge you more or cut you off completely like most other Wireless Carriers do. I ordered a StraightTalk (US Based) SIM Card, and will see how well it works, and how service is in my small town.
But if that does not work, I have T-mobiles Completely Unlimited Service Plan (Unlimited Talk/Text/Data) for $89. I can just add a new line (to get a another SIM Card) for $10 more a month, and share the Data with the Nexus 7 3G

You dont want to do that sprint EVDO is slower than a snail... Its unlimited but your battery on the device will run out before you can get anything real accomplished.

Any updates from anyone on this.... Curious if you can use the Nexus 7 3g on a $3 daily plan... I just want to use it when I travel in the states...

It won't work. Tmo will block the tablet. Use a prepaid broadband plan instead, or tether to a phone.

That means each month customers can send approximately 800 Instagram photos, more than 2,500 emails or stream 200 minutes of music – all for free."
This is a great perk for those of us with the LTE Nexus 7 and another reason to get one if you havent already. Just thought Id share the good news. :laugh:

It looks like you'll have to wait until November 1st. From Engadget's article on same-
"As of November 1st, the no-charge bandwidth will be available for the lifetime of any tablet on the network; customers who pay for data will get the 200MB on top of their existing caps. The company is simultaneously launching a tablet trade-in program that will discount new devices when shoppers bring in old slates, even if they're WiFi-only."

so long as i am paying for an expensive phone contract, i will not ever consider an LTE tablet contract as well. If only we could get this is england, it would be great.
What i wish someone would do though, is allow you to buy a second sim if you have an LTE phone contract. If i can tether my tablet to my phone, why can't they just create a system where you can have two sims, linked, and share your monthly data allowance between the two.

That's exqc ly what at&t and Verizon are doing with their plans in the US. The way only problem is that they've priced them so high it only helps if you have many devices. They also don't allow tethering. You generally have to install a 3rd party ROM for that.

That's widely available here in Germany. I don't use it, because my phone operator has a good entry level offer (unlimited SMS, unlimited calls in my network and another one, 100 minutes into any network and 300MB UMTS data, after that it is locked to 2G speed) for 18€ per month. 300MB is fine for my smartphone usage. But upgrading to 1GB even adds 10€ per month, going to 3GB doubles the cost. But in theory if I had more data volume, I could add another SIM card to that plan and use the data on all devices.
But it was easier and cheaper to get a heavily discounted contract from another operator (Telekom) which has a better network for data and it costs me 14€ per month for 5GB LTE volume.

That's not exactly true. We switched just my wife's phone to the family share plan and it was the same price as paying for the lowest amount of data + minutes + sms. Not to mention before she did not have tethering and now she has tethering already included. Switched one device and we're already seeing savings.
So, for the same price we got: Unlimited Minutes, Unlimited SMS, 3 times the data, and tethering included (a service we didn't get before). So how is this AT&T pricing too high?
Now if we add my Nexus 7 on the plan it will be only $10 more a month and I will share 1GB of data with her. I don't find that to be priced too high at all. Either way, I'll be taking my free data from T-Mobile and just tether from my phone when I run out.

If i wanted just 200mb from my current provider, it would cost me £2 and would only be available for 24 hours. If i want the data available for a whole month i could get 1gb for £10. It is a joke.
I looked into it in the UK for my provider (02) and looks like they do allow this shared data thing, but only if you have a business contract with them.
LTE tablets are just not going to succeed so long as they are requiring people who already pay for a data plan on their mobile to pay for a data plan on their tablet as well. I will just tether, because name a situation where you have your tablet at hand, but not your phone.

I suppose it depends on your situation. I haven't had to go out shopping in a while, but I'm grandfathered into a Verizon Unlimited data plan for roughly $125/mo for two smartphones. I'm stuck in contract until Aug 2014 for now.
For a Verizon share plan, we'd spend roughly $15 more for both phones and 4Gb of data (we use more than 2Gb combined)...assuming they apply our employee discount to the entire account. Adding a tablet is another $10 and we don't need mobile tablet access every month.
If I had to shop now, I'd look at Net10 with AT&T access for 2 phones for $85 and 2.5Gb of high speed data each. Then with the money saved I could get a prepaid tablet plan when I need it from whomever had the best rates at the time.
Of course if you can tether your phone, which I can do with my GS3 right now, then your data might as well be pooled and an extra sim is just a matter of convenience.
I'm hoping things in the US are starting to change for the better. It seems like a racket compared to rates available in Europe.
